The government wants your fingerprint to unlock your phone
As the world watched the FBI spar with Apple this winter in an attempt to hack into a San Bernardino shooter's iPhone, federal officials were quietly waging a different encryption battle in a Los Angeles courtroom. The phone contained Apple's fingerprint identification system for unlocking, and prosecutors wanted access to the data inside it.
It marked a rare time that prosecutors have demanded a person provide a fingerprint to open a computer, but experts expect such cases to become more common as cracking digital security becomes a larger part of law enforcement work. Supreme Court has held that police can search phones with a valid warrant and compel a person in custody to provide physical evidence such as fingerprints without a judge's permission.
But some legal experts say there should be a higher bar for biometric data because providing a fingerprint to open replica van cleef necklaces a digital device gives the state access to a vast trove of personal information and could be a form of self incrimination. with a string of criminal convictions who pleaded no contest to a felony count of identity theft. with a string of criminal convictions. 25 in a Van Nuys courtroom. Magistrate van cleef arpels replica necklace Judge Alicia Rosenberg sitting in a federal courtroom 17 miles away signed off on the warrant for the defendant to press her finger on the phone. The phone was seized from a Glendale residence linked to Sevak Mesrobian, who according to a probation report was Bkhchadzhyan's boyfriend and a member of the Armenian Power gang with the moniker of "40." Asst. Atty. Vicki Chou said the search was part of an ongoing probe. She declined further comment.
Other court documents in the case were filed under seal.
Even with the limited outlines of the inquiry, Brenner said the act of compelling a person in custody to press her finger against a phone breached the 5th Amendment's protection against self incrimination. It forced Bkchadzhyan to testify without uttering a word because by moving her finger and unlocking the phone, she authenticated its contents.
"By showing you opened the phone, you showed that you have control over it," Brenner said. fake van cleef arpels clover necklace "It's the same as if she went home and pulled out paper documents she's produced it."
But Albert Gidari, the director of privacy at Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society, said the action might not violate the 5th Amendment prohibition of self incrimination.
"Unlike disclosing passcodes, you are not compelled to speak or say what's 'in your mind' to law enforcement," Gidari said. "'Put your finger here' is not testimonial or self incriminating."
The issue partly revolves around the prevailing legal stance toward fingerprints.
Law enforcement routinely obtains search warrants to examine property or monitor telecommunications, even swab inside an inmate's mouth for DNA. But fingerprints have long remained in the class of evidence that doesn't require a warrant, along with providing handwriting samples or standing in a lineup. Courts have categorized fingerprints as "real or physical evidence" sourced from the body, unlike communications or knowledge, which cannot be compelled without violating the 5th Amendment.
George M. Dery III, a lawyer and criminal justice professor at California State University, Fullerton, likened the warrant to the government's request for a key. "This has a warrant. Even though it is a big deal having someone open up their phone, they've gone to a judge and it means there's a likelihood of criminal activity."
Apple's fingerprint sensor, known as Touch ID, is installed on phones and tablets rolled out after 2013, and the optional feature has a narrow window during which it is viable for an investigator. The Touch ID biometric reader cannot be used if the phone has not been unlocked for 48 hours. If a phone is restarted, or goes beyond the 48 hour window, only a passcode can open it.
Few courts have taken up the issue of whether a defendant can be forced to unlock his or her iPhone, either with a password or fingerprint.
In a Virginia trial court, David Charles Baust was accused of trying to strangle a woman in his bedroom, which was equipped with a video recording device that the victim said could have been linked to Baust's phone. Investigators seized the phone via search warrant, but it could only be opened with a passcode or fingerprint reader.

In 2014, a judge said Baust could be compelled to provide his fingerprint to open a locked phone but could not be ordered to disclose a passcode. The judge reasoned that providing a fingerprint was akin to giving a key, while giving a passcode stored in one's mind entailed revealing knowledge and therefore testifying. Baust was later acquitted. He said he was not representing Bkhchadzhyan in any federal criminal matter and believed the probe included hacking and possibly "other issues."

