LOS ANGELES -- After weeks of negotiations and intrigue, Doc Rivers has officially left the Boston Celtics for the Los Angeles Clippers. Matt Miazga Chelsea Jersey . Rivers will be introduced as the Clippers new coach and senior vice-president of basketball operations at a news conference Wednesday at their Playa Vista training complex, capping a lengthy process by completing a rare trade involving a championship-winning coach. The Clippers and Celtics finalized the move Tuesday when the NBA approved the deal. Boston will get an unprotected first-round pick in 2015 from the Clippers for Rivers, who went 416-305 and won the 2008 NBA title during nine seasons with the Celtics. Bostons front office mostly had warm words for Rivers after he took off for his exciting new team on the West Coast, apparently not eager to stick around for the aging Celtics rebuilding process. "We dont have a championship without Doc Rivers coaching," said Danny Ainge, the Celtics president of basketball operations. "He did an unbelievable job. He has a long history of great success with us in the last nine years, and we wish him the best in Los Angeles." Rivers is likely to be the NBAs highest-paid coach with the deal, and hell also have a prominent role in the Clippers front office with his additional title. Clippers owner Donald Sterling will expect impressive results for such an investment, but his long-suffering franchise has never been in better shape on the court -- providing Los Angeles re-signs Chris Paul, who is eligible for a five-year contract worth nearly $108 million in July. Paul is widely expected to stick with the Clippers, and Rivers arrival might cinch the deal. With Boston likely to spend the next few years revamping, Rivers seized the chance to take over one of the leagues most compelling young teams. He was eagerly pursued by the Clippers, who are coming off the best regular season in franchise history with a roster built around Blake Griffin and Paul. "He felt like it was time for a change," Ainge said. "He felt like we all needed a change. That was his rationalization or justification for going to the Clippers, that this was better for everybody. I dont think there should be any resentment. I know how Boston fans are. This may be a win-win for everybody." The 51-year-old Rivers replaces Vinny Del Negro, who wasnt re-signed after the Clippers won a franchise-record 56 games and their first Pacific Division title last season. Los Angeles first-round playoff loss to Memphis likely cost Del Negro, who went 128-102 over three years and became the only Clippers coach to post consecutive winning seasons in 35 years. Rivers new deal is expected to be similar to the three years and $21 million that remained on his contract with the Celtics. Boston was knocked out of the first round of the playoffs by New York last month, and Rivers gradually became more interested in the Clippers vacancy than the Celtics rebuilding process. The negotiations for Rivers proceeded deliberately and abruptly over the past two weeks, with several potential moves discussed by the franchises. Ainge would have welcomed Rivers back to the Boston bench, but Rivers apparently saw the Clippers as a golden opportunity. "Sometimes youve got to let your good people go to pursue what they need to pursue to make themselves happy," Celtics President Rich Gotham said. "While its tough to see Doc go, I think we feel good about what he did here. We will be lucky to find as good a coach as Doc was." Los Angeles also spoke to Boston about acquiring star forward Kevin Garnett in another element of the trade involving Rivers, but NBA Commissioner David Stern wont allow teams to trade active players for a coach. Garnett and Southern California native Paul Pierce wont be reuniting with Rivers in Los Angeles any time soon: Ainge said the NBA has forbidden player trades between the two teams for the rest of the year, and both aging stars are under contract for next season. Garnett has discussed the possibility of retirement with two years and over $23.5 million left on his deal, while Pierce is due to make $15.3 million next season. Rivers played one season for the Clippers in 1991-92 during his 13-year NBA career, and they made the playoffs that season for the first time since the former Buffalo Braves moved to the West Coast in 1978. Los Angeles has made only five playoff appearances and won just two rounds since that season. But the Clippers are coming off the best two-season stretch in club history, and Rivers arrival further alters the franchises decades-long reputation. Rivers will be an intriguing match with the high-flying Clippers and their Lob City acrobatics, but his coaching pedigree and leadership skills will provide him with immediate credibility in his new locker room. Rivers Boston teams played at a more deliberate pace than last seasons Clippers often used last season, but the veteran coach is likely to adapt his offensive plans to fit the Clippers talent. Rivers impact on Los Angeles could be felt most on defence, where the Clippers often struggled last season despite their lofty record. But it makes sense to capitalize on the popularity of some of the stellar horses who compete in other Breeders Cup races by putting those races