the conviction of their father's murderer after 30 years has finally ended a lifetime in limbo

Darrell Kenyatta Evers remembers vividly the night his father, Medgar Evers, was killed.

"My sister replica van cleef red clover necklace and my brother and my mother were watching TV, sitting on the bed," he said.

The date was June 12, 1963. The family was at home in Jackson, Miss., watching President John F. Kennedy talk about a "moral crisis" in America, explaining to the country the precepts that would become the Civil Rights Act a year later. It was late and the imitation van cleef and arpels sweet alhambra necklace kids were being allowed to wait up for their father, a rare treat in the Evers household.

"My father pulled up in the driveway," Darrell said. "We were ready to greet him, because every time he came home it was special for us. He was traveling a lot at that time. All of a sudden we heard a shot. We knew what it was."

The children hit the floor as they had practiced with their father. Duck and cover drills were a part of life for black people in the South who were active in the civil rights movement. The Evers home had been attacked twice previously and nobody was taking any chances.

"My mother went to the front door to see what was wrong," he said. "And then all of a sudden, I heard her start screaming."

Evers, who was carrying a load of "Jim Crow Must Go" sweat shirts in his arms, had just come back from a civil rights rally when he was shot by a gunman hiding in a honeysuckle thicket near his driveway. The bullet went through him and into the house, and the gunman got away.

The shot that killed Medgar Evers, a 38 year old NAACP field secretary, resonated throughout America. It galvanized many into action, including Myrlie Evers, who picked up where her husband left off. But the ones for whom it perhaps rang loudest were Evers' three children.

It was they who saw their father for the last time bleeding on the front porch.

It was they who had to live in a spotlight they didn't create as they were splashed all over the nation's front pages in the days after the attack.

And it was they who were forced to endure the 30 year legal struggle that ended only last month when a Mississippi jury decided that avowed segregationist Byron de la Beckwith, now 73, was indeed the man who shot their father in the back. Twice before, all white juries had failed to reach a verdict in fake van cleef red clover necklace the murder case.

"The fact that we've all survived with the degree of sanity that we have is a miracle," Myrlie Evers, now 61, said by phone from her home in Oregon. "My children are survivors. When I look back, their lives could have easily taken a different path. They are a credit to their father. And they are my crowning achievement."

Darrell was 9 when his father was killed. Reena was 8. And James Van Dyke, known as "Van," was only 3. Against the backdrop of Myrlie Evers' activism, in the dim light of an endless court battle, the three children have quietly taken care of each other and persevered.

All three now live in Southern California and keep in close contact with their mother, who settled in Los Angeles after the shooting and began a civic career that included a stint as a Public Works Commissioner and an unsuccessful run for city council. She is now semi retired and married to Walter Williams, her husband of 18 years.

"We're connected by spirit," Van said. "There are no words for it."In recent interviews, the Evers children talked of dealing with their father's death differently.

"It's my father that got taken away," said Reena Evers Everett, who works for an airline. "We all had a special relationship with Daddy. You never get over losing a parent."

Small remembrances are a part of it. Reena named her eldest son Daniel Medgar Evers Everett.

"It was supposed to be my (first) name," he said. "My mother switched it to Darrell before it became official."

But coping with the loss and the accompanying expectations are a significantly larger part.

As the oldest, there were many who expected Darrell, now 40, to jump into his father's shoes and take up the fight. Many, including family members, say he even looks like his father.

However, the days immediately following the shooting revealed a great deal to Darrell, who is a conceptual artist and a computer consultant at the Time Warner Interactive Group.

"As I was going out (of our house), I saw my father lying down in the driveway in a pool of blood," he said. "I had a deep spiritual experience. I felt a power of soul like I had never felt before . . . it was undeniable. At that point, I knew my father wasn't that body that everybody recognized as Medgar Evers. He was something else that was much bigger.

