Act on water security issue now

Water quality and modelling specialist Dr Zaki Zainudin said that the frequency of water disruption was worrying, especially since it also af Putrajaya, van cleef and arpels knock off bracelet alhambra, the administrative capital of the nation. On the recurring problems of contamination at Sungai Semenyih dam, he said the dam was around 50km away from the treatment plant and the river, which passes through the town, was susceptible to contamination from various sources along the way.He proposed three options, van cleef rose gold replica bracelet, firstly to build protective canals or pipes for the water to stream directly to the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant from the dam.The second is to build a treatment plant near the dam and supply the water directly to existing water supply networks which are already protected and the third is to upgrade the treatment plant with advance water treatment technology.Regarding the water contamination at the treatment plant, sweet alhambra replica bracelet, Dr Zaki advised those at the plant to test and look be conventional contaminants such as ammonia and manganese which have been the usual cause of water disruption.advice is that if the odour of the contaminant is a solvent and has a pungent smell, then maybe they should test for hydrocarbons as they give off a pungent smell, van cleef rose gold fake bracelet, he said.He added that plant maintenance must also be in tip top condition and all probable loose ends must be addressed until the source of contamination was identified.may also be worthwhile for the treatment plant to assess and review its own treatment system and processes just to be sure it not compounding the problem, Dr Zaki said.

10 ways to beat the taxman honestly

But while few of us are wealthy enough to justify moving assets to an offshore tax haven, employing armies of accountants or using complex trust structures, there are far simpler, and perfectly legal, ways of reducing our spiralling tax bills.

Critics have argued that the politicians seem to be blurring the line between tax evasion and tax avoidance. The former involves breaking tax rules and is, of course, illegal. The latter involves sticking to the rules but planning your finances carefully so you don't pay more tax than you have to. This could be as simple as using tax efficient savings plans such as Isas, pensions and Premium Bonds, or utilising legitimate tax reliefs efficiently. And despite the rhetoric, Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, was forced to concede that middle class taxpayers were "perfectly entitled" to use accountants to lower their tax bills.

In fact, it could be argued that we need to be more vigilant about such measures: many families are feeling the strain on their finances thanks to increased National Insurance contributions, rising inflation, the new 50p top tax rate and the fact that many also face additional tax demands, thanks to HM Revenue Customs' computer errors.

Follow our suggestions below to make sure you keep your tax bills to the minimum.

THINK AS A FAMILY, NOT AS AN INDIVIDUAL

We all pay tax on our own individual earnings and assets. But thanks to a number of reliefs and allowances offered to married couples and civil partners, it is possible to reduce the total amount of tax you pay as a couple if you arrange your finances correctly. This, though, works only if one partner pays a lower tax rate. Frank Nash of accountants Blick Rothenberg recommended switching income producing assets, such as shares, van cleef replica alhambra bracelet, investment funds, bank and building society accounts and jointly owned property, into the name of the partner who pays the lower rate of tax. This way, you pay less tax on dividends, rent and savings interest. "The general rule that jointly owned income is taxed 50/50 can be altered by making a specific election where there has been a genuine outright gift of assets, van cleef arpels replica bracelet," Mr Nash said. If you are unmarried and transferring assets, this could potentially trigger a capital gains tax (CGT) bill.

MAKE THE MOST OF 'JOINT' OWNERSHIPS

For assets likely to trigger a capital gain (such as a property or shares) it may be worth owning them jointly. Much will depend on how much annual income they generate, when you are likely to sell them and the size of the potential gain. But if a buy to let home, for example, is held in joint names, you will be able to use both spouses' CGT allowance. Gary Heynes, a partner at accountants Baker Tilly, said: "In this way up to 20,200 of capital gains can be realised before you pay tax, rather than just 10,van cleef bracelet knock off alhambra,100."

Basic rate taxpayers pay CGT at 18pc, rather than the standard 28pc rate. But couples need to be careful. When calculating CGT, the gain realised is added to the income earned in that tax year; if these two combined push you into the higher tax bracket you will pay the 28pc rate on the gain. People realising "lumpy" assets, such as a second home, are usually better off jointly owning the asset to take advantage of two CGT allowances, as in practice either partner, regardless of earnings, often pays the higher CGT rate.

CHECK YOUR TAX CODE

The problems with HMRC's computers have led to thousands of people paying the wrong tax through their tax code. Even if you are not one of the six million taxpayers receiving a letter saying tax has been over or underpaid, van cleef knock off clover bracelet, it's worth checking your code. Older readers should check they are getting appropriate higher personal allowances. Those over 65 can earn 9,490 before tax is charged, rising to 9,640 for those 75 and over. The standard personal allowance is 6,475.

