Who cares about labels?: Kenny Lopez Guerra, his dad, Ken, and friend Nick MacIlveen show off affordable casual shirts and slacks from Burlington Coat Factory in San Francisco. Kenny's woven, plaid shirt costs . more

Those two frugal fashion mavens from the Peninsula, who in a January Chronicle story showed cost conscious women how to dress stylishly without maxing out the

This time, and have used their boundless ingenuity and knack for knockoffs cultivated from years of reading high fashion magazines and then hunting for bargains at so called low brow retail shops on men's fashion.

Fashion professionals, they are not. Just call the women conscientious consumers who yearn to share their shopping avocation with kindred spirits to whom a quality bargain is more important than the label status.

Their plan was to comb through the pages of magazines such as Forbes FYI and GQ, tear out glossy ads featuring male models with impossible to get six pack abs and strategically scruffy facial hair. Then, they would set out on a quest to find reasonable facsimiles of the designer duds at what has become a clothing Mecca for the two women .

What Lopez Guerra and Santizo needed were men willing to try on clothes for,

Amazingly, they found three volunteers, spanning three generations: Lopez Guerra's brother Ken,van cleef and arpels alhambra knock off bracelet, 44; his son, Kenny, 12; and her neighbor , 25. These guys dress nicely, but readily admit they don't give fashion much thought beyond whether that brown pair of shoes matches those gray slacks. They seemed the perfect specimens for a makeover by the frugal fashionistas.

But, first, a word about the women's methodology. The goal is not to find exact knockoffs of offerings from the top men's designers; it's to uncover bargains that can make the men pass as Mr. GQ to people with a less discriminating eye than, say, which is pretty much everyone. Using that judgment, the women succeeded.

Check out Lopez Guerra's older brother, Ken, stylin' in a blue pin striped suit that would easily blend into the scene in the Financial District.

"I, as just another person, cannot determine from here what brand of suit Ken is wearing," said MacIlveen, standing maybe 10 strides away from . "It looks great. Let's be honest. If you had two guys right next to each other, one wearing a $250 suit and the other a $1,500 suit, most guys couldn't tell (the difference). I'd feel better wearing the $250 suit, knowing I paid only one third the price.

"I know some people are brand conscious, but as long as the suits look good,

function well and don't fall apart, I wouldn't care who made it."

Ken's suit seemed to fit that criteria.

And it didn't take long for Santizo and Lopez Guerra to find it off the rack at Burlington. They came armed with a GQ ad touting a $1,640 Jil Sander suit and a $1,950 Prada suit. Its knockoff turned out to be a $259.98 suit from Italy. Turning to shoes, the women pointed to another GQ ad featuring a pair of John Lobbs for $995. At Shoe Pavilion, van cleef alhambra knock off bracelet, adjacent to Burlington, the women said they found several affordable replacement pairs but opted for a pair of Impulse shoes from Italy, regular price $79, on sale for $59.95.

"Take the shoe off, Ken," Lopez Guerra said. "This is nice, not cheap. Smell the leather."

Ken: "You want me to smell my shoes?"

Ken's shirt and tie were from Fabio Inghirami ($16 and $10, respectively), quite a markdown from the shirts the women pointed to in the glossy ads such as a $340 , a $295 Etro and $195 Dunhill. Belts were even a bigger bargain. Lopez Guerra held up an ad for a Claiborne belt ($34) and a Tommy Hilfiger belt ($40). She and Santizo found similar belts from the same makers at Burlington for $7.98 and $14.98, respectively.

"And that Claiborne we found is a nicer belt," Lopez Guerra added. "The one in the ad is more casual."

Ken liked the way he looked in the suit.

"I wouldn't spend a thousand dollars on a suit," he said. ". . . Basically, it's just the name and where you buy it that's different. Who cares if you buy it at Nordstrom or (Burlington)? I know some men say, 'I got to have a Rolex watch.' But it's just a name. And it's just a watch."

The women outfitted MacIlveen in a maize summer suit by Fabio Inghirami for $389, a nice savings from the $1,095 offering in . MacIlveen's shoes, from , cost $30, compared to the $1,000 John Lobbs.

MacIlveen, who says he spends about $1,200 a year on clothes, gave the thumbs up to his outfit, though he admitted, "I still find $389 a little on the high side for me."

MacIlveen said he believes all men in their 20s could benefit from fashion coaching.

