Verstappen has swapped places with Daniil Kvyat after the Russian was unceremoniously dropped back to Toro Rosso after his crashes last weekend in Sochi. The 18-year-old spent Thursday at Red Bulls Milton Keynes factory and has a week to prepare for the next race in Barcelona, where he will drive the RB12 for the first time. Kravitz on the Red Bull swap Why have Red Bull swapped Max Verstappen and Daniil Kvyat now - and what does it tell us? Well, of course I was very happy, he said. A bit shocked as well - I didnt expect it, but yes Im very happy with the opportunity of course.I have to say a big thank you to Red Bull and Dr Helmut Marko and now I just cant wait to jump into the car.I wouldnt say theres more pressure to be honest. Of course Im driving for a top team now, but in the end you always try to do your best which is what I always try to do. For me, I dont feel more pressure. Verstappen will partner Daniel Ricciardo, who he lives in the same building with in Monaco, for the remainder of the 2016 season, and there are theories that Red Bull have dumped Kvyat just to keep the Dutchman away from rivals. The youngster is thought to be tied to Red Bull until the end of 2017 but it is an open secret Mercedes and Ferrari are monitoring his progress closely. Sky F1 pundit Martin Brundle felt the timing of the line-up change was a masterstroke from Red Bull after Kvyats error-strewn performance at his home grand prix when he both ended Sebastian Vettels race and hampered his teams. ALAMEDA, Calif. Antti Niemi Stars Jersey . -- The Oakland Raiders added two more playoff-tested veterans to their rebuilding defence. Oakland signed free agent defensive lineman Antonio Smith to a two-year, $9 million contract and cornerback Tarell Brown to a one-year, $3.5 million deal Friday. The moves come a day after Oakland signed Justin Tuck and LaMarr Woodley to two-year deals to bolster the defensive line, giving Oakland four new defensive starters with experience of playing in the Super Bowl. "I think its a domino effect," Brown said. "I think anytime you bring in guys that have won a lot of games and have played in a lot of big games as well and have had a lot of success in this league, it definitely helps. We can kind of put things in perspective and guide younger guys in the direction of saying, Look, get under my wing and this is how you do it in the NFL to be successful." Oakland needs plenty of help on defence after showing promise early last season. The Raiders defence wilted late and allowed the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history. Oakland has had two of the three highest scoring seasons allowed in coach Dennis Allens first two years with the franchise. The Raiders could be without all four starting defensive linemen from last season with LaMarr Houston signing with Chicago and Vance Walker reaching a deal with Kansas City. Pat Sims and Jason Hunter are also free agents. Oakland also has holes in the secondary with starting cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins and free safety Charles Woodson also free agents. Brown will likely team with last years first-round pick D.J. Hayden at cornerback. Hayden struggled his rookie season as he was recovering from a near fatal heart injury and missed the second half of the year with a sports hernia injury. "I think he is a great talent, a guy with a lot of speed and has all the athletic ability and can play this game," Brown said. "I think the biggest thing for him is just to be around guys that can help mould him and bring him along and help him turn into a true professional -- learn how to study on and off the field and things of that sort. But he is definitely a good talent." Brown, 29, spent the past seven seasons with the 49ers and made three trips to the NFC title game and one Super Bowl appearance. He started 42 games the past three seasons and has 11 career interceptions. He was rated the 25th best cover cornerback last year by Pro Football Focus. Smith, 32, has played 10 seasons with Arizona and Houston, going to the Super Bowl following the 2008 season with the Cardinals and making two playoff trips with the Texans. He has 41 1/2 career sacks, including five last season as a defensive end in Houstons three-man front. With Woodley and Tuck slated to play end in Oaklands four-man front, Smith will likely move inside where he is excited about the prospects of the new line. "There is a commitment to get better, there is a commitment to try and make this defence a great defence," he said. "Both those guys are guys that Ive watched over the years, especially Tuck, Ive always kept my eye on him. I think he does a lot of the same things I do. Im excited to be able to rush with him and work with him." The Raiders also met with offensive tackle Donald Penn, who left town without signing a contract. Patrick Sharp Jersey . Gallacher fought back after four bogeys over his opening eight left him in a five-way tie for the lead after 11 holes. He won the 25-year-old tournament with an overall 16-under 272 for only his third victory in 18 years and 431 events on the European Tour. Grillo secured his best Tour finish with an overall 15-under 273 when he eagled the last hole for a round of 