PLAN AHEAD

There are a number of little known exemptions allowing you to reduce future inheritance tax bills. Everyone has an annual gift exemption worth 3,000, which removes this money from your estate regardless of how long you live. In addition, grandparents can give 2,500 to each grandchild who marries; parents can give 5,000. Wealthier taxpayers can also make regular gifts out of income, which will also be IHT free. Mike Warburton of accountants Grant Thornton said: "These can be paid monthly, annually or even termly, if, for example, it was to help pay school fees. Get your relative to write a letter stating that it is their intention to make this a regular gift from their excess income. Investors can make a bigger dent in their tax bill by putting their money in an enterprise investment scheme (EIS) or venture capital trust (VCT). Both are designed to encourage private investment in smaller companies.

Mr Heynes said: "Taxpayers can put up to 500,000 in certain small companies under the EIS rules. Buying shares in a qualifying company gives a reduction in tax of 20pc, so a 10,000 investment means a 2,000 reduction in that person's tax bill." The maximum investment therefore wipes 100,000 off your tax bill. The shares are free from capital gains tax and inheritance tax.

You can invest in a wider range of shares through a VCT. This gives a tax reduction of 30pc of the amount invested, up to 200,000. A 10,000 investment would knock 3,000 off your tax bill, the maximum investment cutting your tax by 60,000. Mr Warburton said it could make sense to increase borrowing on a buy to let property and use this money to reduce the main mortgage paid on your residential home, where no tax relief is granted.

He said: "This has to be done properly. I would always recommend opening a business bank account and making sure all rental money and expenses go in and out of this account. But you can use any profits made on the rental business to reduce your own mortgage, which would be a tax efficient way of structuring your borrowing."

People can borrow only up to the original value of the property when they started letting it.

GO OFFSHORE

There is often little tax advantage in using one of the popular offshore regions such as the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Luxembourg or Liechtenstein for those resident in Britain.

Taxpayers here are required to declare their worldwide earnings, including interest paid on overseas bank accounts. And thanks to new data sharing arrangements, HMRC can now access information on these accounts.

But some offshore bonds may still be beneficial to higher rate taxpayers, as they essentially allow people to defer tax. These are complex products and often expensive, so seek independent advice.

5 Comic Book Movies Way Worse Than 'Batman and Robin'

Steve Rogers is a young artist who enjoys wallowing in self pity as much as he enjoys remembering his far superior father (which is to say, very much). His father was a patriotic government agent during the war who, due to his dedication and bravery, was given the nickname "Captain America." He also developed a "super steroid," which seems less brave, but people went with it because they had already gone to the trouble of giving him that nickname.

When young, whiny Steve suffers an accident and is given his father's special steroid during surgery. Not only does the steroid save his life, it gives him super strength and speed, which he uses, at the behest of the government, to fight evil.

Oh, but instead of serving in the war (like his father, and the Steve Rogers in the comics), he uses his super speed to buy a giant cargo fan and a moderately fast motorcycle and rides around for a good portion of the movie, briefly pausing only at the end of the film to foil a random terrorist plot that involves hiding a bomb somewhere.

Steve Rogers from the comics was an artist at heart, sure, but he was also prepared to fight for his country even before he was loaded up with super steroids. He was a superhero who could have genuinely been considered a true hero pre powers.

"I'll tell you what Red Skull hurt the most: my feelings.

One of the other great things about Captain America was that he willingly volunteered to take the super serum, because it meant he would be better at doing what he loved (punching Nazis). In this movie, the serum is given to Rogers without his consent, and he reluctantly decides to fight crime after it turns out he has superpowers. Basically, everything that made Steve Rogers honorable and respectable was removed and replaced with. art? A helmet? We don't even know. A see through shield?

Now, the good Captain's transportation doesn't really come up too often in the comics, so we can't say the filmmakers behind this movie screwed it up. Still, we feel fairly secure in the belief that he would not roll around in a blue GMC Van that shoots an almost useless motorcycle out of the back.

And finally, the costume. agent who is qualified to do anything.

The plot is painfully and needlessly drawn out. Helicarrier in order to diffuse the threat which turns out to be that the children of his old nemesis have a deadly virus. thinks a one eyed, cigar chomping, retired David Hasselhoff would be better at stopping it than a giant flying helicarrier.

