PHILADELPHIA -- Nikolaj Ehlers is a two-sport star who credits his time on the soccer pitch with helping his game on the ice. Air Max 2017 Homme Noir . Ehlers, who played for Denmarks national team until he was 14 before concentrating on hockey, was selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the ninth overall pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. The five-foot-10, 176-pounder was fourth in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 104 points (49-55) in 63 games with the Halifax Mooseheads this past season. He feels that his soccer skills have helped him develop more speed on the ice, one of the key elements of his game. "I think Im a fast forward," he said. "I think I have a lot of speed I can use on the wing. I like to set up some nice plays and I like to score some goals." Ehlers was the first player from the QMJHL to be selected in the 2014 draft. The 18-year-old took the leagues rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year honours. Ehlers also had 28 points (11-17) in 16 post-season games for the Mooseheads. "I found myself becoming more of a fan when I watched him play," said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. "Any time he got the puck, you felt like something was going to happen. "Hes not the biggest guy when it comes to size, but he plays with such good hockey sense that he knows when to take an opportunity to go, and not really put himself in harms way to try to make a play." Ehlers speed helps compensate for his relatively slight build. "He doesnt have a lot of weight on him so youre going to want him to continue to grow, but hes a pretty strong player," said Cheveldayoff. "The way he plays the game and the way he moves out there, he has some hidden strength that a lot of players maybe his size dont." Ehlers said he planned to hit the gym over the summer. "Obviously, Ive got to get a little bit bigger and stronger," he said. "I can use my speed to get out of the rough time on the ice, but Im not afraid to get hit or hit somebody." Cheveldayoff said the youngster is a well-rounded individual. "His hockey sense is right up there," he said. "And his characters not far behind. This is a player that every time we had an opportunity to meet with him, we didnt want the interview to end. Hes going to be an exciting player for a long time." Foles made his first start in Week 6 at Tampa Bay and helped the Eagles even their record at 3-3. However, Foles would suffer through his worst start as a pro on Oct. 20 versus Dallas and was knocked out of the game with a concussion. After a brief Vick appearance and a Matt Barkley sighting the next week in a loss to the Giants, Foles stormed back with seven touchdown passes at Oakland, then led Philadelphia to another road win against Green Bay. The Eagles won five in a row at one point and erased a 3-5 start by finishing the season 7-1. Philadelphia squeezed past the Cowboys, 24-22, last Sunday night to capture the division crown and bring playoff football back to the Linc. "Its a great feeling," Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson said about returning to the playoffs. "Our fans are going to go wild. Its a great opportunity to bring the playoffs to Philadelphia on Saturday. We just need to have a great week of practice and get ready for a good team coming in here." Foles passed for 263 yards with two TDs and no interceptions in Big D, while the heart-and-soul of the offense, running back LeSean McCoy, recorded 131 yards on 27 carries to break the franchises single-season rushing mark, which was previously held by Wilbert Montgomery. McCoy led the NFL in rushing yards (1,607) and yards from scrimmage (2,126) and will face a Saints defense rated 19th in defending the run (111.6 yards per game). The Eagles finished the season first in rushing yards (160.4) and second in total yards (417.2). McCoy, Foles and Jackson give the Eagles a scary offensive trio, while the speedy wide receiver had a career-high 82 receptions for 1,332 yards, the second-most in team lore. Not to be forgotten, wide receiver Riley Cooper had a career year and put a foolish offseason incident in the past by hauling in 47 passes for 835 yards and eight TDs. He emerged as a big-play threat and averaged 17.8 yards per catch. All that wouldnt have happened if it wasnt for the efficient play of Foles. The lanky QB threw for 2,891 yards with 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, the best TD/INT ration in NFL history. Foles 119.2 passer rating led the league and he compiled 21 TD passes over the last eight games of the regular season. Foles now faces Brees and the two attended Westlake High School in Austin, TX. "Ive always watched him from afar," Foles said of Brees. "Hes a great player and one of the best to ever play the game at the position. Hes a guy Ive watched and learned from and hes done a lot of great things throughout his career, on and off the field, and hes a great role model for fellow players, kids and adults." New Orleans failed in its bid to capture an NFC South title and perhaps its struggles on the road this season didnt help. The Saints were an impressive 8-0 under the lights at the SuperDome, but 3-5 in enemy stadiums. Brees and the Saints captured a playoff berth with last Sundays 42-17 demolition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as Brees passed for 381 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and surpassed the 5,000-yard passing mark for the fourth time in his Hall of Fame career. Brees, who has eclipsed the 5,000- yard passing mark in each of the previous three seasons, threw a TD pass in every game this year, finishing with 39 total, 5,162 yards and 12 INTs. The Saints did not make the playoffs a season ago when head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the entire year because of a bounty scandal. Payton and Brees have formed a solid friendship both on and off the