Melbourne cant make the AFL finals this year but Saturdays clash with Geelong will be a significant one for them and Cats coach Chris Scott is expecting fireworks.Nike Air Max Classic Bw Outlet .The Simonds Stadium encounter will be Paul Roos 66th and final home-and-away game in charge at Melbourne before he hands over to coach-in-waiting Simon Goodwin. The Demons late-season push for a finals berth ended last week with a disappointing loss to Carlton. The third-placed Cats need a win on Saturday to guarantee a top-four spot.We assume they would want (Roos) to go out on a winning note ... on paper they dont have as much to play for as us but it doesnt always work out that way, Scott told reporters on Thursday. We expect that their effort and intensity will be really high, but its a really important game for us so we would expect that we would be pretty good in that area too.It certainly wont be a lacklustre affair heading into a final - it will be really good preparation for us.You would expect that they would be a little bit more free in the way that they play this week, which could translate to them being a bit more dangerous.Veteran forward Jimmy Bartel will return for Geelong after being rested for last weeks win over Brisbane.Tall defender Lachie Henderson is battling to play a part in the Cats finals campaign after undergoing minor arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday. Were more hopeful than confident (hell play again this year) ... obviously theres a little bit of water to flow under the bridge with his recovery, Scott said. The jurys out ... well just have to get a bit more information before we can give an accurate forecast.Air Max 97 . SAN DIEGO -- Always eager for a challenge, two-time Americas Cup champion skipper Jimmy Spithill and his crew of five on a high-performance, 46-foot catamaran hooked into a strong breeze off New York and headed toward Bermuda, hoping to ride above the waves on hydrofoils for all 662 nautical miles. Man United Shirt 17/18 .The weather turned nasty about halfway there, forcing them at one point to drop their sails and switch from performance mode to survival mode.Team Falcon made it to Bermuda in one piece, leaving Spithill excited about the future of offshore foiling while respecting Mother Nature. It got pretty bad, the Australian said in a phone interview from Japan, where hell lead Oracle Team USA in the final stop of the Americas Cup World Series this weekend. The first 24 hours were awesome. We put down some awesome miles and got to the Gulf Stream pretty quickly. Then it started to turn for the worse.Waves that had been 6 1/2 feet grew as big as 20 to 25 feet as the wind rose from 20 knots up to 40 to 45 knots.Anytime you have to go offshore, you have to be prepared for the worst, Spithill said. Its like mountain climbing. Anyone who goes up Everest or any other decent mountain, you have to be prepared for the weather to change and you have to have a plan. We were always prepared for the worst. In that situation you usually learn something about yourself and the team around you. It was impressive to see how everyone responded and got through it.The boat sailed at more than 30 knots a few times during the 66-hour trip, Spithill said.Down to bare poles at one point in strong wind, the cat was still going 20 knots down waves. We had a hard time slowing the boat up, Spithill said. Thats what youve got to be able to face when youre on the ocean, especially the Gulf Stream, which can be pretty notorious water. It was pretty crazy. It was some of the best sailing Ive done of my life offshore. It proves this is the next step in the offshore world, Spithill said. The trip was the idea of Shannon Falcone of Antigua, a former Oracle Team USA crewmember, and backed by Red Bull, which sponsors both OTUSA and the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup. The F4, built in the Netherlands, is the first foiling catamaran specifically built for the open ocean.Foiling has become the rage in sailing. While the concept has been around for years, it went mainstream during the 2013 Americas Cup on San Francisco Bay in a duel between 72-foot catamarans. Its continued to develop leading up to the 2017 Americas Cup, which will be contested in 50-foot foiling cats in Bermuda. When the Americas Cup catamarans reach a certain speed, they rise up on foils, lifting the hulls out of the water and allowing faster speeds. Its just pure performance, said Spithill, who steered Oracles giant trimaran to victory in the 2010 Americas Cup and then helped rally the American-backed team to victory over Emirates Team New Zealand in 2013. Once you can sort of get that drag gone and get that boat out of the water, its like a turbo boost. One challenge of offshore foiling will be at night. Spithill said foiling requires the crew to anticipate and look around, and the crew had to rely only on instruments during