Smugglers Box for a Mid

Old vans from the early 60's, such as my 1965 Ford Econoline, are designed to be compact and are considered the first minivans. There's a good amount of room inside but no place to lock up valuables out of sight unless you install a locked box somewhere. If you don't mind doing some cutting into the floor, and permanently modifying your van, then there are two locations where you can utilize unused space underneath the van. I call it a smugglers imitation clover diamond earrings box because it's more fun than a battery box or extra underfloor storage and reminds me of smuggling Droids and Jedi Knights in a film made 11 years after my van was built. Lets get started.

To do this you will need a lot of gear including welding, cutting and grinding tools. Because I live in an apartment and don't own any of these tools I made it at Tech Shop. The one I am using here is just inside the side doors behind the rocker panel. The box I built is 32 in long x 11 in deep x 8 inches wide. I used these dimensions to make it possible to hold up to 2 batteries. Your dimensions may vary or need adjustment as you progress depending on your needs and also how accurately you are able to cut the hole into the floor.

To cut the hole I identified natural lines that will not intersect with the frame or other important structures underneath the van and also worked with the ridges that are embossed into the sheetmetal floor of the van. I cut the floor with a portable Plasma cutter which goes through metal like warm butter but you could also use a high speed cutting wheel.

Measure out the hole you will cut and draw a line to follow with chalk or grease pencil. It is a good idea to drain and remove your gas tank before you do this step.

Once you've cut the hole it's time to grind down any rough spots and even out the lines so they are nice and straight. The edge doesn't need to be perfect because it will be covered by the angle iron but it should be fairly straigh so the lip of metal gives something to hold on to. Remeasure the hole to confirm the final size. Cut your 1/8 x 1 inch angle iron to fit the length of the hole imitation vca alhambra earrings plus 1 extra inch on either end. you will notch a square van cleef and arpels clover earrings imitation out of the underside of the angle iron so it will have a lip extending out onto the floor. This will mate with the connecting bars that fit between. Line up the 4 angle iron parts and confirm that they are the correct lengths and that they mate well inside the hole that you cut. The function of this part is to grip the edges of the hole and be the main support of the contents of the box.

Use any extra angle iron and some clamps to make the frame square and flat and then use your welder to tack weld the corners together till it is strong enough to lift out and keep it's shape. For safety I usually remove my gas tank when I am welding on the van itself. If you would rather not do that you can try to clamp the parts together securely and weld outside of the van. Wear protective gear when you weld.

Once you have the frame tacked together you can begin to weld each joint where it makes contact with the other piece.

When you're done, grind down flat any rough spots or slag.

Step 4: Measure, Cut and Bend the Box Parts: Straps

I used a variety of scrap mild steel to build the box, some steel yards sell their leftover cuts by the pound so you can get a good deal.

for the straps that provide support I used 1/8 x 2 inch steel. The box is 10.5 in deep and 8 in wide so I cut each strap on the horizontal bandsaw to 29 in leaving about 1/4 inch extra for the bends. This box will be pretty rough so don't expect perfection and sometimes parts will not turn out. Buy a bit more steel than you think you will need.

After I cut the straps I measured where I wanted the bends and then used the steel press to bend 90 degree angles.

Step 5: Weld the Straps Into Place.

Once you have the straps cut you can place them onto the frame and check everything out. make sure it all line up and make any corrections that are necessary. If it all fits tight enough you can weld together as is or use clamps to hold the parts in place. I placed the straps so they are outside the frame gripping the edge and welded anywhere there was an exposed seam or contact point. My welding skills are pretty low but everything seems to have melted together properly. A made a lot of redundant welds to ensure it will stay together.

Once the straps are welded on it might be good to double check that everything looks and fits right by dropping it back into the hole in the van floor.

I rattlecan primered the raw steel with white since that was what I had in my paint box, then I applied matte black. I originally intended to powdercoat everything but that would require quite a bit of sandblasting. Rust Oleum is pretty durable and forgiving of imperfect prep. I may also seal the box later with some type of rubberized coating or perhaps a thick enamel paint. Let it dry. Drop it in and test the fit and finish. If you made the depth between 10.5 and 11 inches it should just barely be visible below the rocker panel if you squat down to look at it. At that depth if should be able to hold a standard car battery.

Congrats you just made a Smugglers Box for your van. Next I will add a lid but that solution may vary depending on what type of flooring, if any , you will have on top of it.

