A fall, a cut, and a scrape or two are statistically unavoidable if you’re doing lots of outdoor activities all summer. They’re pretty minor most of the time, but we’re in Alaska, so it’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit with the essential “must-haves” just in case.
Here is a list of items that make up a well-stocked, basic first aid kit. If you keep this kit handy in your home, car, boat, etc., you’ll be well-prepared for many of the most common emergencies you’d encounter until you can get to a medical facility or help can get to you.

Having seen one of those items used in a real-world setting, I can personally recommend adding them to your essential first aid kit supply list.

Importantly, head and neck injuries are sneaky as they can be invisible but lead to serious problems ranging from mild to severe. It may be “better to be safe than sorry” and seek emergency medical attention with either type of injury.

For musculoskeletal injuries (bone, tendon, muscle), look for problems bearing weight, constant pain, swelling and bruising, a significant bump in the area of the injury or if there is an open wound at the site of the injury, emergency care is also probably warranted.

During the May 14 attack, the accused gunman wore a steel-plated vest, an armor strong enough to stop a handgun round fired by a store security guard who tried to halt the rampage.A law hastily enacted by state lawmakers after the attack restricts sales of vests defined as "bullet-resistant soft body armor."

Soft vests, which are light and can be concealed beneath clothing, can be effective against pistol fire. Vests carrying steel, ceramic or polyethylene plates, which can potentially stop rifle rounds, aren't explicitly covered by the legislation.

That has left some retailers confused about what they can and can't sell — and lawmakers talking about a possible fix.

"I know you said soft vests, but what about hard armor plates, plate carriers, or armors that aren't vests, but clothing that provide protection. Is that also prohibited? It is so vague," said Brad Pedell, who runs 221B Tactical, a tactical gear and body armor store in New York City. He said his store tends to sell more hard-plated armor than the soft type being banned.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is also aware of the need for changes, her office said.

"Governor Hochul was proud to sign the groundbreaking new law passed by the legislature to restrict sales of body armor, and will work with the legislature to expand the definitions in the law at the first available opportunity," it said.

Nationwide, there are few limits on sales of body armor. Before New York's law passed, Connecticut had one of the few restrictions. It only allows people to buy it from dealers in person, not via mail order.

Pedell says many customers at his New York City store buy the armor for their own protection.It's disappointing because residents are just scared, and they come to us because they are scared, and we offer help that makes them feel more confident, that they won't get stabbed or injured or potentially killed," Pedell said. "The fact (lawmakers) are taking that away, for whatever purpose they have in their minds, I find that really sad and unnecessary and morally wrong."

New York's ban is aimed at stopping criminals from gaining an advantage over peace officers, or security guards like Aaron Salter, who was killed trying to stop the gunman's racist attack on the Buffalo supermarket.

Of the shooters who killed four or more people in a public space since 1966, 12% wore body vests, said sociologist James Densley, a co-founder of The Violence Project, a nonprofit think tank with a database on mass shootings.

New York's law restricts sales of soft bullet-resistant vests to people who work in law enforcement and the military, plus people in certain other professions that require protective gear. "I’ve been doing it for about a month now," said Eddie Prest. "It’s very trying times right now, people are uncomfortable. I’m not profiteering off of that. This is something I’ve been planning on doing for a while."He has a pop-up tent, a faceless mannequin, and a folding table for his display of plates, which include the 'Trump 2020' logo, the Gadsden flag, and the American flag as options.

"The whole set-up with the vest and front, back and side plates is $450 out the door," said Prest, who took cash from one man and had another man pay him through an app, in a matter of minutes.

"It’s going to be used in airsoft. Just for the weight, [for] now," he said. "And conveniently, if the world feels like coming to an end, I guess I’ll be set. THE VOLUNTEERS PACKING THOUSANDS OF FIRST AID KITS FOR UKRAINE

At the Meest warehouse in Port Reading, New Jersey, hundreds of Razom volunteers of all ages and backgrounds have been hard at work since the early days of russia’s full-scale invasion. With music playing in the background, an organized assembly line powered by volunteers produces 6,000 to 8,000 IFAKs every week. The team recently broke a record – packing over 3,000 IFAKs in one shift.

Andriy Boychuk, who helps organize the process, starts his volunteer days at 7 a.m. Supplies bought off Razom’s Amazon wishlist get delivered, opened, and sorted at his home. He takes that over with him to the warehouse to start his shift at 9 a.m.
There are 15 items that go into an IFAK from tourniquets to gauze to burn dressing, and the warehouse works like a conveyor belt with people responsible for packing about three items each into the kit. Before the IFAK is closed, colorful postcards drawn by kids through the Encourage Ukraine initiative are folded in. Those IFAKs go into boxes, and everything is systematized and labeled so people on the receiving end in Ukraine know exactly what to expect, Andriy said.