Series Select Switch

In this Instructable, I will explain how to use a simple double pole, double throw (DPDT) switch to select series or parallel wiring for two loads on one power source. Wiring two loads in series will provide the full current available to both loads but only half of the available voltage, whereas, wiring the two loads in parallel will provide each load with the full available voltage, but only half of the available current. Using this switch can effectively allow you to choose two power settings for your two sources. In the case of light bulbs, this can give you a bright or dim setting, without needing two different wattage bulbs. This uses the simplest Double Pole Double Throw switch. This requires nothing more than the switch and some creative wiring. Please note that the "off" position only works if you have a "center off" switch! A DPDT relay can easily be substituted if you have one. If you want a 'struct' on this, leave me comments. Please note that this instructable is intended to go with another of my instructables. if you purchase one, you have more options as there are many out there. Both are most often DPDT switches. Don't forget to steal the motors or sometimes linear actuators imitation van cleef onyx necklace out of the seat adjusters, if you can!!!!Broken stereos commonly have one or two switches in themIf you salvage a switch, the first thing I would do is test ACROSS the switch to be sure it is double pole. The switch has two rows of contacts with three pins per row. NO pin in one row should have continuity to ANY pin in the OTHER row. Imagine that the pins are numbered as below:1 42 53 6Begin by connecting pins 3 and 6 directly. The shortest piece of wire you can use will be best. These pins will be your two power supply wires, as well as one wire from EACH of your motors. As this switch WILL NOT change polarities, make sure that your positive wire from one motor (we will call this one Motor "A") is connected to the positive power source wire, and pin 1. You now should have only 2 free wires, one from each motor. These wires will get crossed in this step. This is intentional. Connect the wire from Motor "A" to pin 5, (not 2, like you would expect). You CANNOT connect your power source to pins 2 and 5 in this switch. The motors will be wired in series in one position, however the switch will cause a short in the other position.

Step 3: Enjoy, and Leave Me Comments

I hope you have enjoyed, and gotten something useful out of reading my first Instructable. Please leave comments if there was anything that was unclear or anything I should change as I will not know unless you tell me. Flames or non constructive criticism WILL BE DELETED (if I have that option.

I got on motor and 2x 18v batteries and 1 motor, in one setting I would like it to string the two together and make 36v and in the other I would like them to string together and make 18v. Is this possible?

Sorry 1 motor (writing this on a phone)love thw first page on identifying switches.

Is there any way to do this with transistors rather than a mechanical switch?

I like it!

I going to use this for my heated seat pads. Low/Off/High. Thanks!

would it be possible to do the exact opposite with 2 sources and 1 motor? Just swap each of the motors with a Battery and vise versa? I have 2 6s batteries to power a motor, and want to be able to run the two in series or Parallel.

like one of the cooment bellow, i too need to use 3 batteries but 4P2T seems too scary for me but i hope someone can help me out with an alternative for my requirement. using DPDT (on on on) switch, how do i wire up to achieve the following positions (P) for batteries connected in parallel: P1 > 1 battery, P2 > 2 batteries, P3 > 3 batteries. so far i only have the image below to refer to and i hope someone here can show me how. thank you

I have a project where I will have (80) 3,2VDC 90 AH Life YPO4 cells that I would like to set up to be in one of two configurations.

The first configuration would be 2 parallel strings of 40 cells each for 128 Volts and 180 Ah (23 kWh) of capacity.

The second configuration would be 5 parallel strings of 16 cells each for 51 Volts and (5x90=450) Ah (23 kWH) of capacity.

Maximum load will be 16 kW at 120 VDC (130 Amps) for config. 1

Maximum load will be 12 kW at 48VDC (250 Amps) for config. 2

I would love any thoughts you have on this scenario.

No I just hook the charger up when it time to charge.

Hey Mike,

Not sure if imitation van cleef red clover necklace you still commenting on this really AWESOME instructable, but I am having a problem. I saw your instructable and I was really excited to trick out my son jeep hurricane power wheel. I added two 12v12Ah batteries and wanted the option of running the batteries in parallel and series so they could run it for awhile or tear it up at 24v. I bought a bandc marine dpdt switch and wired everything as you described (swapping batteries for motors in your diagram) and the 12v works but can get the 24v to work. The question I have is I regards to your diagram, everything works in the 1 4 or position, but in the 3 6 or position the switch doesn work. The switch has a 7th pin, so maybe that has something to do with it. Please help!

Agreed! I am wanting to do the same thing with my sons jeep hurricane. I have one other question though. Would it be possible to do this setup and be able to charge the batteries in parallel copy van cleef and arpels sweet alhambra necklace with a 12v battery tender hooked up? Kubert007, how do you charge your power wheels battery? Thanks in advance

Hi Anthony,

That exactly what I do. I switch it to parallel and hook my shumacher charger up. Keep in mind that it will take twice as long but when charging in parallel. However the shumacher is way better than the PW charger and will shut off when full.

Cool, do you hook up the charger with the clamps onto the terminals or do you have it hardwired? I would like to have it hardwired if possible

Riot police arrest

Police replica van cleef and arpels butterfly ring maintained replica van cleef and arpels ring price a heavy presence around downtown Oakland into the morning. Streets were closed off by police barricades, and at least two helicopters were in the air shining lights down. Dozens of officers were in the streets.