The 6 Biggest Christmas F

3. Santa Hitches a Ride in a Police Van, Traumatizes Kids

In a time where it's getting harder and harder to trust the police, the cops in the British town of Aberdare found the perfect solution: helping out Father Christmas himself during a parade full of adoring children and their families. because Scotland Yard finally nabbed that elf abusing, midnight cookies stealing bastard. banknotes don't even have "In God We Trust" written on them, so there's no chance of any last minute Miracle on 34th Street style exonerations.

2. Pennsylvania Town Has the Worst Christmas Tree Ever

The people of Reading, Pennsylvania, have a major problem: they live in Pennsylvania. Also, they're stuck with what's being called the ugliest Christmas tree in America after city workers decided not to go to the tree farm because they feared their truck would get stuck in the mud. Instead, they just grabbed the first vaguely tree looking thing they could find, but they might as well have brought a bucket of mud.

Frank Warner/The Morning Call

The residents are frantically writing letters to North Korea.

The tree in question, a magnificent sounding 45 foot tall Norway spruce, is so pitiful that there no jokes that could match the awful reality. For a while, its only decoration was a single Peanuts esque bauble because you might as well embrace the nightmare with both arms while, according to one resident, local birds refuse to land on it, presumably out of fear that they'll tip it over. Or just fear.

It isn't all bad, though. In a turn of events worthy of an '80s feel good romp, once the tree got national coverage, the community rallied against plans to remove it . despite initially gathering money to destroy it. Some even consider it van cleef black earrings imitation a metaphor for the festive season itself, as opposed to a metaphor for really, really wanting those dumb tourist dollars.

1. Card Manufacturer Incites Class War

At best, a Christmas card will make you say, "That's nice," before you put it away and forget about it forever. In the absolute worst case scenario, you'll roll your eyes at the bad joke and throw it in the trash. That was before a British card maker took things to the next level by using the medium for a festive spot of classism:"Fuck coal; I'm dropping a 'yule log' in these guys' stockings."

The card listed 10 reasons why Santa Claus lives on a council estate, something that may sound like a fancy type of castle but is actually British public housing. The provided reasons included "He has a serial record for breaking and entering," "He only works once a imitation van cleef and arpels butterfly earrings year," and "He drinks alcohol during work hours," which is just straight up slander, as opposed to an imitation vca alhambra earrings observation based on any part of the Santa canon.

As a Brit, Adam would like to apologize on behalf of his fellow countrymen for, like, everything that was just mentioned. He'd also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Except you. You know what you did.

Scientists discover 'near death' evidence

The study, one of the most extensive scientific investigations into the phenomenon, shows that almost one in five heart attack patients who were brought back to life had had an NDE.

The van cleef arpels clover necklace replica researchers say known medical explanations cannot account for these out of body sensations.

Dr Pim van Lommel and colleagues from the Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem, Holland, investigated the experiences of 344 heart patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest.

All had been clinically dead at some point during their treatment, says a report in The Lancet today.

Sixty two patients reported NDE, of whom 41 described a deep experience during a special state of consciousness. These included outofbody experiences, pleasant feelings, and seeing a tunnel, a light, deceased relatives, or a life review.

The researchers said: 'Our results show that medical factors cannot account for occurrence of NDE; although all patients had been clinically dead, most did not have NDE.

'If purely physiological factors caused NDE, most of our patients should have had this experience.'

Dr Sam Parnia, a clinical research fellow at Southampton University who made similar findings earlier this year, called the latest report 'very exciting'.

'This is a very significant study because it takes us one step closer to understanding the human condition at the end of life which has been ignored by the scientific community until recently,' he added.

The Dutch researchers also found that NDEs were more common among people under 60. Deeper NDE experiences were more common among women.

The experience made people believe strongly in an afterlife and removed their fear of death. Dr Parnia, who hopes to carry out further research in Britain if he can get funding, said the Dutch study shows some people have remarkably similar impressions of what happens when they are clinically dead.

'In the past it has been assumed that consciousness comes to an end when the brain stops functioning, but there may be some kind of independent existence,' he said.

'It is also significant that people who had an out of body experience had a lessened fear of death as a result. Previously it has been suggested that just being close to death makes people feel that way, but it was not found among those who did not have NDE.'

He added: 'The main significance of the NDE lies in the understanding of the relationship between mind and brain, which has remained a topic of debate in contemporary philosophy, psychology and neuroscience.

'Very little is known scientifically about the subjective experience of dying, the nature of the human mind and its outcome during " clinical death". The findings need to be investigated with a much larger study. If the results are van cleef and arpels necklace alhambra fake replicated, it would imply that the mind may continue to exist after the death of the body, or an afterlife.'

