The Grill Is Gone
Zim's, the chain of San Francisco burger joints founded by a hungry GI who daydreamed of hamburgers and milk shakes during World War II, is no more.
The chain once numbered 25 restaurants, but beset by fast food giants and the city's changing palate, it quietly closed its last imitation van cleef and arpels butterfly necklace three sites last week.
"I was so angry and hurt," said , a Zim's waitress for 21 years, after the doors of the restaurant at 3490 California Street were closed and locked by the owner last week without a word to employees. "They never even told us they were sorry."
For 48 years, a Zimburger represented something more than a fast food burger in a sack. It was bigger, leaner and hotter. With it, according to owner , came "a slice of genuine Bermuda onion, a high quality bun and a very thick slice of tomato." Fast food joints, said Zimmerman, did the chain in.
"To have a Zimburger, fries and a Coke, you're talking eight bucks," said Zimmerman with a sigh. "At McDonald's or Burger King, it's about $3."
Zim's was founded in 1947 by Zimmerman's father, Art, who returned home from World War II determined to get the taste of K rations out of his mouth. The menu at the first Zim's at Steiner and Lombard streets featured all the stuff Art Zimmerman could not find in the mess line broiled cheese
burgers without filler and milk shakes made from ice cream instead of ice milk.
The senior Zimmerman said he ground the meat for the first Zimburger himself because his mother did not trust the butcher and insisted on seeing the meat before it became hamburger. It was a policy that continued until the end, he said yesterday.
CHAIN GREW QUICKLY
Before long, the orange Zim's marquee was everyplace. There were Zim's restaurants on a dozen San Francisco street corners. There were Zim's in Sacramento, Yuba City, Hayward, Woodside and in several locations in Marin County.
At Market Street and Van Ness Avenue, Zim's was open replica van cleef and arpel clover necklace around the clock. In the early morning hours, hookers, cabbies and cops often dined at adjacent tables. The cabbies and cops ate for half price, according to restaurant policy, but the hookers paid full rate.
The restaurant's slogan was "Zim's Where Else?" and there hardly seemed to be anywhere else without a Zim's.
SLOW ECONOMY HURT
According to Zimmerman, who took over the chain from his father during the 1980s, the economy went south and diners' tastes went to other points on the compass.
"In tough economic times, people's standards of quality have a tendency to diminish," he said. "People are willing to trade quality for other things."
A strike in 1978 and the watch your cholesterol gurus did not help, either. By 1992, Zim's was in Chapter 11. Over the summer, Zimmerman said, he realized the chain would have to close.
"It's like losing a child," the senior Zimmerman said yesterday, reflecting on the closing. "I started the business from nothing, and I'm sorry to see it go.
"I wish to God we could have kept going. But I can't complain. Friday, without prior word. About 100 were laid off.
"They came in, took the money out of the register, locked the door, and that was it," said a Zim's veteran.
No warning was given, said Steve Zimmerman, in order to avoid pilferage.
About 30 employees reopened the California street restaurant yesterday under a new name. The new Seva Restaurant, named for a Hindu god, features a melting pot menu of Zim's dishes and Thai cuisine. The menu cover features a dramatic, full color picture of the "god of destruction and reproduction."
A Zimburger is now a Seva burger. It still costs $4.49, but now fries are included.
"It's one way we can say thank you to the American people," said manager , a native of Thailand.
Asvakovith, who printed the new menus on the presses of his Buddhist temple in Millbrae, said he is a strict vegetarian who believes that Seva will understand having a hamburger named for him.
"This is a business," Asvakovith said, "so we must have an exception. We must learn to live together in this world, vegetarians and nonvegetarians."
Asvakovith was a Zim's waiter for 12 years. His partner, , was a Zim's manager for 12 years. Both men said that opening a restaurant in San Francisco, copy van cleef and arpels necklaces a town with a notoriously fickle palate, is a gamble.

