If you didn’t get a chance to participate in the open beta and you’re wondering what’s the game is like, let me give you a quick overview of how it compares to my main game of the last fifteen years, World of Warcraft.Character creation comes after a short video to introduce the main narrative hook of heading off to explore a mysterious island. The camera pans into the ship where your character is huddled below decks, and then there’s a standard character creation screen with options similar to what you see in World of Warcraft. You’re picking from pre-defined selections. There aren’t any sliders.
Questing in New World is standard MMO fare. You talk to an NPC, and get a little voiced-over dialog along with your mission objective. This usually involves killing the various wildlife in the surrounding area, but sometimes the NPC will ask you to deliver a message to another NPC, craft something, or retrieve an item. These are all quests players have essentially done in World of Warcraft and other MMOs hundreds of times.
Players also receive quests from the Town Project Board. Each settlement has a Town Project Board with various quests that follow the same major archetypes. Completing these quests will raise your standing with the settlement, but also help to upgrade the settlement itself with higher tiers of crafting stations. These crafting stations, like the Smelter for smelting ore, are then usable by everyone regardless of their standing or how many Town Project missions they contributed to.
Standing is New World’s term for Reputation in World of Warcraft. As you hit certain thresholds, the settlement will offer you a reward. You can choose from various buffs like increased experience points for killing monsters in that settlement’s Territory (basically what we called a zone), reduced costs to crafting in the settlement, or even more storage space at that settlement’s Storage Shed.
Speaking of the Storage Shed, each settlement has a one along with a Trading Post. In World of Warcraft, the Storage Shed is your Bank and the Trading Post is the Auction House. Like the earliest days of World of Warcraft, the various Trading Posts are not linked, but you can search across all Trading Posts. Prices can vary widely between settlements — you might save a bunch of coin buying your new sword in Monarch’s Bluffs rather than Everfall. The Storage Sheds are linked, but only if the same faction controls both settlements. Unlike some other modern MMOs, crafting materials must be in your inventory to use them, and not in your Storage Shed.
There are no vendors in New World. Unwanted equipment must be sold at the Trading Post to other players, but most of the time, you’ll want to Salvage it. Salvaging is like disenchanting. You’ll get some crafting materials and a reagent called repair parts. Whenever you repair in New World, it takes coin (gold), and a variable number of Repair Parts.
New World’s crafting system is deep, detailed, and integral to every part of the game. Unlike World of Warcraft, you can learn every single Trade Skill (profession), and while you can choose to concentrate on just a couple, dabbling in them all provides major benefits to your character. New World separates out the the gathering like Herbing, Mining, and Skinning from the refining like Smelting and Stonecutting. Each is a distinct Trade Skill. Then you have your production Trade Skills like Engineering, Weaponsmithing, and Armoring. There’s even a Furnishing profession to make furniture for players to put into their houses — more on that in a moment.
World of Warcraft Classic gets release date

WoW Classic is a "vanilla" version of the once super popular MMORPG launching on Aug. 27. Players will be able to play the 1.12 version of the game known as the "Drums of War" update. Before the game goes live there will be both beta and stress tests.
As the popular MMORPG saw millions of players leave over the years, WoW fans began creating their own private servers offering the "classic" WoW experience that didn't include any of the multiple expansions or updates over the course of the game's lifetime.
In April 2016, Blizzard began closing down classic WoW unauthorized servers to the dismay of fans. The company cited the shutdown was to "protect against intellectual property infringement."
It was November 2017 when Blizzard announced it'd release its own version of the "vanilla" experience called WoW Classic.
Along with revealing the WoW Classic release date, Blizzard also listed plans for both a beta and stress test of the game. Players who opt-in for the testing on their account manager page and have an active subscription will be randomly selected for the beta starting May 15. Then the developer will have three stress tests where players can log in to play the game for a short period of time on the following dates:
Players who want to secure their name for WoW Classic can create their character starting on Aug. 13. Following the release of the game, Blizzard will add in original WoW content in the order of their initial release date.
Disney Plus' new Home Alone movie trailer doesn't look like a fun time
Disney Plus has revealed the first trailer for its Home Alone revival, which bears the less Google-friendly title of Home Sweet Home Alone. On paper, everything seems to fit with Home Sweet Home Alone: Jojo Rabbit's Archie Yates stars as the boy who finds himself home alone, while Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney play the husband-and-wife thieves who he must brutalize in creative ways as they invade his home. Other cast members include Aisling Bea as the family's mother, and Buzz from the original movies makes a cameo in the trailer, suggesting a vast extended fictional universe of boys being left at home.