star Belgian sailor sick after racing on polluted bay
A Belgian woman who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics has become sick after racing on polluted Guanabara Bay, the first sailor to fall ill from the waters that were heavily scrutinised leading to the Rio Games.
Evi Van Acker reported feeling sick after Wednesday's races, the governing body World Sailing said. Her poor performances have put her at risk of missing out on a medal in the Laser Radial class.
"Evi caught a bacteria in early July that causes dysentery," coach Wil Van Bladel said. "Doctors say this can seriously disrupt energy levels for three months. It became clear yesterday that she lacked energy during tough conditions. She could not use full force for a top condition. . The likelihood that she caught it here during contact with the water is very big."
Van Acker was evaluated by the chief medical officer after her races on Wednesday and evaluated further by the Belgian medical team that night, World Sailing spokesman Darryl Seibel said. He added that this appears to be an isolated case and Van Acker is the only sailor who has reported feeling ill in the opening days of the regatta.
Van Acker had a "serious gastrointestinal infection a few weeks ago," the Belgian Olympic Committee imitation van cleef white gold bracelet said in a statement. "She has not fully recovered. It makes it difficult for her to go through long periods of sustained effort." The committee said a physiologist is working with Van Acker leading to the next races on Friday "so she can get the most out of her energy reserves."
Thursday was a day off knock off van cleef rose gold bracelet for the Laser Radial fleet.
The poor quality of Guanabara Bay was in the forefront of the buildup to the Olympics. An independent study by The Associated Press has shown high levels of viruses in the water as well as bacteria from human sewage.
Olympic officials have insisted that sailing on the sprawling bay is safe, and sailing officials have said competitors have taken precautions. Even Brazilian sailors have said there's no danger at least for those who compete there regularly.
German sailor Erik Heil, however, was treated for several infections he said were caused by polluted water during a Rio test regatta a year ago. He sails in the 49er class in which the two man crew is splashed the whole race. That class is also prone to capsizes. The 49er competition begins on Friday.
Van Acker, a favorite to return to the podium in Rio, has had consistently weak performances. She was second and 12th on Monday, second and 29th Tuesday and then 16th and 15th in tough conditions on Wednesday. She's 10th overall with four races left before the medals race. Although that would get her into the medals race, she has 47 points, currently 26 points out of medals position.
As the games approached, most sailors tried to deflect talk from the foul water to the competition.
"That's a shame," Denmark's Allan Norregaard said about Van Acker's illness. "I don't have much comment on that."
Norregaard had been outspoken about the pollution in Guanabara Bay, particularly the amount of trash in the water.
"It's a lot better now than it was," said Norregaard, who changed subjects and said the weather conditions on some courses are "just not suitable for the games. . It's scandalous."
At a test event a year ago, sailors complained about the stench of sewage flowing into the harbor at the venue, the Marina da Gloria, just yards from where the boats are launched. That problem was fixed earlier this year when a new sewage system was installed to stop brown, untreated sludge from being poured into the small harbour.
Seibel said that every morning World Sailing's medical and technical officials evaluate the latest water quality testing data provided by the government to make certain conditions acceptable.
"The standard our team uses in assessing water quality is the World Health Organization standard for primary contact (even though sailing is classified as a secondary contact sport)," Seibel said in imitation bracelet van cleef alhambra an email. "For every day of competition thus far, and in the lead up to the games, the water quality has met this standard."