sea Mining Yield an Underwater Gold Rush
Scientists have known about the bounty for decades, but only recently has rising demand for such commodities sparked interest in actually surfacing it. The treasure doesn't lie in the holds of sunken ships, but in natural mineral deposits that a handful of companies are poised to begin mining sometime in the next one to five years.
The deposits aren't too hard to find they're in seams spread along the seafloor, where natural hydrothermal vents eject rich concentrations of metals and minerals.
These underwater geysers spit out fluids with temperatures exceeding 600 And when those fluids hit the icy seawater, minerals precipitate out, falling to the ocean floor.
The deposits can yield as much as ten times the desirable minerals as a seam that's mined on land.
While different vent systems contain varying concentrations of precious minerals, the deep sea contains enough mineable gold that there's nine pounds (four kilograms) of it for every person on Earth, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Ocean Service.
At today's gold prices, that's a volume worth more than $150 trillion.
But a fledgling deep sea mining industry faces a host of challenges before it can claim the precious minerals, from the need for new mining technology and serious capital to the concerns of conservationists, fishers, and coastal residents.
The roadblocks are coming into view in the coastal waters of Papua New Guinea, where the seafloor contains copper, zinc, van cleef & arpels wedding ring replica and gold deposits worth hundreds of millions of dollars and where one company, Nautilus Minerals, hopes to launch the world's first deep sea mining operation.
Animation: How Robots Could Mine Seafloor
Last year, the Papua New Guinean government granted the Canadian firm a 20 year license to mine a site 19 miles (30 kilometers) off their coast, in the Bismarck Sea in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The company plans to mine the site, known as Solwara 1, by marrying existing technologies from the offshore oil and gas industry with new underwater robotic technologies to extract an estimated 1.3 million tons of minerals per year.
Samantha Smith, Nautilus's vice president for corporate social responsibility, says that ocean floor mining is safer, cleaner, and more environmentally friendly than its terrestrial counterpart.
"There are no mountains that need to be removed to get to the ore body," she says. "There's a potential to have a lot less waste . No people need to be displaced. Shouldn't we as a society consider such an option?"
But mining a mile below the sea's surface, where pressure is 160 times greater than on land and where temperatures swing from below freezing to hundreds of degrees above boiling, is trickier and more expensive than mining on terra firma.
Nautilus says it will employ three remote controlled construction tools that resemble giant underwater lawn mowers to cut the hard mineral ore from the seafloor and pump it a mile up to a surface vessel.
That vessel would be equipped with machinery that removes excess water and rock and returns it to the mining site via pipeline, an effort aimed at avoiding contaminating surface waters with residual mineral particles. The company would then ship the rock to a concentrator facility to remove the mineral from the ore. Geological Survey proved their existence in the Gal rift with cameras and a manned dive in the submersible Alvin.
The animal rich landscape and huge temperature shifts came as a surprise.
"When the first people went down there, and saw these things, they had no idea," says Mike Coffin, a geophysicist and executive director of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania in Australia. "The submersible had windows that could melt at temperatures lower than what was coming out of the vent."
And, in contrast to the desert like landscape that the scientists expected, it van cleef flower ring fake turns out that hydrothermal vents are home to lots of life: snails the size of tennis balls, seven foot long (two meter long) tubeworms, purple octopi, and all white crabs and skates.
It turns out that, far from the sun's life giving light, the same minerals now eyed by the mining industry support lively communities.
Now some researchers fear that deep sea mining could jeopardize those communities by altering their habitats before the systems have been fully explored and explained.
"We're still just grappling with this reality of commercialization of the deep sea," says Cindy Van Dover, director of Duke University's Marine Lab. "And scrambling to figure out what we need to know."
Van Dover was aboard the first manned biological exploration of the hydrothermal vents in 1982 and was the only woman to pilot the submersible Alvin. Despite the strides van cleef & arpels engagement ring replica that have been made in understanding the deep sea, she says, it's still a young science.