field, and the quarterback is ready to get going again for another Super Bowl run. "That is always where the expectation has been," Brees said of reaching the playoffs with or without Payton. "I know that we fell short of that last year and that was disappointing. We expected to be here with Sean, without Sean. Obviously having him back is great and he has a way of just little things to just kind of remind you of the focus and the opportunity and why we are all here." Brees, who won the Super Bowl in 2009, is the only player in NFL history with two or more 5,000-yard seasons and has three straight 300-yard passing games in the playoffs. New Orleans welcomed Payton back by winning its first five games, but stumbled in a road matchup at New England. The Saints responded by winning four of five games, then dropped three of the next four before closing the regular season by crushing the Bucs. The Saints probably thought winning the division would be a no-brainer because Atlanta struggled, but Carolina came out of nowhere behind Cam Newton to claim the division and a first-round bye. Much like the Eagles minus the ground attack, the Saints have a solid quarterback and plenty of talented pass catchers. Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham finished the season with 86 catches for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns, becoming the first tight end in NFL history to record at least 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns in two different seasons. Graham had six 100-yard games and is a huge target for the Saints. "Its been a good year for this team. We have been through a lot," Graham said. "We have had ups and downs. We have learned a lot from our mistakes." Graham and wide receivers Marques Colston (943 yards, 5 TD) and Kenny Stills (641 yards, 5 TD) get to line up against Philadelphias average secondary. The Eagles were last in passing yards allowed (289.8) and 29th in total yards allowed (394.2) in the regular season. They have played better on defense, though, especially against talented receivers in Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall. But while Graham seems to be Philadelphias biggest issue, it will be running back Darren Sproles who can wreak havoc. Sproles was one of four players with at least 70 receptions (71) and finished with 604 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. Running back Pierre Thomas aided in New Orleans pass attack by grabbing 77 passes for 513 yards and three scores. Thomas also had a team-high 549 rushing yards and two TDs. He is nursing a chest injury, but should play. The Saints, losers in three straight on the road, were second behind Denver in passing yards (307.4) and fourth in total yards (399.4). New Orleans and Philadelphia will meet for the third time in the playoffs, as the Eagles won back in 1992 and the Saints prevailed in 2006. "We went to play two games where its tough for any team to play in the NHL and were out of there with the series tied," said Therrien. "Thats the big picture. HOUSTON - Bum Phillips, the folksy Texas football icon who coached the Houston Oilers during their Luv Ya Blue heyday and later led the New Orleans Saints, died Friday. Danny DeKeyser Red Wings Jersey . He was 90. "Bum is gone to Heaven," son Wade Phillips tweeted Friday night. "Loved and will be missed by all — great Dad, Coach, and Christian." Phillips died at his ranch in Goliad. Wade Phillips is the Houston Texans defensive co-ordinator. Born Oail Andrew Phillips Jr. in 1923 in Orange, Phillips was a Texas original in his blue jeans, boots and trademark white Stetson — except at the Astrodome or any other dome stadium because he was taught it was disrespectful to wear a hat indoors. "Mama always said that if it cant rain on you, youre indoors," Phillips said. Phillips loved the Oilers and when coaching the team in the 1970s, he famously said of the Cowboys: "They may be Americas Team, but were Texas team." He took over as coach of the Oilers in 1975 and led Houston to two AFC Championship games before he was fired in 1980. He was responsible for drafting Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell, the player who was largely credited with the success of the franchise. "He meant a great deal to this franchise, the NFL and the city of Houston, and he was instrumental to the Oilers during the Luv Ya Blue era," Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. "Growing up in Texas and working his way up through the Texas football ranks, he was a natural match for our team. Those were such magical years, and his leadership and personality helped our team rise to the top." His time with the team was marked by a frenzied fan base that filled the Astrodome to root for the Oilers and wave their blue and white pompons during games. Houston lost to Pittsburgh 34-5 in the AFC Championship game in Campbells rookie year. The Oilers returned to the game the following season only to be beaten again by the Steelers, this time 27-13. The Oilers went 11-5 in 1980 but lost to Oakland in the AFC wild-card round and Phillips was fired. He was 55-35 with the team in the regular season. Fans loved his no-nonsense demeanour and were entertained by his often blunt comments "Football is a game of failure," Phillips was quoted as saying. "You fail all the time, but you arent a failure until you start blaming someone else." Among his best Bumisms: "Theres two kinds of coaches, them thats fired and them thats gonna be fired." On Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula: "He can take hisn and beat yourn and take yourn and beat hisn." On Campbells inability to finish a mile run: "When its first-and-a-mile, I wont give it to him." On Campbell: "I dont know if hes in a class by himself, but I do know that when that class gets together, it sure dont take long to call the roll." He left Texas to coach the Saints in 1981, going 27-42 before retiring after the 1985 season. "We are saddened by the passing of Bum Phillips," Saints owner Tom Benson said in a statement released by the team. "I had the opportunity to work with him when I first purchased the team in 1985 and also enjoyed our friendship following his coaching career. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Debbie, Wade and the rest of his family." Phillips played football at Lamar Junior College before joining the Marines during World War II. After the war he went to Stephen F. Austin where he played two more football seasons before graduating with a degree in education in 1949. He spent about two decades coaching in high schools and colleges mostly in Texas — he assisted the likes of Bear Bryant at Texas A&M, Bill Yeoman at Houston, and Hayden Fry at SMU — before making the jump to the AFL in 1967 as an assistant under Sid Gillman with the San Diego Chargers. Phillips came to Houston in 1974 as Gillmans defensive co-ordinator and became coach and general manager when Gillman resigned after that season. Phillips picked up the nickname Bum as a child when his younger sister couldnt pronounce brother correctly and it sounded like bum. He embraced the nickname and was quoted as saying: "I dont mind being called Bum, just as long as you dont put a you in front of it." Phillips did some work as an analyst on television and radio football broadcasts for a bit before retiring to his ranch in Goliad. Although he left Houston, he always remained fond of the city. The Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans in 1997 and Houston returned to the NFL in 2002 when the Texans began play. He was asked how he feels about the two teams in Texas in 2007 when son Wade was named coach of the Cowboys. "Your son is coaching one team and the other team is the town you love more than any other," he said. "Its kind of hard to pull. Theyre not on the schedule, so I dont have to make that decision this year." Wade Phillips said his father was still sharing tips with him this season. "He always gives me a little advice about why did you play this on that certain down and this stuff," Wade said. "Hes sharp on all the football stuff." The 59-save shutout is an NHL record. The 59 shots tied the mark for the most ever given up by Edmonton and Scrivens 59 saves were a team record. Jordan Morris USA Jersey . -- Zach Johnson is like most players at the World Challenge, not sure whether hes still playing in 2013 or if hes in the middle of the new wraparound season that officially started in October. All he knows is that hes leading. Johnson, who already has two official PGA Tour events under his belt in the "new season," came out a few days early to the unofficial World Challenge to work on new equipment with Titleist at its test centre in Carlsbad, and to meet with his team of coaches to outline goals for 2014 and to identify weakness. One priority is to score better on the par 5s, and Johnson wasted little time on that. Sherwood has five par 5s. He made birdie on four of them for a 5-under 67, giving him a one-shot lead over Matt Kuchar. Hunter Mahan and Bubba Watson were at 70, while tournament host Tiger Woods missed short putts at the beginning and end of his round and had to settle for a 71. "A highlight that were looking into next year is trying to play those holes a little bit better," Johnson said of the par 5s. "I dont know what I did that today. I hit it close. I had good shots in there with the proper spin, nothing more than that. But youve got to take advantage of them. Youve got five of them. The thing is ... one errant shot, youre staring a 6 right in the face, if not more. Theres a lot of penal areas." Johnson said he still considers Kapalua to be the start of the season. Woods, meanwhile, is still trying to get his head around the schedule change. He hasnt played an official tournament in the 2013-14 season. The only event he played was the Turkish Open, where he tied for third in the European Tour event. After this week, he wont play again until Torrey Pines at the end of January. Thats his usual starting point, except that the PGA Tour already has had six guys win tournaments. "To me, Im still on the old calendar, so to me this is the end of the year," Woods said. "I know that Im going to be pretty far behind on points by the time I tee up again, and thats just kind of the way its going to be. ... But you have the entire summer, you have the entire major championship season, you have the big events and then the playoffs. Anything can happen. But its going to be interesting to see how far behind some of us are when we start." This sure didnt feel like summer. The temperature was in the upper 20s before the sun came up in the foothills of the Santa Monica mountains. There was a one-hour frost delay. "The scoring reflects that. The greens are much firmer. The speed of them caught me by surprise a little bit today. My speed was a little clumsy, and it showed today on the greens." This is the final year the tournament is being played at Sherwood. It moves to Isleworth just outside Orlando, Fla., next year. Any rust Woods felt had to do with the greens, which he said showed on some of his putts. "I made a few mistakes today," Woods said. "I also hit a couple of good shots that ended up in some interesting spots. That can happen out there. I shot about the score ... maybe could have gotten one or two more out of it." Johnson had few complaints. He opened with two birdies, and then surged ahead on the back nine with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch, three of them on the par 5s. Johnson has a pair of runner-up finishes at this event, and with the tournament moving, this is his last shot at Sherwood. "I did everything decent," he said. "Just a real solid day all around. I was aggressive when I needed to be aggressive, and I was conservative when I needed to be conservative. Its nothing more than a decent start." on that.
