I look forward to the announcement of the federal budget each year with the same level of anticipation as I do a trip to the dentist. It is inevitable that there will be at least a few days coverage on the health of the economy as well as which societal groups are budget winners and which groups lose out. Important but on the whole a bit bland. Prepared for the same, I did not expect the violent excitement splashed across the front page ofThe Australian on Wednesday.
I am assuming that this depiction is due to Labor scrapping its plan to cut business taxes and instead redirect those funds into payment aimed at reducing the cost of living for low income families.
Wow, reneging on a promise is never a popular political move but this cartoon coupled with the headline the rich, save the base seems just a little bit overboard. I not going to go into my own opinions on the budget, besides, I doubt anyone would want to read a second year journalism student cobbled together understanding of complex fiscal matters. However the coverage inThe Australian blew my general budget antipathy right out of the water.
I understand that there is a delicate balancing act that must be played between balanced reporting and the commercial interests of a newspaper. But in this case it would seem that objectivity has been chucked straight out the window.
We have a grand tradition of satyrical cartoons pulling the stuffing of puffed up politicians but this goes beyond that point. This ventures into that vague limbo just before the train pulls into propaganda station.
We are left in no uncertain doubt about editorial opinion in regards to this budget. However, when editorial opinion is presented side by side with political reportage, the line between fact and opinion becomes blurred.
This kind of biased coverage does not belong on the front page of a national newspaper of international repute. We can at least try to keep the journalistic scales relatively balanced, cartier replica men wedding ring.
Do you think this budget coverage went too far?

Brave new world for air passengers
Stranded when the airlines shut down last week, like millions of other business travelers, cartier replica yellow diamond ring, she was back Monday morning in her home office in Dickeyville, eager to regroup and find simple satisfaction in checking off, one by one, the items crowding her to do list.
Then the brave new world of air travel intervened.
Like many other frequent fliers, Marsh is struggling this week to adjust to the new, less efficient realities of air travel and all the uncertainties that come with them.
It took her just six months to rack up the 100 trips required to join US Airway's Chairman's Preferred program, which offers perks for its best customers. But for even the most experienced travelers, the changes in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are turning well planned days to chaos.
For Marsh, the cancellation of her flight meant leaving a day early. It required quick phone work: She booked new flights, changed car rental plans, found a hotel and packed for the unexpected overnight trip. Monday, with the airline telling her she'd have to drive to its ticket center in Pikesville to pick up a paper receipt to get through the tightened airport security. That side trip ate up another hour. flight, as officials at Baltimore Washington International Airport had recommended.
She considered booking a later flight to Providence, the last one of the evening. But "I just can't take a chance that it will be canceled, too," she said. for the airport, she'd been able to accomplish little other than changing her travel plans. There had been no opportunity to prepare for her trips to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York later in the week. Nor had she made an important phone call for a neighborhood fund raising project, mailed books to a friend, dealt with last week's mail, reprogrammed her cellular phone, filed her expense report or cleaned her office.
"I'm not real happy about this," she said, hoisting her briefcase and overnight bag into the back of her station wagon.
A welcome turn
But the next leg of the trip took a surprising and welcome turn. Forewarned that the airport could be jammed with long lines at ticket counters and security checkpoints, Marsh had an inkling otherwise. After all, cartier replica love band ring, she'd had no problem either reserving a seat on the evening flight or rebooking her rental car in Providence.
In the Fast Park lot, she saw the first evidence that travelers were staying home. "It's empty!" she said, pulling into a parking lot with more empty spaces than cars. She took her pick of spots. "It's usually packed. This is a piece of cake."
A few minutes later, a shuttle bus dropped her at the terminal, which proved to be similarly devoid of customers. Checking in at the ticket counter, she stood second in a line of two and had to wait less than a minute.
Did she really need a paper ticket to clear security or would her e mail receipt do, she asked the ticket agent. "There is some debate," came the unsatisfactory reply. "They've gone back and forth."
Four minutes later, cartier gold replica ring, she moved on to the passenger checkpoint. As a half dozen people waited, the new routine became clear.
Pointing to illustrations of scissors and a nail file posted on a sign next to her, a uniformed woman with a two way radio asked each passenger if he or she were carrying either or even a pair of nail clippers. Marsh produced a small pair of cuticle trimmers, which the woman confiscated. If Marsh returned through the airport within five days, she was told, she could reclaim them.
Meanwhile, the metal detector she passed through didn't notice the bangle of silver bracelets and a Rolex watch on her left wrist. Her bags weren't opened, cartier replica love ring wedding band, and neither were those of other passengers in line.
But one flight attendant was forced to turn over a corkscrew he was carrying, and a middle aged passenger was stopped and interrogated when, after being cleared to go to a gate once, he left the boarding area and tried to go back through security a practice no one would have questioned in the past.
