Masked gunmen board British diving instructor's yacht in the Bahamas and shoot him dead after demanding cash

The family of a British diving instructor shot dead on his luxury yacht by armed thugs in the Bahamas today paid tribute to him saying he was "living his dream."

Father of one Gary Vanhoeck, 51, who worked as a diver on the Robert Redford Oscar nominated film 'All is Lost', was shot twice by two masked men who demanded money after mother of pearl clover bracelet replica boarding the yacht moored in a secludedcove.

Today his younger brother Wayne Vanhoeck, 43, of Grimsby, said their family were in shock adding: "Gary was a great guy with everyone who ever met him. He would do anything for anyone. The whole family will miss him. "

His elder brother worked for the Stuart Cove Dive Centre on the island of New Providence offering tourist adventures including swimming with sharks and snorkelling.

Originally from Grimsby, he left the UK more than five years ago to work in the Bahamas and wrote on his blog that he and his wife were 'Living Like Pirates, Diving in the Caribbean'.

Mr Vanhoeck moved is said to have moved out to the Bahamas five years ago

Wayne told the Standard: : "Gary lived for the moment, he went out to the Bahamas to live his dream. He had an idea of what he wanted to do and he went for it.

"He was very determined, very positive. You wanted him to be your brother. I am absolutely gutted."

Mr Vanhoeck, who spent 10 years working for the RAF after leaving home at the age of 16, had recently celebrated his third wedding anniversary with his wife Kathryn.

His younger brother, who runs a car valeting company in Grimsby, said he had been told Mrs Vanhoeck had been taken to another room when her husband was shot.

The Royal Bahamas Police have launched an island wide manhunt and are hunting four suspects, but there have been no arrests.

Nassau assistant police commissioner Stephen Dean said: "The men went onto the boat and they took him off the boat.

"They wanted money and it's not clear if he resisted or if there was a struggle. He was shot dead and they ran off.

"His wife was with him at the time."

The incident happened last Friday on the yacht that Mr Vanhoeck owns imitation van cleef white gold bracelet and uses as his home. Two men tied up a security guard while two men went on the boat.

Mr Vanhoeck, who worked copy van cleef jewelry in Swindon as a computer technician for a radio company before leaving for the Bahamas, wrote on his blog that he quit his job to pursue his dream of becoming a dive instructor.

Before he left he wrote: "To pack up ones home, say good bye to work, family and friends, head half way around the world to start a new life teaching diving!

'Will it be a dream or the biggest mistake you ever made? Who knows, but unless you try it you will always ask, "If only I had."."

Mr Vanhoeck appears to have loved his life in the Caribbean and in one Tweet he said: 'Sitting in the sun filling tanks drinking beer'

He worked at Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas, the largest snorkel and dive operation in the Caribbean island.

He was credited as a diver on the crew of the 2013 Robert Redford film 'All is Lost', which was shot in the Bahamas. He is said to have helped film the underwater shark scenes.

On a tourism website Mr Vanhoeck spoke of how he enjoyed the different kinds of fish that he saw every day diving in the tropical waters.

He said that the water was 'different every day' and that he had been taking children as young as five on day trips.

The killing is the 48th murder in the Bahamas this year and the second in 13 months involving a British citizen.

Stuart Cove, the owner of the diving business, said: 'Our dear friend and colleague Gary Vanhoeck was shot and killed in a botched robbery."

New National Guard Cyber Units May Help Retain Troops

Inside a darkened armory at the Air National Guard Station in Van Nuys, Calif., in a space the size of a gymnasium there's a imitation van cleef & arpels clover necklace horseshoe of computers. A projector casts an image on a concrete wall. It's a real time cyberattack map.

"These are attacks that are happening across the globe, back and forth cyberattacks," says Airman Christopher Watkins. "As you can see, we kind of get attacked a lot."

From outside the gate, the station is very low key. There are no Humvees, no big radar installations or Blackhawks baking in the California sun, just a few nondescript buildings. Inside, it is the front lines of cyber defense, but even this close to Hollywood, the training center doesn't match the movies.

