My Black Power salute at Mexico Olympics is as pertinent now as it was in 1968
When he looks back at the moment that changed his life, John Carlos remembers how quiet it was. Standing atop the Olympic podium alongside his team mate Tommie Smith, their fists thrust towards the Mexican sky, there was a brief moment of calm. "When people saw what we did, there was total silence before they digested what they were seeing", he says.
It was at this moment that Carlos felt his most vulnerable. "You're out in the wide open," he says. "If anybody was going to shoot us they were going to shoot in that dormant moment when it was silent." The bullets never came, of course, but the hatred did. "They went into a rage," as Carlos puts it.
It was October 16, 1968, and as the battle for civil rights raged on American soil, these two sprinters had dragged the fight on to the most global of stages.
Carlos and Smith's protest at the Olympic Games in Mexico City after they finished third and first respectively in the 200metres final was not just one of the defining images of Olympic history, it was one of the most iconic moments of the 20th century.
Carlos was just 23 when he made his stand, and it cost him everything. With his reputation ruined, he struggled to find a job, his children were bullied at school and then, nine tortuous years later, his wife Kim took her own life. By then, their marriage had broken down, and Carlos believes her death was partly the result of the endless interference of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which had placed him under constant surveillance since his return to the United States.
"Here's a guy with income who can support his family," he says of himself. "And then the next day he has no income and people start to Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet diamond replicas walk away. You go through a process in your mind, thinking about why. Maybe it is because they have no love for me, maybe they don't like me. But then it dawns on you that they are walking away not because they don't love you they are walking away because they fear what is happening to you might happen to them."
As much as Carlos's story is one of bravery and courage, it is also about sacrifice. In the years since, it is a sacrifice that other athletes have been largely unwilling to replicate. But now, with racial tensions rising to the fore once again in the United States, Carlos believes change is on the way.
Citing the death of Freddie Gray in April 2015 after suffering severe spinal cord injuries in the back of a police van, and the Charleston shooting a few months later, when nine black people were killed in a church, Carlos says he is "appalled" by the race problems sweeping through America.
He supports the "Black Lives Matter" campaign, which has gained momentum in recent months following the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, two black men, at the hands of police officers.
"It's the same difference," Carlos says when asked how these troubles compare to the ones he endured as a young man. "The fight is going to go on."
The question, then, is whether it will be fought by athletes. In this money spinning era of agents, sponsorship deals and endless proclamations of the importance of "brand values", it seems the weight of the establishment is heavier than ever.
As spelled out by Rule 50 in the Olympic Charter, "no kind of demonstration, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas", while the 6,000 word Team Member's Agreement signed by every British athlete competing in Rio makes it clear that even warming up in unofficial training kit is strictly prohibited.
Such is the primacy of sports brands in the United States that an athlete's kit supplier is listed alongside their name on results sheets, and is often read out when they are announced to the crowd before competition.
If the silence in that Olympic Stadium in 1968 was one of fear for Carlos, then the relative silence of his successors the only overtly political act in Rio has beenthe refusal of an Egyptian judoka to shake the hand of an Israeli opponent, an 'infringement' that resulted in him being sent home by his own team is a source of great frustration.
"Forty eight years ago, we did not earn a big fat cheque for every track event we ran," he says. "These individuals today are multi millionaires.
"What do they have to lose other than the noose around their ankles, dragging them to the athletics field? They might lose a few million dollars but they have a few more million dollars to carry them through life. They have far less to lose than I did.
"The only way we are going to win this thing is through people turning up their voices. The entertainers and the athletes, those are the public figures you see and hear every day. If they say something, people are going to stop and listen."
Across the Atlantic, Carlos believes it is starting to happen. The days when athletes were cowed by sponsors are gone, he says. The American runner Nick Symmonds is leading the campaign against strict sponsorship and advertising rules, while icons such as Serena Williams and basketball player Carmelo Anthony are at the forefront of a new, politically active generation of sportspeople.
In a social media post written last month, Anthony, who is competing for the US in Rio, said: "I'm calling for all my fellow athletes to step up and take chargethere's no more sitting back and being afraid of tackling and addressing political issues anymorewe can't worry about what endorsements we gonna lose."
"We were horticulturalists," says Carlos, now 71. "We planted seeds and we nourished them and watered them and returned them to earth. The young athletes making these statements, they are the fruit of our labour.
"Many of the athletes today are starting to realise that they are in a bubble. They have escaped the slums and the streets, but they still don't have their mum or their son or their daughter in the bubble with them. And if they come out of their uniforms and are riding down the street, then they are not in that bubble either.
"I think many of them are starting to understand that they have to speak for those who can't speak for themselves."
This interview took place the day after Carlos and Smith, who have suffered a strained relationship with each other, spoke at their old university, California's San Jose State, where they have eventually been welcomed back as heroes. A larger than life statue of their protest was unveiled there in 2005, and last week they were invited back van cleef bracelet imitation for the relaunch of the university's track and field programme.
"We did not go to Mexico to become legends," Carlos says, but it is an undeniable truth that such status is a consequence of what he and Smith did in 1968, and that their legacy is one of which few Olympians could dream.
"There are only certain people who everyone remembers winning," Carlos says. "You might get one or two like Usain Bolt, but there are many who get their 15 minutes in the sun and that's all they get. What happens when their Olympic light goes out?"
Following the death of his wife in 1977, Carlos fell into depression. Eventually, though, life began to change. He was helped by his second wife, Charlene, and by finding work in 1985 at Palm Springs High School in California, where he coached track and field and became a guidance counsellor replica van cleef alhambra necklace gold before retiring a couple of years ago.

