The Oilers, on the other hand, now sit last in the Western Conference, six points behind the Flames and mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with a fan base fed up with a fifth straight losing season. President of hockey operations Kevin Lowe pronounced the team to be "poised for greatness" last season, yet that greatness remains to be seen. With both team already looking toward next season, the question in the Battle of Alberta is which team will make the playoffs first: the Flames or the Oilers? On paper, it would appear the advantage is with the Oilers. The team has three former first-overall draft picks on their roster and two other first-round picks in Sam Gagner and Jordan Eberle. Their goaltending tandem is set for next season with Ben Scrivens and Viktor Fasth and the team has their 2013 first-round pick, Darnell Nurse, developing in the OHL. The Flames appear to be on a much steadier course, trusting in Burke to put together a team that will enter the playoffs in the near future. Burke also inspired confidence with his 2013 first-round draft pick Sean Monahan. Monahan is second on the Flames in goals this season with 19 and fifth on the team in total points with 31. Both the Oilers and Flames will likely be in the draft lottery this season with a chance to select first overall, a disappointment for Edmonton and an expectation for Calgary. "Im an impatient guy. We have to do some bold things to move this team forward in a rapid fashion. We have to a better job arming our coaches and our core players with a group to get us to a highly-competitive level," Craig MacTavish said when he was introduced was the Oilers general manager last season. After spending the last 10 weeks on recallable injured reserve with a second broken leg in less than a year, all Brown cares about is playing against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. "Sitting out this long, as long as I go in there and make a play or two, thats what I am looking forward to," Brown said Wednesday after practice. "Its not about starting. Its just about being back out there, especially coming from where I came from: the humble beginnings and breaking (the leg) and going through this adversity again and coming back. Its a surreal moment to go out and play football again." Brown has not had the easiest career in the NFL. The five-year veteran has had a career marked by injuries and a nomadic journey from team to team. He finally seemed to catch on last year with the Giants, scoring eight touchdowns in 10 games, playing mostly in passing and goal-line situations. Unfortunately, he broke his left fibula in late November and broke it again in the same spot in the preseason finale against New England. "The doctors said the odds of being hit in the same spot and breaking it again were just crazy," Brown said. The leg has healed and Brown had been practicing for the past two weeks. He fully expects to play Sunday and he cant hide his excitement. He wants the ball handed to him. He wants to feel the thud of getting popped. He wants to hit someone. He wants to play football again for a team that a couple of weeks ago didnt have a starting halfback because of injuries. "I am ready to roll," Brown said. "I am pretty sure they are going to switch us in and out to make sure I have my wind. Its not about the leg. Its about me getting back in football shape, which I am in, but getting used to contact and seeing how that goes." Coach Tom Coughlin indicated Brown will have a role. "Im looking forward to the return of that player, quite frankly," Coughlin said. "Size, speed, he can catch the ball out of the backfield, he does a good job in pass protection. You sometimes forget that the guy is 230 pounds. Thats a little bit of a different dimension." Coming off a bye, the Giants have three potential starters with Brandon Jacobs healthy and Peyton Hillis. Hillis seemingly is more in shape after coming in off the street and carrying the brunt of the running attack with David Wilson (neck) and Jacobs (hamstring) sidelined. Coughlin joked about Browns role when pressed about how much he would be able to do, saying he envisions Brown would carry the ball 40 times, catch 15 passes and return kickoffs. Allen would comment that year that, "he had never worked with a coach that held him that accountable before." Allen would go on to say that, "coach Kent would stand behind him in practice early on and quiz him after every throw, asking what did you see, what was the read, and where should you go with the ball," and expected immediate answers. That year Allen was named the CFLs Most Outstanding Player. In the 2007 season Austin landed the head coaching job in Saskatchewan and had even more say as to which quarterback would start, and how that pivot would be handled and coached, and for Austin, that meant a hands on approach. That year his student would be Kerry Joseph again, a QB that was an athlete first and a quarterback second according to the media. Joseph was a former safety in his NFL days but was able to play his favourite position when arriving in Ottawa in 2003. Over the ccourse of four years as a starter Joseph, much like Allen at that time, was being praised for his ability to run the ball, but there were very few mentions of his passing prowess. Puma Fierce Mujer. Joseph was averaging 236 yards passing per game prior to 2007, and had averaged 19.8 TDs/year for the four seasons. Enter Austin, who Joseph says, "expanded my knowledge of the game, and took my mental game to a whole new level." According to KJ, Austin was a perfectionist in practice, always making sure he understood what to do with the football on every play. "Coach Austin would always say, you have to know on every play where you should be going with the football," Joseph recalled. The quarterback knowing what he should be doing with the ball is at