A small group of people near the plaza were seen dragging police barricades into the street as police stood nearby.

But the city later warned the protesters that they were breaking the law and could not stay in the encampment overnight. They cited concerns about rats, fire hazards, public urination and acts of violence at the site.

"Many Oaklanders support the goals of the national Occupy Wall Street movement," Mayor Jean Quan said in a statement on Tuesday. "However, over the last week it was apparent that neither the demonstrators nor the City could maintain safe or sanitary conditions or control the ongoing vandalism."

Online: For arrested Occupiers, there's an app for that.

Occupy Wall Street protesters now have access to a free app to alert others if they're about to be hauled off. Users simply write a text message in advance and program a list of recipients. As they're about to be arrested, users can hit one button and replica van cleef & arpels ring alert everyone on their list.

The "I'm Getting Arrested" app (available at Android Market) was developed by Jason Van Anden, a Brooklyn software developer. He is working to make it available on iPhone.

The Daily News reports that as of Monday morning, 9,000 people had installed it. Van Anden says he doesn't know if anyone used it because he installed privacy controls.

The 5 Most Amazing Things Accomplished While in Prison

Prison. The Big House. Ol' Shower Buggeryville. Whatever name you know it by, it's the same thing a place where we put criminals who aren't rich or famous. And sometimes innocent people who just get railroaded. And a disproportionate number of minorities. Ha ha, political humor!Anyway, the basic idea behind a prison is to remove a nogoodnik from society for a while. Thing is, sometimes those nogoodniks manage to find a way to be successful even when they're behind bars. So successful, in fact, that it'll inspire you to rage and depression filled panic shits and cause you to make frustrated cries of "cockholes!" to the heavens when you see the kind of stuff some dudes are doing from the clink. Then beer, the Internet, cool cars, Xbox, microwave dinners, the circus, and so on. Somewhere on the list are boner pills. I imagine they'll rank higher on my list when I'm old and busted and weeping into my pubic thatch as I punch the little one eyed runt in an effort to make him respond.Knowing how important boner pills are to a large segment of society, Martin Hickman decided he'd dabble in dong turgidity and set up websites to sell Viagra and various knockoffs of the drug. Now technically you can't do that just on a whim there are laws in place that prevent just anyone from being a pharmacy but Martin was the kind of go getter who doesn't let legalities or responsibility or the health and welfare of others interfere with his plans.Hickman was arrested for his nefarious deeds, selling not just Viagra without a prescription but cheaper, unregulated knockoffs from abroad like Kamegra, Lovegra, and, I like to think, HalfChubegra. These pills claim to be the same as Viagra and generally come from India, but let's be honest: They're probably 50 percent Mumbai street trash and 50 percent hobo skin."They offered me a bottle of Scotch to turn my gonads into Lipitor. So long, everyone!"After being imprisoned and also fined for ignoring previous orders to stop selling drugs online, Hickman did what any reasonable entrepreneur would do when put behind bars: He kept making money. His local paper ordered some pills from his website and received them a few days later, all while Hickman was in prison, demonstrating that perhaps the police in his neck of the woods are unsure just how this whole Internet thing works.Since that first arrest, Hickman was jailed again for a longer period, for the same crime, and assets of over $21 million were seized. You see strangers having sex on camera, you see documentaries on HBO that invariably end with a crying 19 year old girl yelling at her mom on the phone, you see Ron Jeremy naked, and you think, "Yes, this is for me." And there's nothing wrong with that if you're not emotionally scarred by it and you're having fun. I bet there's a few porn stars out there who really enjoy what they do. I'd like to meet them and go out for some beers some time.In prison, any dreams you have of starring in porno are probably nightmares, and the plotlines are all predictable and terrifying and don't take your feelings into consideration at all. Usually. prison HMP Rye Hill alhambra earrings fake subcontracts to fake van cleef lotus earrings another company to hire educators. That company brought in 59 year old British cougar (which I guess is a bobcat? I'm not sure) Beverley Van de Velde to teach prisoners. And teach she did. Media studies. van cleef flower earrings fake Remember that woman who married Richard Ramirez? What the hell was that about? Ted Bundy got married in jail, too, and that dude who dressed like a clown and had a crawl space full of bodies. Ladies, you can do better. A good dating tip is, if he's a notorious serial killer, he's just not that into you.Now of course this story comes to us courtesy of the Daily Mail, which means it's potentially as true as a genie in a lamp granting me a bottomless beer fridge and some sweet new T shirts, but the part about Richard Francis stabbing a man in Croydon in 2002 checked out, so it seems like it would be a bizarre twist for a tabloid paper to research what, at the time, was an eight year old murder and use it as a small detail in a story about prison porn. I'm going out on a limb and believing that this beautifully awful story is the real deal. Also please never ask me to spice up your Christmas party because that shit was a lie, I forget how to play the oboe. However, other people are much more committed to music than I and have even gone so far as to pursue their love behind bars.Traditionally, prison music is a symphony of harmonicas and desperate sobs, but in recent years recording artists have found themselves incarcerated and still desirous of recording their latest hit single. What to do? Turns out it's not even uncommon for musicians, typically rappers (though I really hope one or two folk albums have been done this way), to record an album via prison phone. When I first heard of this, it was literally one artist doing it, and I thought, "Well isn't that novel," and then I found an article that listed 11 songs that were recorded by artists who were locked up, including Tony Yayo. Most people can't figure out how he's allowed to record music when he's free, let alone when he's in jail. Remember that when people ask why your garage band doesn't have an album out yet you just need to rob some banks and get locked up, then call a guy with a recording studio. The idea of a crime boss still running the show behind bars is not new. It's so well known, you could consider it a trope at this point it's been done on TV and in movies and probably one or two really snazzy off Broadway shows that feature original music and the acting talents of Willie Aames. But running an empire within the prison, with the help of prison officials, including forming literal families, well that's something new altogether. At the Baltimore City Detention Center, Tavon White managed to run a drug empire within the walls, making over $15,000 a month in the prison itself with the help of an army of loyal prison guards. How loyal were the guards? He impregnated four of them. I can't even get co workers to pick up lunch for me when I offer to pay for it. A total of 13 guards were indicted, and it's rumored that even more were helping out, because what's the fun in just making sure inmates get regular meals and don't kill each other when you can get their names tattooed on your neck and buy new cars with the money you get from them for smuggling in Percocet? Most of the ladies involved have claimed their innocence, apparently unaware of all the taped phone conversations that indicate they're the exact opposite of innocent, but the best lies are the ones that you cling to like a desperate little koala, hoping against hope that your idiot lie doesn't fall right out of that fabricated eucalyptus tree and bash your skull on every branch of mistruth and bullshittery on the way down.White apparently was allowed to continue his criminal activities thanks to an informal deal whereby he'd keep gang violence to a minimum if everyone turned a blind eye to contraband smuggling, which is also known as the old "I'll stop one kind of crime if you let me commit another kind of crime" maneuver, which you'd think wouldn't work in an actual prison since, you know, it's prison, but here we are.