In 2005, when their statue was erected at San Jose State, both Smith and Carlos were awarded honorary doctorates. Recognition took a long time coming, but there is no doubt in Carlos's mind that he would do it all again.
"What I did was right 48 years ago and 48 years later it has proven to be right," he says. But, for him, the job is not done. "In 1968 we were on a programme for humanity we are still on the same programme today."

Mushrooms have their magic
But despite these dangers, for the next two months, during fall's mild, rainy weather, mushroom lovers and fungi enthusiasts will be out looking for specimens. And experts warn: If you want to take part and you want to taste them, don't go into the woods alone. Museum.
"You should go out with [an expert] who really knows their mushrooms."
Hebda and others say fungus experts mycologists will take into account many more factors than appearance to identify a wild mushroom. Terrain, surrounding environment, species of nearby trees, available sunlight, even the time of year and day can play a part.
Kem Luther, a member of the Southern Vancouver Island Mycological Society, whose members regularly lead mushroom hunts, said books capture only the look of one particular mushroom at one particular moment.
The same species can look very different at a different time.
Worse for novice mushroom hunters is the existence of look alike varieties, so what might look safe might actually make you ill.
Luther said the death cap mushroom, for example, resembles an edible mushroom found in Asia, the paddy straw mushroom.
Similarly, Smith's amanita can be found in the same places as the sought after pine mushroom.
For this reason, mycologists group even edible van cleef arpels necklace replica mushrooms into categories: safe and unsafe.
"So the pine mushroom would be an unsafe edible because it looks like the Smith's amanita," Luther said.
He would also rank as unsafe the magic mushroom, Psilocybe semilanceata. Now illegal but still hunted for it hallucinogenic properties, magic mushrooms also have several poisonous look alikes, often growing in the same ecological zones.
"[Magic mushrooms] are small, brown and not very fleshy so you have to pick a lot of them," Luther said. "And there are a lot of small brown mushrooms out there."
In all, he said about 2,000 species of mushrooms and fungus have been recorded on Vancouver Island, and it's agreed at least another 2,000 have not been recorded.
Most of them are not poisonous so dangers can be overblown. But neither are the majority regarded as very tasty.
"I suppose they are edible but they aren't very interesting," Luther said. "I mean, even cardboard could be considered edible."
He estimates there are a dozen mushroom species on Vancouver Island worth eating, but only five are regularly hunted.

In contrast to the store bought button mushroom, which he said most fungi enthusiasts would dismiss out of hand, these wild mushrooms all have a distinct, often powerful flavour.
In fact, he said the button mushroom was chosen for his bland, inoffensive flavour. Also, whether you buy white, brown or portobello mushrooms, they are all different varieties of the same species, Agaricus bisporus.
"People in mycological societies will eat the button mushroom but they don't hold them in very high regard," Luther said.

NAB Cup week 1
Friday, Etihad Stadium, from 6.45 pmOn Friday night, the youngster, who so often has been compared to a young Scott Pendlebury, will make his debut for the Bulldogs and is expecting to swing through a variety of roles. "Throughout my junior footy I played the midfield and half forward role and [the] Bulldogs are really trying to play me in a wing role and have the versatility to also play as a half back,'' Macrae said.
He is likely to be joined in the back half by mature age VFL star Brett Goodes. Bulldogs development coach Peter German is expecting he will have to do without Goodes at Williamstown this season. Jack Redpath will also make his debut, along with Nick Lower (ex ) and Tom Young (ex ). German also said a fit and firing Adam Cooney, who has had a stellar pre season, may also help turn around the club's on field fortunes.
Watch out for: Dale Morris the reliable defender will play his first AFL match since round 21, 2011, after a further injury setback.
Goosey, who has played an unheralded role in the Bombers' recent recruiting with the likes of Michael Hibberd and Mark Baguley, maintains that the Bombers were the only club ever genuinely interested in all three ex Dolphins and all have the potential to be quick fixes.
''I suppose you can go back to Michael Hibberd. I promoted Michael to five clubs and had meetings with them to try and get him drafted. Essendon were the ones that I suppose had that trust,'' Goosey said.
''They liked the look of him [Van Unen] during the year. It wasn't as though copy van cleef alhambra bracelet I hid him, he was there for everyone to see.''
Others joining Van Unen for their debuts on Friday night include Jason Ashby, Nick Kommer, Martin Gleeson, Hal imitation Van Cleef & Arpels Clover necklace Hunter and Lachlan Dalgleish.
But it is perhaps the lesser names who were plucked from the VFL Kyle Martin and Sam Dwyer who will be thrust into the action in their debuts for the Pies.
For Martin, a two time premiership player at Noble Park, a move to Frankston last season was the best career choice he's made.
"It was just purely to try and get the best out of my footy,'' Martin said. "It just shows that the VFL is not just another competition, it's another chance to get to the next level.''
Dwyer, 26, knows he doesn't have time to waste on the Pies' list. The Port Melbourne premiership player last season played a VFL grand final while still recovering from a fractured leg. At the time, he was unaware he was going to become a Pie, but his efforts were admirable.
" I think I'll play forward and midfield, a bit of both. They haven't really given much away, but from what I can take, they're the couple of roles I might play,'' Dwyer said.
Watch out for: Brent Macaffer Pies football manager Geoff Walsh said Macaffer, who suffered a serious knee injury last season, was returning to top form after a ''diligent'' pre season. He was prominent in the recent intra club hit out.