times different than what he actually does with the ball, even on successful plays. Just because a QB finds an open receiver for a long TD, or scrambles to buy time, and makes a play down the field doesnt necessarily mean it was what he should have done with the ball. Joseph while playing for Austin had to know what he should have done with it on every play, despite the outcome of the play. In 2007 the Riders would win their third Grey Cup in franchise history, and Kerry Joseph won the leagues Most Outstanding Player award. What does all this mean for Henry Burris? Well it is hard to imagine that Burris could improve on his numbers from last year. He threw for a league-leading 5,367 yards and 43 touchdowns, both personal bests. However if there is anyone that could coach an even better year out of Burris it would be Kent Austin. After Austin signed in Hamilton, Joseph sent a text to Burris and congratulated him for getting Austin as his coach, and told him to prepare for his best year ever. In 2012 the MOP in the CFL was Chad Owens, and no player deserved it more. When you average over 200 yards per game you are the most outstanding player in the league. However, if in 2013 Burris stays healthy, and like Allen in 05, and Joseph in 07, takes his "mental game" to a whole new level, he just may add a second MOP award to his resume. The umps went 3 for 3 on Monday as MLB tried out the new format at three spring training games. The first test came at 3:06 p.m. EST in Fort Myers, Fla., after first base umpire Fieldin Culbreth ruled Toronto shortstop Munenori Kawasakis throw pulled Jared Goedert off the bag in the sixth inning. "Im not too sure that youre not right here," Culbreth said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told him, "but since we havent done it before, lets go take a look." Culbreth answered: "OK. Thats what its for." After 2 minutes, 34 seconds, replay umpire Brian ONora relayed his call by headset, confirming that Minnesota batter Chris Rahl was safe. During the wait, Rahl said he realized he perhaps was part of history. "Its kind of funny. I was thinking, Is this the first one?" he said. ONora made the final ruling from a satellite truck outside the stadium. During the regular season, umpires on the field will check with the replay booth in New York, where an MLB umpire will make the final call. Later in the game, Culbreth rotated and took a turn in the truck, confirming another safe call at first base. "Im looking at this thing as, this is the future of the game. And Im going to treat these games here the same way that Im going to treat them during the regular season," Culbreth said. In the eighth inning, Doug Bernier of the Twins was called safe on a close play at first. As Culbreth studied the replay, the ballpark sound system played a Rolling Stones song with the familiar lyric, "I cant get no satisfaction." The call was confirmed, Bernier was safe. Extra replay also was in place for two games in Arizona -- the Los Angeles Angels vs. Arizona Diamondbacks in Scottsdale and the Chicago Cubs against Milwaukee in Phoenix. Each team in the majors will have at least five exhibition games with the new system in place. In January, owners approved the use of additional video replay to review most calls other than balls-and-strikes. Previously, umpires could only go to replay to review home runs and boundary calls. Moments after the first replay call, Angels manager Mike Scioscia wasted little time in using his challenge. In the top of the second, Luis Jimenez of the Angels tried to steal second. Catcher Bobby Wilsons throw was high but second base umpire Bill Miller ruled that Aaron Hill tagged the runner out. Scioscia bounded out of the dugout and charged toward Miller to argue, just like managers always have done. Instead, though, he chose to use his challenge. After two of the umpires made a quick visit to the Angels dugout to communicate with the replay umpire, the call was upheld. "We werent trying to make a mockery out of it," Scioscia said of using the challenge so soon. "We thought it was a pretty close play." There was only one angle available with the limited camera work of a spring training telecast. "If we have 15 angles of that," Scioscia said, "theres a possibility it gets reversed." That review took 2:31. Since he lost the challenge, Scioscia had no more. "I dont think its going to take much time in the logistics. That will smooth out," he said. "As far as the strategy of it, thats going to take a lot. It might be something you win, but you know you need that challenge to save the big play somewhere." Gibson said he thought about contesting a close play when Paul Goldschmidt nearly beat out a grounder but said he decided it was 50-50 and not worth it. "I think its going to be a lot more complicated than we thought," Gibson said. "We had a lot of conversation during the game." Teams are allowed to have a person to watch the game on television and advise the managers via phone whether it would be worth it for the call to be challenged. The Angels communicated via walkie talkie Monday but there will be a dedicated phone line for each team in the major league parks. Under the new rules, each manager has one challenge. If the first challenge is successful, the manager gets a second. From the seventh inning on, if the manager is out of challenges, the umpire can decide to have the play reviewed. Some critics of expanded replay worried that challenges would delay the game too much. Culbreth said he didnt think that would be a problem, and pointed at the benefits. "It will work itself out. I think time really isnt going to be an issue in the end," he said. "And if it is, its about getting the play right in the end, anyhow." The Minnesota Vikings said their star running back had an operation Thursday to repair his adductor muscle, which is part of the groin.