Smart cities need smart cars

Automotive technology is evolving so fast copy van cleef and arpels clover necklace these days that it's difficult to predict the features vehicles will have by the end of the next decade. But van cleef replica necklace we do know that wireless connectivity will play a much more important role than it does now, primarily offering passengers an internet connection and GPS navigation. Whether it's the cars we drive or cars that drive us, these vehicles will be much more aware of their surroundings than today's most technologically tricked out Tesla or high end Mercedes Benz.

This next exciting wave of automotive technology was recently exhibited in a boring used minivan driven by Faroog Ibrahim, executive director of advanced driver assistance systems at Savari, one of a growing number of Silicon Valley based automotive focused companies and startups.

During the exhibition in Las Vegas at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in January, the van retrofitted with Savari hardware communicated with a transmitter attached to a stoplight in the distance. From a tablet inside the vehicle, Ibrahim could see how many seconds were left before the light would change. The wireless sensor also detected a mobile phone signal of a company engineer who pretended to be an inattentive pedestrian, and the tablet lit up to warn Ibrahim of a potential collision.

Today many cars use radar for collision avoidance, and self driving cars rely on cameras, radars and lidars (highly replica alhambra necklace van cleef precise light based sensors) to navigate their routes. But this small demonstration in Las Vegas showed the power that wireless technology has to provide vehicles with yet another set of "eyes" that can detect objects much further away even if they're blocked from view. This technology can help drivers andself driving cars to not only avoid collisions but also send and receive all kinds of data to help smooth the flow of traffic and conserve fuel.

This wireless vehicle to everything communication, known in shorthand as V2X, will become more widely adopted as urban developers from Singapore to New York City install more "smart city" transmitters into infrastructure, such as toll booths, street lights and road signs. Savari recently established a partnership with SAIC Motors, China's largest automaker, to sell their technology in Asia's increasingly crowded cities. If the standard is applied, it would speed up the number of cars on the road equipped with the technology that could support V2X.