It just isn't very funny. The reception seems a little mixed on YouTube towards the trailer, with around 2,600 upvotes to 1,900 downvotes at the time of writing. As one user puts it, "I look forward to seeing how they can make this premise work in an age where everybody has a phone."
There is only one great Home Alone movie, and that is the original. You might find the second or third charming, built on a foundation of nostalgia, and they certainly have their moments, but it's fundamentally a premise that only gets worse the more times you do it.
What's amiss about this one, based on the trailer, is the lack of good jokes or charm. Young actor Archie Yates certainly proved himself to be a great performer in Jojo Rabbit, but the protagonist here just seems like a slightly smarmy posh British boy – he's got 'big early Harry Potter movies kid actor' energy. Being compared to Macaulay Culkin is just a tough break for anyone, though, so this movie was always facing an uphill battle in that respect.
Back to the trailer: this lad's house is gigantic, and his parents can afford a family trip to Japan, even though they have about 40 children. I'm supposed to feel sympathy for this kid? Hell, I hope the burglars win – think how much that place is insured for. They can afford to lose a few lamps and laptops to victims of the wealth gap.
These are all criticisms you can level at the original Home Alone too, of course. We're just being flippant because, on paper, this should look like more fun than it seems in the trailer. Alongside Kemper and Delaney, Rick and Morty's Chris Parnell and Veep's Timothy Simons are among the supporting players – so where are the laughs?
Hopefully the hard edges of the original haven't been sanded off entirely – it just looks very conventional and inoffensive. We wouldn't put too much money on there being a big twist that's hidden in this teaser (imagine the burglars were secretly the boy's real parents, and he only found out after he had them thrown in jail – that would ruin a lot of Christmases).
There's arguably an element of punching down when you're criticizing something aimed squarely at kids – but Home Alone has more baggage than that, because the target audience is split between younger viewers and older fans of the films.

But what kind of mask is best? When choosing a mask, experts say focus on the fabric, fit and breathability. How well a mask protects is a function of both what it's made of and how well it seals to your face. But if you can't breathe well through it, then you're less likely to keep it on.Here's a look at different kinds of masks you might consider and how effective they are at protecting the people around you — and you as well. Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people should wear cloth face coverings in public, we'll talk about fabric masks first. But if you've purchased a medical mask or respirator, scroll down for some important notes — like how to spot if you've got a fake. First, consider the fabric itself. "The tightness of the weave is really important. That's the first thing I would ask people to look into," says Supratik Guha, a professor of molecular engineering at the University of Chicago. To check your fabric, hold it up to a light: If you can easily see the outline of the individual fibers, it's not going to make a great filter. Researchers say a tight-weave 100% cotton is a good bet. That's because at the microscopic level, the natural fibers in cotton tend to have more three-dimensional structure than synthetic fibers, which are smoother, says Christopher Zangmeister, a researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. That 3D structure can create more roadblocks that can stop an incoming particle, he explains. Zangmeister co-authored a new study in ACS Nano that tested how well dozens of different materials filtered. While two synthetics, including one that's 100% polyester, did well, most synthetics ranked near the bottom, he says. But even a mask made out of synthetic fibers is better than no mask at all, he says. Think multiple layers. Several studies have found that masks made of multiple layers are more effective at blocking small particles. A good option: a mask made of two layers of a tight-weave fabric with a built-in pocket where you can place a filter, says May Chu, an epidemiologist at the Colorado School of Public Health who co-authored a paper published on June 2 in Nano Letters on the filtration efficiency of household mask materials.The best bet for the material to slip in as a filter is polypropylene, which is derived from plastic, says Chu. "If you go to Walmart, you look for Oly-fun, which is the brand name of that fabric. It's also called spunbond," says Chu, who's a scientific adviser to the World Health Organization and helped craft its recent detailed guidance on cloth masks. Chu says polypropylene is great as a physical filter but has another benefit: It holds an electrostatic charge. In other words, it uses the power of static electricity. Think of the static cling that can happen when you rub two pieces of fabric together, says Chu. That's basically what's happening with this fabric: That "cling" effect traps incoming — and outgoing — droplets. "That's what you want — the cling is what's important," Chu says.