When it comes to the impacts of mining on any deep sea life, "there's a particular type of research that needs to be done," she says. "We haven't yet studied the ecosystem services and functions of the deep sea to understand what we'd lose.
"We don't yet know what we need to know," Van Dover says.
Conservationists also say they want to know more about the vent ecosystems and how they will be mined.
"The whole world is new to the concept of deep sea mining," says Helen Rosenbaum, coordinator of the Deep Sea Mining Campaign, a small activist group in Australia that campaigns against mining the Solwara 1 site.
"This is going to be the world's first exploitation of these kinds of deep resources. The impacts are not known, and we need to apply precautionary principles," she says. "If we knew what the impacts were going to be, we could engage in a broad based debate."
Rosenbaum says some communities in Papua New Guinea are raising concerns about the sustainability of local livelihoods in the face of mining and say they aren't receiving the information they need.
At today's gold prices, that's a volume worth more than $150 trillion.

shot studio on wheels
The bright magenta van parked alongside Pan Pacific Park near the Grove could be mistaken for any one of the scores of gourmet van cleef engagement ring price replica food trucks roaming the streets of Los Angeles.
But passersby did a double take as they read the sign written in white text across its side:
In a city where a head shot is an actor's calling card, it used to be easy to get a studio quality photo. But many of the traditional photo studios have closed, unable to get enough business as more people use cellphones and digital cameras to snap pictures.
Actor turned photographer Adam Hendershott, who sports black rimmed glasses and a scruffy brown beard, said many of his Hollywood friends complained they were having a tough time finding a photographer.
They combed through Craigslist until they found an 18 year old van cleef and arpels diamond ring replica Chevy Step Van that was once used as a bread truck. They had to remove the 400 pound metal bread racks and sweep up crumbs scattered across the floor.
Now, there are no traces of bread (probably a good thing, seeing how van cleef & arpels ring price replica gluten phobic many actors are). Instead of racks, a bolted in chair sits next to a table with makeup and hair products neatly organized. A long pole hangs across from the chair, for outfit changes.

In the "studio" space, a large light hangs from the back of the truck and a desktop computer screen sits to the left so people can review the photos on the spot sometimes pointing out nitpicky things they'd like to fix, like blemishes or sticking out hair.
Outside the truck, two plastic hot pink flamingos (nicknamed Fred and Bobbles) greet customers. The day's clients are listed in orange and pink chalk on a blackboard hung next to the door.
Just above the list, scrawled in cursive, a greeting reads "Welcome aboard!"The old school head shot industry seems to be going the way of the flashbulb.
In April 2013, portrait company CSI Corp. closed thousands of locations it ran out of Sears and Wal Mart stores. Affordable mom and pop studios are becoming rare.
High end studios that charge thousands of dollars for head shots are still around, but that price is too hefty for struggling actors.
On average, 28 year old actress Ashley Platz said, those photographers charge up to $800.
"And, you know, that's like rent for a month," Platz said.
The digital age has given rise to amateur photographers who charge $100 for work done out of makeshift studios in their homes or garages. Their Craigslist ads some sketchier than others include "Headshots you'll love 100% guaranteed!" to "Need new headshots? Of course you do!"
That has squeezed professional photographers like Alan Weissman. He has made a living for more than two decades running a Los Angeles studio that caters to mostly fresh faced actors but also celebrities including Morgan Freeman, Billy Crystal and Cameron Diaz.
"When I started I didn't have much competition. There were 15 or 20 people doing what I did," said Weissman, who charges $395 for two basic head shot looks and 50 8 by 10 photos. "Now it's just awful. People aren't looking for quality anymore they look for whoever will do photos fast and cheap."
Weissman said that although the concept behind the Headshot Truck is interesting, the business seems more like a "gimmick."
"I love the idea I think it's totally cool but I don't think it's serving the actor," he said. "I'm old school. They aren't at the next level."
Weissman said even some of his interns "have websites before they are real photographers" and advertise head shot services online. The increase in cheaper competition has led to less work.