Salon spoke recently to Savari's co founder and CEO Ravi Puvvala about the role V2X communication will play in the future of mobility.

How does V2X technology work?

There are a lot of sensors being integrated into cars, like cameras and radars. The automotive industry has been looking at using Wi Fi and cellular radio technology as another sensor. V2X is the use of radio technology in cars for the purposes of active safety. It can communicate with anything around it.

Today's cars, just like cell phones, have Wi Fi and cellular radios. But traditionally they have been used to enable connectivity. If you want a hot spot in the car you use the Wi Fi or the cellular radio. These can also be used for crash avoidance.

Among the limitations of the camera and radar sensors is that they rely on line of sight. Take for example at an intersection:These camera and radar sensors need to see the car before they can predict the possibility of an accident. But when you use Wi Fi or cellular radio to communicate between two connected cars from around a corner, for example, they are able to get enough information about each car's position and route ahead of time to avoid collision.

It sounds like the cars with these transmitters have kind of "X ray vision," able to sense each other's presence through a building or other visual obstruction.

Correct. Think of how cellular phones work. You receive the wireless signal in and through buildings. The other sensors must have line of sight. That's where V2X technology is useful. It fills a need in situations where the other sensors don't work. Another advantage V2X has over other sensors is range. Cellular and Wi Fi radios have a much larger range, allowing them to send and receive data much further ahead of time. The other sensors have a range of about 15 meters [about 50 feet] to 75 meters [about 250 feet].

The term "Vehicle to Everything" suggests that we're not just talking about a way for cars to "talk" to each other.

Correct. For example, one of the difficulties that autonomous cars have is looking at traffic lights. Depending on the weather conditions, the cameras can have a hard time reading the traffic signal. But if you are able to have this traffic light "talk" to the car, that gives you better information than what a camera can perceive and tell you.

The traffic light is also better able to control traffic, and the car's speed can be precisely controlled to the timing of the traffic lights. We've calculated that you can get up to 18 percent fuel savings by having this vast connected infrastructure of traffic lights because they can deliver optimal speed advisories [transmitting data to optimize speed in order to reduce idling, which wastes fuel].

Likewise we have mechanisms today that can identify where road construction is happening [through GPS], but there's no good way to determine in real time how long a traffic delay will be as you travel through a construction zone. Having connected infrastructure makes our roadways smart, optimizing traffic flow and reducing fuel consumption.

Much of the discussion around "smart" cities has to do with the flow of traffic. How do we eliminate traffic congestion and accidents in densely populated areas?

We want all of the cars in the city to have what we call 360 degree awareness. We are trying to equip the cars with more information about the driving environment and the ability to remember the information to make smarter decisions. This is why I use the term "automated infrastructure." You could see this as the difference between an autonomous car and an automated vehicle. The autonomous car makes all decisions locally while an "automated vehicle" is a car that is interacting with everything around it in real time and it's making smarter decisions because it's connected to a larger network.