But chartered psychologist Christopher French, from Goldsmiths College, London, said there were alternative explanations for NDEs.

'Some van cleef and arpel necklace fake people may have developed a false memory based on something called imaginative inflation, where the individual actually takes on board the details of an experience as if it did happen.'

Sunday's Pride Parade caps week

For 19 years, the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual community has gathered to march and show off their Pride in Victoria, growing from 200 people marching down Government Street to the legislature in 1994 to the week long celebration it is now.

"You can just be who you are, dress up and have fun. People find that they can vca necklace imitation be anything or anyone they want on this one day," said Laurissa Chapple, media and communications co ordinator for the Victoria Pride Society.

"In Victoria and on Vancouver Island, people who are living with HIV definitely experience social isolation and can experience stigma as a result of their diagnosis," said Eric Bendt, the communications manager for AIDS Vancouver Island. The group uses the parade to celebrate the gay van cleef arpel necklace copy community and promote safer sex and awareness.

The parade leaves at noon from Government Street and Pandora Avenue. Floats and marchers will go down Government, turning on Menzies Street and Kingston as they make their vca necklace fake way toward MacDonald Park on Oswego Street.

The Duluth music scene is being Trampled

From shipwrecks and legends to music stylings and gatherings there are always interesting stories floating around. One to add might be why the most popular band with young people in Duluth is an electric bluegrass band named Trampled By Turtles?

On Friday night Pizza Luce was packed with a rowdy college crowd surrounding the stage and dancing with fervor. It was interesting that the audience was so into folk/bluegrass music. If you plugged your ears and looked out you might think you were at a rock concert. Many crowded dancing patrons looked like they were about to start a mosh pit with their enthusiasm.

I asked Erik Berry, mandolin/guitar of Trampled By Turtles about this love of their band. He joked that at one show a guy was stumbling around the front of the stage with a mohawk. When he confronted the punk rocker after the show about why he was swaying into the crowd he learned that it was not a mosh pit he was trying to start, but a drunken stumble he was trying to end. Erik's mandolin is more high tech than any bluegrass band might take control of, but the electric sound is mesmerizing. He originally got into bluegrass while working for the college radio station hosting a three hour folk music show every Saturday for two summers.

Trampled By Turtles consists of four members with very separate influences and music talents. From Punk to Phish, it is strange how Trampled By Turtles came to be. Only Dave Carroll, Banjo, grew up in a family that played bluegrass music. The band's influences are classics like The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, and several other traditional bluegrassers. With a cover like Nirvana's On A Plane TBT stretches the bluegrass genre and lights it up on stage.

The story goes that they were jamming out in a living room about a year and a half ago and it all just came together. Tim Saxhaug, bass and vocals commented that, "when we play we feel and react to the music, which ends up driving the tempo." Tim had played and continues to assist the Dukes of Hubbard which is an electric blues band. The Dukes are still around, but the crowds continue to grow for Trampled By Turtles. Even at Minneapolis clubs like The Cabooze, Uptown Bar van cleef & arpels alhambra necklace imitation and 5 Corners where Rock is a staple TBT is trampling the competition. vintage alhambra necklace copy The crowds in Duluth follow the band religiously to clubs and seek out this great band.

Trampled By Turtles manage themselves and have gained a reputation of playing fun and great folk/bluegrass music. They released a CD last year titled Songs From A Ghost Town and are headed back to the studio this winter to record a new CD. Both have the writing style of Dave Simonett who became a bluegrass fan while living in Duluth. Soon after they record they are headed out on tour to Iowa, Colorado, Kansas and several other locations. On December 10th is their big show at the Nor Shor, their first time in the Main Room. Ryan Van Dyke will be showing his art from 6 to 8 PM with music from the mezzanine. Trampled By Turtles takes the stage after great acts like Devil's Flying Machine featuring Charlie Parr, and Accident Clearing House. Tickets are available at the Electric Fetus, Pizza Luce and other locations.

Trampled By Turtles is the premiere band of Duluth that is really taking off. These slow moving turtles are literally trampling other bands and growing a definite following. From Dred locked van cleef & arpels alhambra necklace copy hippies to vest and stocking cap groupies TBT is taking over the local music scene. It is only time before they are playing the DECC and moshing in a new era of American Folk Music!

The climate crisis may be taking a toll on your mental health

In the late hours of Nov.8, as the deep red electoral map forecast who would take the White House, a forest ecologist and friend texted me in frustration about his work, "What's the point?"

You see, his research involves tree mortality. forests from drought, disease, insects and wildfire, much of it exacerbated by the climate crisis. But on election night, my friend and perhaps many others found the thought of combating this devastating global crisis even more insurmountable as Donald Trump, a climate change denier, was elected president of the United States.

The world's rising temperatures don't just cause glaciers to melt, coral reefs to bleach and forests to burn, but can also tip a person from mentally healthy to mentally ill. A growing body of research shows that climate change is taking a significant toll on mental health, according to a newreport from the American Psychological Association. (The 69 page review was released March 29, the day after Trump issued executive ordersrolling back Obama era regulations designed to mitigate global warming.)

The report finds that "ecoanxiety" the feeling of impending environmental doom is happening on a global scale. And because of that, it is time to expand awareness of and action on climate change's effect on mental health.

The manifestations of a warming planet can affect a person in various ways. "We know that warmer temperatures tend to be associated with aggression and conflict," Clayton said. "We know that if people have to migrate and have to leave their home, it a specific risk factor for mental health."

Sudden effects, such as extreme storms, heat waves and floods, can be especially traumatizing. The report cites research on Hurricane Katrina survivors, whose rates of suicide and incidence of suicidal thoughts have doubled. One in six met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, and 49 percent of people living in an affected area developed an anxiety or mood disorder such as depression.

"When the place you call home is burned down, blown away, dried up or flooded; when you lose your possessions or your pets, your livelihood, your community; and see injuries, illness and death, the mix of fear, anger, sorrow and trauma can easily send a person to the breaking point," psychiatrist and environmental advocate Lise van Susteren said in March at a climate and health presentation in Atlanta.

Van Susteren said climate change acts as a mental health multiplier that escalates existing mental health problems.

"For example, for each standard deviation of increased temperature and rainfall, we can expect a 4 percent increase of conflict between individuals and a 14 percent increase in conflict between groups," she said. "The findings are valid for all ethnicities and regions, so [there could be] more assault, murders van cleef and arpels mother of pearl necklace replica and suicides and increase in unrest all over the world."

Gradual, long term changes in the climate can also negatively impact the psyche. The APA describes how the Inuit in Canada feel like they are losing control of their traditions and livelihoods as the circumpolar north warms at more than twice the rate of the global average. The community relies on the land to hunt, trap, fish, forage and harvest food, but interviewees reported feelings of sadness, fear, anxiety, stress, distress and frustration due to decreased opportunities for land based activities. Some reported turning to drugs and alcohol as a way to fill the newly time. As one community member said, "We are people of the sea ice. If there's no more sea ice, how can we be people of the sea ice?"

Certain populations are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including people who live in risk prone areas, indigenous communities, low income groups, certain communities of color, women, children, older adults and people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

Citing multiple studies, the APA explains that young people are more vulnerable than healthy adults because of their small size, developing organs and nervous systems and rapid metabolisms (children typically demonstrate more severe distress than adults). One study found that some preschoolers who lost their homes to Hurricane Sandy developed a phobia of rain, waves and thunder that translated to panic about taking baths, going to school (which they feared might flood), and swimming.

"Children also have the potential to be emotionally affected if they become separated from their primary caregivers," the APA states. "Similar to physical experiences, traumatic mental experiences can have lifelong effects."

Additionally, the report makes a clear link between mental health issues preceding physical health issues. The stress of climate change "can increase levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which, if prolonged, can affect digestion, lead to memory loss, and suppress the immune system," the report states. Stress is also a van cleef turquoise necklace fake serious risk factor in developing cardiovascular disease.

Even hearing about others negative experiences can affect one's mental stability.

"Some people are deeply affected by feelings of loss, helplessness, and frustration due to their inability to feel like they are making a difference in stopping climate change," writes the APA. "Some [researchers] stress the possible detrimental impact of guilt, as people contemplate the impact of their own behavior on future generations."

As van Susteren commented, "Should I have a baby?" is a question increasingly asked by young people worried about the carbon cost of bringing another human into the world.

"Some of us are lucky enough to be at a distance from the world's climate disasters, but we're not potted plants sitting here," she said. "It is painful seeing people drown, burn, flooded, starve, right?"

So how does one cope with ecoanxiety? There are a number of strategies, but Clayton said the most important thing is to encourage social connections and make people feel more secure and give them greater access to information.

The APA lists additional solutions that are good for both people and the planet: "Physical commuting, such as biking or walking, can reduce stress and other mental illnesses, as well as improve cognitive function and academic performance. [Taking] public transportation invigorates community mental health by creating opportunities and networks to increase community cohesion. Just 15 minutes in nature can make one happier. Of course, a ruined climate will make it harder to do this, which is why the APA points out that everyone should get involved with implementing solutions and policies that will help preserve our environment and prevent further climate change.