three moonless nights. While Spithill said he got a real test, physically and mentally, from the trip, the worst offshore conditions hed been in were in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart race, when six sailors died and five yachts sank during a fierce storm.Spithill also was at the wheel of Oracles 72-foot catamaran when it capsized in rough conditions on San Francisco Bay in October 2012.Joining Spithill and Falcone on Team Falcon were Oracle Team USAs Rome Kirby of Newport, Rhode Island; Tommy Loughborough of Singapore; Olympic sailor Cy Thompson of the Virgin Islands and Emily Nagel, a member of Team Bermuda in the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup.Matt Knighton, who won the Onboard Reporter Award for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, was the onboard cameraman, even using a drone to capture video footage during daylight hours. The voyage proved that foiling is the next step in offshore performance, Spithill said. But theres a limit. And Mother Nature made that decision for us.---Follow Bernie Wilson on Twitter at http://twitter.com/berniewilsonAnthony Martial Man United Jersey . NEW YORK -- When the New York Rangers selected Chris Kreider with the 19th pick in the 2009 draft, stardom was expected. Scarpe Adidas Superstar Nere e Oro.Entering his fourth NHL season, the left wing may be beginning to live up to the projections.Hes a power forward who is playing to his strengths, New York coach Alain Vigneault said after Kreider had a goal and an assist for the third straight game as the Rangers beat the San Jose Sharks 7-4 on Monday night.Hes tough to handle right now, whether on the initial rush or down low in the oppositions end. He makes it real challenging for the other team.Kreider, who signed a four-year, $18.5 million contract on July 22, has three goals and three assists in New Yorks first three games. According to the team, he is the first Ranger since Brian Leetch in 1992-93 to tally six points in New Yorks first three games. He also became the first New York forward to record six points in three games to start a season since Bernie Nicholls and Darren Turcotte in 1990-91.You want to play instinctually, Kreider said. You simplify your game; you get back to the stuff you know you do well. A lot of time that adversity helps you focus. From there, lock in on what you do well and do on a consistent basis.Kreider was one of seven Rangers to score, along with Marc Staal, Rick Nash, Kevin Hayes, rookie Jimmy Vesey, Mats Zuccarello and Michael Grabner. Twelve Rangers finished with at least one point, led by Zuccarello, who recorded a goal and two assists.New York has won two of its first three games this season.Im hoping were going to get better, Vigneault said. If youre going to get into the playoffs you have to be one of those teams that continues to improve. Some teams improve. Some teams dont improve and fade away. We need to be one of those teams that continues to improve.Tied 1-1 early in the second period, New York took the lead for good on Nashs first of the season 4:15 of the period. The sequence began when Rangers captain Ryan McDonaghs shot ricocheted off the end boards to Nash, who was in front of Martin Jones net.Jones finished with 22 saves. The lead grew to 3-1 6:06 later when Kreiders off-wing drive ticked off Jones stick and into the net.New York was 1 for 3 on the power play, and San Jose was 1 for 4.We are finding our way, Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said of his specialty units. I probably like our penalty kill better than our power play.Staals one-timer 12:06 into the game put the Rangers ahead 1-0.Following Staals goal, though, the Sharks outshot the Rangers 7-2 for the remainder of the period, culminated by Logan Coutures 5-on-3 power-play tap-in with 57.5 seconds left.San Jose, which lost for the first time in three games this season, cut the deficit to 3-2 on Brent Burns second of the season at 9:13 of the third. We had it early, then we didnt, said San Jose captain Joe Pavelski, who finished with a goal and three assists. We were chasing it a little bit too much.New York struck back quickly as Hayes and Vesey scored 21 seconds apart to push the lead to 5-2. The goals were the first of the season for both, and for Vesey, the first of his NHL career. The Rangers signed the Hobey Baker Award winner from Harvard to a two-year, free agent contract on Aug. 19.It was definitely just pure joy, Vesey said. I just couldnt be happier to get that one out of the way.Im really happy to get that one.The tack-on goals were significant as Burns scored his second of the game 1:20 after Vesey scored, followed by Pavelskis first of the season at 15:31.Despite watching his team score three third-period goals, DeBoer wasnt enthralled with the Sharks performance. We got what we deserved, DeBoer said. The team that competed the hardest won and thats the way it