"It's kind of hard to imagine what's happening in the digital world. Some people think it's like a magic black voodoo box that just does things," Watkins says. "It's really not. There's a lot of work behind it and a lot more work that goes behind defending it," Watkins says.

The Pentagon is giving the National Guard a new mission to help defend government systems from cyberattacks at military bases and government offices located across the country. It's standing up van cleef & arpels onyx necklace replica new cyber protection units pulling from a handful of states, including Indiana and California to support cyber defense missions already underway in the active duty army.

"So really what the focus of these teams will be is to protect the Department of Defense information network," says Col. Tim Thombleson, who commands the Indiana unit. "These teams in essence can work with a lot of imitation van cleef pendant data if somebody is trying to cause harm to our information network."

The Pentagon will stand up a total of 10 National Guard cyber protection units between now and 2018. They'll aim to protect military networks and civilian ones, since the Guard also works for state governors. In Indiana, the unit will advise on ways to protect data everything from tax returns to drivers' licenses.

The California Guard has been doing similar work on its own for a couple of years.

Col. Steve Butow, vice chief of staff for the California Military Department, says one reason his state was selected is because so many California guardsmen hold down full time jobs in the tech community. government," he says.

The Guard is hoping the cyber units will help keep troops with IT skills from leaving the service.

People like Tech Sgt. David Follin, who works full time in IT at Boeing.

But in the middle of the week recently, he was in uniform at the California Air National Guard station in Van Nuys getting extra training with the cyber unit.

"I love the Guard. It's kind of a family away from family," Follin says. "We're very close knit. You're helping your country. You're serving your nation. It feels right."

The Guard is hoping that the new cyber unit means Follin won't have to choose between patriotism and his career.

NPR along with seven public radio stations around the country is chronicling the lives of America's troops where they live. This story is part of that project, we're calling "Back at Base."

No Battle of Ontario playoff as Toronto Maple Leafs lose to Columbus Blue Jackets in regular

James van Riemsdyk, left, of the Toronto Maple Leafs, gets tangled up with Columbus Blue Jackets' Scott Harrington during NHL action Sunday in Toronto. At right is Leafs' Mitch Marner. The Blue Jackets were 3 2 winners.

Even if the Leafs do as much, their chances of upsetting the Presidents' Trophy champion in the first round of the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs are not good. The Capitals have had more than their fair share of playoff replica Van bracelet yellow gold misery in recent years, and that the Cup has eluded the grasp of Alex Ovechkin eats at the Russian superstar.

Babcock knows as much.

"They are big, they are strong, they are fast, they have been beaten a number of times in the playoffs, so they are battle tested to say the least," Babcock said, "and they are as hungry as any team in the NHL and playing as good. It should be fun."

The Leafs drew the Capitals after losing 3 2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Air Canada Centre on Sunday night, and gone was a chance to rekindle the Battle of Ontario with the Ottawa Senators.

It looked good for the Leafs through the middle of the game, as a pair of goals by James van Riemsdyk staked Toronto to a 2 0 lead. The Leafs, however, never did have the consistent energy that Babcock thought he would see, and Columbus reeled off three goals by the end of the second, getting the winner from Cam Atkinson while shorthanded.

There was some positive news on Sunday. Babcock said goaltender Frederik Andersen was not experiencing concussion symptoms and will start in Game 1 on Thursday in Washington. And defenceman Nikita Zaitsev, who suffered an upper body injury against Columbus, is expected to be in the Toronto lineup for the opener.

The Leafs will try to build off the 12 5 1 run to finish the regular season with 95 points, securing the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Caps ended with 118 points, including a 32 7 2 record on home ice.

Daunting? Yes. But the Leafs don't think the task is impossible.

"The playoffs are not going to be easy no matter how you skin the cat," Leafs defenceman and former Capital Connor Carrick said.

"So let's go to work. We're going to go into someone's building and try to give them hell.

"It's a big year for them, a lot on the line. I know teams talk about opportunities and windows and all that, and this looks like some prime years for some of their better players so there is a lot of pressure on them to come out."

Said Jake Gardiner: "You gotta beat the best at some point so might as well do it in the first round."

