While WoW's current player numbers are an improvement in World of Warcraft from the over 12 million active gamers it boasted back in 2008 when it was launching its Wrath of the Lich King expansion, there's been the expectation that a large number of players will come back for new expansions. Shadowlands is the last expansion has sold greater than 3.7 million copies in its first day when it was released in 2020. setting an all-time record on day one sales for the game.
Now, 2022 following the launch of the final patch for Shadowlands and what could be described as a year of reckoning by Blizzard, and the assumption that players will always return to the game may no longer be the case. With no BlizzCon (or BlizzConline) this year, fans of games such as World of Warcraft, Diablo and Diablo want to know when the next announcements on the future of each game will be announced. According to Blizzard director Mike Ybarra, updates on the future of those franchises will be coming "over the coming weeks."
Ybarra's update comes in the kind of a Twitter. The tweet is responding to a fan post on the news that Blizzard is hiring to develop an adventure game that takes place in a new universe. A fan tweeted that Blizzard might want to "throw some manpower" at Blizzard's current games, to which Ybarra offered this comment:
