How does a solenoid valve work?
A solenoid valve consists of two main components: a solenoid and a valve body (G). Figure 2 shows the components. A solenoid has an electromagnetically inductive coil (A) around an iron core at the center called the plunger (E). At rest, it can be normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC). In the de-energized state, a normally open valve is open and a normally closed valve is closed. When current flows through the solenoid, the coil is energized and creates a magnetic field. This creates a magnetic attraction with the plunger, moving it and overcoming the spring (D) force. If the valve is normally closed, the plunger is lifted so that the seal (F) opens the orifice and allows the flow of the media through the valve. If the valve is normally open, the plunger moves downward so that the seal (F) blocks the orifice and stops the flow of the media through the valve. The shading ring (C) prevents vibration and humming in AC coils.
Solenoid valves are used in a wide range of applications, with high or low pressures and small or large flow rates. These solenoid valves use different operating principles that are optimal for the application. The three most important ones are explained in this article: direct acting, indirect acting, and semi-direct acting operation.
Solenoid valves are used to close, open, dose, distribute or mix the flow of gas or liquid in a pipe. The specific purpose of a solenoid valve is expressed by its circuit function. 2-way solenoid valve
A 2-way solenoid valve has two ports, an inlet and an outlet. Flow direction is critical to ensure proper operation, so there is typically an arrow indicating the flow direction. A 2-way valve is used to open or close the orifice. Figure 3 shows an example of a 2-way solenoid valve.
3-way solenoid valve
A 3-way valve has three connection ports. Typically, it has 2 states (positions) it can be in. So, it switches between two different circuits. A 3-way valve is used to open, close, distribute, or mix media. Figure 4 shows an example of a 3-way solenoid valve.
For a normally closed solenoid valve, the valve is closed when de-energized and the media cannot flow through it. When current is sent to the coil, it creates an electromagnetic field that forces the plunger upwards overcoming the spring force. This unseats the seal and opens the orifice allowing the media the flow through the valve. Figure 5 shows the operating principle of a normally closed solenoid valve in the de-energized and energized states.
Traditional lathes function by holding the work piece firmly at one or both ends. While the part spins, the tools will be brought in and out of contact with the workpiece to cut away material along its entire length. With a Swiss Screw machine the bar of material both spins and slides axially through a guide bushing. The tools are mounted to the face of the guide bushing. Unlike a traditional lathe where the force of the tool is exerted on the part far from where the machine supports it, on the Swiss lathe, the force is right where the material is emerging from the bushing. Because of this ingenious design, the effects on the part from tool force is minimized, allowing for far greater precision work. Assuming parts are of the same size and material, the parts in the Swiss Screw machine will deflect and vibrate less during machining than in a traditional lathe. As parts get smaller, the benefits of the Swiss turning process increase in comparison to the traditional lathe. Typically, Swiss type parts are less than 1 ¼” (32mm) in diameter with the majority being less than ¾” (16 mm) in diameter. In addition, Swiss turning was built around the capability to produce components in very high volumes.
Swiss lathes started as belt driven, mechanically cam controlled machines in the 19th century focused on the production of miniature watch screws. Today, in the 21st century, the latest Swiss lathes are fully CNC operated with a host of additional capabilities such as milling and even laser cutting at their disposal. The parts that they produce can still be found in the movements of fine automatic watches, but are also in hydraulic valves for heavy construction equipment, implants for medical devices, miniature connectors in electronics, and even as posts in musical instruments such as flutes and clarinets. The modern Swiss Screw machine takes the technological breakthrough established over 160 years ago and evolved it to fit the needs of all areas of 21st century manufacturing.

1. Excessive Noise
A car’s exhaust assembly should act as a closed system from the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter to the muffler and tailpipe, where the exhaust finally makes its exit. If a breach occurs at any point along this system, you may hear loud tapping or hissing noises that grow worse as your vehicle accelerates.
Normally you can expect the muffler surrounding the exhaust pipe to dampen unnecessary noises. If the muffler has nothing wrong with it, you may need to have the exhaust pipe checked for cracks or breakage. Exhaust escaping prematurely through these gaps may cause unusual noises.
2. A Loose or Hanging Pipe
An exhaust pipe adheres to the undercarriage of a vehicle via rubber support mounts known as exhaust hangers. If these mounts break, or if the exhaust pipe breaks at some point between two mounts, a section of the exhaust pipe may hang down unusually close to the road. It may even drag along the pavement as you drive.
If your car has developed this problem, you will most likely see the pipe clearly drooping lower than usual from the undercarriage. Even if you haven’t seen any such obvious signs of a loose or hanging pipe, you may hear the pipe scraping along the ground while the vehicle is in motion.
3. Gasoline Odor
A strong smell of unburned gasoline should put any driver on the alert for potential problems. Some causes may involve serious problems such gas tank, injector, or fuel line leaks, while others might prove as benign as a missing gas cap or gasoline tracked into the cabin by your shoes.
A gasoline odor may also come from a damaged exhaust pipe. If the pipe breaks, rusts through, or otherwise springs a leak, gas fumes may drift into the vehicle’s cabin instead of continuing their journey through the muffler to the tailpipe. This problem can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, so get it fixed immediately.