Inexperience could be a large factor for the Leafs to overcome, but they've done that to an extent already. None of the rookies, not Calder Trophy favourite Auston Matthews or William Nylander or Mitch Marner or the others, were crushed by the weight of expectations in the past several weeks with a playoff spot in their sights.

If that had occurred, the club would be gathering at the ACC on Monday to clean out their lockers.

Instead, the players were granted the last true day off they will enjoy in a while.

"A lot of those games (in the past month) were tight," Babcock said. "I thought we had some hiccups for sure and yet we still found ways to win games and give ourselves a chance. We are excited to say the least.

No tengas miedo.

Nigel Farage says ambitious promises made by Brexit campaigners were 'mildly irresponsible'

Brexiteers who spearheaded the campaign to persuade the British people to leave the EU have been heavily scrutinised after a number of pledges appear to have been backtracked on, including a Vote Leave campaign poster that promised to spend 350 million of EU funding a week on the NHS and plans to create a points based immigration system.

When challenged over the failed promises, the former Ukip leader and prominent Brexit campaigner told Bloomberg that some pledges were "mildly irresponsible", adding "there were lots of promises lots of ideas get discussed at any election".

The admissions occurred on the same day European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker gave his annual speech to the European Parliament which was rife with awkward truths.

With Britain walking away and some eastern nations routinely showing open hostility, the European Union's chief painted a bleak picture of the bloc and implored the 27 remaining nations to stop bickering at a time when ever more people question its relevance.

"We should admit we have many unresolved problems," he said. "The facts are plain: The world is getting bigger. And we are getting smaller."

Mr Junker used his speech to call for a joint command headquarters for EU military missions and greater defence cooperation, reviving long running efforts to reduce reliance on the United States.

He said no singleEUgovernment had a military large Van Cleef & Arpels necklace gold replica enough to deal with security challenges facing Europe, from Islamic militants to a more hostile Russia and echo a plan put forward this week by France and Germany.

"We must have aEuropeanheadquartersand so we should work towards a common military force," Mr Juncker said, although officials stressed this did not amount to anEUarmy.

"This should be to complement NATO," he said, also outlining proposals for a common defence fund.

Mr Farage, who is still an MEP after stepping down as Ukip leader, then launched into a scathing attack on the EU, saying a "declaration of war" had been issued on any sensible Brexit negotiations.

A weary eyed Mr Junker was seen holding his head in his hands as Mr Farage accused the European Parliament of already appointing its "divorce lawyers" by selecting Guy Verhofstadt as its chief Brexit negotiator.

Mr Farage said: "In terms of Brexit, you're probably right to be slightly critical of the British government, who ought to get on with it.

"But van cleef necklace black the EU is getting on with it and you've already appointed your divorce lawyers. On behalf of the European Parliament, we've got Guy Verhofstadt. He's the man who is going to be negotiating Brexit.

"If you were to think of this building [the EU Parliament] as a temple, well, Mr Verhofstadt is the high priest. A fanatic. In fact, there is only really one nationalist in this room and it's you [Verhofstadt] because you want flags, anthems, armies. you are an EU nationalist.

"I frankly think that this appointment amounts to pretty much a declaration of war on any sensible negotiation process.

Earlier this week, the co chair of the official campaign to leave the EU said the pledge regarding NHS funding was only an "example" of how such funds could be allocated.

Gisela Stuart downplayed the policy, which was printed on the side of a giant red bus during the campaign, telling the BBC Daily Politics programme earlier this week: "No, the NHS was the example of that if you're spending that amounts of money and you don't have control of what to do with it, I would spend it on the NHS."

Mr Farage's recent van cleef Clover necklace imitation comments echo those he made on the morning of the EU referendum result when he dismissed the pledge as a "mistake".

Although not affiliated with Vote Leave, Mr Farage did not speak out against the figure during the campaign, but told broadcasters hours after the votes were counted: "No I can't [guarantee spending 350m on the NHS], and I would never have made that claim. That was one of the mistakes that I think the Leave campaign made."

No deadline to trigger Article 50 and begin the formal process for Britain to leave the EU has been set by Theresa May's Government but the Prime Minister previously said negotiations would not be started in 2016.