"You used to have to know your craft," he said. "People don't know what they are looking for anymore."
"A picture of someone's face shouldn't cost an arm and a leg," Adam Hendershott, a 31 year old Burbank native, said with the air of someone who's used that line before. The truck's basic package is $250.

Ten great sporting moments
Many men have run faster since but the four minute mile was a defining moment in the history of athletics as Roger Bannister broke the magical barrier on a balmy evening at Iffley Road, Oxford, on May 6, 1954.
They said it couldn't be done but Bannister, in his final season before concentrating his energies into his medical career, pushed back the fake vintage alhambra necklace boundaries on May 6, 1954, as, with Chris Brasher later to become the London Marathon pioneer as his pacemaker, he loped round the track in three minutes 59.4 seconds and set the standard for others to follow.
2. Jim Laker makes cricket history, 1956
Jim Laker spun his way into cricket history by taking 19 of the 20 Australian wickets in England's victory in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
The Aussies knew all about Laker, who had taken four hat tricks against them in the 1951, 53 and 55 Ashes series, but he delivered a devastating blow at Old Trafford, with nine for 37 in the first innings and 10 for 53 in the second.
Laker, who finished the series with 46 wickets at an average of 9.60, was denied the feat of taking all 20 by Surrey "spin twin" Tony Lock, who captured the other wicket to fall.
3. Henry Cooper faces Cassius Clay, 1963
Thirty thousand fans at Wembley Stadium could scarcely believe their eyes as Enery's 'Ammer exploded on the jaw of brash young Cassius Clay, sending him crashing. Londoner Henry Cooper had thrown the most famous punch in British boxing history to become a national hero to this day.
The saga of the split glove, as manager Angelo Dundee desperately tried to give the future Muhammad Ali time to regain his senses, has gone down in fistic folklore and Clay recovered to gash Cooper to a bloody fifth round defeat and go on to become "The Greatest".
4. Geoff Hurst helps England to World Cup victory, 1966
Geoff Hurst lashed in the shot which completed his hat trick, Kenneth Wolstenholme uttered the immortal van cleef necklace replica alhambra words "they think it's all over, it is now," the gap toothed Nobby Stiles danced a jig on the Wembley turf and a nation celebrated the greatest triumph in the history of English football as Bobby Moore collected the Jules Rimet trophy from Her Majesty The Queen.
The achievement of Sir Alf Ramsey's England team on that July afternoon will never be forgotten by those old enough to have been lucky enough to have been there or watched it on TV.
5. Lynn Davies sets British long jump record that lasts 34 years, 1968
Lynn "The Leap" Davies, already the 1964 Olympic long jump champion, soared into the headlines again, when he broke the British record with a jump of 7.87 metres in Berne, Switzerland, four years later but it was only with the passing of the decades that the true enormity of his achievement became apparent.
And it was only a few weeks ago, 34 years on, that the Welshman's record finally fell to Chris Tomlinson. Davies, proud to have held fake van cleef and arpels necklace alhambra the record for so long, said: "When you think of the advances over the years, it's puzzling why it lasted."
6. Red Rum wins historic third Grand National, 1977
Red Rum became the only horse in the history of the Grand National to win the famous Aintree race three times.
Trained in the sea on Southport beach by Ginger McCain, in 1973 he overhauled the big Australian horse Crisp for his first National triumph, a year later he defied 12 stone to win again and, after finishing second in 1975 and 76, returned at the age of 12 for one final triumph.
Carrying top weight of 11st 8lbs, he ran easily throughout the race, took the lead soon after Becher's Brook and went on to win by a remarkable 25 lengths. A true National hero.
7. Virginia Wade wins Wimbledon, 1977
The age of the celebrity superstars of tennis picking up around half a million pounds for winning Wimbledon, was light years away as Virginia Wade, in her 16th attempt, finally won the women's singles title with a 4 6 6 3 6 1 victory over Holland's Betty Stove.