The plan falls just outside the borders of "too retarded to be believable" but lands somewhere in "just retarded enough to work" territory, so Nick Fury saves the day.

The weirdest thing about this movie is that it shouldn't have sucked. It was written by David S. Goyer, the guy who wrote The Dark Knight. The biggest non Hasselhoff related problem is it couldn't decide if it was a serious drama or a high camp movie, and it failed at both. And the biggest Hasselhoff related problem is that David Hasselhoff was in it.

Man, we have used this picture in a TON of articles already, and we don't even care.

This one is a little tricky because it's available for purchase. After Goyer struck gold with Batman Begins, Best Buy bought the distribution rights and started selling the DVD. It's still available, for the hardcore fan who has to have everything related to Marvel, and also hates himself.

Instead of saying "Of course not murder murder murder," The Punisher agrees to help, eventually teaming up with Franco, the head of the mafia, to raid the Yakuza headquarters and rescue Franco's son.

Because Franco is, of course, still evil, he decides to, of course, turn on Punisher and he, of course, loses. The child is left fatherless, The Punisher learned nothing and the audience wasted 10 bucks.

The Punisher's costume is simple. It's a friggin' black t shirt with a friggin' skull on it. That's the Punisher shirt. You can pick it up an Kohls, for Christ's sake. If you're making a Punisher movie that doesn't put Punisher in the Punisher shirt, you are making a very bad movie.

Having Castle team up with the mob bosses who killed his family is a cardinal sin. What made The Punisher of the comics so compelling was his obsessively stringent moral code; he sees only in black and white. He takes it to the extreme, he can't be reasoned with, van cleef & arpels alhambra knock off bracelet, he can't be controlled and we fucking love him for it. By the end, we were hoping it was part of an elaborate plot to make Franco watch him molest his son. We suppose it would have been a touch dark, but at least it would have been a freaking Punishment.

Thankfully, real comic book movies were there to overshadow the release of The Punisher. When it came out in 1989, DC released Tim Burton's Batman, and the people rejoiced. Strange (1978)

Our world is constantly under threats of a magical nature and the man protecting us from these threats is a man known as the Sorcerer Supreme. The current Supreme of the Earth is an old man called Thomas Linmer who can basically do everything that Obi Wan Kenobi can do, except use a lightsaber (so who gives a shit?).

Linmer, van cleef copy bracelets, for a while, just hangs out in his Greenwich Village mansion, being magic and whatnot, when he is disturbed by a threat from his past, a sorceress called Morgan Le Fay. To defeat her, bracelet alhambra replica van cleef, Linmer takes porno stash clad psychiatrist and heir to the Sorcerer Supreme Throne, Dr. Steven Strange, under his wing to teach him,van cleef clover knock off bracelet, you know, magic. They use magic to defeat Morgan, Strange becomes the new sorcerer and refuses to shave his Holmesian mustache.

This plot is as far from Dr. Strange's actual origin story as you can get. In the comics, Strange is a cocky surgeon who gets in a car accident and loses his fabulous dexterity. He then travels to the Himalayas to find a hermit who might be able to help him get his job back, and it turns out the hermit is the current Sorcerer Supreme. Strange decides that this is way too much like Batman Begins and wants to leave, but can't due to a blizzard, so he decides to stick around and learn magic. The film replaces "learning magic in the Himalayas" with "learning magic as a psychiatrist in some dude's study." They also decided that the cocky surgeon who lost everything before gaining magic powers was a less compelling protagonist than a boring shrink who just gets born into magicdom.

Also this happens at one point. Not sure if that matters.

Also, Dr. Strange probably doesn't deserve his own movie. He's just not interesting enough. Still, the creators took a character who was inherently boring and made him more boring, dressed him up like John Holmes and made a shitty movie. We have simple rules when it comes to movies. If you're going to make a movie with superheroes, make it exciting and interesting, and if you're going to make a movie with porn stashes, make it full of titties and funk music. This film fails at both.

'A smile a day keeps the doctor away'

Getting old is not always easy. Moving to a residential care home, because living on your own becomes more difficult, or is not even possible any more, is not one of the moments in life that you look forward to. For residential care homes like Humanitas, the question is, what can such a residential care home do for the elderly?

Of course, providing appropriate healthcare is one thing, but what added value can Humanitas give the elderly? Humanitas has three main values that they want to build their environment upon. Those values are love, together and positive.

Humanitas wants to create a warm, cosy and rich community, replica rolex submariner 5513, where the elderly can find excitement and a smile every day. Humanitas should be a place one wants to belong to, a place where one wants to live. But how could this environment be created?

