Model of the Origin of Life and Other Hypotheses

Metabolism before Nucleic Acids

Some scientists believe that the steps to create a self replication molecule, as posited by the "RNA world" hypothesis would be too complex and impossible to sustain. They also argue that before such an orderly process as self replication would arise, it would be more likely that chemical reactions involving the abundant inorganic compounds present on primitive Earth would have predominated.

At the end of the 1980s, Gnther Wchtershuser, a German biochemist, proposed the "metabolism first" hypothesis. He observed that iron pyrite (also known as iron disulfide), or fool's gold, is able to catalyze biochemical reactions and the presence of iron pyrite on the early Earth would have quickly led to a proliferation of chemical reactions that take place in living things today. Indeed, many enzymes present in modern cells contain iron pyrite clusters within their structure, attesting to the importance of fool's gold. The "metabolism first" hypothesis essentially posits that the precursor to life was not a nucleic acid based chain that replicated itself, but a structure that metabolized inorganic compounds on the surface of iron pyrite, most likely around small deep sea hydrothermal vents.

Of Hydrothermal Vents and Fatty Acids

The proponents of the "metabolism first" model were the first to propose that life originated around deep sea hydrothermal vents. Since these structures are located well below the surface of the water, any nascent life would be protected from the damaging UV rays of the sun; at this point in earth's history, there was no ozone layer to protect life. Also, while the intense bombardments experienced by Earth during its early process of formation had imitation Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet subsided somewhat, bodies from space would still hit the planet, obliterating anything on the surface; life located deep in the sea would be protected from these bombardments.

Furthermore, while all scientists agree that water is extremely necessary for the origin of life, there has been the objection that life originating in the oceans would seem highly unlikely because the concentrations of the building blocks necessary to build the molecules would be far too dilute. Concentrating everything near hydrothermal vents would make chemical collisions far more likely. Finally, hydrothermal vents release copious amounts of chemical substances and dissolved gases and facilitate thermal cycling; these conditions provide for very convenient sources of energy. Interestingly, DNA research attempting to shed light on the most recent common ancestor of all living things seems to point to a microorganism that lived in an aquatic environment, at extremely high temperatures. This organism would have been perfectly adapted to a hydrothermal vent habitat.

Again, however, the issue of the first cell needs to be tackled. Life today can indeed be characterized by a specific set of biochemical reactions; but these chemical reactions need to be separated from the environment surrounding them or they would be of no use to an organism. Some scientists argue that the proteinoid proto cell is not very similar to a modern cell membrane, composed primarily of lipids or fats. What these scientists claim is that primitive fatty acid molecules would have been present on Earth, and very well could have been present in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents. Fatty acids, when in solution, spontaneously form "bubbles", called micelles. Some hinge on details regarding either how replication of a molecule like a nucleic acid started, while others hinge on where life started exactly. An example of the former is the "clay hypothesis", put forward by A. Graham Cairns Smith in the mid 1980s, who was troubled by the absence of "scaffolding" for the early replication of molecules. He proposed that the copy Van cleef clover bracelet first organic molecules needed some kind of platform, or replica Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet template, to aid their replication; the platform was clay, or silicate crystals in solution. Scientists have researched the idea of crystals as templates and found that there may be some basis to the idea. As an example of the latter, there is the "deep biosphere" model of Thomas Gold, proposed in the 1970s, which states that life may have originated several kilometers below Earth's surface and could have taken advantage of reactions between minerals and gases.

Finally, there are some scientists who subscribe to the idea that life, or at least organic molecules, arose somewhere in space and found their way to Earth by some means, usually an asteroid or a comet. The theories of panspermia and exogenesis are found in this category. Organic material is actually relatively common in outer space, having been found on rocks originating from Mars and on comets. Researchers have taken water, ammonia, carbon monoxide and methanol, have frozen this mixture and then have exposed it to UV radiation; these conditions would be similar to those found in extraterrestrial environments. Organic molecules were created and these molecules, when hydrated, formed bubbles. The simple fact that organic molecules (the basic building blocks of life as we know it, such as proteins, sugars and fatty acids) is found in outer space, though, does not provide the definitive answer to the question as to exactly how these organic molecules arose in the first place.

