Noise Pollution

In light of the current controversy regarding the exhibition of photographs by Bill Henson, I thought about some occasions when rock n roll has generated similar debate.

Of course rock's lyrics have come under Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet perle diamond imitation scrutiny since its very beginnings, but sometimes the container in which the music is sold and stored has also been the subject of controversy and censorship.

Album covers have been controversial for a number of reasons and have been the target of community, legal and even governmental concerns as well as record companies and retailers who have objected to them. Even rock royalty like the Rolling Stones and The Beatles have had dust ups with their record companies over their choice of cover art.

In 1966 EMI Records decided to put out a compilation of the Beatles' material called Yesterday And Today, compiling tracks from the Help, Rubber Soul and Revolver albums without consultation replica Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet gold and diamond or consent from the band themselves and with little regard to the care that they took with sequencing their albums. Perhaps because of this, the then lovable Mop Tops decided to use a photograph that has since been referred to as "The Butcher Shop" cover for the album's release. Capitol Records in America pressed 750, 000 copies but only a handful were sent out for promotional purposes. The adverse reaction to the cover was so strong that the company immediately withdrew all copies for sale, pasting an inferior substitute cover on top of the original and re marketing them. This led to fans peeling back the cover to get a glimpse of the original, copies of which have become highly sought after items in the record collector market, fetching up to $40, 000! The album was The Beatles' only commercial failure.

The Rolling Stones' choice of a cover depicting toilet wall graffitti for their 1968 album Beggars Banquet was rejected by their record companies; the band insisted, but after a couple of months standoff the band relented and substituted a simple imitation invitation card cover instead.

But as with the current headline brouhaha, sex and nudity has been the main bone of contention.

The most public and controversial case concerned not an album cover, but an insert that Jello Biafra chose for The Dead Kennedys' Frankenchrist album in 1985. The offending piece Landscape No. 20: was by Swiss artist HR Geiger, best known for his art design for the Alien movie, and led to the band being bought to trial for distribution of harmful material to minors after the mother of a 13 year old girl complained. Biafra's windows were smashed when the police raided his home and dragged him out of bed to arrest him. The case dragged on and led the band to the brink of bankruptcy, Frank Zappa, Little Steven Van Zandt and Paul Kantner appeared to support the band at the trial, before the case was finally dismissed. The band broke up and Jello had material for his spoken word performances for years.

In 1968 Jimi Hendrix's musical masterpiece, and his only Number One album Electric Ladyland, also experienced cover controversy. However the cover was not a deliberate decision by Jimi but the result of mistakes. Apparently Jimi wanted a photo of children by Linda Eastman for the cover, his record company ignored him and his English record company grew impatient and without consulting Hendrix produced a cover photograph of naked women on a black background. The American record company produced their own substitute cover which has since become the official cover; Jimi always disliked the British nude cover.

John and Yoko's Two Virgins album featured full frontal nudity on the front cover and full rear nudity on the backcover, creating controversy and outrage leading to its impoundment in America as obscene and retailers selling it a brown paper sleeve to cover the offending images.

British super group Blind Faith featuring Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker and Rick Gretsch did not have a name when they commissioned a cover shot for their only album in 1969. The resulting cover of a topless nude 12 year old girl holding a model plane created a storm of controversy and led their American record company to substitute a shoddy coverinstead. The fact that the cover did not have any name or credits on it may have also given the record company commercial concern. The photographer called his piece "Blind Faith" which the band adopted as their name.

Agent provocateur Malcolm McLaren, fresh from his great rock n roll swindle, created tribal pop band Bow Wow Wow, featuring 14 year old Annabella Lwin as their lead singer. When she appeared nude on the cover of their 1982 EP in a supposed pop homage to Manet's The Luncheon On The Grass, her outraged mother instigated a Scotland Yard investigation into child exploitation.

In later years Nirvana used a photograph of a naked male baby on the cover of Nevermind, the record company and retailers used strategically placed stickers to obscure the offending male member. Janes Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual album cover by Perry Farrell led to retail chains boycotting the album, so he created a "clean" cover in plain white with the first amendment protecting free speech printed on it. Guns'n'Roses used a painting by artist Robert Williams on their Appetite For Destruction album cover but when retailers objected substituted the now well known tattoo cover. Hard to tell if it was the stars and stripes G string , the crotch shot or the pubic hair peeping out, or perhaps all three, but The Black Crowes' Amorica album cover from Hustler magazine was disembodied and de pubed by their record company. The offending Art wasn't on the cover itself but inside, while the outside has a computer rendored "ribcage", inside featured a full frontal naked man (whom was quite "large"), when the cover was held up to light it appead that the ribcage on the front hugged him. Quite a nice bit of album art that was cleverly thought out. Wal Mart replaced it with a giant barcode.