Wade, almost 32, wearing her lilac cardigan without a sponsor's logo in sight, received her trophy from The Queen the last time Her Majesty graced Wimbledon's Centre Court and the last time a British player won a singles title there. Will she be tempted back if Tim Henman makes the men's final this year?
8. Ian Botham hits the Aussies for six in the Ashes, 1981
Ian Botham had resigned the captaincy after the second Test at Lord's following a poor run of results and England, one down in the Ashes, series looked to be heading for defeat again.
At 135 for seven, they needed 92 runs just to make Australia bat again. Enter the irrepressible Botham, who had already dismissed six Australians in their first innings and made a half century in England's first knock.

Rooney Hails England Squad For Euros
England head to France for Euro 2016 in confident mood after their 100% success in qualifying Group E, and are up against Russia, Slovakia and Wales in the group stage in June.
Captain Rooney scored seven goals in the qualifying campaign, including a record breaking 50th to take him above Sir Bobby Charlton in England's all time goalscorer list.
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, says that while England's versatility and quality is clear to see, consistency will be the key to any success.
"I feel we've got a very good imitation van cleef and arpel clover necklace squad. It's probably the first time I've felt the squad is capable in replica vintage alhambra necklace any given game of matching any team," he said. "But obviously it's one thing having that, and another being able to do that consistently throughout a tournament.
"We've got players who can play anywhere across that front line. Myself, Jamie Vardy, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge can play out wide too. It's always difficult for opponents as well.
"You never know with the players we've got how well they can do. We've had a good European Qualifiers campaign, but we need to make sure that we don't slack, that we keep going and keep pushing forward, and give ourselves every possible chance."
The Manchester United skipper's best position for England is highly debated, but Sky sources understand Rooney wants to play as a holding midfielder at Euro 2016.
Rooney has been used both as a striker and as a central midfielder by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal this season, but it is understood Hodgson will use him on the left wing in a 4 3 3 system following conversations between the two.
Another option would be to use the 30 year old at the top of a midfield diamond or as a No 10, where he has also been used by United this season, and Rooney feels he is suitable for a number of positions.
"As a player you are always adapting," said Rooney. "You adapt to your teammates, replica van cleef & arpels alhambra necklace you adapt to the different coaches you are working under. It depends what the coaches want from you.
"Throughout my career I've adapted to different situations and different teams I've played in, and I have no problem doing it. In football you need players who can play in different positions. I've always felt like I can play in different positions.
"But I've always believed I am capable of playing in different positions. I think you saw in World Cup 2006 with Owen Hargreaves, he was probably England's best player, purely for the fact he could play in different positions.
"To have players like that in your squad is really important. The good thing that Roy has now is that he can look at the opponents and pick a midfield which is best for beating the opponent. We haven't always had that.
"He could change the whole 11 if he had to now, and we would still have the chance of winning the game."
Rooney was made captain after the World Cup in 2014 following Steven Gerrard's international retirement, something he says he takes immense pride in.
With several young players coming through, including Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Marcus Rashford and John Stones, Rooney is keen to take on a leadership role, but not without the help of a small group of other senior team members.
Rooney said: "I felt I was the natural successor to Steven as captain, and the manager did too. It's something I was delighted to do, and I want to do it to be successful as well.
"It's something I really take pride in and want to do to the best of my ability. I think the young lads in the squad, they've helped a lot, I feel it's an exciting time for English football with the squad we have."

The Failure of the Schlieffen Plan
In the early 20th century the German General Staff viewed the Schlieffen Plan, created by its Chief, Count Alfred von Schlieffen, in 1905, as a blueprint for avoiding a dreaded two front war by defeating France in six weeks or less. A speedy victory over France would allow the German Army to redeploy against Russia before the Tsar could fully mobilise his huge country. When Schlieffen retired in 1906 his successor, Helmuth von Moltke the Younger, modified the plan and executed it to near victory in the first month of the First World War. The German offensive was stopped just short of Paris at the Battle of the Marne, killing any hope of a quick victory. Count von Schlieffen's plan failed because of a combination of intrinsic flaws, poor modifications, and imperfect execution.