At this point, a number of scientists allow for the possibility that perhaps more than one of these "models" is true. In other words, perhaps life arose through a combination of mechanisms, or perhaps life "tried" to get started along different pathways. We may never know which one was ultimately the successful pathway that led to life as we know it. The important thing is that mechanisms are being discovered in which the basic building blocks of life are created and linked together by physical and chemical means, by processes that very well could have operated on early Earth. To wrap up the series, we'll look at what these origin of life theories mean for the search for extraterrestrial life and what kind of clues could indicate that life may have been or may be present on other planets.

Also on my replica van cleef clover necklace yellow gold list: the famous cut into the ground churches inLalibela; theKaffa region, considered the birthplace of coffee; and ruggedSimien Mountains National Park, a remarkable landscape of canyons, buttes, and rock formations that is said to rival the Grand Canyon and was one of the very first places to become a World Heritage site. Wise, Senior Editor,National Geographic Traveler

I been wanting to make a trip to Savannah ever since I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evilyears and years ago. Where do you want to go in 2014 and why? Tell us in the comments section for a chance to appear on the Intelligent Travel blog:

In April of 2013 I vised Paris for the first time (with National Geographic Expeditions) and absolutely loved it. I took some amazing pictures while I was in Paris (and in Montmartre) but never got to see the South of France, which I would love to do. Last year I went on a photographic tour of Tuscany which was wonderful, but, being of Southern Italian heritage I wanted to revisit the South of Italy (the Amalfi coast and Sicily) where I had been in 1994 (my first time in Europe). So, my next trip to Europe will probably be the South of Italy and the South of France (Provence).

Mark Twain's vendetta volume

Mark Twain and Isabel Van Kleek Lyon. (From Robert Slotta )

There are a lot Van Cleef & Arpels alhambra necklace black replica of reasons why Laura Skandera Trombley spent 16 years working on a book about a woman whom generations of Mark Twain biographers dismissed as inconsequential to his life. But the biggest catalyst was the 450 page elephant in the room a manuscript Twain wrote in his final years savaging the reputation of his former personal assistant, Isabel Van Kleek Lyon.

That manuscript, never published but well known to Twain scholars, had little in common with "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and the other books that made Twain one of the nation's first celebrities. At its heart, Trombley believes, the manuscript was a blackmail tool, a libelous screed against Lyon, whose life Twain was fully prepared to ruin to protect family secrets and his place in American history.

Early biographers believed the manuscript's details, including Twain's imitation Van Cleef & Arpels alhambra necklace charge that Lyon tried to seduce him, to be true and that Lyon's role in Twain's life was too minute to bother with. But Trombley saw the work as an elaborate lie and wondered why Twain would bother. Her speculation turned into obsession, and eventually into "Mark Twain's Other Woman: The Hidden Story of His Final Years" (Alfred A. Knopf: 332 pp., $27.95), her third book dealing with Twain's life and legacy.

In the new book, Trombley dissects the long dismissed relationship between Twain and Lyon, whose ambitions brought her to the upper levels of American letters before Twain cast her off, publicly vilifying her to reporters as a conniver and thief.

In the end, Trombley says, Lyon became the victim of Twain's jealous daughter, Clara, and the fears of "an old man being overwhelmed and just at that point really emotionally reacting to converging forces. And one of those was the loss of his wife."

"Nobody had ever really spent much time writing about it," says Trombley, a Twain scholar whose day job is president of Claremont's Pitzer College. "When you think about it, here's Twain in the last years of his life, 450 pages he devotes to this. Why wouldn't you make this a major big deal?"

Trombley has proved to be adept at peeling back Samuel L. Clemens' carefully constructed persona and forcing scholars to reconsider some basic assumptions, says Bruce Michelson, professor of English at the University of Illinois, and president of the Mark Twain Circle of America.

Breaking the 'boys Van Cleef & Arpels necklace gold replica club'

Michelson, in fact, credits Trombley and fellow Twain scholar Susan Harris of the University of Kansas for challenging the conclusions of what he described as "pretty much a boys' club." Their research has forced Twain experts to recognize that women were the "majority party" in his adult life and made up the majority of his book reading audience in his lifetime, Michelson said. Their research showed that "scholars had to come down from the tree house and take down the 'Men Only' sign."