Humanitas felt that this environment could not be created with only the current professional staff. The professionals are primarily concerned with exercising their profession and less with the little extra things that can add that extra value to the residential care home. It should be more like good neighbours who care about each other.

That is where the idea of students as residents came up. At this moment in time, students in the Netherlands often have difficulties finding affordable rooms. Also, due to changes in long term care, the vacancy rate in nursing homes is rather high.

Placing students and the elderly together would create a dynamic that benefits both parties. For students this is advantageous because now they can live in a place for free and have a warm place to come home to. For the elderly this is advantageous because the youngsters are around to bring positive energy, life and party stories, a little help and attention.

See the full story, My 93 year old Flatmate.

We started with one student, not exactly knowing what it would bring. It was just a try out to see whether this concept would bring what we expected it to bring.

Even though not all the elderly residents were unanimously positive about the idea of a youngster being their new neighbour, the results were astonishing, resulting in six students living with 150 elderly at this moment.

The students are energetic, friendly, helpful and often make just a different chat with the elderly than volunteers or professionals do. This adds so much value to the lives of the elderly in Humanitas.

The main directive for the students is to be a good neighbour. In exchange for 30 hours of voluntary work, the students get a room for free.

The concept only works when students understand the meaning of being a good neighbour. They should have a feeling for elderly people, they should pay attention to the elderly and should be able to adjust to the rhythm of the elderly.

It can be said that the 30 hours of voluntary work is just a matter of speech, replica submariner rolex, as those 30 hours are not monitored. With this project, the culture of the organisation has changed from control based to a more trust based organisation. Trust is a key factor here.

The students live their lives in Humanitas. They study, party, vintage rolex submariner fake, come home at 5am or sleep until 1pm. They have friends coming over. They cook alone or together with students or the elderly. Also, they are showing their own initiatives to organise things for the elderly.

An example is one of the female students who organised a wellness evening for all the residents on her floor. The result: elderly with purple nail polish or their feet hanging in a hot tub. But most importantly, elderly grinning from ear to ear.

Other examples of activities organised for the elderly were a graffiti workshop and a street dance workshop. Elderly discovered that they had talents they did not know about.

As a result, a special relationship arises between the 'young' students and the 'old' residents. Mrs Middelburg, one of the residents who is part of the client board, said that the students even became 'like grandchildren' for her.

The project of students living in Humanitas, who are being a good neighbour for the elderly, has been running for several years now. The outcome is astonishing and the benefits are uncountable.

Living together with people from different ages, with different perspectives, ladies rolex submariner fake, brings joy and excitement. It may be a part of a bigger movement, the motion from an exclusive, isolated society, towards a more inclusive/integrated one.

The project of students living with the elderly received much acclaim from news outlets, such as the BBC, Al Jazeera, the Independent, NRC Next and EenVandaag. All in all, over 30 different countries were interested in this concept and published about it, ranging from newspaper articles to interviews and videos.

In Helsinki, the first home, based on this idea of community living and shared interests (after visiting Humanitas in Deventer), has opened their doors. In Brazil an architect student has made students living amongst elderly the theme of her graduation.

So, the concept of students living together with the elderly is a concept in which both parties benefit. Both, the young and old, are adding value to each others lives. A smile a day for everyone, including the elderly, is what should be aimed for worldwide.

5 things not to miss in the Center Vietnam

During the era of 1802 1945, Vietnam was ruled by the Nguyen Dynasty. This was Vietnam's last ruling Royal family. There were in all 13 kings in different times. As a mark of tradition the rulers built tombs of their own name around the palace. These tombs are famously known as the Royal Tombs of Hue. Though there were 13 rulers but only seven tombs are found in the site. Due to various only seven of the rulers had tombs built after their name. These tombs form the architectural wonder of Hue and definitely a reason to visit the place.

The seven imperial tombs of Hue are built on a hilly region on the southwestern front of the Citadel, another famous monument of Hue. The kings having their presence in the form of the tombs are Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Duc Duc, Dong Khanh and Khai Dinh. These tombs were constructed during their respective reigns and were named after them too. These were very aesthetically built monuments showcasing the taste of the respective rulers.

The tombs showcase the statute of the kings and are built in a way which perfectly synchronizes with the harmony that strings all the monuments in the same tune. The array of tombs presents a picture perfect of poetic setting in the lap of nature. The components which were incorporated in every of the constructions were: : walls, triple gate (Tam Quan Gate), Salutation Court, Stele House, temples, lakes and ponds, pavilions, gardens, and finally the tomb.

In the year 1957, the Royal Tombs of Hue were enlisted as World's Wonders. Unfortunately most of the artifacts are now stolen by the French and the crooks. It is really unfortunate for Hue for losing one of its wonders. Still today Hue has retained its glory and has been regarded as "a masterpiece of urban poetry" by Mr. Amadou Mahtar M'Bow, the Director General of UNESCO in 1991.

Some of the tombs of the rulers are:

The most majestic is that of Emperor Minh Mang, rolex oyster perpetual submariner date replica, a staunch follower of Confucianism with many wives, concubines and a small army of children. Planned by the Emperor and built shortly after his death, it is opulent and exotic, and laid out in formal Chinese style.

With the possible exception of Khai Dinh's monument, no other tomb approaches the level of unity of the elements of Minh Mang's tomb. Its layout and symmetry draws the eye naturally towards the main features, and the architectural balance blends the elements into a pleasing whole.

The tomb of Tu Duc, the 'poet Emperor', is set in an elegant garden with a magnificent lake and pavilion complex. The centrepiece of the tomb is simplicity itself despite the lavish opulence of his reign (it's really just a monument he was buried elsewhere to thwart grave robbers).

Despite his cultural pursuits and desire to achieve a humble lifestyle, it was under Tu Duc that the Nguyen court reached its zenith of lavish opulence. Tu Duc withdrew into court life, seemingly indifferent to the people he ruled, and the brutal treatment of the three thousand artisans and workers pressed into service to build his tomb.

In complete contrast to Emperor Tu Duc's stylish creation, the tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh is appears at first to be an unprepossessing concrete construction. Its interest lies within in an uneasy combination of Vietnamese and European features and the use of fragments of ceramics and glass for decoration.

Nevertheless, Khai Dinh's tomb is of great interest as an architectural watershed, the cusp between the influences of a Chinese past and a Western oriented future. The lavish embellishments inside the tomb come as a shock after the grimy and rather sombre faade and courtyard. A golden effigy of the Emperor seated on his throne under a magnificent cement canopy extravagantly decorated with ceramic fragments could be regarded as a masterpiece.

The UNESCO Council appraised Vietnamese royal music in the following terms: "Vietnamese royal music represents an elegant and refined music. It deals with the music performed in the imperial courts and on different anniversaries, religious festivals, and on such particular occasions. Of the different categories developed in Vietnam, only the royal music was national."

Nha nhac (Vietnamese royal music) and its principles came to Vietnam under the Ho Dynasty (1400 1407). The Ho Dynasty, however, only existed for a short time, so nha nhac rapidly fell into oblivion. In 1427,rolex submariner womens fake, Le Loi defeated the Chinese Ming invaders and liberated the country. However, nha nhac only began to develop in the reign of King Le Thanh Tong (1460 1497) and reached its peak under the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 1945).

Nha nhac is genre of scholarly music.

From now on, nha nhac will have opportunities to preserve, develop and popularize to the public, fake ladies rolex submariner, inside and outside the country.

The Cham People were an indigenous race who inhabited in the coastal regions in mostly central Vietnam way back in 192 BC. The tribe was heavily influenced by Indian culture, religion and even the language. The Cham Museum in Danang is located in Vietnam's 4th largest city at the point where two streets of Trung Nu Vuong and Bach Dang intersect. The Cham Museum in Danang has the largest and the most voluminous collection of Cham art in the world. This is truly a unique feat because the Cham civilization were later replaced by other prominent ones; and those of the Cham who remained, later converted to Islam.

The location of the Cham Museum in Danang is very apt; because the Danang region was the capital of the civilization. This is clearly evident in the architectural style of the museum. While building the museum in 1915, the French Far East Research Center in Vietnam, who were the financial sponsors, kept the Cham architectural patterns in mind. So the museum is adorned with thin, gentle and linear patterns. These patterns are particularly special because they symbolically represent the dominance of Matriarchy. Among the exhibits in the Cham Museum in Danang, are some 300 carvings and statues crafted out of different materials including terracotta. Once they formed a part of the Cham temples and towers. Among these statues are also animal's figures as there are humans.

6 Real Innocent People Famous Movies Made Look Horrible

Hearst, Biff Tannen took his cues from Donald Trump, rolex submariner womens replica, and the stars of Twilight drew inspiration from some discarded planks of wood left beside a construction site. Sometimes, though, fake rolex submariner date, these fictional inspirations take unfortunate dramatic licenses, enshrining real life figures in the annals of cinema in a craptastic light.