The plan focused on two central elements. Firstly, one section of the French border, between France and Belgium, was much more lightly defended than the rest (which was defended by the powerful Maginot line and the natural barrier of the Alps). Secondly, the German Army could mobilize more rapidly than the armies of the other European powers. The plan sought to exploit these two facts by calling for a sweeping attack by more than half of the German Army through Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg (violating the neutrality of these nations). This powerful German right wing would force a French surrender in 42 days by capturing most of the French army in an envelopment battle around Paris. The German Army would be free to complete its wide U turn (it would end up facing back towards the German border) and would then be rapidly shifted to the Eastern front by rail.
However, when Count Alfred von Schlieffen devised his invasion plan it was merely a theoretical exercise. Though Kaiser Wilhelm II had asked for a plan that would allow the German Empire to fight an eventual two front war, Schlieffen's plan was less an actual battle plan and more a document calling for the addition of twenty divisions to the German Army. These necessary divisions were never added and the plan, van cleef arpels between finger ring fake though it was modified, was never significantly questioned, becoming the one and only invasion plan of the German General Staff.
This lack of alternatives constituted a serious problem because the Schlieffen Plan, partly because it was originally a theoretical document, left no room for error. Every German soldier was expected to march the maximum projected distance every day while brushing aside enemy opposition. Yet the average German soldier had, a few weeks earlier, been a civilian called up van cleef and arpels perlee ring price fake for service. It had perhaps been years since they had been trained and put in reserve, and there was no time for additional training because, as explained above, Germany's rapid mobilisation was one of its big wartime avantages. In addition the supply system, which relied van cleef and arpels alhambra ring fake heavily on horse drawn wagons since there weren't enough trains, was not nearly as efficient as predicted and therefore slowed the rate of advance even more. Instead of the 25 miles a day that the Schlieffen Plan necessited, the rate of march was almost half of that.
The plan also relied on a series of underestimations of the enemy's capabilities. For example, the plan allocated little time to the complete occupation of Belgium. Indeed the entire invasion of Belgium was viewed as basically a march, and the expected rate of advance was almost the same as that in friendly territory. In reality the Belgians proved to be a much tougher foe than the plan assumed, holding out tenaciously by defending cities and fortresses. In addition, the Germans didn't think that Britain would honour its alliance with Belgium, established by the London Treaty of 1839, and would instead remain neutral. The plan itself assumed that it would take the British two months to bring a significant force across the channel. Instead, the elements of the German Army advancing down the coast ran into the British Expeditionary Force (placed near the coast by the French General Staff because it assumed there would be no fighting in that section of the front). The 75,000 strong BEF further delayed the advance and forced them to turn away from the coast sooner than planned.
Moltke's modifications also contributed greatly to reducing the chances of German success. As well as placing an additional 180,000 soldiers in East Prussia, he decided to weaken the right wing (sweeping through Belgium) in order to strengthen the left wing (holding Alsace Lorraine, a German territory since 1871). This lessened the power of the integral part of the plan. Von Schlieffen had predicted that the French would surge forward into Alsace Lorraine upon the outbreak of war (which is exactly what they did), allowing the immensely powerful German right wing to envelope and destroy the French Army. He was willing to sacrifice territory on the left since this would draw the French armies away from Paris and since any lost territory would have been easily recovered by the envelopment. Moltke, however, was not willing to sacrifice territory and instead took men from the point of decision. In practice this meant that the French armies were kept closer to Paris and that the decisive attack was robbed of its strength.
The last nail in the coffin of the Schlieffen Plan was Moltke's decision, just before the Battle of the Marne, to move 80,000 soldiers to the Eastern Front. This decision was prompted by the surprising speed with which the Russians had started advancing into Germany (the Schlieffen Plan having once again underestimated the enemy). In any case the shift took even more soldiers from the point of decision. Two days before these reinforcements arrived the German forces in East Prussia delivered a resounding defeat to the Russians at the Battle of Tannenberg, virtually destroying the Russian Second Army and making the reinforcements completely pointless.