"Guys like me don't think about it much, van cleef rose gold fake bracelet," he said. "We need practical, common sense advice. I don't have the fashion sense, van cleef replica bracelet, the innate ability. Someone like Susan has to go out and say, 'You know, that's going to look great and it'll be a great value.' Susan and I have actually gone out shopping for real a couple of times looking for outfits for either a job interview or, like, going to Vegas."

At his middle school, Kenny said the "in" store is Abercrombie Fitch, but he doesn't shop there.

"You spend a hundred dollars and can only get two or three shirts," he said.

"I'll buy my shirts at Mervyn's or sports stores and my jeans at Costco. I do care what I wear sometimes. But if I'm just going to the park or something, I don't care what I wear."

The women outfitted Kenny in a suit by Retro for $34.99 and a $10 shirt by Bruno for Boys. "We didn't get any ads for kids comparisons," Lopez Guerra said. "But that's got to be a pretty good buy for a boys suit."

Forfeiture motion names ex

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, Sandi, replica cartier love pendant necklace, in a move legal observers said could result in them losing one or both homes. Attorney Office in Washington issued a statement insisting it was not seeking take over or seize the Jacksons two homes in the nation capital and the other in Chicago.

motion filed by the government today seeks to forfeit the defendant interest in the two properties in the event that they are sold, replica cartier chain ring, it said. is a standard filing in cases in which a defendant has a significant money judgment and equity in property that could be used to satisfy the money judgment.

A message seeking comment from Jackson attorney, replica love necklaces for women, Reid Weingarten, was not returned.

But legal observers who read through Friday motion said that, for all practical purposes, the Jacksons homes are now in jeopardy.

government statement is soft pedaling a bitter reality, replica love ring necklace, said Joe Lopez, a defense attorney in Chicago who practices in both state and federal court. filing is a big deal the Jacksons.

The Washington home, a Victorian style townhouse, is valued at more than $2 million. The Chicago home is on the southeast side of the city hugging Lake Michigan

If a judge approves the forfeiture motion, the government could act quickly to force the sale of the homes, said Lopez, who has no connection to the Jackson cases.

government will be in the driver seat about when the houses are sold, he said. they are not going to let the Jacksons live in the homes for 20 years.

Earlier this year, Jackson, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Sr., pleaded guilty to charges he spent $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items, from a gold plated Rolex watch to mounted elk heads.

Jackson plea agreement requires he pay the $750,000 back and indicates he will be subject to a host of other financial penalties. But prosecutors said in their Friday motion that they have recovered only half of 24 items Jackson bought with the campaign funds that he agreed to hand over the 12 items worth about $21,000 combined. That leaves the government far short of the $750,000 Jackson agreed to pay, triggering the latest forfeiture motion, the filing says.

At Wednesday sentencing, prosecutors will seek a four year prison term for Jackson, 48, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, mail fraud and false statements. Jackson wife, a 49 year old former Chicago alderman, pleaded guilty to filing false joint tax returns; prosecutors want a year and a half prison term for her.

The Jacksons have two school aged children, and one issue the sentencing judge will have to decide is whether to stagger their sentences so both mother and father aren imprisoned at the same time.

Bribed Jurors Get 5 Years In Prison

2 Took Money For Acquittals In 1996 Cocaine Trial

January 15, 2004By Ann W.

Jurors Gloria Alba, 31, and Maria del Carmen Penalver, 30, tearfully received five year prison sentences in what is believed to be the largest federal jury tampering scandal in modern history. Attorney Marcos Daniel JimM inez. "They struck at the very heart of our system of justice." He added that prosecutors looked but could not find another federal case with more than one corrupt juror.

Alba pleaded guilty last year to obstruction of justice, admitting she took $300,000 of a promised $1 million bribe. Penalver, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct justice, pocketed about $20,000.

Three others were caught in the scandal: Alba's husband Isael, 41, who was sentenced Wednesday to four years and nine months in prison; their admitted bag man, Raul Sarraff, 48, who received five years; and Penalver's former boyfriend, Gerald Rodriguez, 29, who drew a six month sentence for lying to the FBI about her bribe.

"These are good people who did a very bad thing," said the Albas' lawyer, cartier love bracelet replica, Ruben Oliva. "They had an enormous blind spot when presented with what was an immense carrot."

The money was easy to spend. Alba, bracelet love, who was 23 when she served as a juror, was able to quit her job and stay at home with her two children. She and her husband took expensive vacations and fixed up their house.