in prime spots adjacent to the Classic, when the most eyeballs are watching.The lineup got me thinking when the order for this weekends event at Santa Anita was announced last week. The Breeders Cup Turf, which has always been the second-richest Breeders Cup event behind the Classic [and this year, it received a purse boost to $4 million] is positioned three races before the Classic. For the Breeders Cups first 27 years, it owned the events prime supporting spot right before the Classic.But for five of the last six years -- counting this one -- the Turf hasnt exactly been treated as the second-richest and, by association at least, the second most important Breeders Cup race.In 2011, the Turf was first moved out of its traditional position as the lead-in for the Classic and was instead run three races before the Classic. No one could argue with this particular move. Goldikova was going for her fourth consecutive victory in the Breeders Cup Mile, so the Mile was promoted to the spot immediately preceding the Classic. (Goldikovas amazing pursuit fell short and resulted in a third-place finish.)In 2012, the Turf again was run three races before the Classic, and the Mile again got the prime lead-in spot to the Classic. But her situation isnt anything like the circumstances that surrounded Goldikova or Wise Dan the second time. And frankly, I think quality is higher at the top in this years Turf than it is in the Mile. Even the Filly & Mare Sprint will be run closer to the Classic this Saturday than the Turf.Okay, if you cant or dont want to run two grass races such as the Turf and Mile back to back, then at least put a traditional Breeders Cup race such as the Juvenile between them. Running the F&M Sprint so late in the Saturday Breeders Cup card is just ? weird.Purse boost this year aside, it almost seems as if the Turf has fallen out of favor with Breeders Cup management. But even if appearances dont reflect reality, with the Mile having been run in the top supporting slot right before the Classic five of the last six years, perhaps its best to close the $2 million purse gap between the Turf and Mile, if for no other reason than to make the Miles purse almost as valuable as its placement in the race order says.A few pre-final entry Breeders Cup thoughts** I think too much emphasis is placed on post positions, but I do think post positions might be very important to the Classics pace. Despite being the bad guys in this rivalry, Orton and Wyatt got a heros welcome, while Slater and Rhyno came in to relative silence.As WWE announcer Mauro Ranallo pointed out, Rhyno began the match for the tag team champions for the first time since they began tagging with each other, and once Slater was tagged in ring it was clear why that was --- he appeared overmatched in almost every way against Wyatt and Orton. Slater took a beating for a good chunk of the match, but Rhyno seemed to do what he had done best for their entire reign as he cleaned house upon re-entering.The most interesting wrinkle of all happened in the closing moments of the match, when Luke Harper emulated Ortons sacrifice from Survivor Series and ate a gore from Rhyno to save Orton outside of the ring. Orton then grabbed the blind tag, hit an RKO on Rhyno and sealed the victory to tremendous applause.There might be dissension among the ranks of The Wyatts down the line, but for now -- as was clear as both Wyatt and Orton draped their new titles over Harpers shoulders -- it appears they are as well-aligned as theyve been since Orton joined.No disqualification match: Nikki Bella def. Carmella by pinfall (7:39)This match took far too long to happen during their feud, but once Bella and Carmella got down to it, this no-DQ match was as advertised -- a violent sendoff to a long-brewing conflict.Carmella wore the wounds of the beating she suffered Tuesday on SmackDown after running down Bella on the microphone, and in the early stages she got her measure of revenge by channeling her inner Sasha Banks with some vicious kendo stick shots.Bella took control by kicking Carmella in the back and then throwing her into the video board on the ring apron. She then climbed onto the ring barricade and hit a well-executed spinning kick to Carmellas chin, but the finale came when Bella used a fire extinguisher to great effect and then hit the Rack Attack 2.0 to get the pinfall victory.Both of these women are now clear to move on and put this rivalry behind them, as evidenced by Carmella pointing to Natalya as Bellas secret attacker at Survivor Series. While this match wasnt a technical classic, it accomplished what it set out to do by getting Bella a sorely needed victory.Ladder match for WWE Intercontinental championship: The Miz (c) def. Dolph Ziggler (25:10)It would be incredibly difficult to match the intensity and natural energy of their previous matches, but in this final showdown, The Miz and Ziggler closed the last chapter of their feud with an appropriately vicious sendoff.This match started in a similar manner to their last couple of contests, with each guy swinging for the fences early and missing due to the familiarity of their opponents offense.The pace was slow and methodical for that reason, and even as ladders were put into play, most of the