From famous people to random dudes, no one is safe from being turned into a major dickhead by Hollywood long after their death. That's exactly what happened to .

Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen Brothers' drama about the folk music scene of the 1960s, was acclaimed for its eccentric characters, original songs, and the closest we'll ever get to a Star Wars movie where Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron put aside their differences to jam with Justin Timberlake.

CBS Films

Episode IX: Kylo Ren Gets Shot Off Into Outer Space spoilers.

For the character of Llewyn Davis, the Coens took their inspiration from Dave Van Ronk, a legendary folk musician who, like Davis, played the New York coffee house circuit. They straight up took scenes from Van Ronk's biography and put them in the movie, such as when he tries to rejoin the merchant marines but realizes he's missing his seaman's papers or his painful audition for the '60s folk equivalent of Simon Cowell. On top of that, Van Ronk had an album titled Inside Dave Van Ronk, whose cover looked like this:

CBS Films

They were worried Dave Van Ronk fans wouldn't get all the other references if this didn't have the right font.

The only problem? Despite the fact that the two share so much in common, the Coens made their character a self centered douchenozzle whose talent for folk music is surpassed by his knack for mooching and womanizing. While the late Van Ronk was a friendly figure who encouraged and influenced young up and comers like Bob Dylan and went on to have a long career, his thinly disguised film version is a pathetic sad sack who clearly went nowhere.

CBS Films

Also, The Force Awakens was but one man's depressed hallucinations, and BB 8 was a cat.

This was a problem for at least some of Van Ronk's friends, who were unhappy to see the iconography of his life's work attributed to some fictional jackass.

Leaving aside the movie's fictional leads, Titanic is chock full of real life figures, from socialite Molly Brown, rolex oyster perpetual submariner date replica, to Captain Edward Smith, to even some of the peripheral characters. Take the guy in the chef's uniform swilling booze from a flask you may not remember him because his presence is somewhat usurped by the film's true star, "Propeller Guy."

The moment plays almost as comedic, as if this poor schlub might as well fill his belly with Jim Beam as long as people are pinballing off of propellers. Well, it turns out that the inspiration for the character, Charles Joughin, was far more than a mere county fair caricature of Nick Nolte he was a goddamn hero."My name may be tarnished, but at least I wasn't wearing eight pounds of makeup like Billy Zane."

It's true that Joughin, the ship's baker, was drinking that night, but he actually started before the ship hit the iceberg, while he was off duty and had every right to get shitfaced. Once disaster struck, he organized the distribution of bread to the lifeboats and even refused his own spot on a boat in favor of women and children. If all that wasn't enough, submariner rolex replica, he then started hurling deck chairs into the water not in a drunken Axl Rose esque display, but as a way to provide people with flotation devices. Amazingly, the baker survived by clinging to an overturned boat, which some have attributed to his getting hammered beforehand. While that doesn't really make sense, that the hooch may have kept him calm where others panicked. George Clooney stars as the boat captain who sadly could have changed careers if he'd only realized that he had movie star good looks beneath that mangled baseball cap.

The Perfect Stubble swoon

The movie was based on a book, which itself was based on a true story and it may have massaged some of the finer details. Even the heroes, that rag tag group of fishermen, weren't accurately represented. In the movie, they decide to endure the storm because they're in financial danger of losing the boat and need the money their catch will bring in. They could have just gone home and not gotten caught up in any storm, perfect or otherwise, but Captain Tyne (Clooney) goads his crew like a schoolyard bully.

11 Rivers Forced Underground

This story is part of a special National Geographic News series on global water issues.

Rivers arethe lifeblood of many plant, animal, and human communities. Yet many of the world's rivers have been dammed, degraded, polluted, and overdrawn at alarming rates.

Some of the world's great rivers, from the Colorado to the Indus, don't always reach their ends because people have diverted so much water for agriculture, industry, and municipal uses. Other rivers have been completely covered over by development, as people attempted to "tame" nature by ending flooding and maximizing usable land area.

But what happens to once thriving freshwater ecosystems when the rivers they depend on are entombed in sewer pipes beneath layers of concrete and soil? Few species can make the transition to subterranean living. Ironically, it was often rivers and streams that attracted people in the first place, but those very sources of life can fall victim to the expanding concrete jungle.

This was the case in the late 1800s for Sunswick Creek in the Queens section of New York City. Appearing on maps in the 1870s, Sunswick Creek was soon completely covered over. Now, it exists only as a meager flow through buried sewer like pipes, as documented in this photo by Steve Duncan.