should be.Zuccarello and Grabner added empty net goals.New York goaltender Antti Raanta made 26 saves on 30 shots.Game notes New York played without D Dan Girardi and D Kevin Klein, along with rookie LW Pavel Buchnevich, due to injuries. SAINT-DENIS, France -- Portugal defender Pepe is fit and ready for another duel with Frances top forward Antoine Griezmann on the European Championship final on Sunday.I feel great. Im fully fit and can be chosen to play, Pepe said at a news conference on Saturday at the Stade de France. The tough Real Madrid defender sat out a 2-0 win in the semifinals against Wales because of a thigh muscle injury. The decision paid off for coach Fernando Santos not to risk his defensive leader against a Welsh attack that lacked the options France possesses.Griezmann is the clearest danger to Portugal, with his six-goal tally at Euro 2016 double that of any player, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who has three.Pepe and Ronaldo already got the better of Griezmann in a major final six weeks ago, when their Real Madrid team beat city rival Atletico in the Champions League final. Ronaldo scored the decisive penalty in a shootout after a 1-1 draw, and Griezmann missed a spot-kick when Atletico trailed 1-0 in the second half.Ive played against Griezmann several times in Spain, Pepe said through a translator. Hes not very tall, but hes very good at figuring out where the ball might be. Its important not to focus on one player, but France as a team.Though Pepe has two Champions League titles with Madrid, he acknowledged that Sundays game is the most important of his career.Yes, because Im representing my people, my country. We want to write our names in history, the 33-year-old deefender said. Adidas NMD XR1 Bianche. .Portugal seemed far away from the final when failing to win a group-stage game, and trailed three times against Hungary before salvaging a third straight draw.Santos then began selecting Southampton defenders Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares, leaving Pepe to lead a reshaped line that helped Portugal win tightly-contested knockout games against Croatia and Poland. This rugged, hard-to-beat style recalls Greeces surprise run to win Euro 2004 and beat the more attacking host Portuguese team in the final. Now Portugal is in a reversed role against a more flamboyant French side.I would like that, Pepe said when asked if history could repeat itself. That would be amazing but one thing has nothing to do with another. Twelve years have gone by and tomorrow is a totally different thing.Pepe has seemed on his best behavior at Euro 2016, cutting out the hard fouls that helped make his reputation and the play-acting simulation that angered many watchers of the recent Champions League final. The referee that May night in Milan, Mark Clattenburg of England, will have the whistle again on Sunday.I think this referee may be among the best two or three referees in the world, Pepe said. Parramatta are down but coach Brad Arthur isnt going to count his side out as a possible NRL finals chance. Jurgen Damm Jersey .Docked 12 competition points on Saturday for salary-cap breaches, the Eels find themselves near the bottom of the ladder.Their fall from grace comes less than 24 hours after remaining in the top four with a come-from-behind win over the Sydney Roosters. The NRLs decision means Parramatta will recalibrate their season from 12th position with 12 competition points. Its a situation that is tenuous at best, but making the finals is not impossible, even though Parramatta would have to win every game of the remaining eight rounds.Allowing for 28 points being the cut-off to make the final eight, Arthurs team rates as a mathematical chance of getting there with 16 competition points on offer until the end of the home-and-away season.Parramattas run towards an unlikely finals appearance will start against Penrith on Sunday week and, on what Arthur has seen amid the disasters of 2016, he will be the last one to think his players cant perform a rugby league miracle. To say that I cant believe theyre continuing to do it (is wrong), Arthur said after the 22-18 win over the Roosters.Theyre managed to do it week-in and week-out, and weve had quite a few distractions. So theyve just hardened themselves to playing well and playing for each other. The fact that they keep turning up for each other on the tryline - back-rowers and front-rowers defending in the centres - and they just kept turning up.The attitude is great - weve just got to keep working hard.Such has been Parramattas on-field resolve, even NRL boss Todd Greenberg said during Saturdays announcement he had nothing but admiration for Arthur and the Eels players. If Parramatta can make the eight from where they are now ... they thoroughly deserve to be there, he later told Triple M radio. TEMPE, Ariz. Mens Adidas Ultra Boost 3.0 MultiColor Running