The Inside Story on How to Keep Prized Turkish Van Cats as Pets
In Eastern Turkey lies the mystical Lake Van, which is one of the world's largest endorheic lake. The Turkish Van is a breed of cat that hails from this rugged mountainous region. The first one to be registered was imported from Turkey to England in 1955 by Laura Lushington. Its coat is perfectly suited to the climate in the regions surrounding Lake Van. This area faces extreme temperatures during the summer and winter seasons. The Turkish Van's wonderfully adapted coat is semi long haired, water resistant, and thick in winters, all the while maintaining a soft, cashmere like texture. These cats receive their winter mane upon reaching maturity. During the hot spring and summer months, the long hair on their body is conveniently shed and replaced by a velvety short coat. However, some cats may have random body spots of hues similar to those on the head and tail. Pure Vans do not have more than 20% of color on the entire body and no marking on the legs. The color of the first one to be exported out of Turkey was Red Tabby and White, which is still considered to be its authentic coloring. Later colors added were Cream, Black, Blue, Cream Tabby, Brown Tabby, Blue Tabby, Tortoiseshell, Dilute Tortoiseshell, Brown Torbie, and Blue Torbie. van cleef perlee ring fake Their eye color can be amber, blue, or odd (one each, amber and blue). The perfect specimen has broad shoulders with a forward center of gravity. Some large males cannot follow their heads through a fence due to the broadness of their chest and shoulders. It has a moderately long body with back legs that are slightly longer than its front legs, but it maintains perfect overall proportion. Males can weigh up to about 16 lb, while females tend to be a bit lighter in weight, at 12 to 14 lb. They are the pride and joy of the Turks, exalted for their exceptional character and unique coloring. They are van cleef and arpels frivole ring replica known for being very affectionate towards their owners and also display an alert intelligence. They enjoy the company of people and are very active, constantly playing, jumping, and exploring things. However, their most extraordinary attribute is their penchant for water. This liking is not van cleef and arpels engagement ring fake limited only to pawing water and playing with it, but extends to entering ponds for a swim! The name 'swimming cats' is synonymous for them the world over.
An interesting tale about the Turkish Van states that the large rump spot above its tail is known as the 'toe boot of Noah', for that is the spot where he kicked them off the ark for jumping and playing. However, the clever Vans learned how to swim to spite him!
Their personality and appearance makes them a prized pet all around the world. They are hypo allergenic cats because of their fine fur. They have the added benefit of being excellent pets for people with allergies.

AbstractAim Choking in children is a feared condition, which potentially can deteriorate to hypoxic cardiac arrest and death. Fast recognition and immediate initiation of basic life support replica van cleef and arpels necklace alhambra (BLS)1, primary back blows and abdominal thrusts given by bystanders and secondary activation of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) are vital for the survival.
Methods The Region of Southern Denmark has a tiered response with prehospital emergency physicians to supplement the ambulance service. EMS physicians register all contacts in a database. We reviewed the database for all children below the age of 5years who suffered from choking in 2009 to 2014.
Results From 70.289 total contacts 4.857 contacts was with children less than 5years. In this group 98 children suffered from choking. In 78% BLS had resolved the obstructing foreign body before arrival of EMS services. Seventeen children had successful treatment with BLS by ambulance personal. Five children required advanced airway management and one child required cardiopulmonary resuscitation. No deaths were registered. None of the children with near fatal choking had any comorbidity prior to incident.
Conclusion Choking in children is an uncommon emergency with replica vintage alhambra necklace only 0,14% of all contacts. We found like others2 that BLS solves most cases before arrival of EMS. This demonstrates the importance of immediate initiation of BLS and keeping the chain of survival as a concept. Death to imitation van arpels and cleef necklace choking is rare among small children. Scientists in Flying Telescope Race to Intercept Pluto's Shadow
Monday, blades slicing through the frigid winter air. It was time to rise above the clouds to see Pluto slide across the face of a distant star a rare celestial alignment that scientists around the world had been anticipating for years.
As the plane hurtled down the runway, the plucky bass and rumbling baritone of Johnny Cash singing "I Walk the Line" filled the communications headsets.
The lights of Christchurch, New Zealand fell away, and scientists on board the flying telescope the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) quickly got to work. For the next eight hours, the 2.5 meter telescope would stare into the sky, while the crew tried to fly it right through Pluto's shadow.
If all went well, the team would collect crucial data on the dwarf planet's atmosphere, which no one even knew existed until 1988. When combined with the New Horizons Pluto flyby on July 14, the night's observations would help scientists decipher the last three decades of data gathered from Earth.
(Read about the Pluto flyby in National Geographic's July cover story.)