66. Frenchman Romain Wattel also shot a 66, including birdies on the last two holes, to finish tied in third on 14-under 274 with Brooks Koepka (70) of the United States. Rory McIlroy struggled with a 74 to finish tied for ninth while top-ranked Tiger Woods (71) birdied his closing three holes for a share of 41st with a 6-under 282. The 39-year old Gallacher eventually broke clear of the logjam atop the leaderboard to birdie Nos. 13, 16th and 17th before a regulation par at the last. "It took everything I had to win today especially after the start I had when I bogeyed the first two holes," Gallacher said. Craig Hartsburg Jersey. "The good thing is that I was fortunate that no one was running away with the tournament ... The turning point came at 11 when I holed a nice putt for birdie." The top 50 in the world at the end of March get into the Masters. McIlroy began the last day two shots behind playing partner Gallacher but was 2-over after 10 holes before the first birdie of his round at the 11th. The Northern Irishman then bogeyed the 12th and 13th before only his second birdie of the round at No. 17. "On the rare occasions I got the ball close, I didnt make any putts, so it was one of those days," McIlroy said. "I thought if I could get to 16 under it would be good enough and it turned out that it was as thats what Stephen got to. I just wasnt able to play well enough to get there. Norman, OK (SportsNetwork. Custom Penguins Jersey .com) - TaShawn Thomas scored 24 points with eight rebounds as No. 18 Oklahoma nabbed a 73-63 win over 22nd-ranked Baylor to open Big 12 action. Buddy Hield had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Isaiah Cousins added 19 points and eight boards for the Sooners (10-3, 1-0 Big 12), who have won their last three. It was a good way to open conference play, said Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger. I thought it was really played at a high level. I thought both teams in the first half had what they wanted offensively and I thought both did a better job defensively in the second half. Johnathan Motley scored 24 points and Taurean Prince gave 17 for the Bears (11-2, 0-1), who had a six-game winning streak broken. Well I thought this was a typical Big 12 game in what the season will be about, and that it was hard fought, said Baylor head coach Scott Drew. I thought both teams defended. We shot 37 percent and they shot 40 percent. I think both teams feel that they could have played better and done things better. The teams stayed close through the first part of the first half until Lester Medford hit a pair of 3-pointers two minutes apart to give Baylor a 23-16 lead with 8 1/2 minutes left. Oklahoma came right back with a jumper from Thomas and a pair of 3s from Hield to take the lead back a minute later. With the score tied late in the half, Thomas made another bucket and Cousins closed the half with a jumper to give the Sooners a 37-33 lead at the break. Leading by two, the Sooners got seven straight points, with Cousins 3-pointer giving the team a 46-37 lead just over four minutes in. Baylor tried to keep up and kept the game close, but Hields 3-ball with just over six minutes to play gave the team a 58-46 lead, and the Sooners cruised from there. ST. Marco Verratti Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Robinson Cano delivered the biggest hit of the day for the Seattle Mariners, but not before a perfectly executed drag bunt set up things against one of the best pitchers in baseball. James Jones went 3 for 4, including a bunt single that wound up in the middle of three converging players and loaded the bases for Cano, whose third-inning, opposite-field double drove in two runs in Mondays 3-0 victory over David Price and the sputtering Tampa Bay Rays. "Were a team that has to do anything to win a game," Cano said. "We dont have three or four or five guys thatll hit 30 home runs, so weve got to play the little game, do the little things." Five Seattle pitchers combined on a five-hitter, blanking the punchless Rays for the second straight days. The Mariners extended their scoreless streak to 19 innings and won for the eighth time in nine games. "Our last seven or eight starts have been pretty darn good. Our starters have given us everything weve asked them and probably a little bit more," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "With that our bullpen is even better." The Rays, whove made the playoffs four or the past six seasons, have lost 13 of 14 and are saddled with the worst record in the major leagues at 24-41. The last time they were 17 games under .500 was the end of 2007, the final year they were known as the Devil Rays. "Right now, were the worst team. I dont anticipate finishing like that ... but right now, weve earned that position," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "Do I believe we can turn this around? Absolutely," he said. "But right now, if youre a baseball fan watching us, and you look at everything, you have to consider us the worst team." Canos big hit came on an 0-2 pitch during a three-run third inning against Price (4-6), who struck out 10 in eight innings. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner has dropped three straight decisions and hasnt won in nine starts since beating Minnesota on April 22. "It just goes to show you how good this guy is," McClendon said of Cano. "Against one of the toughest lefties in baseball and down like that. ... That was a huge hit for us." Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez didnt allow a run, but failed to get through the fifth inning to qualify for the victory. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed four hits and walked five in 4 2/3 innings. Joe Beimel (1-1) retired the only two batters he faced to get the victory, and Fernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 20 opportunities. The Rays were shut out for the AL-high ninth time overall. Seattle finished a 6-1 road trip. The Mariners won three straight over Tampa Bay after dropping the opener of the four-game series. Price allowed three runs and seven hits and walked one. He has the best strikeout to walk ratio in baseball, but has also yielded a major league-leading 105 hits 99 2/3 innings. The Rays stranded seven runners and were 0 for 5 with men in scoring position through four innings against Ramirez, who entered the game with a 6.82 ERA. The frustration continued in the fifth, when Ramirez gave up a two-out double to James Loney and walked Ben Zobrist before McClendon turned to his bullpen. Beimel fanned pinch-hitter Jerry Sands, ending the threat and eliciting smattering of groans and boos from the crowd of 10,400 at Tropicana Field. "At some point, we have to get our bats alive," Maddon said. "The effort is wonderful. The work is great," the manager added. "The hits arent there." NOTES: Struggling Grant Balfour is out as the Rays closer. Maddon said the team instead will close games by committee. ... Mariners 1B Justin Smoak (sore left leg) and OF Michael Saunders (sore right shoulder) were out of the starting lineup for the third consecutive game. ... Rays rookie right-hander Jake Odorizzi (2-6) will go against St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright (8-3) in the opener of a two-game interleague series Tuesday night. JOHNS, N.L. -- It took the Texas Stars a little extra work to win the American Hockey Leagues championship trophy. For the third game in a row, the Stars needed overtime to beat the St. Johns IceCaps en route to the franchises first Calder Cup. Patrick Nemeth scored 14:30 into the extra period of Game 5 Tuesday night to give Texas a 4-3 victory over St. Johns. Nemeth deked inside and out and headed into the slot before firing a wrist shot top shelf past IceCaps goaltender Michael Hutchinson. "Three overtime games and coming from behind in a couple of them, It just shows all the character, and hard work we have in that locker room," said Texas forward Travis Morin. "We never gave up and we never quit. Every time, we found a way. We felt that if we played our game for 60 minutes, no matter what happened, wed have a chance." Morin, who was the overtime hero in Game 4, was crowned the most valuable player for the 2014 Calder Cup playoffs. However, he credited his team with helping him earn the award. "Its an honour," said Morin. "It really goes out to the whole team because I couldnt have done it without them. My linemates, (Brendan) Ranford and (Curtis) McKenzie, they did a hell of a job putting me in good spots and finishing plays. Its really a team effort." After finishing the regular season in first place the path to the Calder Cup wasnt easy for the Stars, who needed a Game 7 to eliminate the Toronto Marlies in the Western Conference final. "Its a lot of overwhelming joy," said Morin. "Ten months of hard work all for one goal. Everybody starts with this goal in mind, but only one team gets to realize it. Right now, were just soaking up the moment." IceCaps captain Jason Jaffray said the loss was a tough pill to swallow, especially with how tight the last three games have been in St. Johns. "Its devastating, obviously," he said. "You come this far, and with how hard the guys battled all year, its incredibly tough. You lose three games in overtime, a coouple unlucky goals, it couldve went either way. Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jersey. We couldve been playing for a championship here tonight, it couldve been 3-to-1 (in the series) in the other direction. They got the big goals when need be and give them credit. Their big guys came up when they needed them." Jaffray praised his teammates with battling hard in the series, although they fell short in the end. "I cant say enough about our guys," said Jaffray. "Hutchinson came out of nowhere and gave us a chance to win, making incredible save after incredible save. He deserves better (than to lose). He kept us in every game and won us Game 2. Mike Hedden had two goals and Brett Ritchie also scored for Texas in regulation time. Blair Riley, Jordan Hill and Josh Lunden supplied the offence for St. Johns. Hedden opened the scoring for the Stars when he carried the puck down the right wing and cut to the net, before toe-dragging and burying the puck high blocker side with a wrist shot at the 18:52 of the first period. Ritchie used a defenceman as a screen for his clubs second goal, as he shot it around an IceCaps defenceman, fooling Hutchinson