Shoes . -- These Arizona Cardinals are not morning people. The team heads east again this weekend, a direction that has not been kind to the Cardinals this season.Arizona enters Sundays game at Miami with an 0-3 record on the road against teams in the Eastern time zone. Its 0-4 if you throw in a game at Minnesota that also had an early start. The games have started at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. Arizona time, depending on whether they were played before daylight saving time ended. The state does not observe daylight saving time, preferring to end those torrid summer days as quickly as possible. The Cardinals lone road victory thus far was at San Francisco, a team with the worst record in the NFL at 1-11.The road losses include blowouts against Buffalo and Carolina and closer games against Minnesota and Atlanta.Poor starts, really poor starts, coach Bruce Arians said of the two one-sided defeats. A dropped pass in Buffalo, a busted assignment to a 50-yard run. A so-called fumble in Carolina thats a pick six. They picked it up and ran for a touchdown. It wasnt even a fumble. The officials said it was.Against Minnesota and Atlanta, Arians said, I thought we were in both games and played very well in spurts. ... Weve just got to make plays in the second half and handle the crowd noise when its chaotic. The Cardinals, coming off one of their best performances of a disappointing season in a home win over Washington, take a 5-6-1 record into Miami, with a kickoff at 11 a.m. Arizona time. Thats the same time the team practices during the week.Thats why we practice so early and meet so early, Arians said, just so were acclimated to Eastern time zones. The situation is puzzling, as is the entire Cardinals season, because most of the players were on a team that went 7-1 on the road last season.Quarterback Carson Palmer sees no common denominator in the road losses.Theyre just games we havent won, he said. ... You need to quiet the questions and you do that by winning this one.At least the slow start problem seems to be solved. The Cardinals scored on their first possession in the 38-19 loss at Atlanta and took the opening kickoff and used up more than eight minutes in a touchdown drive in Sundays 31-23 victory over the Redskins. Its something weve got to continue to do, Palmer said. Something weve put a ton of focus on the last four or five weeks and finally the last two weeks weve done it. You go on the road like this its huge if we can win the coin toss and get the ball and go down and score. Its a huge momentum gainer and weve got to do it this week.Game notes Running back David Johnson was named NFC offensive player of the week for his performance against Washington. ... Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald and Frostee Rucker -- old guys, Arians called them -- had the day off as has been the case on recent Wednesdays. ... TOKYO -- All options remain on the table -- including moving the rowing venue to a site hundreds of miles (kilometers) outside of Tokyo -- after a working group set up to review costs of the 2020 Olympics met for the first time, a top IOC official said Thursday. The group, made up of representatives from the International Olympic Committee, Tokyo organizers, the city government and Japans central government, is looking into various cost reductions, including moving three sports from planned new venues to existing ones. The four-party group was set up after a report from a city expert panel last month said the cost of the Olympics could exceed $30 billion -- four times the initial estimate -- unless drastic cuts are made. The panel proposed moving the rowing venue to Miyagi prefecture, 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Tokyo, and switching the volleyball site to Yokohama Arena instead of a new gymnasium in Tokyo.Christophe Dubi, the IOCs executive director of the Olympic Games, said the group discussed that option and it remains a possibility. The options remain, Dubi ssaid, referring to the potential relocation of the volleyball and rowing sites. The purpose was to study and ask further questions that will help fully clarify the situation for the benefit of all parties.Dubi said the four-party group will make its decisions at the end of November. While the organizing committee has balked at the citys cost-cutting ideas, put forth by Gov. Yuriko Koikes review panel, the IOC seems willing to listen. When you have one objective -- and it is to organize the best games possible and to leave the most possible legacy for the citizens of Tokyo, the vision of Tokyo -- any effort that goes in this direction is welcome, Dubi said. The proposal to move the rowing to an existing facility in Miyagi came after the projected cost for the original Sea Forest venue on Tokyo Bay soared to nearly 50 billion yen ($480 million), seven times the initial estimate.Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap Jerseys From China Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic Wholesale Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys China NFL Cheap Jerseys ' ' '

Hill participated in the teams morning shootaround, which is part of the process of passing his concussion test. But doctors had not yet cleared Hill to play. "He just did some work today. He looked fine, but he has to do more tests this afternoon," coach Frank Vogel said. "Theres a long list of things thats part of the NBAs protocol. Hes in the middle of that process. Hes not ruled out, not cleared to play. Hes a game-time decision." Vogel said he was preparing to play without Hill. Hill scored 26 points Tuesday night in Game 4 after a first-quarter collision with Knicks centre Tyson Chandler. Two days later, after the teams shootaround, Hill was still complaining of headaches. Team doctors then diagnosed him with a concussion, forcing him to sit out Game 5. His replacement, D.J. Augustin, played nearly 39 minutes and had no assists as the Pacers lost 85-75. The win allowed New York to climb back within 3-2 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals. Indiana gets a second chance to close out the series Saturday at home, where they are 5-0 in the post-season and have won all five games by double digits. Vogel has not said who will start Saturday if Hill does not play. "We prepare for guys to be out. D.J. Augustin, Ben Hansbrough. Lance (Stephenson) understands that he has to play some (point guard)," Vogel said. "Theyve prepared for that all year. . Mentally for those guys, knowing might help them a little bit." The Knicks arent sure what to expect, either. Coach Mike Woodson told reporters Friday that his team was preparing as if Hill would play. At Saturdays shootaround, Woodson explained he wasnt sure what to expect, thhough the Knicks couldnt let that affect them in Game 6. Cheap Nike Air Max Classic BW. "It doesnt matter who plays for them. Weve still got to do what we do. Its about what we do at this particular time," Woodson said. The NBAs protocol states that any player diagnosed with a concussion must be held out of all activities until he is symptom-free at rest and team doctors see no "appreciable" difference between the players baseline test conducted before the season and the test after the injury. Then the player must prove he is symptom-free as the level of exertion increases. Team doctors can determine whether the player passes, a decision that must be discussed with Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, the NBAs director of the concussion program. The league has not established a timetable for how long players must sit out before returning because each injury is different. Sometimes, the recovery time is quick. Kobe Bryant, for instance, did not miss a game after breaking his nose and being diagnosed with a concussion in February 2012. "I know back in the day I took some blows and you couldve easily called it concussions. But hell, you just played," Woodson said. "Thats the policy and I think its a good policy because, again, this is still a basketball game and youve got to deal with your health. Thats more important." Leaving one looming question: Will the decision about Hill make a difference in this series? "Finding out literally an hour or two hours before the game (Thursday) is a rough spot to put a guy in. For all of us, really," Pacers forward David West said. "We had to change some of the things we were accustomed to doing, take some of Georges stuff out of the package. But again, were prepared. Had a good day yesterday, a good day today. Our focus is where it needs to be." We stood on the deck of the white ocean liner as it slid out of the dock in Bombay. Herr Adidas NMD Chukka Suede Skor Marin/Vit . In silent fascination we stared at the Gateway of India, where an emperor had once landed to proclaim his possession of the brightest jewel in the crown, the glorious monument erected for his majestic entrance now a sad, receding landmark of our exit from the subcontinent. The ship eased past the fishermens boats and the ferry coming in from Elephanta Caves and headed out to what, in my boyish imagination, was Ali Babas magical ocean, the Arabian Sea. Also among the crowd on the deck where I stood with my parents were four famous cricketers and I threw unbelieving glances at them to confirm they were really there, an excited vibration bubbling through my blood at my luck not just to be watching them from beyond the boundary but to be sailing to England with them as my companions.Three of the cricketers were Indians: BB Nimbalkar, who had come close to beating Don Bradmans world record when he scored 443 not out in a Ranji Trophy match three years earlier; Gul Mohammad, known for once pulling a six that went chest high all the way into the stand at square leg; and Indias foremost allrounder, Vinoo Mankad. It was