Now that house has been sold and the money forfeited to the government.

Penalver, who was 21, spent her bribe money on trendy designer accessories, including an expensive Fendi handbag, expensive watches for herself and her boyfriend, and an $8,500 Kia automobile, paid for with cash. District Judge Paul C. Huck ordered all defendants except Gloria Alba immediately taken into custody. Alba was given a reprieve until Feb. 18 so that she could help her children settle in with relatives, who will care for them while their parents are in prison.

As federal marshals prepared to handcuff her husband, Alba wiped tears from her eyes, putting his tie, watch and belt into her purse.

Earlier, she told the judge in a quavering voice how she explained her crime to her daughter. The child responded: "Mom, that's wrong. You should have gone to the police." She added, "If an 8 year old knows that, I can't ask you for anything."

Penalver pleaded for mercy, saying she felt pressured and intimidated by a jury foreman in the pocket of the violent men they'd been sworn to judge. It was easier to take their tainted drug money than to say no.

"I really wasn't interested in the monetary part," she said. Attorney Michael Davis noted, Penalver wasn't too afraid to call corrupt jury foreman Miguel Moya and reach out for her money the morning after they pushed other jurors to acquit two of Miami's biggest cocaine cowboys, cartier bangle with diamonds, Sal Magluta and Willy Falcon.

The prison sentences culminated a four year investigation launched after the acquittals devastated federal prosecutors in Miami. Justice Department's most high profile loss in a drug case. Prosecutors and agents, convinced something went awry, focused their energy and resources on getting to the bottom of it.

They conducted an exhaustive analysis of jurors' spending habits, tax returns and bank records, IRS special agent Dennis Donnell said. When confronted last year, Alba and Penalver admitted they sold their verdicts.

Besides Alba and Penalver, jury foreman Moya was prosecuted for taking bribe money and wearing down other jurors during deliberations. He was convicted in 1999 and is serving a 17 year sentence.

Moya was easy to catch. After delivering the not guilty verdicts, diamond love bracelet, his lifestyle improved dramatically. He spent $210,727 for a home in the Keys, $31,000 for a boat, took a trip to Hawaii and bought two sports cars and a Rolex watch.

But investigators didn't stop with the foreman, who offered Penalver her bribe during a break midway through the trial.

Alba's bribe money came from Sarraff, a family friend. He worked with a partner who was a childhood friend of Magluta's. The friend, who had his own problems with the law, told investigators he had passed about $900,000 from Magluta to Sarraff.

When confronted, Sarraff agreed to turn informant and went undercover last March. He wore a recording device, capturing the Albas agreeing to accept another $50,000 bribe for their silence during an upcoming trial. They spent nearly $14,000 before their arrest just days later.

"I think it's time to turn the page on the Sal Magluta saga. Let's close the book and move on," said Thomas Raffanello, who heads the Drug Enforcement Administration's Miami office.

It is a tale that inspired the opening credits of the 1980s TV hit Miami Vice.

High school friends Falcon and Magluta used their avocation, racing sleek speedboats, to build a $2 billion cocaine transporting franchise, one of the world's largest. Falcon and Magluta, both 48, are serving sentences of 20 and 205 years, respectively, for corrupting their trial.

The two high living cocaine smugglers used millions of laundered drug dollars to undermine the criminal justice system by bribing witnesses and jurors, even from jail. In the end, about 40 people, including a fourth of the duo's 1996 jury, were sent to federal prison. They also were suspected but never convicted of the murders of several witnesses.

The Great Beauty Review

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL: Does anybody sell calendars indicating how long it's okay to rest on one's laurels? Paolo Sorrentino's sprawling, consistently gorgeous The Great Beauty accompanies the inner and outer musings of one Jep Gambardella, who came to Rome at age 26 and has just celebrated his 65th birthday with a party no more rowdy or excessive than the revelry in Times Square on New Year's Eve or a small gathering for 500 of Jay 'the great' Gatsby's closest friends. Jep is played by Sorrentino's cherished key actor Toni Servillo, star of four of the director's six features to date.

Is there a generational approach to superficiality?

