The flavoring liquid for Electronic Cigarettes Wholesale, or e-cigarettes, may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease when inhaled, according to a study led by researchers at the School of Medicine.

The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels. They found that, when grown in a laboratory, endothelial cells exposed to the e-liquids — or to blood collected from e-cigarette users shortly after vaping — are less viable and exhibit significantly increased levels of molecules implicated in DNA damage and cell death. The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing.

“Until now, we had no data about how these e-liquids affect human endothelial cells,” said Joseph Wu, MD, PhD, director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and professor of cardiovascular medicine and of radiology. “This study clearly shows that e-cigarettes are not a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. When we exposed the cells to six different flavors of e-liquid with varying levels of nicotine, we saw significant damage. The cells were less viable in culture, and they began to exhibit multiple symptoms of dysfunction.”

The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. Human iPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient.

This study was the first to use endothelial cells derived from iPS cells to directly investigate the effect of e-liquids with and without nicotine on their viability and function.

A paper describing the findings was published online May 27 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Wu is the senior author. Former postdoctoral scholars Won Hee Lee, PhD, now an assistant professor at the University of Arizona, and Sang-Ging Ong, PhD, now an assistant professor at University of Illinois-Chicago, are the lead authors.

But cigarette smoking doesn't just cause lung cancer. It's a leading cause of heart attacks, too, and little is known about e-cigarettes and heart disease. Chemicals in the inhaled vapor may pose unique risks that are important to understand, especially as more and more teens take up vaping.

"It's not possible for me to go into a patient and strip their artery and test it" for a reaction to vaping, said Dr. Joseph Wu, director of Stanford University's cardiovascular institute.

So his team tried the next best thing for a study published Monday: In laboratory dishes, they grew cells that normally line healthy human blood vessels. They exposed the cells to six different e-cigarette flavorings, testing if the flavors — and not just the nicotine — caused any effects.

They also tracked what happened when those cells were bathed in blood taken from people right after they had an e-cigarette, the way chemicals from vaping would make their way to the cardiovascular system. They also compared the cells' exposure to blood from nonsmokers and people who smoked a regular cigarette.

Vaping and some flavorings, even without nicotine, triggered blood vessel dysfunction that can increase the risk of heart disease, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.Cinnamon and menthol seemed the most toxic. But overall, cells showed signs of damage and were inflamed, less able to form new blood vessels or heal wounds.

Small laboratory studies like this one can't prove vaping really does harm, cautioned Dr. Jane Freedman of the University of Massachusetts, who wasn't involved in the research. But she said the work should spark additional safety testing.

The findings "suggest that even without the smoke of combustible cigarette products, there may be a smoldering fire of adverse health effects," she wrote in an accompanying editorial.

With the help of her mom, 8-month-old Sadie Rose Stroud was the first female to cross the finish at the Vintage Park Half Marathon in Houston on April 14. Stroud took more than five minutes off the previous official Guinness record of 1:27:34 held by Lindsy James of the United Kingdom. Julia Webb beat this time at the 2016 Rock ’n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon with a 1:22:57, but this record appears to have never been ratified by Guinness. To make the victory all the more dominating, Stroud won the women’s division of the race by nearly six minutes, averaging a 6:18-mile pace.
Stroud said she has submitted her result, photos, and other information to Guinness and is waiting for confirmation on her record.

Stroud said Sadie slept through more than half of the race and stayed mostly relaxed, only getting a bit fussy toward the end. Although Stroud and her fellow racers got lucky with a sunny, 48-degree morning, they dealt with some strong winds throughout and down the final stretch of the race, which definitely posed a challenge.

“I knew I had some room to play with, because miles 1 through 10 were all between running 6:05 and 6:15 pace, and I knew the course might be a little bit longer than 13.1 miles for it to be certified, so I was trying to keep the pace better than the 6:20 average I needed to run to beat (Webb’s unofficial record),” Stroud told Runner’s World. “We slowed down drastically in miles 11 and 12 because of the wind, and while I wasn’t too worried about it, I was trying to do the math in my head to make sure I still had the record within reach.”
Stroud, 28, whose half PR is 1:14:52, lives and trains in Lake Jackson, a suburb of Houston, and works full-time in nearby Angleton as the fitness coordinator in the town’s recreation center. She typically runs about six miles during her lunch break and goes for a shorter second run after work in the evenings, logging about 50 to 65 miles total per week. Stroud first got the idea to chase the record after starting to run with the stroller when Sadie was 3 months old. Since then, she’s been running more than half of her weekly mileage with Sadie in their Thule Glide stroller, getting up to 13 miles for their longest run together before the race.

Before I signed up for the race, I wanted to make sure we could comfortably cover the distance without her fussing,” Stroud said. “But she actually never fusses when we run together; in fact, she only fusses when she doesn’t get to join me.”

Stroud joins the ranks of fellow Houston-area elite Calum Neff, who currently holds the men’s world records for pushing a stroller in both a half and full marathon.

With Sadie—now weighing about 13 pounds—set up in the stroller, that meant Stroud kept her blistering pace while pushing about 50 pounds. “In addition to Houston generally being a great place to run, we’re lucky to have a lot of flat terrain to train on, and it’s great that a lot of races here let you participate with strollers,” she said.

Like Neff, Stroud is also no stranger to the Houston-area running scene, as she lines up at local races at least twice a month. She continued to do so throughout her pregnancy, winning one half marathon—the Surfside Beach Half Marathon at 16 weeks pregnant—and four 5Ks before giving birth last August. She has also won 16 races and counting since Sadie was born. The half marathon wasn’t their first race together, either; Stroud and Sadie also ran and won the Angleton Project Grad 5K in 18:20 three weeks earlier on March 23.

About 110 million years ago, a sparrow-sized bird died with her egg still inside her body. That egg, crushed and flattened by pressure over time, is the first unlaid bird egg known to be preserved in a fossil, researchers report March 20 in Nature Communications. The fossil was unearthed 11 years ago in northwestern China. In 2018, paleontologists led by Alida Bailleul of the Key Laboratory of Vertebrate Evolution and Human Origins in Beijing took a closer look, and noticed something odd: The bird had a strange sheet of tissue between her pubic bones. Examining a piece of the tissue under a microscope, Bailleul found that it was from an egg.

The bird, a newly identified species, was named Avimaia schweitzerae in honor of paleontologist Mary Schweitzer’s work on fossilized soft tissues (SN: 12/24/16, p. 15). Further analyses revealed more surprises. The mother bird’s skeleton contains traces of medullary bone, a calcium-bearing tissue that aids in eggshell formation (SN: 4/16/16, p. 16). It’s the strongest evidence yet that ancient birds produced this tissue during reproduction.

And the egg’s cuticle, the outermost layer of shell, contains tiny mineral spheres similar to spheres in the egg cuticles of modern waterfowl such as quails and ducks. The spheres, thought to protect embryos from microbial infections, have never before been seen in any fossilized eggs.

But all was not well with this bird and her embryo. The eggshell has two layers instead of the usual one, suggesting that the egg had remained too long in the abdomen. And the egg’s layers are extremely thin, thinner than a sheet of paper. In modern birds, particularly small birds experiencing extreme stress, these symptoms can indicate a deadly condition known as egg-binding, in which a bird is unable to lay the egg. In fact, the researchers suggest, the unlaid egg may have ultimately killed the mother.