March 1952, and a month later the English cricket season was to begin with India that summers visiting team. These three had not been selected to play for India and were going to play for clubs in the Lancashire League, a lucrative refuge for international cricketers at a loose end. A similar professional arrangement in Australia attracted English players during the southern summer, and one such was the fourth cricketer on board, Jim Laker.Serenely, as if gliding on a mirror of the sea, the SS Stratheden slid out of Bom Bahia, the Good Bay, that was once a proud Portuguese possession before they presented it to the English as dowry in a royal alliance. The island of Bombay sank behind us, a haze fell over the Malabar coast, India receded. And then all is blue and sunny in the recollections of the next fortnight that flash in my mind. As for how it happened and what we talked about, over 60 years later I have no memory. But even before we stopped in Aden four days later, I was friends with the four cricketers, playing deck quoits with Laker and Mankad, and chatting with Nimbalkar and Gul in the bar. We were together in a group when the ship docked in Aden and Marseille, and we went ashore. Gul never seemed to leave the bar, and the sharp image of him - of his round face and short, straight black hair with its side parting, head bent with his eyes fixed on the glass of beer - has not lost a single pixel all these years later; a sad image, which alternates in my mind with those from a match I watched him play at the Brabourne Stadium.Paying their own fare, the four cricketers were travelling second class, and I heard that the entire West Indies team, which had completed the 1951-52 tour of Australia, was on board the SS Stratheden in first class. I had seen them play at the Brabourne Stadium when they toured India in 1948-49, the towering Clyde Walcott, maroon cap on his head, grinning after a back-footed shot straight past the bowler, and Everton Weekes square-cutting with ferocious power on his march to a fifth consecutive Test century. Unbelievably, here they all were, even Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine, those little pals of mine, and its still impossible to mention their names without hearing that song and doing a happy little jig. To see them, all I needed was to slip into the ships forbidden first-class territory, not too difficult a project for the chameleon capabilities of a 17-year-old boy.And there they were, some eight or nine of them lying in deckchairs scattered on the immaculately painted deck. I stared in awe at each and, with palpitating heart, wondered if I dare approach them for autographs, but did not, largely because I did not want to be noticed by the ships staff. I stayed long enough to satisfy my curious eyes and withdrew. The picture has remained like a vivid dream for over 60 years, though only as a general composition of bodies on a deck without a particular identification, as if arranged there by way of a modern art installation, lying limply resigned to the seemingly unending months-long voyage.T he 1952 English season began soon after we arrived in early April. Being among the earliest immigrants after the dissolution of the Empire, our racial identity made us conspicuous among the native English. When I enrolled in a grammar school in London at the start of the summer term, as the only brown-skinned boy in a sea of pink bodies, it was neither unnatural nor surprising that I should be the object of mockery and insults. But not for long. Come the games afternoon for the senior boys, the cricket master saw me with the bat, and within weeks I was opening the innings for the 1st XI, and before the term ended Id won the respect of the whole school. In the meanwhile the Indian team arrived for their tour and I went to see a traditional friendly opener, on a dull, blustery day at the end of April, against an Indian club in Osterley. It was more of a social event where some of the English press got to know the tourists. Mankad had originally been left out by the selectors and had gone to play in the Lancashire League. Soon after the tour began, however, there was a resolution to whatever the problem had been, and Mankad was back. The warm, friendly person whom Id called Vinoo bhai when playing deck quoits was the soul of India when they played England at Lords. The Test was also memorable for Godfrey Evans scoring 98 in one pre-lunch session, and for the young Peter May and Tom Graveney showing promise of greatness to come, but Mankad dominated. England commenced their second innings and when the captain, Vijay Hazare, called on Mankad to open the bowling, I remember him squatting near the bowling crease and rubbing the new ball in the grass to take the shine off.Fred Trueman, the rising English star, overwhelmed the tourists that summer, his speed intimidating two of their principal batsmen, Pankaj Roy and Polly Umrigar, into pathetic submission. By the end of the season Trueman had established himself as the English spearhead, soon to be partnered by the elegant Brian Statham. Over the coming seasons, it would be a thrill to see this muscular and stocky figure, his black hair bouncing, come tearing down one end like a bull. At the other was the slim, tall Statham, quiet, taking off like a predator in the forest, his feet doing a smooth shuffle and gathering pace before a little leap with the ball held high above his head, the right arm straight and the left elbow aimed at the batsman, and then the final stride and full swing of the arm for delivery. On wickets that did not favour speed, the ball was handed to Laker, who licked his fingers at the start of his short run and kept a poker face as he imparted deceptive flight, and to his inseparable fellow spinner, the balding Tony Lock. After the Old Trafford Test against Australia in which Laker took 19 wickets, a television crew filmed him driving back to London, his face not betraying the slightest emotion, as if nothing had happened. He had fulfilled his duty, done his best for England and that was all; in those days there was none of the celebratory jumping for joy and hugging of team-mates each time a wicket fell. After finishing school, where I was the cricket captain for two seasons and played as opening batsman and wicketkeeper, I spent the second half of the 1950s at a university where I read and wrote poetry. Aged 24 in 1959, I graduated with a mediocre degree. But Id begun to publish poems and essays, and in that England of 1960, when coloured immigrants were discriminated against for all but menial service jobs, I had the curious distinction of being turned down for every job I applied for but being accepted as a poet. One Sunday, the Observer advertised a position for an assistant sports editor; although I was unqualified, I sent in an application composed in a literary style that caught the eye of Christopher Brasher, the sports editor. He had set the pace for Roger Bannisters record-breaking sub-four-minute mile and then won a gold medal as a steeplechaser at the 1956 Olympics. On reading my letter, Brasher called me for an interview and received me in his office with a warm, friendly welcome; he said that the assistant editors job was out of the question, but was there anything else I could do. I could think of nothing, but said, Your chief cricket correspondent [Alan Ross] is a poet, I am a poet, therefore, I can be a cricket correspondent. Brasher smiled, and said hed try me out. And soon came a Saturday when I was sent to Oxford for my first county cricket assignment.A year later, led by Ted Dexter, the MCC boarded a Pakistan International Airlines flight to Karachi for its 1961-62 tour of Pakistan and India, and I went with them as the Observers correspondent, sitting next to the England batsman Bob Barber in the window seat of a Boeing 707. It was not a memorable tour and was, in fact, entirely forgettable. Englands most successful batsman, Ken Barrington, of the flawless technique and zero style, accumulated runs as though they had to be stolen like a squirrel gathering nuts, and was tiresome to watch.Dexter, who was expected to thrill with his dazzling style, had the occasional brilliant moment but was largely disappointing. None of the bowlers made a mark, and the general performance of the two home teams in Test after Test required protracted patience from the spectators. These were the kind of boring and irrelevant Tests that created the climate for the popularity of one-day internationals. It was the end of a dull, waning period, the end of an era before the one that would colourfully speed up the game and impart a forced excitement.Back in London after the tour, I found that my reports in the Observer had made me a familiar name, and I received invitations to play in celebrity matches starring some famous retired cricketers who wrote weekly columns for the Sunday papers. I had the pleasure of keeping wicket to Learie Constantine, then in his 60s, who, some years before I was born, had been the earliest of the West Indians to have impressed the colonising power that one of its subjects was an equal match. A gleam in his eyes, he tossed the ball up and had the batsman and me mesmerised as we watched it float through the air, wondering which way it would turn. At the other end, I stood up to an even more cunning spinner, Richie Benaud. It felt strange fixing my eyes on him from behind the stumps. A decade or so earlier I had seen Benaud establish himself as a leading allrounder in a Test at Lords - his demeanour boyishly eager then - and here he was, no longer boyish but mature and relaxed and yet sharply athletic, confounding me with his disguised spin.In the same match another Australian, Jack Fingleton, was the principal batsman in our side. He was at the crease when a wicket