Michelson says he hasn't read Trombley's new work yet but lauded her decision to take on the subject of Twain's last years, which form a "special sort of mystery and [are] a mess to deal with. . . . He was bereaved; he had lost most of his money; his health was compromised; his celebrity had slipped away from his grip and taken on a life of its own; his friends and family and opportunists were fighting over what was left of him and his legacy."

Olivia became, in many ways, the steadying rudder in his life. One of Trombley's earlier books, "Mark Twain in the Company of Women," was her first major assault on conventional beliefs about Twain, arguing convincingly that Twain's best work, including "Huckleberry Finn," came when he was living in Hartford and surrounded by women: his wife and their three daughters (a son had died at 19 months), Susy, Clara and Jean. All but Clara would die before Twain.

Trombley believes the influence of women on Twain, including his wife's introducing him to leading social issues of the day, has been wrongly dismissed by chroniclers, beginning with Twain's hand picked biographer and first literary executor, Albert Bigelow Paine.

But Trombley thinks there's more at play behind the marginalization of Lyon than blinders on the biographers' eyes. She believes Twain and Clara exerted control over those early scholars. Why? Trombley believes it was because of Twain's outspoken positions on adultery, and his fear for his legacy and Clara's financial well being. The points of friction in the story of Twain and Lyons mirror a Victorian drama.

Modern Uses for copy Van Cleef & Arpels wedding ring AHA's

Research of Eugene J. and R. J. opened the modern era of AHA use. In 1976 they reported that glycolic acid, in specially made products, helped in the therapy of a scaling skin disease (ichtyosis) and in 1988 they founded NeoStrata, a company where they continue to develop novel methods for the treatment of skin ailments.

Further studies by these researchers indicated a use for alpha hydroxy acids in skin renewal however, Van Cleef & Arpels ring replica their work was ignored by the skin care producers until the 1990s when alpha and beta hydroxy acids began to be incorporated into skin care solutions (Van Scott and Yu 1989). Later, Stiller et al made large scale, placebo controlled studies with AHAs and found they helped skin healing and treated premature aging caused by sun exposure (Stiller et al 1996). Their use was later expanded to chemical peels (Dial 1990).

Using Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's) is one of the best methods of skin renewal. Their efficiency depends on the type and concentration of the AHA, its pH (acidity), and other components in the product. AHAs become efficient at concentrations of about 7% to 8% with an acidity of 3.5 to 4.0. Many AHA containing cosmetic solutions influence skin renewal very little because the AHA concentrations are too low and the pH is too high. There is little evidence that concentrations below 5% have beneficial effects on skin and more specifically on scars.

Skin improvements should be evident after four weeks of AHA application, but AHA therapy also helps maintain a healthy skin and this state is usually continued indefinitely. They can be used to smooth fine lines and surface wrinkles, to enhance skin texture and tone, oily skin or acne, or to unblock and cleanse pores. Basically, AHAs better the skin condition in general. What they really do is speed up the turnover of skin cells and enhance the rebuilding of collagen and elastin plus better the internal moisture holding abilities of GAGs and proteoglycans. With continued use, AHAs alleviate fine to moderate wrinkles, and remove many skin lesions such as sun damage, mild acne scars, weathered skin, age spots, freckling, benign overgrowths of skin, blotchy pigmentation, and flat warts. They appear to work by increasing the skin peeling of the lesion plus an irritation around the injury. In time the lesion turns smaller and is replaced by normal healthy skin.

Alpha hydroxy acids are helpful in alleviating oily and acne prone skin. People with these conditions usually see drastic results. Blackheads, white heads and acne breakouts are caused when the hair follicles clog and trap sebum in the follicle. Eliminating the upper layer of skin promotes natural sebum flow to the skin.

meet the man behind the foodie Instagram account with nearly 250k followers

Symmetry Breakfast is an Instagram feed run by couple of three years, Michael Zee, who works in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and menswear fashion designer Mark van Beek, who live together in Hackney Central. Each morning they post a picture of two identical breakfasts which they eat together they have 246,000 followers and counting. Michael Zee tells Victoria Stewart how it all came about.