Speaking into her radio, the guard spelled the man's name and turned a sharp eye on his ticket stub. "Do I look like I'm from Iraq?" he asked belligerently. "Do I look like I'm from Iran?"

What trust ? The whole point of the PKI is to bind public keys to identities. The important point here is the kind of identity we are talking about, and also who will do the trusting part.
So a root CA should be operated by en entity which:
Scenario 1: imagine that you want to submit your annual tax declaration through the Internet, cartier gold replica ring, and that the fiscal administration of your country wishes to authenticate tax payers through certificates (that's how it works in France). The notion of identity is here what vital records are about: name, date of birth, and so on. Both vital record maintenance and tax recovery are State prerogatives. So, in that setup, it makes a lot of sense that the State manages the root CA: the State already has procedures for keeping track of physical identities, and is also the certificate consumer in that scenario: the State (tax recovery service) is the entity which will verify certificates. Offloading the CA to an external private entity looks like a needless complication here.
Scenario 2: you are a big company which wants to issue certificates to their employees, so that they may encrypt and sign their emails. The identity is not the legal name, but the function of the key holder: you do not send an encrypted email to Bob (the VP of sales), you send an encrypted email to the VP of sales (currently Bob). If (when) Bob becomes "unavailable" (he gets fired), past emails should be readable by Dave (the new VP of sales). The notion of identity used in that scenario is then fully under the control of the company (the company defines its own hierarchical structure) and the link with physical key holders is also defined by the company. There is no reason whatsoever to implicate any government here; the natural root CA in that scenario is one operated by the company itself.
Scenario 3: a variation on scenario 2. Now there are several big companies, each with its own CA. They want to be able to do encrypted emails with each other. There are several ways to achieve this; one of them is bridging (each CA issues intermediate certificates for the root CA of other companies), which keeps the whole thing under the same model than in scenario 2. Or you could imagine an external root, which will issue intermediate CA certificates for the company CA. That external root is then trusted by everybody; it could be government operated (as a public service) or privately managed (a provider of "trust services", bound by contracts with each of the participating companies): this makes no scientific difference (you will prefer one over the other depending on whether you vote Democrat or Republican).
Scenario 4: the Internet, HTTPS Web sites, a Web browser with a set of default root CAs embedded in it. This is where things become tricky. Technically, the Web user is using the CA as basis for his trust. But the root CAs were included in the browser (or operating system) based on a contract between the browser vendor and the CA operator; neither of them has the defense of the customer interests as primary goals, and the contract details, embodied by the "certification policy statement" published by the CA, usually looks like: "whatever happens, rose gold replica cartier ring, it is not our fault" (but expressed over 200 pages of lawyer compatible jargon). It is not very clear who should issue certificates for HTTPS Web sites. The identity of a Web site owner is often a company name, cartier replica love ring, which is defined by whichever State the company was registered with. There are 193 UN member States and a dozen or so of other State like entities, not counting federal States who will want to be seen as several entities. That's quite a lot of potential CAs there. This is unsatisfying. But we want to identify companies because we want police forces to be able to track and punish usurpers and law enforcement is also a State prerogative.
So right now, we are doing HTTPS with whatever root CAs Microsoft found fit to include, and we all pray that attacks through fake certificates will remain a rare nuisance.
So, to sum up, the question of who should be a root CA really depends on the notion of identity you want to use. Usually, whoever defines that identity is in a good position to be the root CA, because it is already, by definition, trusted.
A nitpick: Trust doesn "come from" a CA. Trust isn some kind of magic liquid that flows out of CAs and makes everything safe. Similarly, I would quibble with the statement that "the external root is then trusted by everybody"; it would be clearer to say that "everyone is vulnerable to the external root" (since they may or may not, in fact, deem it trustworthy). Similarly, on the web, the user is not using the CA as a basis for trust; the user probably has no idea the CA even exists. A CA is an entity who we are vulnerable to (sometimes willingly so). Security experts understand that there is no difference. Non security experts don Non security types are more likely to think that trust is a good thing (rather than realizing it is something to be avoided whereever possible), and to think that if trust comes out of a CA, then that great, we want more of that. Some organisations will trust government, while some definitely won't. Some will trust a bank in this role, but would a competitor trust them? I have seen many banks set up their own PKIs or use a PKI vendor and the physical security requirements around root CA generation and storage are very James Bond!
For your specific situation, cartier replica love ring mens, look at your needs, trust requirements and risk. What PKI provider is most likely to match your needs? How is their disaster recovery and business coninuity plan structured does this match your requirements? How do they prevent compromise of the root CA?