Prior to February, Boychuk said he didn’t even know what the term “tacmed” – tactical medicine – meant. A marketer by trade, he spoke to Razom co-founder Mariya Soroka and simply said he wanted to help in any way possible. Today, he is the tacmed coordinator.Yuliia Shama had volunteered with Razom’s Co-Pilot Project and participated in the organization’s book club before russia’s invasion. The week before the war started, Razom issued a call for help with medical donations and Yuliia joined the initiative. She was assigned to the emergency response team working on tactical medicine including finding and procuring important supplies, and consulting with military doctors and other medical experts on what would be needed.

In the early days of the project, approximately 40 people in the United States, Europe and Canada were calling manufacturers and suppliers asking for quotes and looking for high-quality, licensed, and certified supplies, especially high quality tourniquets. “It was 24/7 work for many people to get these quotes and do negotiations,” she said.

In the early weeks, many suppliers donated or waived fees when they found out supplies would be heading to Ukraine. Within three days, the Meest warehouse was full of donations and Shama knew a detailed process and well-organized team was the best way forward.

Today, she’s managing the project in the warehouse and the process is completely streamlined from where to order items to tracking and packing. Donations to Razom are funding purchases of bulk medical supplies going into IFAKs and backpacks.

An old industrial complex in the south-eastern Ukrainian riverside city of Zaporizhzhya has become a hive of activity for volunteers, ranging from body armor and anti-tank barriers to camouflage nets, portable heating, for Ukrainian soldiers fighting the invasion of Russia. When Russia invaded on February 24, she was in Thailand to seek inspiration for her spring collection. Initially, she said, she wondered if this was a sign from God that she should not return. Her husband and two adult sons urged her not to do so.

She had known Busharov for years. Coming home on 3 March, she gathered her equipment the next day and was in Paliantsia until 5 March. She is working there every day once in a while, sometimes even at night.

From designing a backless ballgown to creating a functional bulletproof vest was “a new experience for me,” Grekova said. But he sought feedback from soldiers for his designs, which feature armor plates. Now she’s helping to design several versions, including a prototype summer vest.

A furniture maker by trade, he joined Palianitsia at the beginning of the war. In the event of Russian troops advancing on Zaporizhzhya, he began to make Molovov cocktails. In 10 days, he produced 14,000, he said. They then began to produce anti-tank barriers known as hedgehogs – three large metal beams joined together at angles – used as part of the city’s defences. Soon, Bushrov and Vovchenko said, they discovered a more pressing need: There weren’t enough bulletproof jackets for Ukraine’s soldiers.“I was not really attached to the army at all,” said Vovchenko. “It took two days and three sleepless nights to understand what needs to be done.”

The team studied different types of steel, made plates and tested them to check bullet penetration. Some didn’t offer enough protection, others were too heavy to be functional. Then he had a success.

“It turns out that the steel used for car suspension has very good properties for bullet penetration,” said Vovchenko, standing in front of four shelves of test plates with varying degrees of bullet damage. The car’s suspension steel one was hit by dozens of bullets, but none penetrated.

Vests and everything else made in Paliantsia are provided free of charge to soldiers who request them, as long as they can prove they are in the army. Each plate is numbered and each vest has a label indicating it is not for sale.

Started up at least four months ahead of schedule, the facility is aimed to enable Yokohama Off-Highway Tires (YOHT) "to respond more quickly to expanding global demand for off-road tires," said Yokohama in a statement 18 Aug.

Yokohama began construction work on the $171-million (€146 million) facility in the third quarter of 2020 to support a 1.6-fold expansion project at its production unit in Dahej, in the state of Gujarat.

In its initial production stage, the Visakhapatnam unit will have a daily manufacturing capacity of 69 tonnes in rubber weight.

The daily capacity will be increased to 132 tonnes per day in the second phase, which is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2024.

Further expansion of the plant’s capacity is under consideration.

Once fully completed, the Visakhapatnam facility will raise Yokohama’s overall production capacity for off-road tires to 548 tonnes (rubber weight) per day.

The plant will be operated by YOHT, a subsidiary that was formed in 2021 and combines Yokohama’s off-road tires business with that of the Alliance Tire Group (ATG).

YOHT operates two other tire facilities in India – the Dahej plant and the Tirunelveli unit in Tamil Nadu.

The three facilities produce three of the group’s core off-highway tire brands – the Alliance, Galaxy and Primex brands – which are used on agricultural, construction, industrial and forestry machinery.

Under its medium-term management plan, Yokohama Transformation 2023（YX2023), Yokohama has positioned off-highway tires as a “growth driver”.