Jep published one novel, cartier bracelet bangle, The Human Apparatus, 40 years ago. The fact that he never managed to write another book is seen as an intriguing aspect of his persona rather than a sure fire sign that the guy is lazy or a loser. He writes the thing, wins a prize and then gets novelist's block for four decades! What a waste!" But the European stance is closer to "Jep hasn't found the right subject" which is about as convincing as Liberace not marrying ( la Steven Soderbergh's splendid biopic Behind the Candelabra) because he hasn't found the right girl.

Jep does wield his pen. He writes for a magazine whose formidable editor Dadina happens to be a dwarf. In an early passage, Dadina assigns Jep to interview a female performance artist named Talia Concept. Ms. Concept can't bring herself to define even the broadest aspects of her work, let alone the what makes you tick nitty gritty Jep would like to coax out of her. The sequence is a clever riff on how art is in the eye of the beholder and/or a sucker is born every minute.

Talia Concept just may have trouble articulating what her work means to her because her current piece consists of running down a slab of highway in the nude and then ramming her head into an ancient wall as hard as she can. The fact that her pubic hair is dyed red and has a Soviet style hammer and sickle shaved into it would seem to have required some forethought. (The hair on our heads may fashion itself into interesting configurations when subjected to the elements or while we sleep but landscaped pubic hair needs conscious help.)

Every great European capital boasts a spot or two that, depicted on film, screams 'Hey, look where we are!' In Paris, it's the apartment with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower ('Hmmm, that must be Paris!') or situated so you could almost reach out and touch the Arc de Triomphe. Jep's apartment has a substantial terrace overlooking the Coliseum. While one could never become indifferent to such a view, one could also internalise the notion that nothing one writes or creates is likely to last a fraction as long as that splendid ruin, so why even try?

Jep has a cordial relationship with his own ennui, a condition brought on by a steady diet of superficial encounters by day and especially by night. And yet we feel his intelligence shining through. Jep spends some quality time with a professional stripper but it's a saintly nun's visit to Rome on a self abnegating pilgrimage that revs up his dormant creativity.

Is there a generational approach to superficiality? Sofia Coppola's fact inspired The Bling Ring portrays a group of contemporary young people whose bottomless appetite for designer garb and accessories takes vapidity to new heights. Their idea of 'art' is a brand name handbag that some arbiter of taste has decreed to be the must have accessory that will reign in that slot until another must have accessory takes its place, possibly in the next few nanoseconds. Jep knows that a well turned phrase or an ancient stone is more valuable than a Chanel handbag or a Rolex watch, but he also knows you won't find any well turned phrases to steal if you burglarise Paris Hilton's house.

Jep to Woman: "What job do you do?"

Woman: "I'm rich."

Jep: "Great job."

In Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, a droll if overlong vampire tale, vampire Adam (Tom Hiddleston) who lives in Detroit, love bracelet with diamonds, takes his vampire wife Eve (Tilda), who lives in Tangier, on a tour by night (of course) of some sights in the Motor City. One of them is what's left of the Michigan Theater, cartier love bracelet bangle, a once resplendent movie palace that seated 4,000 movie goers in the reflected gleam of chandeliers and dream weaving ornamentation. "Now it's a car park" says Adam. Tourism aside, it's not that much of a stretch to picture a pragmatic American official saying "The Coliseum is old and it's falling apart.

It'd make a great parking lot and that's something Rome could really use."

Bemused Jep has an upstairs neighbour who is exquisitely groomed and never responds to Jep's overtures in the building's elevator or when both men come out to their balconies to admire the view. When Jep learns who his enigmatic neighbour is or at least what he does, sort of we wonder why we didn't guess sooner. So, when he walks home along near vacant streets shortly after sunrise after yet another night of, well, nightlife, he notices things. The camera does the official 'noticing' and we, too, are taken with the movements of a bird or the colour of the sky. We feel as if our powers of observation are heightened. And this happens even though we haven't really been up all night assaulted by bad thumping music or gyrating women whose entire wardrobes might fit into a small Christmas stocking.

As in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, which this film honours without copying or borrowing, spend enough time in the company of other people whose minds and hearts may as well boast a motel style vacancy sign, it's hard to remember that maybe going out every night isn't all that normal.

While most of us wouldn't mind finding out for ourselves whether a life of wealth and luxury inevitably leads to lassitude and/or silly behaviour, most of us suspect that staying up late dancing and drinking particularly at age 65 might interfere with one's productivity. The existential decision is whether to value whatever falls under the heading of 'productivity' or to go with the flow, cartier 4 diamond love bracelet, just living for this moment and the moment after that.