The return of Mark LeCras from last year's knee injury could throw a spanner in the works, given the success of the forward line without him last season.
Ex Bulldog Josh Hill filled LeCras' role to perfection last season with 36 goals. If you add mature age rookie Callum Sinclair to the attacking mix, the Eagles may cause some early headaches for opposition defences.
Forwards coach Justin Longmuir said Hill was still in the Eagles' best 22 despite LeCras' return.
Sinclair and Scott Lycett have been identified as key players to fill the void left by Quinten Lynch, who went to over the summer.
Sinclair, who played with Port Melbourne before going to Subiaco, is a roaming ruckman who can play as a goalkicking forward, while Lycett has reportedly had a top pre season and is geared to provide some back up on the forward line. Jack Darling has reportedly had a super pre season; he and Josh Kennedy will provide the main focal points.
The Eagles will have to wait as long as the early van cleef ans arpels Pendant replica rounds of the season proper for Nic Naitanui to begin his 2013 campaign.

Mason bees make useful replica Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet garden pets
Mason bees make useful garden petsRANDY SHORE, Vancouver SunMark van ManenThis non social cousin of the honeybee will help you grow more fruit, berries and vegetables and seems less vulnerable to some of the health problems that plague bee populations, both domesticated and wild.
Commercial honeybees have suffered greatly over the past six years, with colony losses of 30 to 90 per cent in some regions. That's bad news for commercial fruit and vegetable growers, who depend on the services of honeybee colonies in mobile hives to ensure a good crop. Thousands of hives are transported to fields and orchards each year synced to the growing season of each crop. orchards and farms would drop by hundreds of millions of dollars, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
"The plight of the honeybee has been in the headlines all over the world," said Hartley Rosen of Mason Bee Vancouver, a project of the Environmental Youth Alliance. "Thirty or 40 years ago we didn't need all these honeybees for crops; most of the pollination was done by native bees."
"The mason bee is a flagship species for us, because as backyard gardeners they are easy to manage and maintain and in terms of their ability to pollinate they are incredibly efficient," Rosen explained.
With no colony to protect, mason bees have little motivation to sting.
Mason bees are solitary, nesting in hollow stems, woodpecker drillings and insect holes, mainly in wooded areas. But a simple habitat made of wood drilled out with attractively sized holes will coax mason bees into taking up residence in your yard, according to UBC Botanical Garden horticulture manager Ingrid Hoff.
The botanical garden vegetable patch maintains habitats for mason bees to improve productivity.
"They help quite a bit with food gardening, actually," said Hoff. Hosting mason bees in your yard is a way to compensate for the lack of natural pollinators in dense urban environments.
Garden centres sell a variety of equipment for housing mason bees and sell starter packs of the insects still in their cocoons.
"Once they hatch out of the cocoons they are good to go," said Rosen. "But [rather than purchasing cocoons] a lot of people just put the structures out and the mason bees find them."
Mason bees are effective at searching for nesting holes in plants and trees, so they quickly find their way to suitable spaces in habitat kits, untreated blocks of lumber or logs, in the spring.
Commercial kits include a set of blocks of drawers that fit together to create spaces that are roughly to 3/8 of an inch in diameter. Of the 130 species of mason bee, there are several that will be happy with either size hole.
The gregarious Blue Orchard bee thrives on the coast, so feel free to put van cleef bracelet imitaiton several dozen or even several hundred holes in your nest.
Garden centres recommend using hollow straws as liners that can be removed to determine the over wintering condition of the cocoons or for disposal in case of infestation by mites or other pests.
"If you use wood blocks you won't be able to clean out the nests, so if you want a little more control and ensure that you have cocoons for the following year you should go to a tray system so you can take the cocoons out," Rosen explained.
Mason bees are attracted by spring flowering plants, according to Brian Campbell at Blessed Bee Farm.