I think the answer here is subjective. Who you should trust depends on your purpose as well as your belief in what entity will manage the data and the process in an appropriate manner.
Just like I wouldn't trust that the guy in the dark alley is selling me a Rolex watch, I wouldn't trust "Ma and Pa's House of Certificates" unless I'd actually visited Ma and Pa's shop and figured out that Ma and Pa had Fort Knox in their basement and had a strong grasp of the procedures necessary to verify identity, ensure CA data integrity and deliver timely information about certificate status.
Also I think it depends on your mission I'm more than willing to get a certificate issued by a government for the purpose of identification within that government's jurisdiction just like we tend to use driver's licenses in the US as both proof of ID and of age. But I'd be less happy about using my government issued identity if I was representing a multi national corporation and needed to present credentials in foreign countries in those circumstances, I'd expect to be issued a work certificate, the same way I'm issued a corporate ID badge today.

His Name's Abbott
These days, Abbott adheres to a much different schedule with a much lower profile. every weekday to Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce.
Abbott spends full days at the Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Academy, taking classes with imposing sounding names such as "Defensive Tactics," "Weapons Training" and "Medical First Responder." He arrives home after dinner, spends long evenings studying self made index cards filled with confusing terminology and finally collapses into bed so he can do it all over again the next day.
Injuries have claimed one dream, van cleef and arpels clover copy necklace, but Abbott is busy pursuing his next. He is going to be a police officer.
Starting salary is $31,900 but increases with seniority.
"I've wanted to do it for a long time," says Abbott, one of 22 prospective officers in the academy. "I always told myself I would. I'm 34 now. I've got to start another career. I'm ready for it. I'm motivated for it. I'm going to have fun. That's the biggest thing."
During his playing career, Abbott estimates he went on more than 100 ride alongs with local police in cities such as Fort Lauderdale, Denver and New York City. He remains friendly with a couple of officers from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Vince Maffei and Dale Iben, once helping a paramedic hold an IV bag on a pedestrian who was hit by a van traveling 40 mph.
"Blood was coming out of the man's ears," Abbott recalls.
He was hired in January by the Stuart Police Department, where he will join a 50 person force by late summer. But first Abbott must get through the five month academy and pass a 350 question state exam.
Four weeks into the program, Abbott finds the classes fascinating but difficult. While it's hard to imagine many professional athletes subjecting themselves to that type of scrutiny and workload, Abbott is a true believer.
"I've got my hands full, van cleef fake alhambra necklace," he says. "Making it to the major leagues and playing for as long as I did, I think this will probably be a bigger achievement for me."
He quotes one of his police instructors, who is fond of saying, "It's not the muscle. It's the brain."
Abbott says he doesn't have to work. He made several million dollars during a nine year major league playing career and was careful with his money.
Known for wearing jeans, T shirts and sandals whenever possible, Abbott will never forget the clubhouse reaction when he made one of his few splurges, a Rolex watch.
"Abby," teammate Darren Daulton said back in '97, "you wearing a Rolex is like putting diamond earrings on a pig."
Abbott laughed as hard as everybody else in the room. He prides himself on being unpretentious, van cleef and arpels knock off clover necklace, accessible, a man of the people.
It's those same qualities that drive him to prepare for his second career.
"If it's just to go to work and collect a paycheck, that's the wrong intent," says Abbott, who made his offseason home in Davie for 10 years before moving to Stuart early last year. "You've got to protect the person that's not guilty and get rid of crime."
Those who know Abbott best are supportive of his decision.
"I'm not surprised," says pitcher Al Leiter, Abbott's former teammate with the Marlins and New York Mets. "That's Abby. It really intrigued him. He was right in the middle of some serious stuff."
Abbott played in two World Series. Had his body cooperated, he could have extended his utility career, but a severe abdominal tear ruined his 2001 season in Atlanta.
He missed the entire 2002 season as well before giving it one more shot last year with the Cardinals. When Abbott ruptured his Achilles tendon in June with Triple A Memphis, he was done.
He sat home with Stacey and their two kids, Kyra, 5, and Kyle, van cleef and arpels clover knock off necklace, 31/2. He watched his share of reality television and did odd jobs around the house.
Golf wasn't his game. The kids were too young for extensive travel. He needed a new challenge.
Over the winter, Abbott decided it was time to take the next bold step. He contacted the Stuart Police Department, arranged an interview and was one of a handful of new hires.
"They asked me what are my goals," Abbott says. "I can't answer that because I haven't been in it. But when I do get into it, I may be in on murders or driving a motorcycle. Tickets ruin people's days, but if you're putting somebody in danger, you deserve a ticket."

George Morris saw her ride at Spruce Meadows, and invited her to come ride with him, announcer Melanie Smith Taylor told us via the NBC Universal broadcast of the FEI World Cup finals as 23 year old Ashlee Bond began a promising round on her horse, Cadett 7, last night.