over the shoulder at the 4:59 mark of the second period. The IceCaps scored their first when Hill fired a wrist shot from the point through a screen of several players in front of the net, at the 11:06 mark of the second. A perfect tape-to-tape pass from Zach Redmond at the right point found a flying Lunden at the left post for a one-time wrist shot into an open net at 16:38 of the second. St. Johns took the lead for the first time when Riley intercepted a pass between the defencemen in the slot and capitalized on a breakaway chance, beating Stars goalie Cristopher Nilstrop above his glove 6:33 into the third period. The Stars tied the game when the puck hit off of Hedden in the slot, with several players crashing the net, and flipped up and over Hutchinson with 6:34 left in the third period. Hutchinson made 41 saves for the IceCaps, while Nilstrop turned aside 33 shots for the Stars. Once he saw that go down, he went on a fourth-quarter scoring flurry. "That first 3 felt real good," Lillard said. "Once that went down, I felt if I got another clean look, Im gonna raise up again. And then it happened a couple more times." Lillard scored 14 of his 16 points in a key run to rally the Portland Trail Blazers past the Jazz 111-99 on Friday night. "On the offensive end, I need to tell my teammates whats coming. As a point guard, youre the head of the team," Lillard said. But even the second-year guard didnt know when his offence would start flowing. When it finally did, the Jazz had no answer. Wesley Matthews had 21 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 18 points and 14 rebounds -- his 40th double-double -- and Nicolas Batum added 15 points to keep Portland in the race to host a first-round playoff series. Derrick Favors scored 21 points and Enes Kanter had 15 points and 13 rebounds, but the Jazz have lost eight of nine. Early in the fourth quarter, the Jazz led by two and Lillard hadnt converted a single field goal. Over the next 3:24, Lillard made four 3-pointers and a pair of free throws. "We closed out with our hands down," Utah coach Ty Corbin said. "But give them credit, they made plays down the stretch." After that, the Blazers led by double-digits for the first time at 96-85 with 6:28 remaining and soon earned their seventh victory in their past eight games. "He hit those 3s and he just kind of felt it. Those 3s really turned the momentum of the game," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "Damian just took it on himself to make something happen." Marvin Williams was out with a knee bruise and the Jazz started the five players that figure to be the core as they rebuild. The quintet -- Gordon Hayward, Favours, Kanter, Trey Burke and Alec Burks -- are all 23 years or younger and have gained experience during this often-frustrating season for a franchise that once made the playoffs 20 years in a row. Burks has primarily filled the sixth-man roole while veteran Richard Jefferson had been the only Utah player to start (and play) every game this season. Tyler Johnson Lightning Jersey. The youthful lineup paid dividends early, but the Jazz struggled in the critical moments against a better team as they have all season. Burks had 16, Burke had 14 points and 11 assists and Hayward added 14, but no one could stop Lillard when he was determined to score in the final period. The Blazers drew within a half game of Houston for the fourth slot in the Western Conference as Minnesota edged the Rockets 112-110 on Friday. "You always want home court. If we can get it, we definitely want it. We saw Houston lost so that helps our chances," Aldridge said. Portland won its final road game of the season and has two remaining at home. The Blazers swept the Jazz for the first time in franchise history. The Blazers defence had improved over the past few months but the Jazz got the shots they wanted, for the most part, until Portland clamped down in the fourth and scored 35 points on the other end. "We just knew we had to take care of business. We got locked in and played better defence. It was just an understanding," Aldridge said. The Blazers went 7 for 8 from beyond the arc in the final period and though they were outrebounded by a 47-41 margin, Portland grabbed four offensive rebounds to get second shots down the stretch. "Were coming together at the right time. Defensively weve been locked in and our offence is starting to come around again. Were looking forward to the playoffs," Stotts said. The Jazz led most of the first half before Matthews scored 10 points in the final 3:09 of the second period to lift the Blazers to a 53-51 advantage at the break. Notes: Rudy Gobert was accidentally backhanded in the face by Burks as they pursued a rebound in the second quarter. ... Defending champions Chile were made to work hard for their Copa America quarter-final place as tournament debutantes Panama threatened to cause an upset in Philadelphia. Martin Havlat Blackhawks Jersey . Panama took a shock fifth-minute lead through Miguel Camargo but Eduardo Vargas struck twice to give Chile a deserved half-time advantage.Alexis Sanchez added another and though Abdiel Arroyo pulled one back, Sanchez made it 4-2 as Chile joined Argentina in qualifying from Group