Duncan notes that the burial process appears to have occurred in multiple phases, based on his explorations of the dank channels.

Tibbetts Brook starts just north of the Bronx and then flows into the borough's leafy Van Cortlandt Park, where it fills a small lake. Thanks to historic development, the brook is then forced underground at Tibbett Avenue.

It then flows under the Bronx through a large, double channeled brick sewer until it reaches the Harlem River Ship Canal, which was dug in the 1890s, shaping the border with Manhattan.

Before development, the Lenape Native Americans who lived in the area took advantage of the brook's freshwater and plentiful fish and game, replica cartier chain, which included muskrats, raccoons, rabbits, skunks, and many species of birds. The Lenape called the stream Mosholu, meaning "smooth or small stones."

In the 1690s, property owner Jacobus Van Cortlandt built the small dam that created the lake, in order to power a sawmill and gristmill. He also cut ice from the lake in winter to sell to locals. The city of New York acquired the land that became Van Cortlandt Park in 1888.

Today only a small part of Tibbetts Brook remains above ground. Runoff of toxins from the surrounding city remains a problem for water quality. In 1961, pollution seeped into the stream, leading to the death of thousands of fish in the lake.

A tributary of the mighty Hudson River, the Sawmill River flows about 23 miles (37 kilometers) from Chappaqua, New York, to Yonkers, just north of New York City. Since the early 1900s, the last 2,000 feet (600 meters) of the river have been entombed in a flume underneath downtown Yonkers.

The river was covered gradually. First, bridges were built across it. Over time, the bridges got bigger and closer together, as Yonkers experienced rapid industrialization. Eventually, the river was completely covered over, and it has historically suffered from pollution and intense development.

In 2007, a $34 million plan was approved to expose, or "daylight" much of the buried section of the Sawmill River, as part of a $3 billion redevelopment project for Yonkers. This will include a new city park.

Scientists hope that exposing the river to daylight will help restore it to a better state of health. A BioBlitz was conducted in 2009 to assess the health of the watershed. Participants counted eight species of fish, though more than 20 were counted by scientists in the past. Army Corps of Engineers diverted the Park River beneath Hartford, Connecticut, in what was one of the largest and most expensive projects the Corps had tackled up to that point. The Park had connected the city's west side to the larger Connecticut River, though it had long been abused as a dumping ground for sewage and industrial waste.

Long called Hog River because of its stench, the Park was buried 30 to 50 feet below the surface, where it still runs under the state capitol and main public library.

Today, a few intrepid urban explorers paddle canoes down the buried river. John Kulick of Huck Finn Adventures, who has guided float trips through the subterranean section, told the New York Times he has seeneels, replica cartier necklace, carp, and stripers in the dark water. Kulick joked, perhaps at least half seriously, that a burst of water gurgled into the river because "someone flushed a toilet."

The Neglinnaya River (also called theNeglinka River) used to flow across Moscow from north to south, until it was buried underground in 4.7 miles (7.5 kilometers) of tunnels. Today it drains into theMoskva River via two openings.

The Kremlin was built on a hill west of theNeglinnaya River, with a moat filled from its channel. Over time residents grew weary of the river's flooding, so in 1792, the city diverted its course into a new canal, and filled in the original bed. After a devastating fire in 1812,replica chain cartier, the river became heavily polluted, so engineers covered it over with a vault.

In subsequent decades, additional tunnels were built or expanded.

A number of watercourses through London were buried over the centuries, including the River Westbourne, which flowed from Hampstead through Hyde Park to Sloane Square and into the River Thames at Chelsea.

The River Westbourne had been an important source of drinking water for the growing city, and conduits were built for that purpose in 1437 and 1439. However, by the 19th century, replica cartier love necklace with diamonds, the water had become too filthy to use for anything except a sewer.

6 Popular Children's Books That Teach Kids Horrible Lessons, replica cartier gold love necklace price

As only buzzkills like us would want to point out, some children's books seem to intentionally traumatize kids with hard adult themes of vice and dysfunction. But those are the exception, not the rule. What about all those other cutesy, cartoony little picture books you find in the beanbag section of the library? The ones that aren't actively teaching kids to idolize crack dealers or mock the disabled? Those are OK, right? Apparently not: Even some of the biggest names in the industry are practically seeding our children's brains with impending personality disorders. Books like .

". but if you flush that Rolex, I'll skin you alive."