Although climate change might feel too remote, daunting or depressing to fight, ignoring or denying the problem won't make it go away. (For the record, my forest ecologist friend said he's van cleef necklace alhambra copy "more motivated now than ever" in light of the climate change denier in chief.)

"The fact that most of us ignore climate change paradoxically makes the effects worse because we don really know what to expect and it seems scary and unknown," Clayton said, "but if we inform ourselves that that what is likely to happen in our area, we would be more prepared and in control of the situation."

The 5 Most Hilariously Awkward Press Conferences Ever

Let me get something out of the way: Bobby Knight, legendary former coach of the Indiana Hoosiers, is a piece of shit. He's never made an effort to hide that fact, and in many ways, he wears it like a badge of honor. In that respect, fuck Bobby Knight. BUT .

He does have moments where his pitch black evil can be used for priceless entertainment. In the above video, he was asked what he thought one of his players, Damon Bailey, would look like next year. He started to respond with his normal asshole tone, pointing out that there is no way he could possibly know that without waiting to see him play next year. But in the middle, he interrupted himself and any other questions to grab a drinking glass, turn it upside down, and start rubbing it like a genie's lamp.

And he didn't just do it quickly, making his point and moving on. No, he continued doing it for about a minute, just rubbing the piss out of that thing and pausing to gaze into it as if he were reading the future. "I see . I see Bailey . the image is fading ." On and on, he jammed the joke clear into the core of the Earth until even polite laughter wasn't an option anymore, finally ending it with "I see Bailey . being better." Ah, great. Sarcastic point made. Good show, old chap.

But then the same guy asked his follow up question: "Do you see him being the playmaker for next year's team?" Every reporter in the room erupts with laughter as Knight's eyes roll up into his head and he reaches for the cup again. Same deal, only this time he ends with "Wait a minute, there's something forming here . forming. It says . 'What a shitty question.'"Tony Stewart Is an Amazing Smartass

For those of you (like me) who couldn't give the most tepid of flickering fucks about racing, that's Tony Stewart one of the most sarcastic dickheads in the history of the sport. He publicly mocks the announcers for making things up and blatantly calls them (and many other drivers) stupid. He's also been known to intentionally wreck other drivers as payback for . well, whatever happens to be pissing him off in that particular moment. But don't let me paint him as van cleef perlee bangle fake a supervillain, because it's a lot more common than you'd think.

To really get how funny that video is, though, you have to understand the background. In 2011, Stewart won the Sylvania 300 in New Hampshire when the guy in front of him ran out of gas with only two laps to go. As weird as it sounds to us "fuck racing" people, it's another thing that's pretty common it happened to Stewart the year before in a reverse situation with the exact same driver. In the embedded video, they talk about that parallel quite openly, because, hey, who wouldn't? It's one of those "Did van cleef alhambra bracelet replica you know Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy?" moments that you just have to call attention to.

That's Stewart, taking first place as the yellow car winds down like a limp dick.

So when they opened up the press box for questions, the first one came from a guy who 1) obviously didn't pay attention to or even watch the race and 2) didn't pay attention to a single second of the press conference he was attending. He asked Stewart about how he knew it was time to make his move in order to take the lead and what strategy and technique he used to pull it off. Without batting an eye, Stewart said in a straight man, monotone voice:

"I planned it for 280 some odd laps. I knew he was going to run out of fuel right at that moment, and as opposed to just driving through him and running over him, it just seemed like it may have been an easier option just to turn left and drive around him. So I guess that was my strategy all along. I knew kinda that's what we were going to do, I just had to wait for that opportunity."Jim Calhoun Gets Real on That Ass

This one isn't funny, but it's extremely satisfying when you understand what's going on. The guy in the video is Jim Calhoun, a Basketball Hall of Fame college coach with a list of credentials that makes most other college coaches look like drooling dumbasses in jean shorts flailing around on a playground court. At the time, he was coaching at the University of Connecticut, so he was considered a state employee . one of the highest paid state employees at that, exactly when Connecticut was going through some pretty bad budget problems. The guy asking the questions is Ken Krayeske, an extreme left liberal activist who had a huge hard on for anything controversial. The guy would fuck a pig into bacon strips if he thought it would promote his agenda.

Krayeske asks right off the bat about his salary, to which Calhoun interrupts, "Not a dime back." He is referring to a request from the governor for state employees to give some of their salary back in order to help cut the state's deficit. Because that's totally logical and not at all stupid. The coach follows it up with an extremely dumb comment about wanting to be able to retire someday, and you are perfectly within your rights to want to punch his face completely off of his rich, entitled fucking head for that. But we can't let that cloud what happens next, because it is a thing of beauty.