The Dangers of Running an Obstacle Race

When you take a look at the ads for obstacle races like Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash or Spartan Race, the challenge to your mental and physical toughness is apparent. you van cleef necklace knock off really strong enough to take on this race? they seem to ask. And for most red blooded Americans, the gut instinct is to answer, yeah! But not so fast. In recent years there been a huge surge in the popularity of obstacle races and endurance challenges. And if your Facebook newsfeed is to be believed, it seems like there one every weekend. Anything that gets people outside and exercising can be good, but there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration, especially for those new to training. These races truly aren for the faint of heart (especially if there something medically wrong with your heart), so training for them needs to be taken seriously. Before you sign up for an obstacle race, be aware of the risks you taking and how to train properly.A study from 2003 closely examined five cases of injuries sustained while running in a Tough Mudder race in Pennsylvania that same year. A common feature of the Tough Mudder races are the electrified obstacles in which participants face electric shocks from wires running through or hanging over the obstacles. Four out of the five cases analyzed in this study resulted from electric shocks. The consequences of these types of obstacles included headaches, altered mental status, possible seizure activity, speech difficulty, confusion, inability to move one side of the body, loss of consciousness (and associated fall injuries), anxiety and loss of bladder control. Fortunately, all of these patients were discharged from the hospital within four days of admission. There have also been instances of severe injuries and even death at such obstacle races. In April 2012, Avishek Sengupta died while taking part in a Tough Mudder event in West Virginia during a plunge pool obstacle that requires participants to jump into cold water from a platform 15 feet above the pool. This incident was ruled an accident, but it clear that such obstacle races are not without risks. All obstacle races, by design, contain inherent risks. It this element of danger that attracts seasoned competitors and weekend warriors alike. Injuries like minor burns, bruises and cuts are commonplace from climbing over obstacles, swinging on ropes and running or jumping through fire. But there are also less obvious risks: In particular, electrified obstacles and submersion based obstacles are much harder for organizers to control because previously unknown health issues can sometimes be exposed by them. And who knows what lurking below the surface of that muddy water imitation van cleef necklace so many races feature. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during an October 2012 long distance obstacle race, there was an outbreak of campylobacteriosis affecting 22 people who inadvertently swallowed muddy water.is one of the most common causes of diarrheal illness in the United States. Most persons who become ill with campylobacteriosis get diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain and fever within two to five days after exposure to the organism. The diarrhea can be bloody and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The illness typically lasts about one week, says the CDC.Prevent Common Running InjuriesAside from the obvious risks in obstacle races of running through fire, being submerged in ice cold water and climbing obstacles high above the ground, there are a number of more prevalent risks to the endurance competitor, whether an ill prepared newcomer or a seasoned competitor. The annual injury rate for runners ranges between 37 to 56 percent, depending on the group (competitive athletes, joggers or children). This means that nearly half of all runners will experience an injury each year. running injuries are lower extremity injuries, with a predominance for the knee, says Willem van Mechelen, professor of occupational and sports medicine at the University of Amsterdam. 50 to 75 percent of all running injuries appear to be overuse injuries due to the constant repetition of the same movement. These injuries are usually systemic rather than the result of any one particular event or action. Systemic injuries are often caused by things like the individual physiology, muscular imbalances, warm up routine (or lack thereof), mobility, stability, running pattern, shoe type and running surface. Getting assessed is a great way to minimize the risk of these systemic injuries, as it will help identify potential causes of injury that can be addressed ahead of time.In preparing for an adventure race, it always best to seek out an assessment of your movement from your doctor, an orthopedist, physical therapist or running coach before you start to train. If you have dysfunctional movement, the last thing you want is to perform thousands of repetitions of the same dysfunctional patterns, because they can contribute to the injuries and conditions mentioned above. This can be further compounded if your race or event requires you to compete and train while bearing a load (like in a GoRuck Challenge). The change in your body positioning to accommodate the load and increased ground reaction forces make it even more important to ensure you are assessed and moving well ahead of time.Properly Structure Your TrainingAnother contributing factor to these injuries is the individual inability to adapt to a sudden increase in training volume. This is common amongst sedentary people with little to no idea of how to build a safe and sane training program who suddenly decide to take part fake van cleef necklace in an adventure challenge or endurance race. While it can be a great motivator to kick start your training, it important to train progressively.Your ability to adapt to and recover from training stimulus is affected by many factors, some of which are predetermined by genetics and others that can be controlled through nutrition, sleep and hydration.Within any training program there are a number of factors that need to be carefully managed and manipulated to ensure the successful adaptation of the athlete. These fall into four categories: type (how you train), frequency(how often you train), intensity (how hard you train) and duration (how long you train). Not allowing your body the time to adapt to any one of these factors (or trying to change too many of them at once) leads to some significant physiological and psychological effects that can negatively affect your performance and overall health. The main problem with this failure to adapt to training is that it can be a vicious cycle for those caught in it. And without an objective outsider (such as a coach) it hard to tell that it happening and even harder to correct. Ultimately, if left uncorrected, the situation worsens and can lead to burnout, overtraining and loss of motivation.Train Smarter, Not HarderIt important to remember that training more isn always better. The perception that training harder or increasing volume will bring a more optimal performance is misleading.Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the endurance community, where the miles you run/bike/swim are often used as indicators of how hard you training, with little consideration given to movement patterns and whether they are potentially causing or magnifying dysfunction that could lead to injury.Knowing when to go hard and when to dial back the intensity using pacing is something every athlete needs to master to be successful. While this takes time and practice, learning how to run your engine is one of the most valuable skills you can possess as an athlete, regardless of your chosen sport. In order to optimize your athletic performance and health over the long term, it key to approach your training in a holistic manner that integrates recovery, nutrition, hydration, mindset, program design, movement analysis and, of course, your individual goals. If you not sure how to build a program like that for yourself, seek out the help of a certified personal trainer with experience in building training programs for people who participate in obstacle races or endurance challenges. As fun and exhilarating as obstacle races are, with their high adrenaline and camaraderie, it important to always dynamically assess each obstacle from a safety and heath perspective. Does the benefit and sense of achievement from passing an obstacle outweigh the risk you face by attempting it? In many cases, it doesn But if you are aware of the risks, take the time to train properly and choose a race that is safe for your individualized physiology and medical history, competing in an obstacle race or endurance challenge can be a rewarding experience.

Terry Wogan's BBC Radio 2 successor Chris Evans tells of his disbelief at death of his 'radio dad'

Chris Evans Sir Terry Wogan's successor on the Radio vca sweet alhambra bracelet copy 2 breakfast show today paid tribute to his 'radio dad' in an emotional broadcast which had listeners around the country in tears.

Sir Terry, known for his velvety voice and easy charm on Wake Up To Wogan and Weekend Wogan, died surrounded by his family yesterday after 'a short but brave battle with cancer'.

He added: 'What a man. What a giant of broadcasting. Truly, there have been and will be few like him. One of the all time greats right up there with the bug guns, the BBC hall of famers.

'He was radio's Eric Morecambe, Ronnie Barker. He was our Captain Mainwaring, our Basil Fawlty, but he made us laugh every day for two hours, and for over 30 years.

'All unscripted, all ad lib, and always supremely assured. Unwaveringly confident. And do you know why? Because he never took any of this seriously. Least of all himself.'

Earlier, as he entered the studio ahead of his show, Evans said Sir Terry was fake van cleef bracelet uk his 'radio dad', adding: 'He taught me so much about being on the radio and not being on the radio. He was the absolute governor, everybody knows that.'

Evans struggled to hold back the emotion as he spoke to Father Brian D'Arcy, the priest and friend of Sir Terry's who saw him shortly before his death.

Father Brian said: 'I thought things were going to be alright. I was a little worried when he wasn't able to turn up for Children in Need, which was his great passion for 25 years.'

Father Brian added: 'I phoned him and he said "everything's going to be alright old boy, you might want to say a few prayers if you have any influence up there, if there is anyone up there", he used to go on with this atheism.

'Then after Christmas, it seemed to change a little bit. It seemed more serious and the first opportunity that I was able to get over I came over.

'I wasn't sure how it was going to be but as soon as I saw Terry I knew it was the last time I was going to see him and the shake hands was the last shake hands with him.

'It was a beautiful day, a day I'll never forget, a sad day, because it was the end of a beautiful friendship.'

The priest's voice broke with emotion and an obviously moved Evans played another song.

Prominent members of Sir Terry's BBC Radio 2 fan club, which he dubbed Terry's Old Geezers and Gals (TOGS), have also praised his work this morning.

Norman Macintosh, who organises the TOGS conventions and met Sir Terry multiple times, told BBC Breakfast: 'He was the gentleman and the ultimate broadcaster.

Mr Macintosh and his wife Lesley organised the TOGS Celebrity Calendar to raise around 100,000 a year for Children in Need, and they have pledged to continue fundraising in his name.

service gas was banned in NJ

It began with this observation: "The Garden State self service gas station ban dates back to 1949, when the New Jersey Legislature passed the Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act, primarily over concerns about the safety of consumers pumping petroleum themselves."

Well, that's the cover story the legislators gave at the time. What they were really up to is a lot more devious and corrupt as all get out.

I first started studying this issue back in 2000, during the Whitman administration. Back then it wasn't easy to do van cleef bracelet uk copy research on the internet. That meant I had to go to the morgue.

No, not the one where they keep dead bodies. I'm talking about the morgue in the basement of the Star Ledger building. In the newspaper racket, a "morgue" is what we call our library of past clippings.

It was there that I dug up the story of Irving Reingold. Here is how I recounted it in a column back then:

"It was Irving Reingold who created the crisis that led to the law banning self serve gasoline. Reingold, a workaholic who took time out only to fly his collection of World War II fighter planes, started the crisis by doing something gas station owners hated: He lowered prices. Fifty one years ago, gas was selling at 21.9 cents a gallon. The price was rigged by a gentlemen's agreement among gas station owners.

"Reingold decided to offer the consumer a choice by opening up a 24 pump gas station on Route 17 in Hackensack. He offered gas at 18.9 cents a gallon. The only requirement was that drivers pump it themselves. They didn't mind. They lined up for blocks.

"The other gas station operators didn't like the competition. Someone tried shooting up Reingold's station. But he installed bulletproof glass, so the retailers looked for a softer target the Statehouse. The Gasoline Retailers Association prevailed upon its pals in the Legislature to push through a bill banning self serve gas. The pretext was safety, but the Hackensack fire chief had already told all who would listen that Rein gold's operation was perfectly safe.

"The bill sailed through in record time, despite the objections of everyone who cared about the public interest. Journalists howled. "Chalk up another victory for the organized pressure groups," said WOR radio commentator Lyle Van.

"Prices went back up. Reingold got out of gas and moved on to other endeavors, such as revolutionizing the sport fishing business in Florida with boats that were bigger and more luxurious than anyone had seen.

"He died two years ago. His daughter Roni told me that on his deathbed he was still angry about the way the politicians ran him out of business. It's amazing that New Jersey consumers could still be suffering in the Internet era from a crooked deal that went through in the pre television era."

And that, boys and girls, is how we got the ban on self service gas that exists to this day. It's also why we can't get rid of it. Then as now, our Legislature is up for sale to the highest bidder.

The public welfare had nothing to do with it. That's also true of another crooked deal that went through the Legislature in the 1940s. The liquor lobby prevailed upon the politicians they had purchased to enact a statute that prevents towns from creating new licenses. That of course greatly increased the value of the existing licenses, enriching the owners at the expense of the consumers.

But who cares? Not our legislators. They're bought and paid for by the liquor lobby as well as the gas station owners.

(The video below covers one set of objections to self service gas: Some people can't figure out how to work a gas pump. But at least those people are pleasing aesthetically if not intellectually. Incidentally, even if self serve were legalized, stations would still offer full serve for those who want it.)

Every time this issue comes up, we hear all sorts of screwy theories from economic illiterates who insist against all logic that full serve gas is cheaper than self serve.

In a 2006 column, I stated that the main reason our gas price is lower than neighboring states is that "we have one of the lowest gas taxes in the country." That didn't stop me from getting a flood of e mails like these two, from people van cleef lucky alhambra bracelet imitation who think full service gas saves them money:

"Mr. I drove to Florida many times and found the price of gas higher than New Jersey at self service."

In less time than it took to send an e mail, those two and others like them could have gone on Google and found out that Florida drivers pay about 15 cents more per gallon than we van cleef magic alhambra bracelet knock off do. If ignorance is bliss, then these guys will never need Prozac. We also have lots of oil refineries. Even more important, New Jersey is the No. 1 importer of gasoline.

And the Jersey driver gets first crack at those imports. That and the low taxes are what keeps our gas cheap.

And a move to self service gas would make it even cheaper. That will be even more obvious in the very near future. The state minimum wage just increased. And next year the Obamacare employer mandate kicks in.

Seniors care home opens in Sidney with one client

The new administrator of a Sidney care home that fell victim to an investment debacle in 2009 and never opened said he would occupy the building one client at a time if he must.

That first client moved in to Sidney All Care Residence on Friday and it's possible another will move in this weekend, Blake Mooney said.

The facility was constructed with the expectation that a private operator would move in and run publicly funded seniors' care beds that would in turn pay for the 41,300 square foot complex's elaborate church. The complex also includes a multipurpose centre and the Positive Path Early Learning childcare centre, which is in operation.

But the care home never opened causing about 100 investors to lose millions of dollars. Supreme Court in September 2011; a trial is set for the fall.

Mooney, a registered nurse with a master's degree in public health, and investor Cornelis Johannes Van Dongen of Kamloops purchased the complex in July 2012 for $11.2 million, van cleef sweet alhambra necklace fake less than half what was asked $23 million two years earlier. A registered nurse and residential care aide will be on site 24 hours a day.

Now, the administrator is working to occupy the renovated third floor of the 88 bed facility with residents paying their own way although All Care Canada, the company that operates the Sidney facility, hopes to attract publicly funded beds.

VIHA must replace about 320 seniors care beds at Oak Bay Lodge in Oak Bay and Mount Tolmie Hospital in Saanich.

A variance permit for the redevelopment of Oak Bay Lodge was denied last year, and VIHA has been looking at options to replace the beds since then, said VIHA spokeswoman Sarah Plank.

The request for proposals was expected to be issued by mid April, but is now not expected until knock off van cleef & arpels necklace alhambra well after the election.

"We have been working on alternative options that will ensure seniors have access to modern, high quality care," Plank said van cleef small necklace copy in an email.

"We are currently looking at all of our options and this process is still underway. We are taking the time we need to ensure we best serve the needs of our seniors and we will provide an update as soon as we have one."

Mooney, a former VIHA residential care home manager, called the wait "very disappointing" and predicted that the request for proposals won't be issued for another six to 12 months.