In this best selling picture book, an impish boy tears apart every room in the house and runs his mother ragged. But that's OK, because when she sees him lying there sleeping peacefully, he's impossible not to love. From newborn through the toddler years and beyond, Mommy always finds a chance to sneak into her boy's room, cradle him in her arms and sing a lullaby. Because he will always be her little baby.

"But if he keeps peeing on the carpet, we might have to have him put down."

Mommy won't ask what that brown stuff is, even though she knows it hasn't rained in days.

For example, here: We're past the hugging stage now, right? We're pretty sure the tape in his Walkman cassette player is Run DMC's Raising Hell, and we're almost positive he's going to masturbate into that catcher's mitt later (he's a 13 year old boy; he's pretty much going to masturbate into everything at least once). So maybe he's getting a little bit old for this stealth coddling stuff, right?

She washes out that catcher's mitt and lovingly places it on her face at night.

No? OK, that's cool. He might start associating his mother's perfume with his wet dreams about Samantha Fox, but it's not like a few mommy issues will turn every kid into Ed Grimley or anyth

That shirt has "fat Elvis" all over it.

Huh. Well, he's not off to a galloping start, is he? Your high school age son is wearing loafers and doing a Sha Na Na fantasy number in front of the cat and his almost certainly deceased friend (human beings do not bend like that, nor do they possess terrifying visages that lifeless). Maybe it's time to lay off the covert cuddles.

At school, he finds himself licking girls' faces. He's been suspended twice.

Or hey, you could also sneak into his bedroom on . on . all fours like the creepy girl from The Ring. Jesus, what would you do if he woke up right at this moment? He would never stop screaming.

And what are you going to do when he eventually grows up and moves out of the house? Strap a ladder to the roof of your car, drive across town, break into his house and sneak into his bedroom there, too?

"Sheila? Sheila . not again. I want a divorce."

Whoa, replica cartier love necklace, wait a minute. She's not seriously .?

He paws at the windows of nursing homes and whispers "Soon."

Wow. Just wow. That's so balls out crazy stalker core that even your mentally imbalanced son's bizarre Bed Rodent is trying to escape that mise en scene. So remember: Sleep soundly, kids, because the bellowing furnace of Mommy's uterus will smother every bad dream inside your head .

Kiddie book mack daddies Stan and Jan Berenstain have sold hundreds of millions of Berenstain Bear books over the decades. With roughly a blazillion titles in the series, the Berenstains were bound to throw in at least one blood soaked reboot full of violence and retribution, if only to keep the series fresh for their ever maturing fan base. The Berenstain Bears and the Bully is that book.

"There's a talking time and a face eating time. This is a face eating time."

After getting beaten up by a playground bully named Tuffy, darling little Sister Bear nurses cruel revenge fantasies that are a bit excessive, replica necklace cartier, even for the hyperbolic imagination of a slighted child. We hated bullies, too, Sister Bear, but most of our fantasies involved either whupping their ass in front of our karate mentor (a proud Jean Claude Van Damme) or else besting them in some kind of ski race in front of our ski mentor (also a proud Jean Claude Van Damme). But Little Sister ain't no punk: She's going to stab the bully with lances, bust her head open with morning stars, crush her with tanks or just straight up kamikaze a plane into her furry ass.

"Boy, I sure am glad thought bubbles aren't visible, otherwise I'd look like a psychopath."

Jesus, when your kid starts fantasizing about suicide bombing the local bully, don't run to the crayon box to turn it into a heartfelt children's book; call the therapist and start putting locks on the scissors.

But that's not on the Bear family's checklist when they find out about Little Sister's Inigo Montoya caliber revenge vow. Because even in the Bear universe, chain replica love, snitches get stitches.

So naturally, Brother Bear's next move is to set up a scrappy Rocky style training session in the basement with a bag of beans standing in for Tuffy.

"Hit her hard enough in the kidneys and she'll wet her pants. Remember shame is half the battle."

When Sister Bear shows up at school the next day, she finds the bully doin' what bullies do (mostly bully stuff), and immediately pops her in the face.

Under the agreement with prosecutors, the trio will plead no contest to charges of kidnapping and assault, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Casey Jarvis, who is prosecuting the case. Zhai will be sentenced to 13 years in prison, Yang to 10 and Zhang to six, he said.

Jarvis said his office agreed to drop the torture charge, which carries a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, replica pendant cartier, because the teens had no criminal history.

"We felt in the interest of justice it was the right thing to do," Jarvis said.

Attorney Rayford Fountain, who represents Yang, said the agreement was the best outcome for his client.

The teens are among thousands of students from mainland China who attend high schools in California without much in the way of parental supervision.