"Let me tell you a little Dunkin' about Donuts, kid ."

Krayeske asks him, "What's the deal with Comcast worth?" to which Calhoun replies, "You're not really that stupid, are you?" No huge story there he had a side commercial deal with Comcast, and he was pretty vocal about not disclosing how much he made with them. This part of the video is important because it's when he realized what he was dealing with: an obviously planned confrontation from an activist blogger who wanted to impose on him how to distribute his wealth and spend his money. Because to people like Krayeske, managing other people's money is extremely easy.

And then comes my favorite part of the video. When the coach starts reaming him for being a douche, Krayeske says, "If these guys [the other reporters in the room] covered this stuff, I wouldn't have to." The whole room erupts in groans and one very audible "Oh, give us a break," followed by Calhoun hitting his breaking point:

"Quite frankly, we bring in 12 million to the university. Nothing to do with state funds. We make $12 million a year for this university. Get some facts and come back and see me. [.] Don't throw out salaries and other things; get some facts and come back and see me. We turn over over $12 million to the University of Connecticut, which is state run. Next question."

There is no big background story here. This one is just a straight up stupid fucking question:

"Coach, all week you've seemed really relaxed. I'm wondering how much of that was actually true, real relaxation how'd you sleep last night? I mean, give us a sense of what you actually went through this week."

And with that, LSU coach Les Miles had the only reaction a normal, sane human could have. He burst out laughing and said, "That is not even relevant" in the same tone you use when saying, "What the fuck are you talking about?" He continued, "Who cares? I didn't sleep worth a dang all week. Then last night, I slept pretty good hell, I was exhausted." Then a long pause as he desperately looks around for literally anyone else to talk to, followed by a response in the style of mock pleasant conversation, "It was a nice hotel we stayed in. It was in Birmingham. It was really . I'll tell you about it."

"Sorry, I'm waiting for Ashton Kutcher to come out and tell me I just got punked. He still does that, right?"

This was one of those instances where I was van cleef bracelet replica positive someone had just sent an intern in their place because they had a haircut scheduled at the same time as that interview. Or maybe it was a Weekend at Bernie's situation where the real reporter was dead and being flopped around by a couple of college kids, fooling everyone into thinking he was alive. "Shit, ask a question before they notice something's up!" "Um . were you just pretending to be relaxed yesterday? Do you ever wish that people would just love you for you?"

OK, let's get this part over with: Steve Spurrier is the coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks. Give yourself a few minutes to get it out of your system.

The Dance of Albion circa 1795

This is a hypothetical image for a hypothetical day. It's an affirmative vision for a moment that's very unlikely to be now. It was chosen in advance, of course. But whatever results are emerging this morning, William Blake's The Dance of Albion can only feel like a cruel irony or a bitter protest or an impossibly remote ideal. Even in its own day, it was highly optimistic.

Albion is England, a personification of this island. In this picture also known as Albion Rose or Glad Day he symbolises England's political awakening and liberty. A naked man stands on a rock in a sunrise, rising above the material world, welcoming the dawn. This elemental scene was coined at a time of revolution and repression, and Blake added captions to focus his meanings. Pictorially, there's nothing to set it in any specific age or place or politics.

All the same, Albion represents a uniquely utopian figure. His body itself speaks an abstract but articulate language. This nude is delivered from all bondage and all untruth. It is beyond conflict, beyond struggle and inner struggle, wholly realised. And yet this figure isn't stuck in final utopian lifelessness, as you might suspect. He holds an interplay between static pattern and dynamic tension.

Stasis first. The figure is a centrifuge. Its energy is fully released. It's the polar opposite to another static form, often used by Blake a human body self imprisoned, totally compacted into a ball or a block, its power pent up and contained. Albion goes all the other way. His body is flung outward. His limbs unbend and reach out as far as they can, and each limb is free of others. He is absolute liberation.

The figure is innocent. It has no sophisticated classical complexity, no van cleef necklace butterfly copy graceful twisting of torso and stance. The naked body lies on a single plane, and it faces full frontal. Its arms are not raised in victory either, but level and opened to the world. The figure is at the point of maximal unfolding. There is no potential in this pose, no compression, implying something further. This stance is fully actualised. It has arrived, now!