Here's what you need to know

Media captionGillian Edwards, from Abta, has some advice for tourists travelling to Greece

"You should take appropriate security precautions against theft. There are currently no restrictions on taking unspent euros out of Greece at the end of your van cleef and arpels necklaces copy stay," it adds.

Andrew Brown, from Post Office Travel Money, says couples spend an average of around 500 in cash on a fortnight's holiday on things like meals out, local van cleef & arpels jewelry replica trips and coffees. For a family, that figure is 700.

That does not include accommodation, and the advice is to contact your hotel, internet booking company or villa owner beforehand, to see whether it is possible to pay in advance in sterling.

Once there, visitors are advised to use safes and deposit boxes to store cash, and to split money between family members.

The Foreign Office also updated its travel advice following the recent vote rejecting the terms of an international bailout, saying that "the outcome of this referendum may lead to an increase in demonstrations across the country".

Is this cash covered by travel insurance?Insurance group Aviva has doubled the cover for stolen money for people travelling to Greece having bought its travel insurance.

The standard amount of lost cash covered goes up to 600 from 300 per adult, so a couple would have 1,200 of cash protected.

The insurer said it wanted customers who were carrying more cash to Greece to be confident that they were covered if the money were lost or stolen.

Other insurers have followed suit, adding to the cash protection available but stressing the need for travellers to take care of their cash.

Travel association Abta has updated its advice, saying: "Holidaymakers should check how much cash their travel insurance policy covers them for and should take appropriate security precautions against theft such as using their hotel safe or splitting cash up between their party."

Will I be able to use pre paid currency cards or travellers' cheques?Currency cards can be loaded with a foreign currency at a pre agreed exchange rate and used in shops or at ATMs whilst abroad without incurring commissions or transaction fees.

Again, smaller shops might start to be reluctant to take them, although they are still fully functioning.

Travellers' cheques are not widely accepted so it would not be advisable to rely on them as the only source of payment.

Western Union, the world's Van Cleef and Arpels White necklace fake largest money transfer company, now allows transfers into the country but the withdrawal limits from Greek bank accounts still apply.

If Greece were to leave the eurozone, how long would euros be valid for? Post Office Travel Money's Andrew Brown says holidaymakers should not panic if Greece leaves the eurozone. If this happened, it would take around 18 months for the Greek drachma to be re introduced, during which time the euro would continue to be the legal currency.

A Visa spokesman added: "While there are some issues that would be outside Visa's control, we would work with all relevant parties to help ensure a swift transition to a new currency with the minimum possible disruption to consumers and retailers."

Will my insurance policy cover my losses if I decide to cancel? The advice from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is always to check the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice. An ABI spokesperson said: "Those who have their summer holidays planned in Greece remain covered by their travel insurance, in line with the terms and conditions."

She said that would only change if the FCO changed its stance and decided to advise against all travel. In that case, travellers would not be covered if they still decided to go, but they would be entitled to a refund, either from their travel agent or tour operator, or their insurance company.

The good news is that Greece continues to be a great bet for bargain hunters, according to the latest Post Office Travel Money resort research. The strength of sterling means families changing 500 into euros will get the equivalent of 65 more to spend compared with a year ago.

Prices in resort islands such as Crete and Corfu are down by more than 13% this year anyway which means a meal in Crete with drinks will be almost 6 cheaper, and a bottle of suncream will be 3.32 less than it was last year.

The price of holidays in Greece has also dropped.

This may be why UK package holiday bookings to Greece were up 2% in the year to 27 June, compared with the previous year, according to GfK Ascent's Leisure Travel Monitor.

Multimillion dollar drug trafficking ring run out of Fitzroy public housing flat

A14 year old girl visited a multimillion dollar drug trafficking ring operating out of an 11th floor Fitzroy public housing flat more than 70 times to either collect heroin for her mother or pay off her debts, a court has heard.

The mastermind who ran van cleef & arpels necklace knock off the drug trafficking ring, Thi Nho Em Le, 49, was jailed for 11 years with a minimum of eight years after she pleaded guilty in the County Court to one count of trafficking a commercial quantity of heroin, but appealed her sentence.