That statement likely sent a pang of envy through the bowels of aspiring grand prix riders across the country. To be noticed by THE George Morris, to be picked out of a thousand rounds, a starmaker opportunity. There were three questions he asked her, apparently. The second one was,van cleef alhambra replica necklace, "could she put her signature California blonde pony tail up under her helmet?" according to Chronicle of the Horse article written by Kat Netzler in March.
Fortunately, she said yes, and Ashlee Bond joined the US Nations Cup Team as a wild card entry in 2007. The Chronicle story does remind us that she was not exactly an unknown at that point she had her father's barn and show jumper Richard Spooner behind her, among others, and had competed in Grand Prix since age 16.
For those who don't have the means or the horse to get to Spruce Meadows, to a George Morris clinic or through the Maclay or Medal competitions, there is another way to catch his eye. The US Hunter Jumper Association initiated an Emerging Athletes program last July.
"This is a national grass roots program for emerging athletes that is only the start of something very big and important to the future of the next generation of our sport. USHJA and the members of the Emerging Athletes Committee are committed to making this program one that will provide a stepladder for young talent to reach their goals of riding on a team representing the United States someday." Stated Melanie Smith, Co Chairman of the Emerging Athletes Committee.
Yes, the same Melanie Smith (Taylor), former Olympic competitor herself and longtime NBC equestrian commentator. The training sessions for 2009 are just beginning, so there will be a chance to see how this works before applying for the 2010 session this fall. You have a little time to prepare the selection process is based on both current achievements and your goals. According to one participant, she has done mostly "C" rated shows, so you don't have to be top of your division to get in,van cleef and arpels clover replica necklace, since this is about potential. If you are a total beginner, you can still think a few years ahead.
The Zone 9 (Pacific Northwest) training session is on July 20 and 21st in Bend, clover copy necklace van cleef, Oregon. Those selected by clinician Melanie Smith will go on to the next phase. The USHJA site lists all the locations here.
Ashlee Bond and Cadett finished in a fast 75.35 with 4 faults, so they didn't make the jump off. Still, it was a gutsy performance with plenty of forward.
As for the rest of the competition, in spite of fast, precise rounds by McLain Ward and Beezie Madden, and an eventful ride from Rich Fellers, the Americans were bested again by the ex pat Californian, Meredith Michaels Beerbaum, who turned on the juice with her horse Shutterfly right at the start, beating Sapphire's time by a full second. Melanie Smith Taylor gave some credit to Shutterfly's thoroughbred blood (through his maternal grandsire and elsewhere), though there results were as much a matter of strategy and saved strides as pure speed.
The duo could be on their way to repeating last year's win. but a lot could happen in the final round on Sunday.
Meanwhile, van cleef arpels fake alhambra necklace, I am thinking of my own goals and aspirations. its one week from today to my first Limited Distance Ride. There will be no Rolex watch for the winner, and we won't be riding to win, just to finish without exhausting ourselves, but I do hope to spiral upwards!

Nicholas Minucci and other teens allegedly jumped a Sikh man in Queens and one of them clubbed him while the twin towers burned, the sources said.
During the beating, Minucci allegedly screamed, "F g Arab! Why don't you blow this up!
" a source familiar with the incident said.

But Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly scoffed at Minucci's story.
"Let me stress, there's no evidence that in this case it was anything other than a racially motivated attack," Bloomberg said.
m. attack Wednesday comes nearly 20 years after Howard Beach became a symbol of racism when a black man died at the hands of a white mob.
The Rev. Al Sharpton, who rocketed to fame in 1986 by leading a march through the mostly white enclave in Queens, defended Moore yesterday, ripping reports that the victim had gone to the area to steal a car.
"I am not trying to fight for the right of blacks to steal cars," Sharpton said. Gregory Meeks (D Queens), who also is black, and send a message of tolerance.
Moore, 22, remained in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital, but he was breathing on his own and detectives were showing him photos of his alleged attackers.
"I'm astonished that here in New York we have to live with lynch mobs," said Moore's lawyer Derek Sells, a lawyer from the late Johnnie Cochran's firm.
Meanwhile, Minucci, dressed in gray shorts and a black T shirt, barely made a peep as he was arraigned. He did not enter a plea during the proceeding, but in a statement to cops, he claimed he was accosted by "three black kids" who demanded he turn over a $4,000 gold chain and $6,000 Rolex watch they had seen him wearing.
"One of them pushed me into a wall, one held my head against the wall and one put a screwdriver to my neck," he told cops.
Minucci said he wasn't wearing the jewelry when he was allegedly attacked. Prosecutors rejected the entire story.