Where did the idea for Symmetry Breakfast come from?

The idea was actually Mark's old boss. We were at his birthday and he commented on how much he liked the idea; I had been posting it to my personal Instagram for a few months but then I set Symmetry Breakfast up in a pub in Chelsea and that was it. It was about 18 months after we started seeing each other and about 6 months after Mark moved in.

Have you ever missed a day?

We've posted every single day but one.

How does it work? Do you share everything?

I do all of the cooking at home. We try to go food shopping together as much as possible and it generally boils down to me asking Mark what he fancies. He is great at focusing at a particular food Van Cleef ring copy or ingredient that he loves and I then try to build a meal with or around it. I also style and photograph all the photos, which I take on my iPhone 5S.

What are you planning to cook next?

I've got a lot of ideas going around the upcoming General Election. I did a Scottish breakfast for the referendum and one about the recent solar eclipse. I need to do some research first, but maybe we could have a picnic outside of Parliament?

How do you choose what to cook? What inspires the photographs?

We just came back from a long holiday in India that was really inspiring but sometimes, for example, it can be the plate that inspires a dish.

What recipe have you followed recently that you really enjoyed?

Recently in Italy I was cooking breakfast for a house of 20 people. One day I made a twist on French toast filled with ricotta and renamed it Tuscan Toast. It was a four day event and I had never been tested so thoroughly to cook everyday for such a large group in a stranger's kitchen.

Where is your favourite breakfast in London?

I would definitely recommend Parlour in Kensal Rise, copy Van Cleef & Arpels ring the unlimited toast is enough to bring you in from anywhere in London.

Museum unconvinced by Van Gogh death theory

"We cannot yet agree with their conclusions because we do not think there is enough evidence yet," Jansen told The Associated Press. At the same time, there has never been any independent evidence to support Van Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra Necklace copy Gogh's dying confession that he had shot himself."There's no proof. We just know what he said, and that's what people always went by," Jansen said.Severely wounded in the chest, Van Gogh dragged himself to the rooming house in Auvers sur fake Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry necklace Oise, France, where Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry copy necklace he was staying. He died about 30 hours later after telling his brother Theo, several doctors and the police that he had shot himself while painting in a wheat field. The gun was never found. They also discovered a "guilt ridden" 1956 interview by a wealthy French businessman, Rene Secretan, who said he and his brother had known Van Gogh that summer and had tormented him mercilessly. Secretan, inspired by a Wild West show that was popular in France, borrowed a gun from the owner of the inn where Van Gogh was staying, but he claimed the artist stole it from him.Secretan recalled in the interview that they taunted Van Gogh, a lonely man who craved company, by putting salt in his coffee and getting their girl friends to tease him with fake seductions.Naifeh said the evidence indicates that the shooting "involved these two boys. And that it was either an accident or a deliberate act. Was it playing cowboy in some way that went awry? Was it teasing with the gun with Vincent lunging out? It's hard to know what went on at that moment."They theorize that Van Gogh was wounded in a farm yard closer to the inn, and that the boys fled with the gun and took the artist's materials when they fled. Van Gogh, suffering from bouts of temporal lobe epilepsy, "decided to basically protect them and accept this as the way to die. These kids had basically done him the favor of, of shooting him," said Naifeh. Although he acknowledged in his letters that he was tired of living, he considered suicide immoral and indecent. It was also a criminal offense, and survivors could be imprisoned."There's plenty of reason to look at the unclear circumstances again. It's just that their conclusion, in our opinion, is not yet sufficiently proven," Jansen said.Van Gogh was 37 when he died. He had been painting for only 10 years, but had produced nearly 1,000 paintings and 1,100 drawings. Mother Teresa's '40

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who may be canonised as a saint by the Vatican later this year, had a deep crisis of faith in God for the last 40 years of her life, according to a new set of her letters.

Mother Teresa's crisis of faith won't prevent her canonisation, says Vatican

The correspondence, which spans most of Mother Teresa's life, shows that she felt alone and in a state of spiritual pain from around 1949, roughly the time when she started taking care of the poor and dying in Calcutta.