biggest swings early on missed their targets. Counter-offense proved to define this match, as Ziggler ate a face-full of ladder on multiple occasions before ultimately using a ladder to pull the The Miz into the ringpost using his momentum. It was clear that these guys were going to get enough time to tell a fitting conclusion to this lengthy story.A spinning DDT from Ziggler on The Miz was the first sign of a definitive advantage for either man, but even as he walked past Maryse on the outside he took far too long to take advantage. The Miz responded by dropkicking the ladder into Zigglers face and then shoving it into a prone Ziggler in the corner multiple times. Yet again, though, neither man had a chance to settle down for long, with Ziggler neutralizing The Miz and springboarding off a ladder bridge to hit a Shawn Michaels-esque flying elbow drop.The Miz took over this match completely by working over Zigglers knee for a solid five-minute stretch, including a figure-four leglock with Zigglers leg looped through a ladder. Even as Ziggler tried to superkick The Miz, his injury didnt allow him tto do it and he ate a Skull-Crushing Finale face-first onto the ladder. The Miz took advantage against Ziggler, who climbed both ladders at the same time, and hit him with two low-blow kicks to send Ziggler falling for the final time.One rivalry is undeniably over, and Zigglers future is uncertain, but the ongoing conflict between The Miz and SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan took center-stage in a promo just before the match and immediately afterward.I want to dedicate this win to the SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan, The Miz said immediately after the match. Without your motivation, always hating me, and denying me, and giving Dolph Ziggler chance after chance after chance, it motivated me to be the greatest Intercontinental champion ever.While its hard to figure out exactly how this conflict will continue with Bryans physical condition, The Miz has clearly not seen the end of the wrath of his GM.Chairs match: Baron Corbin def. Kalisto by pinfall (12:51)Much was said about how the element of chairs in this match placed things on more of a level footing in terms of the storyline between the 6-foot-8 Corbin and the 5-foot-6 Kalisto. But very few pointed out how ugly and one-sided it could also get with the chairs in play.The early minutes of this match leaned far more heavily toward the latter, but a drop toe-hold into a chair wedged into the corner by Kalisto and a leap onto Corbin that put his back through six chairs set up in the middle of the ring changed that tune in a hurry. Corbin regain the momentum with a perfect little-guy versus big-guy spot; as Kalisto dove through the middle rope with a tope suicida, Corbin caught him in mid-air and spun him around several times before landing a Deep Six onto the floor.Say what you want about this match, but both men did a great job conveying just how much they were supposed to hate each other. Corbin missed chair shots as Kalisto did everything to stay one step ahead of the crash, and Kalisto sacrificed his body with an incredible moonsault into double-knees onto a prone Corbin with a chair laying on his chest.Kalisto connected with a great number of chair shots of his own, and set up a pile of chairs for a Salida Del Sol, but a chair smash to the face of a flying Kalisto and an End of Days from Corbin onto said pile of chairs brought the match to a swift end. Both superstars put their all into this match, and while the crowd was still coming down from the ladder match, there was a fair bit to like about this conflict between two under-utilized talents.Tables match for WWE SmackDown womens championship: Alexa Bliss def. Becky Lynch (c) (15:16)Just as the chairs match element seemingly leveled the playing field in the previous match, making this a tables match created one of the hardest outcomes of the night to predict. Sure, Lynch was already pushed from the top rope through a table in the build-up, but having a certain element of luck in play always gives the underdog an advantage they wouldnt otherwise enjoy.Both women really laid the punches and kicks in on their opponents, and both Lynch and Bliss really lived on the edge early in this match as they each teetered on the ring apron and teased falling through the table below. The pace of this match was somewhat off throughout, unfortunately, and while there were moments of excitement and some cool spots, both Lynch and Bliss took a little too long setting up tables on several occasions.Bliss had the lengthier advantage after doing her signature continuous stomps to the back of the head, forcing Bliss face into the mat. At some point the teases of running into or through the table, though well done, started to become a little bit much; there was one particular moment, however, when Bliss DDTd Lynch onto the metal edge of an upside down table, where the challenger looked positioned to take control and brought a somewhat quiet crowd back into the match.The pace of this title match certainly picked up in the latter stages and, after an eye rake, Bliss powerbombed Lynch from the apron through the table that lingered on the outside of the ring the entire match.
