Sport Captain Says Discipline as Athlete Helped Her Get Good Grades
Boojraj didn't start playing any of these sports until going to Martin Van Buren High School. The senior originally joined the teams just to keep busy. Though her schedule is packed, Boojraj says she owes her good grades to the discipline she learned as an athlete.
"It encouraged me to actually get better at doing my schoolwork, because you have to be eligible in order to play these sports," she says. "And it really made me actually want to get a higher grade."
"She's really like a 'cross your Ts and dot your Is' kind of person," says Zoltan Laar, Boojraj's social studies teacher. "She makes me want to bring that same kind of commitment and detail orientation to my own works."
One of the biggest inspirations in Boojraj's life is her developmentally disabled brother. Because of him, she wants to go medical school.
"I really learned how to help others, basically, how to get that sympathy for everyone else," she says. "If I see someone who has a disability, instead of just standing there and watching them, I actually want to try to help them."