This is the figure's utopian aspect: its uttermost unfolding, its extreme openness and unboundedness. And this simple pose is what gives it an archetypal power. The body is identified with a bold clear shape. But if that was all there was to it, this figure would only manifest a perfect and inert simplicity. You'd have a version of this image where the body was mapped onto a regular diagram, like a human starfish. It would lack any feeling of desire and spontaneity.

Albion eludes this strict diagram. His figure has dynamic elements. For example, his pose is centrifugal, but not altogether. You see strain in his gestures. His hands don't stretch right out, they are flexed right back. They indicate that Albion still wants more, more. He's trying to embrace the world, more than he can embrace or trying to display his van cleef pearl necklace imitation body, more than he can display. His reach exceeds his grasp.

Meanwhile, his legs break a stable symmetry. One stands upright and supporting on the rock; the other is on the wing, lightly and gracefully touching down. The body's weight is uneven. The foot begins to lift. The head is slightly turned. Action enters the figure. The Dance of Albion is in the middle of a dance step, and its level arms are keeping its balance. It might be on the point of a spin. So the utopian figure is saved from being fixed and rigid. It is still aspiring and still moving.

And then a pattern returns, and at another level. This image has a ruling design, a radiant structure, which incorporates the whole figure and all its limbs and everything. Arms and legs emerge like the spokes of a wheel, roughly centred on the diaphragm, but it's not merely a matter of the anatomy. The crucial device here, never used by Blake elsewhere (or by anyone else) so explicitly and so strongly, is the equation between the body and its background.

The outflung stance of Albion is picked up and drawn out by the radiating beams around him his own shining aura, perhaps, or an entire sun bursting sky, which is also a multi coloured flame and a flowering and a butterfly wing. Likewise, the glowing substance of Albion's flesh is on the point of physically merging with this radiance, so that the body could be materialising out of light or dematerialising into it, and the energy of the body is at one with pure energy. His head explodes into a flare.

Albion is in glory. England is in union with the universe. All worldly politics is dazzled. Who could ever imagine this glad day on any morning, or dare to frame this image on any public poster? It could only be propaganda for a party of apocalypse.

William Blake (1757 1827): painter, printmaker, visionary, myth maker, religious and political revolutionary, aphorist, poet. But for all his multiple accomplishments you never find anyone calling him a "Renaissance man". He's not respectable enough for that title. The shadow of eccentricity still falls on his greatness. His visual work, for example, is an unresolvable blend of staggering originality and limitation. He trained and worked as an engraver and illustrator. He weirdly mixed the influences of Michelangelo and Gothic art and mixes up text and image even more inextricably than a medieval manuscript. There's a sense in which he can't draw. His colour schemes are unheard of. His images are stuck in a sealed off, home made system. His human figures are always spiritual symbols and in the process, his art becomes a comprehensive experiment with the human body whose only parallel is in Picasso.

segment horror anthology directed

"XX" is a four segment horror anthology, with each entry directed by a different female filmmaker. The episodes are all engaging, albeit uneven: Gore fans will be bored by the first two segments, which are more psychologically scary. Viewers who flinch at the sight of blood may want to leave at the third tale but come back for the last one. The four stories are linked by an animated sequence directed by a fifth female filmmaker, Sofia Carrillo.

Jovanka Vuckovic, who is the associate producer of "XX," directed the first entry in the anthology,a striking adaptation of Jack Ketchum's story "The Box," about Danny (Peter DaCunha), a young boy whose life changes after he peeks into a stranger's box on the subway. His mother, Susan (Natalie Brown) responds oddly to her son's behavior, which soon affects the entire family.

The second tale, "The Birthday Party," directed by Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), is more of a black comedy than a horror film. Mary (Melanie Lynskey) is planning a costume party for her young daughter when she makes a startling discovery. As she tries to prevent a crisis, everything gets in her way.

The gorier entries are "Don't Fall," by Roxanne Benjamin, about four friends on a hike who encounter something strange and deadly, and "Her Only Living Son," by Karyn Kusama, in which a mother (Christina Kirk) makes some unsettling discoveries about her son (Kyle Allen) on his 18th birthday.

Salon chatted with Vuckovic about horror versus terror, female filmmakers and making "XX."

There has been a spate of horror anthologies in recent years. How did this particular project come about?

Basically, van cleef alhambra diamond necklace imitation the producer Todd Brown and I noticed that a lot of women were being passed over for jobs on these horror anthologies. I was going to crowdfund an all women anthology, and then Todd asked me about doing one. He brought in financing, and I quickly abandoned my concept and jumped on board and became an associate producer of "XX."

We made a list of directors we wanted to approach, which sounds easier than it is. Seven percent of all working directors are women. But it's difficult to find a handful of women to commit to the timeline and budget. We lost Antonia Bird [known for "Ravenous"] to cancer. She was at the top of the list. We lost our funding a week before shooting, and Todd swooped in and found Magnolia [Pictures], and they gave us complete creative control. That probably the only time that will ever happen to me in my professional career! We started fouryears ago and I completed my section twoyears ago.

We lost other directors to other jobs, but the final lineup was magic. Peter Van Steemburg from Magnolia Pictures suggested Annie Clark. We had no idea what she would do. We didn't talk to each other about what we'd do. We just put them together. Roxie [Benjamin] is like a hero to us. She was going to co write and produce for Annie, but we lost another director, and she turned around and wrote, directed and delivered her segment in record time.

How do you feel gender is portrayed in horror? There are final girls, and women are often exploited for their bodies or sexuality. The films in "XX" don't really do that at all.

Representation of women!

Historically we have been pincushions and knife fodder and final girls, but final girls are a trope, and not a real person. The best example of a final girl is Ripley from "Alien," but she started out as a man. Ridley Scott changed the gender of the protagonist. There's a lack of representation, and the opportunities for women actors are limited. It's difficult.

So my goal as a filmmaker is to tell stories about women, not just about gender, but all sorts of lifestyles so there isn't a whitewashed version of the world. As the Geena Davis Institute says, "If they can see it, they can be it."

The horror genre is badly in knock off van cleef alhambra mother of pearl necklace need of new perspectives, and women are needed in spades.

For some folks, not seeing the monster as in "Jaws" is scary. For others, it's ratcheting up the tension, like in "Wait Until Dark." Some filmmakers use music, as Hitchcock did in "Psycho," to scare viewers. Other filmmakers use "boo!" moments. What do you think makes horror effective?

David Lynch was successful in making pencil erasers evoke feelings of dread. That's successful. It's easy to say, "boo!" and get a jump scare. I'm more attracted to stories that sink in and stay with you long after the lights come on. I categorize films like Denis Villeneuve's "Enemy," and [Jonathan Glazer's] "Under the Skin" as horror films. They are not conventional straightforward horror. There are tons of subgenres.

Devendra P. Varma explained the difference between terror and horror. I'm paraphrasing, but terror is like walking into a house and knowing that there is a dead body there. Horror is tripping over it. The experiences are very different. We use horror in cheap ways boo! moments and gore films but Hitchcock is terror. Some people like one more than the other. In my advanced age, I lean more towards terror, which is why I chose to make "The Box" versus Roxie's "Don't Fall," which is a creature feature. Her segment is wildly popular, though.

Yes, what I liked about "The Box" is you create dread without showing it.

That's Jack Ketchum. And people accuse him of being a lazy storyteller. That was my opportunity to direct an episode of "The Twilight Zone." Making "The Box" for me was inspired by "Twilight Zone" and Rod Serling's "Night Gallery." Aesthetics wise, I was probably inspired by Kubrick.

What scares you?

People. Other people scare me. Monsters are not real. Vampires and werewolves are not going to get me. We are living in a climate where women have a real fear of losing their [rights]. One filmmaker missed the premiere at Sundance to go march on Washington. This film can't help but be politicized. I'm afraid of the movement Trump is mobilizing; that is genuinely scary to me.

Fictional horror is hard for me to get scared by lately. As I said, "Enemy" and "Under the Skin" are puzzles, and require effort and repeat viewing to unravel their complexity.

What is missing in the horror genre?

Women are missing! From all genres. Fifty percent of film school graduates are women. And more than 50percent of ticket buyers are women. But only 7percent of directors are women. This is a problem! There is no easy solution. "XX" is our humble contribution to progress. It's created out of necessity to contribute to the genre. It's not a gimmick; it's an attempt at progress.

Horror films can often be metaphors for other things. There are ethical dimensions at play in some torture porn the "Saw" series, for example, which I love. What can you say about the messages in genre films?

There's not much deep thinking in the "Saw" films. The original was a great concept. The sequels were more fun, a blood ballet of violence. Horror films have always been a springboard for our cultural anxieties. In the 1950s we were afraid of different things: things coming from the sky, communism, alien invasions and loss of personal autonomy.

In the 1960s we became more van cleef gold clover necklace copy afraid of each other. And in the 1970s it was "Texas Chain Saw Massacre," where you are a stranger in your own landscape, totally trapped in a completely difference place that may be only 100 miles away. Those films are a sublimation of all the shit we're afraid of. Let's see what comes out of the Trump administration.