For this to work, we would need to fly the plane right through the center of the shadow cast by Pluto as it crossed the face imitation vca necklace of that star a line that would prove hard to catch. After all, the shadow is only as wide as Pluto itself. And plotting a course that accounts for orbital velocities, cosmic alignment, science observations, other airplanes and the speed of a Boeing 747? It's not simple.
That's why "I Walk the Line" was just the song to see us off.
Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It
Called an occultation, the event would last just two minutes, and it would be visible only from a narrow wedge along Earth's surface.
Seven miles below us, teams of astronomers had gathered in more than a half dozen locations in southern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, the land masses predicted to fall within the Pluto size shadow. Meanwhile, we would fly high above the southern Pacific Ocean, where clouds could not obscure our view.
"The airplane makes all the difference in the world. It's never cloudy, and you can go exactly where you want to," said Ted Dunham of the Lowell Observatory, one of the scientists on the flight. "And," he added with a grin, "it's a big telescope."
Our goal was to intercept Pluto's shadow at the precise moment the dwarf world darkened the face of that faraway star. If we succeeded, three instruments on board would gather crucial data about Pluto's misbehaving atmosphere. Two would be keeping an eye on the sky in visible wavelengths, the other in infrared.
Together, the data would help scientists figure out how Pluto's atmosphere has evolved over the 27 years we've known about it, and perhaps solve some mysteries that emerged during the very first Pluto occultation.
Plus, scientists will compare the data with observations from the New Horizons spacecraft, which will buzz by Pluto on July 14 and return the first ever close up views of the dwarf world.
"We can directly compare this profile to the one derived from New Horizons in two weeks," said MIT's Michael Person, principal investigator on the flight. "That'll help us calibrate all of the observations we've been making for 20 years, and all of the observations we'll make after New Horizons leaves."
Occultations let scientists turn those faraway stars into flashlights that can reveal details about a world's atmospheric structure and composition, its weather, the world's width, and whether it's surrounded by rings or moons.
"It goes to show how rich these events are, and they only last for 90 seconds," said Dunham, who discovered rings around Uranus during a 1977 occultation.
But early attempts van cleef turquoise necklace knock off to observe Pluto occultations, in 1965, 1980, and 1985, were woefully unsuccessful. Twice, this was because of unfortunate viewing coordinates. Once, explosions from an ongoing air war between Israel and Jordan made the data difficult to interpret.
It wasn't until 1988, when another telescope took to the sky, that we finally got a good look at an eclipsing Pluto. The results were every bit as profound as expected: Pluto had an atmosphere, and though it was thin, it was remarkably puffy. At that time, planet Pluto was nearing the point in its egg shaped orbit where it was closest to the sun. Scientists expected that as Pluto moved farther from our home star, the dropping temperatures might lead to atmospheric collapse.
In other words, the entire atmosphere "should turn to ice and land on the ground," Person said.
Trouble is, data from the next occultation, in 2002, suggested the opposite: Pluto's atmosphere had gotten puffier. Now, 27 years after that first observation, scientists are still waiting for Pluto's air to freeze out and fall onto the ground. They're also still trying to decipher some curious kinks in the original data that suggest a low altitude layer of haze might hug the planet. The new observations could help with that as will the New Horizons flyby.
"I'm really glad we have this opportunity so close to the flyby," Dunham said. "We get to cheat and look up the answer in the back of the book."
Which Line Are We Walking, Again?
When scientists recalculated the intercept point, this time accounting for the curvature of the Earth, the point had moved even farther closer to 300 kilometers away from the original estimate.
"We're scared imitation van cleef & arpels alhambra necklace of it," Person said, taking a look at the map.
"So you don't want to make a judgment and override this?" asked NASA's Jeffrey Van Cleve, who was helping plot the new flight plan.
No, Person said. They would take a gamble on the new coordinates.
Ironically, the new target was incredibly close to Christchurch. "If we had stayed on the runway and opened the door, we could have done this," Van Cleve joked. "That's called the Mach 0 flight plan."