D. Camargo opened the scoring early on when he let fly from 25 yards on an angle and the ball bounced in front of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who failed to deal with it and saw it nestle in his net. Abdeil Arroyo is congratulated by Miguel Camargo after his goal against Chile Mauricio Islas effort was deflected behind as Chile sought a response, which came on the quarter-hour when Jaime Penedo saved Alexis Sanchezs low shot but Vargas followed up to sidefoot home.Penedo saved a weak volley from a stretching Charles Aranguiz and then brilliantly tipped Arturo Vidals header around the post. The Bayern Munich midfielder stayed forward to nod Sanchezs cross just over and then made a vital impact at the other end with a sliding interception to prevent Luis Tejada going through on goal. Eduardo Vargas celebrates with team-mates Gonzalo Jara and Jean Beausejour Chile dominated the rest of the first half and finally got their reward two minutes before the break when Vargas headed in Jean Beausejours left-wing cross.Panamas half-time substitutes Gabriel Torres and Arroyo wasted no time announcing themselves, Torres winning the ball deep in the Chile half but Arroyo firing wide. LONDON -- Lukas Podolski scored twice as Arsenal came from a goal down to beat West Ham 3-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday and provisionally reclaim the last Champions League spot. Antti Niemi Jersey . Arsenal trailed to Matthew Jarvis 40th-minute opener, but Podolski equalized before the break and Arsenal dominated the second half. Olivier Giroud made amends for an earlier miss by showing off a delicate touch in the area to put Arsenal ahead in the 55th and Podolski finished off the win with another clinical strike in the 78th. Arsenal leapfrogged Everton into fourth place, although the Merseyside club is only one point behind with a game in hand. "It was a hard-fought win, but a very, very important one," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "The key was (to score) just before halftime. In the second half we controlled well the game." Coming off their penalty-shootout win against Wigan in the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday, Arsenal looked sluggish at the start. West Ham was the better team for the first 30 minutes, but when the opening goal came it was against the run of play following a period of sustained Arsenal pressure. Kim Kallstrom, making his first start for Arsenal since joining on loan in January, lost track of Antonio Nocerino down the right flank as the West Ham player broke into the area. Nocerinos shot was stopped by Wojciech Szczesny, but Jarvis was there to head in the rebound in a goalmouth scramble. Jarvis then could have earned a penalty shortly afterward when Bacary Sagna clearly clipped his legs in the area, but he stayed on his feet and the referee waved play on. "Im grateful for that," Wenger said about Jarvis staying on his feet. "I dont think it was a penalty, but he touched him. Can you be too honest? Ill leave you that judgement." West Ham manager Sam Allardyce certainly thought so. "The facts are that when you stay on your feet the referees dont give penalties," Allardyce said. "When theres contact, you have to go down and make the referees mind up for him. Theres no reward for honesty." Arsenal responded shortly thereafter as Santi Cazorla found Podolski in the area and the Germany forward took one touch to create space before slotting a clinical finish inside the far post. Before that, Giroud had wasted Arsenals two best chances as the France striker couldnt make contact with Podolskis cross in the 14th, and then wasted a one-on-one opportunity in the 30th. Cazorla picked out Giroud that time as well, but the Frenchman went for finesse rather than power, trying to chip the ball with the outside of his boot past Adrian, but the goalkeeper palmed it away. Giroud made no mistake the next time, however, after Thomas Vermaelen picked him out with a long ball into the area. Giroud downed it with a perfect first touch and then slotted a shot between Adrians legs to put the hosts up for good. Arsenal kept pressing and the third goal came after Giroud broke down the left and sent a high pass in toward substitute Aaron Ramsey, who picked out Podolski with a header and the German blasted a high shot into the net. "Hes a fantastic finisher," Wenger said of Podolski. "The one you want to have a chance is him." Patrick Sharp Stars Jersey . -- The NFL cancelled its Hall of Fame game between St. John Klingberg Stars Jersey . Now the CFL on TSN analyst is back with his picks for Week 3, including predictions for a big East-West battle between the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts. Winnipeg at Montreal Cant see either team dominating but this will be the Bombers first game on the road so I give Montreal an edge. After two weeks Troy Smith has had a poor game followed by a better game. What Montreal needs is a clearly dominant game to acquire confidence that he is the quarterback of the present and the future. Lost in all the legitimate Smith talk is that Brandon Whitaker has put together a couple of productive games. After two years of injury-related absence he is one of the