During his news conference Monday, Rivera said he may be asking too much of his new/young players in terms of the number of formations and personnel groupings they’ve been asked to learn.

”You put some young guys and new guys out on the field and it’s not like you had in the past,” Rivera said. ”You are missing some key elements. You are missing a Greg Olsen and a Ryan Kalil and some of the other veteran guys. When communications are made there are little hand signals and their tempo picks up and they can play faster. We’re in a situation where we have so many new guys that it takes a little while to register.”

The Panthers managed just a field goal in a 17-3 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Chicago scored two long defensive touchdown – one on a Cam Newton interception and another when rookie wide receiver Curtis Samuel fumbled a pitchout from Newton.

It’s the second time this season the Panthers have failed to score an offensive touchdown.

The loss dropped Carolina (4-3) out of first place in the NFC South. The Panthers visit Tampa Bay (2-4) on Sunday in a divisional matchup.

”There’s no excuse not to come in and find a way to win this football game Vikings Brian O'Neill Jersey ,” Newton said after the loss to the Bears. ”We squandered that opportunity, but I’m not feeling sorry for myself, nor do I expect anyone else to. On Sunday they had one pass of longer than 20 yards – that a 37-yard reception by Kelvin Benjamin seconds before halftime while the Bears were in prevent defense.

Newton sidestepped a question on whether Carolina’s lack of deep throws are the result of those plays not being called by offensive coordinator Mike Shula or just receivers not being open.

”Sorry, I can’t answer that question. I’m executing the play that is given to me and pretty much trying to check what the defense gives me Redskins Pernell McPhee Jersey ,” Newton said.

When questioned about the team’s offensive play calling, Rivera said he’s ”happy with what we’re doing on offense.”

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Texans have signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson and released Matt McGloin.

The moves come a day after coach Bill O’Brien said they had discussed the possibility of adding Colin Kaepernick in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to rookie Deshaun Watson.

Jay Cutler will start at quarterback next week, but other jobs on offense are up for grabs because some of the best players haven’t learned the playbook, an angry Gase said Friday.

His comments came less than 24 hours after the franchise’s worst loss in 20 years, a 40-0 humiliation at Baltimore. The Dolphins have now been outscored 152-92 this season, but they’re 4-3 thanks to four narrow victories.

”I’m tired of this,” Gase said. ”I’m tired of the offense being awful.”

The Dolphins rank last in the NFL in points, and with an average of 13.1 points per game, they’re on pace to break the franchise low set by the 1966 expansion team. A rash of missed assignments early in the season prompted Gase to simplify the playbook 49ers Dante Pettis Jersey , but doing so has made Miami too predictable, he said.

Gase blamed the mental mistakes on players failing to spend enough time studying the playbook, and said the problem has persisted since he became coach last year.

”We’re not putting the work in,” Gase said. ”If you can’t remember, you shouldn’t be in the NFL. Guys have got to take this stuff home and study it. We’ve got to find guys that will actually put forth effort to actually remember this stuff, and really it starts with our best players.”

The offensive line has been cited as the chief culprit for the sputtering offense, but Gase said the biggest issue with mental errors rests elsewhere. He specifically called out running back Jay Ajayi.

”The majority of the time the offensive line at least knows where to go to and what to do,” Gase said. ”You’ve got to get the other guys to know what to do to. We’ve got to get that fixed.”

Cutler was sidelined this week with cracked ribs, but ran and threw in practice Monday and lobbied unsuccessfully to play at Baltimore. He’ll start the next game Nov. 5 against Oakland, Gase said.

That might not be the only lineup change. Gase, who threatened a shake-up after Game 2 but made no changes, again said he’ll consider demoting starters.

”Those that want to come on board, great,” he said. ”Those that don’t, we’ll get rid of them. … I am going to play the guys that know what to do. The fan base might not like it Authentic Gordie Howe Jersey , but oh well. We’re the worst offense in football. It’s hard to go lower than that.”

Players are off until Tuesday, the closest they’ll come to a bye. They lost their scheduled bye in November when Hurricane Irma forced the season opener to be postponed until that week.

While the Dolphins are tied for the fifth-best record in the AFC, in their losses they’ve been outscored 80-6, with the only points coming on the final play of a game.

”We’ve been embarrassed three times,” Gase said.

The latest humiliation included being outrushed 174 yards to 45, and Matt Moore’s dismal performance ended any talk he should supplant Cutler as the No. 1 quarterback.

The coach acknowledged the Dolphins tackled poorly, but saved his anger for the offense. He didn’t criticize linebacker Kiko Alonso, who faces a possible suspension for a nasty hit that knocked Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco out of the game.

The Ravens’ dominant defense will have to continue the playoff push without standout cornerback Jimmy Smith.

Smith left in the second quarter after hurting his Achilles tendon without being touched.

Bears linebacker Pernell McPhee suffered a shoulder injury on the game’s opening drive and defensive end Mitch Unrein (knee) was hurt in the second quarter against San Francisco.

Vikings tight end David Morgan went out in the first quarter against Atlanta with a concussion. Falcons guard Andy Levitre sustained a triceps injury in the first quarter and didn’t return.

Dolphins center Mike Pouncey left against Denver in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury and cornerback Cordrea Tankersley left with an injured shoulder, returned and departed again because of an ankle injury.

Broncos linebacker Joseph Jones was helped off the field in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs center Mitch Morse was carted to the locker room with a foot injury. Zach Fulton replaced him and Bryan Witzmann took over Fulton’s spot at left guard in Kansas City’s 38-31 loss to the Jets.

Packers inside linebacker Jake Ryan left in the fourth quarter against Tampa Bay with a neck injury.

Colts center Mike Person, playing in place of starter Ryan Kelly (concussion) Cheap Marquez Valdes-Scantling Jersey , limped off the field in the fourth quarter against Jacksonville. Cornerback Pierre Desir (left shoulder) left in the first half and did not return.

Browns tight end Randall Telfer was evaluated for a possible concussion during the game against the Chargers. Defensive lineman Danny Shelton injured his wrist, apparently during the second half, and rookie defensive back Jabrill Peppers injured his knee in the second half.

Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree left against Arizona in the first half with an elbow injury and did not return.

Giants offensive lineman Chad Wheeler left the game at Oakland with a concussion.