Overall, Moltke's reluctance to sacrifice territory both in Alsace Lorrain and in East Prussia doomed the Count von Schlieffen's plan to failure. The German Army simply did not have enough men to hold the entirety of the German Empire's borders and to simultaneously mount a decisive attack to knock France out of the war quickly. Blame can of course also be attributed to the faulty assumptions of the Schlieffen Plan as well as to the Kaiser's focus on building up the German Navy, which robbed the Army in favour of a part of the military which would never be strong enough to compete with its rival, Great Britain. However, the execution of the Schlieffen Plan fell to Moltke and, in the end, he was the one who failed to secure a victory that lay within his grasp. Two months into the war the lines had stabilised into the trenches that would come to characterise the First World War.

Strategic Planning for Churches
"Where there is no vision, the people will perish."These words, taken from the Holy Bible demonstrate the need for churches, like other organizations, to map out their strategic plans. Strategic planning has always been viewed with skepticism by many church leaders who find formal planning a formidable exercise, for which most of them are not trained. There is also a view that planning is not biblical. However, the Bible does teach planning both implicitly and explicitly. For example, while studying creation, it is obvious that God worked with a master van cleef emerald ring fake plan. However, this has been long forgotten with time, leading to severe repercussions in the recent years, like the inability of the church in meeting their congregation needs and the decline in the number of church goers. This has led to the need for the introduction of strategic planning to mobilize and motivate the church in the achievement of their goals.
What is Strategic Planning
The concept of strategic planning is a business based discipline, which serves as a roadmap for the organizations to visualize their goals and know how to get there. Although this definition can be applied in this case, a suitable church specific definition of strategic planning was provided by Van Auken in 1989 where he described planning as the process of turning vision into reality. Others, like Gangel, propounded the fact that church leaders should actively engage in planning. He stated that "The development of goals in a church or any Christian organization must be accompanied by the development of a plan whereby those goals can be achieved". Effective planning is, thus, a prerequisite for the success of any organization and that includes a church as well.
The Steps for Strategic Planning for Churches
The strategic planning process for churches is to match the resources of the ministry and the available opportunities. The church should pen down these steps for their strategic planning purposes.
Step 1: van ring fake Define the purpose of the mission or the reason for its being. This includes bringing together the right people van cleef and arpels wedding ring fake who would be responsible for visualizing and incorporating what the organization is to become. A good statement of purpose sets the boundaries in the realization of the goals and brings clarity as to what the church is to do.
Step 2: Analyzing the environment is an important part of any planning process, which would give the church an overview of the external environment and the internal strength and weaknesses. A very useful method in this case would be a swot analysis, which is an acronym for strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Strength and weaknesses stand for the internal factors and the opportunities and threats stand for the external elements involved. A detailed swot analysis can help the church realize the factors on which it has control and act on them.
Step 3: How does the church establish its objectives? The answer lies in the question, where do you want to go? Objectives are the desired results which also serve as the yardstick for performance measure. List down the objectives that the church needs to achieve in clear, concise statements. These objectives should be in tune with the church's overall goals and should also enable it to mobilize the energy and resources for the same.
Step 4: Drawing up a plan of action should involve defining the overall strategy and then operational plans should be developed. Each plan should provide a definite view of what is needed.
Step 5: This is the step that would proceed once the plan has been implemented and results have been achieved. The results could be attendance, baptisms, or even a change in behavior, but these need to be appraised and controlled. The steps to then alter the objectives, to adjust activities, people or finances have to be made.
The strategic plan is a blueprint that would guide the church or the ministry in the implementation of their plans. As churches increasingly face declining numbers and finances, a strategic plan can go a long way in addressing the issues of the constantly changing world. It is vital that church leaders from around the world be provided with the skills and the training for incorporating the strategic planning in their ministries.