In my experience, there's quite a few album covers that might be considered obscene, but generally speaking they're by bands that are too obscure for the censors/media to take much notice of, if any.

A couple of years ago I went to the US and at one stage wandered through a Walmart and browsed through the extremely limited CD section there. They actually sold the "Bloodhoung Gang" CD "Hooray for Boobies" in a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet gold high imitation cheap brown paperbag cover, titled only "Hooray". What made this especially ironic was that a few shelves to the left of the CD section they had a section where they sold shot guns, massive knifes, bullets, etc. But I'm sure some 5 year olds potentially being exposed to the word "boobies" does a lot more damage than a shot gun.

But for really horrendous artwork, check out covers by a band called "The Handsome Beasts". Not so much explicit as, uhm. suggestive.

Jets looking at thin crop of tight ends

Just two tight ends Tyler Eifert of the Bengals out of Notre Dame and Eric Ebron of the Lions out of North Carolina have gone in the first round of the past six NFL drafts. Howard should make it three in seven drafts.

Michigan's Jake Butt, 6 5, 248, who suffered a torn ACL in the Wolverines' 33 32 loss to Florida State in the Orange Bowl, is still considered the second best tight end.

"It's a shame,'' one scout said. "I really had him alhambra ring copy ranked high. Now, you probably can get him later and wait on him. He's a complete player, you just have to know you might not have him for a year.''

The same scout praised the 6 6, 251 pound Howard.

"Sky is the limit,'' he said. "He's going to go high in the draft, because he's a great kid how much is the copy van cleef & arpels ring and teams are going to fall in love van cleef alhambra yellow gold replica with him. He's a good player, too. He's gotten a lot better.

After the top two there are a bunch of tight ends with limitations. That group includes Mississippi's Evan Engram, 6 3, 235; Clemson's Jordan Leggett, 6 5, 250; Virginia Tech's Bucky Hodges, 6 7, 245; and Miami's David Njoku, 6 4, 245.

South Alabama's Gerald Everett (6 3, 242) is getting a lot of media hype. Scouts aren't as sure about him.

"I don't see it,'' one scout said. "He's just OK.''

Arkansas' Jeremy Sprinkle, 6 6, 255, and Michigan State's Josiah Price, 6 4, 252, are considered mid to late round picks who are the best blockers of the group.

Just a Pack of Predators

BERKELEY Huey P. Newton and Eldridge Cleaver may be dead, but the Black Panthers have never really gone away. This bunch of thugs continues to capture the imagination of American intellectuals. In the last couple of weeks, the group has been celebrated at a Wheelock College conference titled "The Black Panther Party in Historical Perspective" and on a National Public Radio program that considered the group's place in American life.

The conference in Boston was called, said one of its organizers, because "far too often in looking at the Panthers, people have relied on kind of a negative portrayal of the party." Some 40 new papers examining the Panther legacy were presented, but few of them dealt with the dark side of the Panther movement.

That's the side I know well, having documented and written about it since the late 1970s, along with a number of other journalists. Newton was a thug even before he co founded the organization with Bobby Seale in 1966. In 1964, he was convicted of assault after stabbing an unarmed man at a party with a steak knife. He bragged in his autobiography, "Revolutionary Suicide," of hanging out in hospital parking lots to pull off strong arm robberies.

Newton and the Panthers started out monitoring Oakland police to keep them from abusing ghetto blacks. They burst into the public consciousness in the wake of a police shootout in which an officer was killed. Newton was initially found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but the conviction was later overturned.

By 1968, fault lines within the organization had developed. Newton and Cleaver had a falling out, and party chapters van cleef rose gold bracelet fake across the country divided into respective camps. Those on the Cleaver side were known for black nationalism and revolutionary violence. Those on Newton's side claimed to embrace his vision of social reform "pending the revolution," and they did establish a breakfast program and a Panther school. But at the same time, Newton was running the organization as an elaborate front for his criminal enterprises.

The party in Oakland operated a virtual vice ring out of Newton's favorite nighttime haunt, the Lamp Post bar. From its smoky recesses, the Panthers under Newton conducted a reign of terror, punishing rank and file females for even minor "infractions" by turning them out as prostitutes. Newton led an extortion racket against Oakland's bars, nightclubs, pimps and dope dealers, and his handpicked squad of collectors turned nasty whenever anyone failed to pay protection money. The Fox Oakland theater was torched two times in 1973, its owner told me, after the replica van cleef bracelet owner refused to hire a quota of Panthers and to pay for protection.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, a string of murders was believed by police investigators to have connections to the Panthers. A Berkeley nightclub owner turned up dead in his car at the San Francisco airport. Panther Fred Bennett was killed. Betty Van Patter, the Panthers' white bookkeeper, was murdered after being summoned to a meeting at the Lamp Post. Most of the crimes remain officially unsolved. Newton was, however, eventually charged with the murder of a 17 year old prostitute as well as other violent felonies. He fled to Cuba in the summer of 1974 after the prostitute's shooting, but by then he was already well known around Oakland for his cocaine fueled violent rampages. He was eventually acquitted of the murder, after what the district attorney termed "a planned assassination" attempt of the "most important witness" in the case.

There were, of course, many serious and dedicated Black Panthers around the country, people who had no idea that Newton operated a parallel organization devoted to crime. But Newton sometimes used their efforts to line his pockets and those of his fellow thugs. Early on, Panthers everywhere collected money for sickle cell anemia research. Newton later admitted that effort was a con, and that his organization siphoned off the money collected. Later, government and foundation grant money for social programs was similarly diverted, a fact exposed by an Oakland Tribune investigation.

The organization espoused a Marxist egalitarianism, but while its leader sipped Courvoisier in his penthouse, the rank and file were paid little, lived in cramped dormitories and worked up to 20 hours a fake van cleef and arpels bracelet day. Panthers who strayed from the party's rules were, in the early days, made to stand for hours in "mud holes" filled with cold water. In later times, they were beaten.

If the Wheelock conference wanted to examine the real legacy of the Panthers, its participants should have pored over the cold statistics showing a spike in drive by shooting deaths and gang warfare that took place in Oakland in the decade following the Panthers' demise. The Black Panther Party had so fetishized the gun as part of its mystique that young men in the ghetto felt incomplete without one.

Mayonnaise to make at home

I don't make my own mayonnaise very often. When I do, it's usually in emergency situations when I need some for a recipe, ran out of the store bought kind and did not have the time or inclination to go out and buy more.

When I make that homemade mayonnaise, I'm reminded again that it's not that difficult. I also become mesmerized by the fact that at some point in time, someone decided that blending raw egg yolks and oil could lead to something so inviting. I also wonder why the heck they called it mayonnaise?

Although there are a few theories on how it got that name, in John Ayto's book, An A Z of Food Drink, he writes it's now generally accepted, based on the early spelling mahonnaise, that the term literally means "of Mahon." That book goes on to say the sauce was so named to commemorate the taking of Port Mahon on the Spanish Island of Minorca in 1756.

That invasion was led by the Duc de Richelieu, a title in the French nobility that at that time was held by Armand de Vignerot du Plessis. In An A Z of Food Drink it says it's presumed that his personal chef or even the duke himself created this sauce.

Why did they make it with egg yolks and oil?

Well, according to notes by Frenchman Grimod de la Reynire, a bon vivant who wrote a series of culinary almanacs from 1803 to 1812, it's believed those taking part in the attack on Port Mahon were so low in supplies that they were reduced to eggs and oil.

The Oxford Companion to Food says as a French word mayonnaise, which means, "the sauce," first replica van cleef bracelet appeared in print in 1806. That book also notes that the English borrowed the word and its first recorded use was in the 1840s.

The method for making mayonnaise likely hasn't change a whole lot since it was first made. Place egg yolks in a bowl, and then very slowly whisk in oil until a thick, emulsified sauce is created. Flavouring that mayonnaise is a bit of Dijon mustard and something acidic, such as white wine vinegar and/or lemon juice, salt and sometimes white pepper, depending on whose recipe you're using.

These days, of course, instead of making van cleef bracelet fake mayonnaise by hand, you can also whip it up in a food processor.

Most often, a more neutral tasting type of oil is used for mayonnaise, such as peanut oil, vegetable oil or regular olive oil. These oils will give it richness, but not add too strong a taste that overpowers and negatively affects the flavour of what you make with the mayonnaise.