Court of Appeal Justices Robert Redlich and David Beach said Le (known as Chi fake van cleef and arpels necklace Tu), Khi Sin Mong, Thanh Hai Pham, and Thi Nho Le (known as Chi Ba) had all been involved in trafficking heroin and were arrested in August 2010 after a nine month police investigation.

Mong is Chi Tu's defacto partner, Chi Ba is her older sister, and Pham is Chi Ba's husband.

The appeal judges said Chi Tu was the principal of the heroin trafficking business involving her partner Mong, her brother Muoi Van Le and his wife Nga Thi.

Her sister, Chi Ba, ran a separate heroin trafficking business with her husband Pham and Mong.

Mong was a senior member of his defacto's heroin trafficking enterprise, sourcing and arranging the purchase of heroin from suppliers for both syndicates.

Chi Tu would give Mong money to buy the heroin. Chi Tu and her sister would then dilute the heroin and re package it into smaller amounts for sale.

Chi Tu primarily sold heroin in pre packaged amounts of 1.7 grams (blue package) or 3.5 grams (yellow package) and kept records of her sales out of the Fitzroy flat she lived in with Mong.

Her younger brother Muoi and his wife Nga, who also lived in the flat, assisted by selling heroin, receiving money, and recording sales.

Chi Tu also used her Brunswick property, occupied by her children and grandchildren, and her sister Sau Thi Le's house in St Albans, to store and prepare drugs.

The appeal judges said Chi Tu had many regular customers at the Fitzroy flat, with her 'shop' opening from 8am to 10pm.

"One customer would send her 14 year old daughter 'W' to the appellant's flat to buy heroin for her," the judges said.

"The appellant (Chi Tu) supplied W with heroin on ten occasions, on one occasion advising her to 'stash it in her bum.' W was observed attending the appellant's flat on 62 other occasions to either collect heroin or deliver money for her mother."

Chi Tu, Chi Ba, Pham and Mong would use code words to refer to heroin and to discuss its quantity and quality.

Customers wanting to purchase heroin were told to use terms such as being 'bored' and wanting to 'have fun', and were invited to come over for 'chit chat', or play Xap Xam, Tu Sac van cleef and arpels necklace knock off or cards. Money was often referred to as paper and was generally spoken about in multiples of 100 or 1000, depending on the context.

The police were referred to as 'big brother' and 'paternal grandfathers'.

The appeal judges said the amount of heroin sold was estimated to be more than 11 kilograms.

Police carried out raids in August 2010 and seized more than $2 million in cash, Crown Casino chips and jewellery.

Mong was jailed for 11 years and six with a minimum of eight years and six months, while Chi Ba was jailed for 12 years with a minimum of nine years.

Chi Tu appealed against her sentence but Justices Redlich and Beach rejected the appeal, saying the sentencing judge had carefully considered each sentence imposed on the different family members.

NDP passes motion to ban microbeads from personal products

The NDP successfully passed a motion in the House of Commons Tuesday fake vca necklace that could lead to the banning of microbeads from personal products.

The ban is good news for University of Waterloo researchers who found the microbeads throughout the Great Lakes along with other plastic debris.

Opposition MP and environment critic Megan Leslie's motion, which called for microbeads to be added to the list of toxic substances, received all party support Tuesday afternoon

Before the motion passed, Colin Carrie, parliamentary secretary to the Minister of the Environment, said the government will "prioritize" microbeads for assessment.

Microbeads are commonly used in personal products such face wash.

In December, UW's Philippe Van Cappellen and a team of researchers looked into what scientists actually knew about plastic debris in the Great Lakes, and found there was minimal research on the freshwater lakes, especially compared to the ocean.

Microbeads aren't the only problem, Van Cappellen said, but they are a big problem.

"The main issue is that they're very small and move very far from the source area," he told QMI Agency. "And they're also ingested by wildlife, which can have an effect on fish and van cleef pendant replica shellfish."

The research found the highest concentration of debris was in Lake Erie it had more debris than Lake Geneva, which has more than three times the van cleef arpels necklace replica surrounding population density.

The lack of knowledge of plastic debris in the Great Lakes is a big part of the problem, he said, adding his team has been advocating for more research on plastic's impact as well as for more regulation of things such as microbeads.