feel good stories of the year so far. Also after two games, theres good video on Gary Etchevarrys defence that give you one post snap look followed by everyone going everywhere after the play begins. Thats important because the first two games both Calgary and BC operate four-man fronts with three linebacker defences. Winnipeg is completely different and being able to study the fronts, stunts and blitzes helps everyone on the Montreal offence. Two good games for Drew Willy no doubt creates the question of can he perform at a high level in a third? Probably so but maybe just slightly below the first two games. Two excellent returners in this one, Demond Washington for Winnipeg and Larry Taylor for Montreal. In what could be a field goal game - I say Montreal by three in a fourth-quarter win. Montreal. Ottawa at Edmonton Not yet I say. Not yet for the Redblacks first win of the new organization. Both quarterbacks most exceptional skill is the courage to sit in the pocket, ignore pass rush pressure, and wait for the receiver to separate from coverage. And having that ability is something that must be exceptionally hard to develop. Cody Eakin Stars Jersey. . If Ottawa can establish Chevon Walker to keep Henry Burris out of too many second-and-long situations, Ottawa has a chance for that first win. If not the outside-in pressure from Howard and Willis will change the game. Defensive lineman Don Oramasionwu has been declared out of the season with a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee. Eddie Steele has been a nice early season surprise as a defensive tackle but with Oramasionwu out then ratio adjustment is an issue. Bottom line, Mike Reilly is doing an exceptional job of sliding at the right moment to stay healthy and the more he plays the better he gets. Edmonton moves to 3-0. Calgary at Toronto Tough one to read as the Stampeders are coming off their bye week and the Argos are coming off their best game of maybe the last year and two games. Last week Ricky Ray put up a little over 400 yards against a good Rider front four and defence. Its a similar challenge this week as Calgary also has a solid front four and defence. Can Toronto keep Jon Cornish under 100 yards without middle linebacker Shea Emery? Probably not, but I like Ray to bring another "A" game and win on a fourth quarter shootout. Give me the Argos at home over the Stampeders. BC at Saskatchewan This will be a long week in Regina for Rider players. I would be surprised if they do not bounce back and show up emotionally this Saturday night. Anthony Allan may not be dominant and Darian Durant may not be exceptional. But pass rush and pass blocking win and I think Saskatchewan will perform well in both areas. As head coach Corey Chamblin expressed in his halftime interview against Toronto, "Our problem is an absence in fundamental football, the basics of the game". Maybe not a word-for-word quote but you get what the problem was. Not going to happen again. Saskatchewan over B.C. RENTON, Wash. Cam Atkinson Blue Jackets Jersey . -- Earl Thomas was late to the announcement for his own contract extension, proving the Seattle Seahawks All-Pro free safety isnt just fast on the field. Driving a little too speedy to the Seahawks facility on Tuesday morning made Thomas late after getting pulled over. "I didnt try and bulldog him and say, My name is Earl Thomas. Because then he would be like, This dude is cocky, and give me a ticket," Thomas joked. "He let me off. Thats the moral of the story." Thomas was locked up through the 2018 season when the Seahawks announced a four-year contract extension making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. The deal is worth $40 million over four years and includes $27.7 million in guaranteed money. Thomas wanted the title of highest-paid safety. He also wanted the responsibility that comes with that. Thomas was hoping to get a long-term deal in place before the Seahawks start organized team activities later this month so there were no distractions heading into the 2014 season. "I compete in everything that I do and I want to set the bar. That was my goal," Thomas said. Thomas was Seattles second first-round pick in the 2010 draft, the first with coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider leading the franchise. Its turned out to be one of the most important selections the team has made since starting a makeover with the duo in charge of moulding the Seahawks into a championship club. Thomas is a two-time first-team All-Pro selection and regarded as the top safety in the NFL. The Seahawks would be a different defensive team if they didnt have Thomas skills at their disposal. His speed allows Thomas uncommon range in coverage. Hes become more disciplined staying within Seattles defensive framework, and Thomas has remained reliable at cleaning up any problems in the back. "I think the thing that comes to the front for me is this program has always been based on competition. When we look for players and coaches to add to our club were always looking for great competitors," Carroll said. "When we had the chance to take Earl, I dont know that I appreciated it as much as I do now the great competitor that he is. He has throughout the