GDA - Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e.V. (German aluminium association), Düsseldorf, has awarded the winners of the International Aluminium Die Casting Competition 2018 as part of the EUROGUSS 2018 in Nuremberg. Prizes were awarded by a jury of experts from research and practice to three castings from renowned manufacturers with a further three castings receiving special commendations. The 8th International Aluminum Die Casting Competition is organized by the GDA. It was partnered by the Association of the German Foundry Industry (BDG). For many years, the Aluminium Die-casting Award has proven to be a successful platform for demonstrating the high quality standards of aluminium die-castings. The aim of the competition is to boost interest in aluminium, a versatile material, still further and to demonstrate further fields of application. Criteria for evaluating the castings, submitted to the Aluminum Die Casting Competition 2018, were the die-cast conform and resource efficient construction.
This entry was commended for the methodical approach adopted with respect to devel-opment, design, vertical range of manufacture and casting from a single source. The component has a high function density that can only be achieved by close cooperation between the development department and the foundry. The complex geometry and the demanding tolerances require special cooling measures, and these were achieved using additive-manufactured tool inserts (see photo left).

Aluminum die casting is a manufacturing process for producing accurately dimensioned, sharply defined, smooth or textured-surface aluminum parts through the use of reusable molds, called dies. The aluminum die casting process involves the use of a furnace, aluminum alloy, die casting machine, and die. Dies that usually constructed with long-lasting, quality steel have at least two sections to permit removal of castings.

The aluminum casting dies that are created using hardened tool steel must be made in at least two sections so that castings can be removed. The aluminum die casting process is capable of producing tens of thousands of aluminum castings in quick succession. The dies are firmly mounted in the die casting machine. The fixed half die is stationary. The other one, injector die half, is movable. Aluminum casting dies can be simple or complicated, with movable slides, cores or other parts, depending on the complexity of the casting. To begin the die casting process, the two die halves are clamped together by casting machine. High temperature liquid aluminum alloy is injected into the die cavity and rapidly solidified. Then the movable die half is opened and the aluminum casting is ejected.

To date, the complete cycle of aluminum die casting has been the fastest cycle to produce precision aluminum parts. This is in stark contrast to sand casting, which requires new sand molds for each casting. Although the permanent mold process uses iron or steel molds instead of sand, it is much slower and less precise than aluminum die castings.

Toyota is ramping up electric vehicle deployment plans, pulling forward its goal of selling 5.5 million electrified vehicles by five years and aiming to develop a solid-state battery by next summer as it races to meet a "sudden surge" of EV popularization.Wireless Charger on car

Toyota now aims to sell some 5.5 million traditional gasoline-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, EVs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2025. Nearly 1 million of them could be pure EVs.

Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi, Toyota's r&d chief, outlined the new roadmap in a June 7 briefing about the company's EV plans. In December 2017, the company had said it wanted to sell that many electrified vehicles by 2030, five years later than the revised outlook.

Terashi added that the company wants to unveil a solid-state battery for electrified vehicles ahead of next year's Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The technology, which promises lighter, more powerful and safer batteries, could be a breakthrough in popularizing electric vehicles.

"Wanting to make an effort is not enough. You really should be able to deliver," Terashi said."If possible, by the time we have the Olympic games next year, we would like to make sure that a solid-state battery can be unveiled to the public," Terashi said.Indeed, Terashi cited a "sudden surge" in their popularization for revising the EV rollout."Progress has surpassed the target," Terashi said. "We have entered a new age."

Toyota is ramping up its EV development plans, partly in response to increasingly stringent emissions requirements in China and Europe. It plans to start making EVs in China next year on its way to releasing as least 10 BEVs (battery-powered models) worldwide by the early 2020s.

Toyota will not be abandoning the trademark hybrid technology pioneered in the Prius. It also aims to have electrified versions of every model in the Toyota and Lexus lineups by 2025.But EVs have taken on fresh priority. As part of the new plan, Toyota plans to introduce an ultra-compact, two-seat EV in Japan in 2020. It will have a range of 100 kilometers (62 miles).

Volkswagen's Center of Excellence for Battery Cells chief Frank Blome said that the goal for the upcoming MEB-based electric car is to guarantee a minimum capacity of 70% for eight years or 160,000 km (around 100,000 miles).Car Mobile Phone holder Charger

The battery pack is expected to last as long as the cars. Because cars are generally used a lot longer than eight years, we assume that the base scenario is to use the original batteries as long as possible, despite gradual capacity fade, to the point when the car is too old/costly to maintain.

Blome said also that the new generation of models (I.D. family) are essentially cars built around the battery.Yes, absolutely. For our new electric models we’ve essentially built the car around the battery, so there’s plenty of space to store power. This lets us achieve ranges of up to 550 kilometers, and at affordable prices. The battery modules used to be distributed in various places in the car – but now the battery is compactly located between the axles in the underbody. This means we have a central distribution point for the energy. It’s one of the big advantages of our new MEB electric drive platform.

How long do the batteries last?

Our aim is always for our batteries to last as long as the cars. We guarantee a minimum capacity of 70 percent for eight years or 160,000 kilometers. But drivers can also influence the length of a battery’s service life. Normal charging is better for the batteries than rapid charging, and charging the batteries up to just 80 instead of 100 percent also increases their service life.

Isn’t it a little impractical not to charge the car completely?

In most cases 80 percent is more than enough. Many customers tend to drive short distances, like going to work or going shopping. The battery doesn’t have to be charged 100 percent for that. You do your driving and charge the car when needed, usually at your home wallbox. Of course, if customers want, it’s always possible to charge cars up to the full range. To meet this need, Volkswagen is working with other carmakers to build a network of rapid charging stations on European freeways. That will especially help customers going on long trips, like setting off on vacation.

A New Zealand skin cancer surgeon says gel and UV light nail manicures should be banned and studies need to be done in Australasia to show people that they're unsafe.
Dr Maria Reeves was speaking on Seven Sharp, which reported using UV lamps for gel manicures became a multi-billion dollar industry within a couple of years, but the safety of the treatments is in contention.mini electric nail drill
Dr Reeves said she would advise people against the gell, or shellac manicure, "because nobody has proved to me yet that it's safe".
"The evidence now is showing me the opposite - it is not safe."
There's currently no proven link between the nail lamps and skin cancer in New Zealand.
They've been available here less than a decade, and Dr Reeves' concern is that we will see the damage turning into cancers down the track.
She said there's evidence outside New Zealand of "a type of skin cancer coming out because of shellac".
Reports relied on by the nail industry claim the UVA light lamps are safer than the sun , while other research states the UV nail lamps can cause DNA damage.We need to do studies in New Zealand and Australia to show the people, our people, that this actually causes problems," Dr Reeves said.
Nail technician Serenity Fox says she would never put her clients at risk.
"UVA light is perfectly safe. I don't want to say perfectly safe but you'd have to be sitting under a lamp for about six hours in order to get the equivalent of 10 minutes in the sun," Ms Fox said.
"If I genuinely believed that this posed a risk to my clients, I wouldn't offer it as a service," she said, adding that there's enough research to give her confidence to provide the service.
Ms Fox said if the treatment led to skin cancers ,"I would have expected to have some sort of throw back consequences myself from being exposed to all these products and lights".
The industry's advice states that if a client expresses anxiety a technician could cover the hands or offer broad-spectrum sunscreen.
The Skin Cancer Foundation's advice is that the client apply their own broad spectrum sunscreen half an hour before the treatment so it has time to soak in.