Although she publicly proclaimed that her heart belonged "entirely to the Heart of Jesus", she Van Cleef & Arpels fake necklace wrote to the Rev Michael Van Der Peet, a spiritual confidant, in September 1979 that "Jesus has a very special love for you. As for me, the silence and emptiness is so great that I look and do not see, listen and do not hear. The tongue moves [in prayer] but does not speak."

The letter was written just a few weeks before she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her charitable work.

More than 40 other letters, many of which she had asked to be destroyed in her will, show her fighting off feelings of "darkness" and "torture".

The letters are published for the first time in a new book, Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light, and are edited by the Rev Brian Kolodiejchuk, a close friend.

He wrote that during that period, Mother Teresa did not feel God "in her heart or in the eucharist".

Mr Kolodiejchuk gathered the letters as part of the process to make Mother Teresa a saint, and is responsible for arguing in her favour. He said the letters would show people another side of her life, and said that the fact that she was able to continue her work during such torment was a sign of her spiritual heroism. Mother Teresa has been beatified, and is awaiting canonisation.

The Vatican has insisted that the revelations will not obstruct her path to sainthood.

my God, you have thrown [me] away as unwanted unloved, she wrote in one missive. call, I cling, I want, and there is no one to answer, no, no one. Alone. Where is my faith? even deep down right in there is nothing. I have no faith. I dare not utter the words and thoughts that crowd in my heart.

She added: am told God loves me, and yet the reality of the darkness and coldness and emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul. Did I make a mistake in surrendering blindly to the Call of the Sacred Heart?

She even compared her problems to hell and admitted that she had begun to doubt the existence of heaven and God.

"The smile," she wrote, "is a mask or a cloak that covers everything. I spoke as if replica Van Cleef & Arpels Albambra malachite Necklace my very heart was in love with God, a tender personal love. copy Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace If you were there you would have said, 'What hypocrisy'."

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) " Dick Advocaat was appointed Netherlands coach Tuesday with the tough task of leading the struggling team to next year's World Cup in Russia. With the Dutch national team languishing in fourth place in Group A, the Royal Dutch Football Association appointed Advocaat as coach and Ruud Gullit as his assistant for the remainder of the qualifying campaign. If they manage to get the team to Russia, they will stay in charge for the tournament, federation technical director Hans van Breukelen said.Advocaat was not present at a news conference to announce his appointment; he will remain with his current club, Fenerbahce, until the end of the Turkish league season. The 69 year old Advocaat, who was appointed for his third stint in charge of the national team, won praise in 2015 for saving Sunderland from relegation in the Premier League and will need a similar escape to avoid the Netherlands missing its second straight major tournament after last year's European Championship in France. The Netherlands is six points behind Group A leader France. Only the group winner is guaranteed a place at the World Cup.The vastly experienced Advocaat has previously coached Russia, Belgium and Serbia, as well as club teams including PSV Eindhoven, Glasgow Rangers, Zenit St. Petersburg and Sunderland.Gullit, a former Chelsea coach, captained the Netherlands to its only major tournament success, the 1988 European Championship.Advocaat's predecessor, Danny Blind, was fired in March after the Dutch lost to Bulgaria in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.Van Breuken said the hunt for a replacement focused on finding somebody "who can increase discipline in the (players') group and bring back the joy to our play."Joy has been in short supply for the three time World Cup runner up since the team's form went into free fall after reaching the semifinals of the World Cup in Brazil.Van Breukelen conceded that the search for a new coach was tough, with some possible candidates unavailable or unwilling. Everton coach Ronald Koeman and former Ajax coach Frank de Boer were both identified as possible successors shortly after Blind was fired. In the end, Advocaat was chosen despite having sparked anger among players and federation officials when he walked away from his role as Blind's assistant last year to join Fenerbahce.Van Breukelen conceded that he was "very unhappy" when Advocaat quit last year. But he said he put that feeling aside when he chose Advocaat."Quality comes ahead of sentiment," Van Breukelen. It remains to be seen what the Dutch team will make of its new coach. Van Breukelen said the players he had spoken to were surprised by the choice of Advocaat and Gullit, but "they are professionals and they will get over it."Advocaat's first match in charge imitation clover bracelet van cleef and arpels will be the team's next World Cup qualifier, against Luxembourg on June 9 in Rotterdam.