fell and I was next man in. Naturally, as a young amateur, I was eager to impress my celebrated peers, and so carefully defended a couple of balls to get my eye in. That didnt please Fingleton, who, in his turn, was eager to demonstrate to the crowd that he was still the great batsman he had been in his youth. To his irritation, a chance single saw me facing the next over, leaving him again at the bowlers end. As the Cambridge mathematician GH Hardy once said, cricket is a game you play against 11 players of the opposing team and ten of your own. But Id qualify that by saying that cricket is also a game in which you sincerely applaud a brilliant stroke or a fine delivery regardless of who executes it. And so, with Fingleton beginning to fume that he was not getting the strike, I stepped forward and executed a perfect off drive. Fingleton came running down and we were about to cross when, turning his head, he saw the ball cross the boundary. Though naturally frustrated not to get the strike, he said, Good shot and walked back to the non-strikers end. Another great cricketer was in London that season, Frank Worrell, writing a weekly column for the Observer. That made him a colleague of the other reporters, whereupon one of them, Clement Freud, had the idea of arranging a match so that we could say - as I am doing now - that wed played with Frank Worrell. We played against a club in Brighton on a pitch that had seen much action earlier that summer, leaving it with more grainy dust than grass. Winning the toss, we batted first, with me opening the innings and Worrell at No. 3. I took guard and faced the first ball. It pitched just short of a length, a very ordinary delivery, its only virtue that it was on a straight line. I leaned forward, presenting the full face of a defensive bat. The ball did not bounce and skidded along the grainy dust, slipped past my bat, and hit the off stump.I pulled my bat back, stood up and began the dismal walk to the pavilion. Halfway there, I passed Worrell, gently shaking his head in commiseration as our eyes met. Bad luck, he said and walked on. He went on to score a hundred.Adidas NMD R2 Sverige . SAN FRANCISCO -- Ryan Vogelsong will make his first start against the San Francisco Giants in 12 years Monday when the Pittsburgh Pirates open a three-game series against the National League West leaders.Vogelsong, 39, played seven seasons for the Giants, including 2012 and 2014, when he started seven games and went 3-0 in the postseason as the club was winning a pair of World Series championships. The 12-year veteran was allowed to leave as a free agent last winter, signing with the Pirates while the Giants were adding free agents Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija. The Giants have since acquired a third new starter, Matt Moore, in a trade with Tampa Bay. The left-hander will oppose Vogelsong in the series opener.Vogelsong last faced the Giants as a starter on Aug. 12, 2004, when he was the losing pitcher for the Pirates in a 7-0 home loss. He allowed three runs on six hits in five innings that day.He started a game for the Pirates at AT&T Park in San Francisco earlier that season, limiting the Giants to two runs on eight hits over six innings in a 4-2 win.He did not get a decision in that game, and has gone 0-1 with a 5.74 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against the Giants.Vogelsong went 48-49 with a 3.93 ERA over two stints with the Giants that covered all or parts of seven seasons. He started 132 games for San Francisco.Hes never a foe; hes someone were competing against, Giants right fielder Hunter Pence said of his former teammate. Ill always be a fan of Ryan Vogelsong. Hes allowed just one earned run in 12 innings against Atlanta and San Diego, although the Pirates lost both games, 5-2 to the Braves and 4-0 to the Padres. Its no secret that I feel more comfortable (starting), said Vogelsong, who has been used both as a starter and a reliever by the Giants and Pirates in his career. For some reason, when I start, I feel like my stuff is better. The Pirates flew to San Francisco on Sunday night on the heels of taking two of three from the Giants NL West rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.Like Vogelsong, the Giants Moore has been the victim of a scarcity of run support. He has yet to record a win for San Francisco in two starts since the trade despite allowing a total of just four runs on six hits in 12 innings at Philadelphia and Miami. The Giants have split those games, beating the Phillies 3-2 and losing to the Marlins 2-0. Moore received a no-decision and a loss in those games. The 27-year-old will be making his AT&T park debut Monday, and will be facing the Pirates for the first time in his six-year career. The Giants are coming off a stunning, 8-7 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, a game San Francisco led 7-1 in the seventh inning.
