Storm chasers clear Barnegat Bay of debris from Hurricane Sandy

Piloting their boat methodically back and forth in grid pattern as if on a search and rescue mission in Barnegat Bay, crew members from CrowderGulf eye the screen that shows blobby underwater shapes.

They note the locations, and in a few days, a barge and crew from the Alabama firm pull the mystery items from the cloudy water.

These are a different breed of storm chasers, the crews who clean up waterways after the devastation, snatching out of the bay what Hurricane Sandy dumped into it more than four months ago. Now, a week into work that is expected to take a couple months, they already pulled everything from gnarled trees to a Mercedes Benz out of the bay.

"After a storm hits like this, a community is totally devastated as far as public health and safety," said Buddy Young, operations manager for CrowderGulf. "It very, very important to get things open again, to get people back in their homes, to get the economy going again."

Whether it a snowstorm, ice storm or tornado, Young and his team have cleaned up after it. Young, who hails from Alabama, said the firm has worked virtually every major storm that occurred in the United States since Hurricane Camille hit the Gulf Coast region in 1969. Young said the crane operators are so good that one actually delivered on a promise to pick up an egg without breaking it.

While two boats from local companies pick up debris floating in the water and on shore, six of CrowderGulf boats and barges move through the bay, divided into zones, to locate and retrieve the submerged items detected days earlier by sonar.

In Mantoloking alone, 58 buildings and 60 cars were washed into the bay. So far, most of the 1,200 yards of debris collected turned fake van cleef & arpels bracelet out to be trees or whole docks or decks. Nick Pratt, director of water operations for CrowderGulf, said the side scan sonar can get so close that it can pick up images as small as 10 inches. Workers can sometimes figure out what an item is from its shape on the screen, but they never know for sure until the crane plucks them out.

On Monday, one of those items happened to be Becky Wert Schmierer black 1993 Mercedes Benz 400.

Schmierer, who lives two houses south of the major ocean breach that wiped out the road and swept away homes around the Mantoloking Bridge in Mantoloking, said she was surprised by the find.

Before Sandy hit, she had parked her car at Van imitation clover bracelet van cleef and arpels Sciver Realtors, where she is a broker, at the base of the bridge higher ground than her own driveway. Her office building is still nowhere to be found, but CrowderGulf discovered her car in the middle of the bay. Her 100 year old home is badly damaged, but still standing.

"I was surprised it was one of the first ones pulled out of the bay," she said. "I so glad they starting to get things out of the bay."

During a typical day, the barges and boats scatter throughout the bay to collect debris. When their decks are full, they return to the southern shore on the Brick side of the Mantoloking Bridge where a crane loads the haul into giant roll off containers. Once full, the containers are trucked to the Ocean County landfill. Hazardous items, such as refrigerators containing Freon or oil or gas cans, are set aside for special disposal. Boats are reported to New Jersey State Police, which keeps a database of registrations. And cars, like Schmierer are reported to local police.

CrowderGulf partnered with New Jersey based Matrix New van cleef and arpels bracelets imitation World Engineering to clean up the state waterways. The two companies first partnered after the BP oil spill in the Gulf, Young said.

CrowderGulf is one of three firms hired to clear the state waterways. Monitors verify their work so they can be reimbursed by the federal government. The value of the contract depends on how much debris is pulled from the water, Young said.

State Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin said he wants to have three quarters of all the waterway debris removed by June 1, before heavy use by recreational boaters, .

"We identified the debris problem immediately after Sandy and quickly addressed the land portion of it," Martin said. "Now we are taking the next important step, tackling debris and removing it from our coastal waters, tidal rivers, bays, channels, and streams."