time hes been with us as a very young man, has played at the highest level he can generate every single day that hes played for us in this organization." Thomas gets the second major extension Seattle has announced this off-season after locking up Carroll through 2016. Now the question is if the Seahawks can get an extension done with All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman. Staying in-house has been the Seahawks priority this off-season; they also took care of bringing back defensive end Michael Bennett. "Sherm has everything under control. Hell take care of it," Thomas said. Schneider said the commitment to Thomas is another signal that Seattle doesnt intend on being a contender or a champion just once. "I think youre seeing an evolution of our development in terms of acquisition and how were building this team to be a consistent championship-calibre team," Schneider said. "We talk about it all the time we dont want to be a team that cruises in and cruises out." Thomas wanted to share the day with those close to him. He made sure one of the photo ops before the formal announcement included most of the defensive coaching staff, along with teammate Kam Chancellor, who signed an extension through 2017 last off-season. "Thats my family. Thats the people that have helped me," Thomas said. "... You learn from everybody, every opportunity you get. I dont waste my time. I invest everything." SAN FRANCISCO - For more than a quarter-century Tim McCarver was as much a part of October baseball as champagne celebrations. #16 Belgium Sven Kums Mens Jersey - Replica Yellow Third Short Shirt 2016 UEFA European Football Championship Soccer Adidas .On three networks, across four decades with four different play-by-play partners, McCarver was a near constant on the World Series soundtrack with his unique style as an analyst and familiar Tennessee twang.McCarver had been on the job for every World Series since 2000 before going on semiretirement after last years Fall Classic and being replaced in the Fox booth by Tom Verducci and Harold Reynolds. McCarver called 24 World Series overall, including all but two since 1989.But this October, McCarver is experiencing the Series just like millions of other viewers by watching back home in Florida instead of his usual spot in the broadcast booth. When youre working youre so immersed in your work that youre trying to put on a telecast or add to it without getting in the way of it and all the things that are involved in the business of baseball on television, McCarver said.On the other hand, you pick up part of your life as the viewing audience. I havent been able to do that for 35 years. Its kind of nice. I would imagine John Madden felt the same way his first year out. I dont know, he said.McCarver worked about 30 games locally this season calling St. Louis Cardinals games. But this is the first year he did no post-season games since 1984.The 73-year-old McCarver is still watching the games from his couch as an analyst, and complimented the broadcasts on Fox led by his old play-by-play partner, Joe Buck.In a brief phone conversation, he praised the way Kansas City dictates games with speed and defence, debated San Francisco manager Bruce Bochys decision not to start ace Madison Bumgarner on short rest in Game 4 and talked about how the dominance of the Royals bullpen changes the tenor of the game. But McCarver said his appreciation of the players rises when he doesnt have to call the games. He cited Lorenzo Cains outfield defence and Bumgarners tenacity, which reminds the former catcher of what he saw from St. Louis teammate Bob Gibson.I had a chance to admire the players from a technical standpoint while doing the games, he said. Now the admiration soars because I have a chance to really analyze some of the things for myself and not necessarily for the viewing audience.A big leaguer for 21 seasons, McCarver made his World Series announcing debut in 1985 for ABC when he was a late replacement for Howard Cosell in a booth with Al Michaels and Jim Palmer when Kansas City beat St. Louis in seven games.ABC and NBC alternated Series coverage in those days, so McCarver did a league championship series in 1986 and 88 before starting a near uninterrupted run of World Series coverage in 1989.In 2012, he was honoured with Hall of Fames Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence.I was fortunate enough to be involved in so many great moments in the post-season and so many great moments in the World Series, he said. Im thankful for that.McCarver was part of many memorable World Series moments, including the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco and Joe Torre winning his first title in 1996 with the New York Yankees. But three Series that all went seven games stand out above the others: Minnesota beating Atlanta in 1991 on Jack Morris 10-inning shutout in Game 7, Arizonas win over the Yankees in 2001 just months after the Sept. 11 attacks and St. Louis improbable comeback against Texas in 2011.That 2001 Series also might have provided the high point of McCarvers broadcasting career. Long known for his willingness to first guess decisions by managers, McCarver questioned the Yankees strategy of