That said, stronger tasting oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, can still be used to make mayonnaise. But it's usually only done when you want that flavour profile, such as when making garlic rich aioli with the mayonnaise.

In Marie Simmons' award winning book, The Good Egg, she writes there's a slight risk of bacterial growth from sauces such as mayonnaise made with raw egg yolks. But she says they can be minimized if you observe safe handling practices and precautions.

Simmons says to use the freshest eggs you can get for mayonnaise. They should also have ultra clean shells, be crack free and be kept refrigerated. After the mayonnaise is made, it should be kept refrigerated and used within two days.

Simmons adds that you should never serve a sauce made with raw eggs to someone who is elderly, very young, pregnant or has a weakened immune system. You know you're buying this type of Marmite because it will have both French and English on the label.

Use this homemade version of the famous French sauce for sandwiches, salads and dressings, or alongside fish, such as salmon.

Set a damp tea towel on a work and nestle your mixing bowl in it. (This will prevent the bowl from sliding around when you make the mayonnaise.)

Place egg yolks and mustard in the bowl and whisk until blended.

Using a 1/4 tsp measure, while whisking constantly, gradually dribble and mix in the oil. Once you've added about 1/4 of the oil this way, you can gradually begin to very slowly drizzle in the remaining oil in a narrow stream.

Adding all of the oil will take a few minutes, but it's OK to take a break if needed to rest your arm as long as the mayonnaise is holding together. Once all the oil is added, mix in the lemon juice (and/or vinegar) and salt. Transfer mayonnaise to tight sealing container, cover and refrigerate until needed. Use mayonnaise within two days.

Eric's options: To make mayonnaise in a food processor, place egg yolks and mustard in its bowl and pulse until completely blended. With the machine running, slowly add the oil in a thin and narrow stream until a thick, emulsified mixture is created. Flavour mayonnaise with lemon juice (and/or vinegar) and salt. knock off van cleef and arpels bracelets Store and use as described above. His latest is The Great Rotisserie Chicken Cookbook (Appetite by Random House). His columns appear in the Life section Wednesday and Sunday.

Joe Walsh proves he's one of the guitar greats

To wit: Joe Walsh. While not technically a superstar, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and celebrated Eagles guitarist brings something special to the table on every song.

Something very special, indeed.

Walsh who made his Victoria debut on Tuesday during an outdoor concert at Esquimalt's Bullen Park came out of the gate slow and steady, dropping his beach friendly hit, A Life of Illusion, one song into his set.

There was more where that came from, ranging from a cover of I Shall Be Released, which he dedicated to his late friend Levon Helm, to a soulful and rip roaringly good version of Turn to Stone. He makes music that is made for the shade a party friendly mixture of fist pumping rockers and gut busting novelty songs, some of which are tops in their respective genres.

He isn't all what he's made out to be, either. While he was funny ( spent a week up here one night, Walsh quipped, one of many subtle one liners tossed from the stage), he didn't rely on jokes for effect.

It wasn't necessary. Walsh's innate ability at coaxing magic from his stable of Fender and Gibson guitars is well told at this point see Rocky Mountain Way and Funk 49 and he hasn't lost a step over the years.

Ontario's Kim Mitchell opened the show with an hour long set of CanCon staples, from Rockland (a solid power ballad) to I Am a Wild Party (a beer soaked sing along).

He was a superb choice for an opening act, and though he had a few misses (Lager and Ale

didn't hit the high notes, but the effort was there), it was a treat to hear songs like All We Are, which was carried by his sweet singing bassist Peter Fredette.

The longtime sideman fake van cleef clover earrings also elevated Go for a Soda with his upper register, similar to the way Michael Anthony did for Van Halen back in the day.

It was a treat, albeit a subtle one.

Walsh got better as the night went along. During a version of Life in the Fast Lane, which he co wrote, Walsh sounded like a fierce player, a guitarist van cleef arpels earrings replica not to be messed with. He was great not just good with an instinctive van cleef & arpels necklace copy feel so rarely evident in modern day guitarists.

When he brought the night to a close with his signature song, Rocky Mountain Way talkbox and all it was a fitting cap to a solid, low key concert attended by 2,400 fans.

In fact, he makes magic with his guitar. The evidence is right there in the space between the notes and chords.