bringing the infield in with the bases loaded and one out in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth because of Mariano Riveras propensity for giving up broken-bat hits to lefties.Just one pitch later, Luis Gonzalez blooped a broken-bat single just barely cleared the drawn-in infield and gave Arizona the title.I said a lot of things over the course of doing 24 World Series, McCarver said. Some were right on the money and some werent and Im reminded of both. Divock Origi Jersey . He was 90. On Saturday night, Winnipegs strong offense was again accompanied by some fantastic pitching which gave the Fish a commanding victory.PORTLAND, Ore. -- Chris Bosh made his case: He wanted to go for the win. So with 0.5 seconds left Saturday night, he sank the 3-pointer that gave Miami a 108-107 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Playing without LeBron James because of injury, the Heat acquiesced to Boshs wishes on the play that won it. "My call at the end of the game was much more conservative," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I drew something up to get him on the move and he said, No, I want it for the 3. So he overruled it and became a prophet." Bosh finished with a season-high 37 points and added 10 rebounds to hand Portland its third loss at home this season. Wesley Matthews scored 23 points for the Blazers, who had won seven of eight. James injured his right groin and tweaked his left ankle Friday night in a 108-103 overtime loss at Sacramento that snapped Miamis six-game winning streak. He stayed in the game and finished with 33 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The four-time NBA MVP warmed up before Saturdays game but was declared inactive about an hour before the opening tip. Michael Beasley started in his place. The Blazers held a 94-91 lead halfway through the final quarter, but Bosh hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 96. He made another 3 that brought Heat players on the bench -- including James -- to their feet as Miami pulled in front 101-98 with 2:03 left. LaMarcus Aldridges layup narrowed it to 103-102 with 1:08 to go before Nicolas Batum made all three of his free throws after he was fouled beyond the arc by Dwyane Wade. Wade dunked to tie it at 105 with 26 seconds left, but the Heat fouled Batum with 7.7 seconds to go and he made both shots, setting up Boshs 3-pointer when Wade drove right and kicked it back to him well beyond the arc. Bosh wanted that 3. "In that situation I wanted to go for the win," Bosh said. "It was just how I felt at the moment. So we kind of changed it where Dwyane had an opportunity downhill and if he got double-teamed I was behind him for the jumper." Spoelstra praised Bosh for taking the lead in James absence. "He was terrific tonight, a true two-way player," the coach said. "He took the challenge for the majority of his minutes on one of the premier players in this league (Aldridge) and then had to shoulder a big-time offensive load. That takes incredible stamina but also the skill set that he put on display tonight on both ends of the court." Wade called the victory thee Heats first "signature win of the year. http://www.soccerbelgiumfansshop.com/Jordan-Lukaku-UEFA-European-Belgium-Jersey/. " Aldridge, who finished with 22 points, missed a short jumper at the buzzer. "It was obviously a disappointing loss. I was disappointed that we put ourselves in that position at the end of the game where it had to come down to a couple of plays at the end," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "Give Miami credit. We knew that they had a lot of good players and with James out, they had a lot of good players that can make plays and they did." Beasley appeared to get hurt himself early in the second half and came off the floor limping. He appeared in obvious pain while being attended to on the bench, but later returned to play. The two-time defending NBA champions also were without Chris Andersen (sore back), but Ray Allen (right knee tendinitis) and Wade (rest), who both missed the game against the Kings, were back in the lineup. James was the only Miami player to start the teams first 29 games. Listed as day-to-day, hell celebrate his 29th birthday on Monday when the Heat play at Denver to wrap up a four-game trip. Boshs follow shot gave the Heat a 19-12 lead midway through the first quarter. Aldridge hit a 21-foot jumper that tied it at 24 before the period was over. Damian Lillards 3-pointer gave Portland a 32-30 lead and Robin Lopez added a layup as the first quarter came to a close. The Blazers stretched the lead when Dorell Wrights layup off a dish by Mo Williams made it 43-34. Miami closed the gap but Portland held a 62-58 advantage at the break. Bosh and Matthews each had 18 points at the half. Boshs layup and Rashard Lewis 3-pointer put the Heat in front 71-69 midway through the third quarter. Portland quickly reclaimed the lead, pushing it to 86-79 on Williams 3-pointer. The Blazers led by as many as nine points. "Tonight we made a lot of mistakes. It was kind of a lesson that all of those things can come back to bite us," Lillard said. "But you cant win them all. Weve won so many of them and tonight we almost had another one."
