Coach [Geno] Auriemma and his staff are amazing people. Spending time with them and the team, seeing the chemistry that is there indicated to me that this was it.Coach Auriemma gave me goals before each game I played and then would check back with me to see if I met those goals. No other coach did that. He told me he could make me a better player. He is a special coach.Special coach meets special player. With superior size and off-the-charts agility, Collier has the ability to consistently finish plays in the block or stretch the defender to the arc. Collier, who was ranked the No. 1 prospect in the nation as a sophomore, seems to be on a mission to regain that spot, dominating opponents early this season. Last year as a sophomore, Collier started in all 35 games and averaged 24.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She won a bronze medal during the summer with Team USA at the FIBA U17 world championships in Zaragoza, Spain, averaging 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.Collier, who had reopened her recruitment after committing to Texas in eighth grade, intends to major in broadcast journalism in Storrs. This is the first commitment in the class of 2018 for the Huskies, who are on a 79-game winning streak and play Tennessee-Chattanooga on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Connecticut celebrated the No. 2 2017 class in the country after getting signatures from No. 1 Megan Walker, No. 14 Mikayla Coombs, No. 29 Lexi Gordon and No. 37 Andra Espinoza-Hunter.In addition to her immense talent, Collier will take a promise to Storrs, one she made to herself after the death of her dad, Elliott Don Collier, who passed away in April after a battle with cancer.I feel I owe it to him to be successful and be legendary in this life, Collier said this spring. Sir Bradley Wiggins hinted at extending his career after finishing second in the London Six Day with Mark Cavendish on Sunday. Nick Boyle Jersey .Wiggins and Cavendish, Madison world champions at the Lee Valley VeloPark in March, finished as runners-up to Kenny de Ketele and Moreno de Pauw of Belgium in the exhibition event, which began on Tuesday.Wiggins quipped money talks when he was asked if he could be persuaded to return in 2017.He added: Ive enjoyed it that much, I just dont know at the moment. Id love to still be part of it in the future. I still love riding my bike, I love racing.Who wouldnt want to come back, with a week like this and the crowds like this? Its been incredible. For now at least, the 36-year-olds career finale comes in Ghent, the city of his birth, in the Six Day event which runs from November 15 until November 20.Wiggins and Cavendish are two of the key protagonists in British cyclings boom years and came close to a crowd-pleasing victory, only to be beaten by the defending champions.Wiggins was racing for the first time after a period he described himself as topsy turvy.Data stolen by hackers from files held by the World Anti-Doping Agency showed Wiggins received three therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) for anti-inflammatory drug triamcinolone -- a substance which has a history of abuse in cycling and is otherwise banned -- on the eve of the 2011 and 2012 Tours de France and 2013 Giro dItalia.Wiggins, who in 2012 became the first British winner of the Tour, and Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford strenuously deny wrongdoing, insisting the injections were medically necessary to deal with a pollen allergy that aggravates Wiggins long-standing asthma condition. The TUEs had the approval of the UCI, cyclings world governing body, and there is no suggestion any rules were broken. There is also an ongoing UK Anti-Doping investigation into allegations of wrongdoing in cycling, something which followed reports a package was delivered to Team Sky at the June 2011 Criterium du Dauphine, then Wiggins most significant road victory. He raced for Team Sky until April 2015.Team Sky deny wrongdoing, and, like British Cycling, are cooperating with the investigation, which Wiggins has welcomed.Wiggins began the evening jesting about his retirement -- Im getting on a bit, he said -- and the scrutiny which he has faced of late.He added: I might get a job in Tesco, stacking shelves. Just getting back to a bit of normality. It is doubtful he would be keen to sort the newspapers. Wiggins again declined to speak to the media, only addressing the crowd from the central stage where he was awarded numerous prizes as one half of a crowd-pleasing partnership with Cavendish. It was clear he was enjoying himself, revelling in the theatre of an event which sees the velodrome turned into a nightclub. The pair won Sundays first event, the Derny race, where they take it in turns to shelter behind a pilot on a motorised bike and go faster than they otherwise could. With four laps to go, Wiggins did his best jockey impersonation, pretending to whip Derny pilot Michel Vaarten. It whipped the crowd up and Wiggins moved into first place to win.Wiggins was given the Rouleur Magazine Top Banana award for the rider who best encapsulates the spirit of the event. It was greeted enthusiastically by the capacity crowd. The prize was a five-litre bottle of red wine. The Madison chase concluded the event and Cavendish and Wiggins led entering it. The Belgian pair continually attacked and Cavendish and Wiggins missed a vital changeover as they fell narrowly short of victory.Michael Pierce Jersey .Y. -- Sabres defenceman Tyler Myers had no intention of changing his hard-hitting style before taking part in a disciplinary hearing for his illegal check to New Jersey forward Dainius Zubrus head. SPARTA, Ky. Lawrence Guy Jersey . -- Being good all night long at Kentucky Speedway helped Kyle Busch get the luck he needed for another impressive finish.Busch led 185 laps and caught a huge break before surviving a final restart to win Fridays 300-mile NASCAR Xfinity Series race for his first victory on the 1.5-mile tri-oval since 2004.It feels good to score that victory, said Busch, who entered with five top-5s and 200 laps led here. Been a long time since I got a win.The defending Sprint Cup Series champion needed overtime to get the win in his No. 18 Toyota, with the race going one circuit past its scheduled 200 laps after a late caution. Busch then outdueled Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Daniel Suarez and Austin Dillon in a three-wide restart and went on to win by .455 seconds.Busch benefited from a late mistake by Erik Jones. He passed Busch for the lead after a Lap 174 restart just before the fourth yellow, but he inadvertently shut off his car and fell to third as a penalty for failing to keep up with the pace car.Dillon was second in a Chevy, with Suarez third in a Toyota and Jones fourth in a Toyota.I wasnt trying to save fuel, I was doing something else and trying to get the best restart I could and unfortunately I hit the wrong button, Jones said. One night after his Camping World Truck Series team became that series winningest outfit, the Xfinity career wins leader earned his fifth victory and ninth top-10 this season. For a while the question was whether anybody would get close to Busch. After claiming the pole with a speed of 187.318 mph, Busch set his own groove and pace on the resurfaced, reconfigured track and had all the grip he needed after a full day of Cup practice. He led six times after starting on the pole.Only on that one restart did Busch show vulnerability as Jones made a gutsy pass on the outside. Jones never got the chance to put room between him and Busch as Ray Black Jr.?quickly spun out to draw the yellow flag.Jones No. 20 car then appeared to stall during the caution, creating the penalty and a turn of events that handed the lead to Busch for good.I didnt think the outside would carry the speed as much as the inside, and Erik Jones proved me wrong, Busch said. I certainly learned from that, and when he had his problems not being able to get the car re-fired, it just kind of handed the race back to us, and from there I chose to restart the race on the outside from there on out. Thats what won us the race. Danny Amendola Jersey . It was the kind of score that might make everyone else wonder which course he was playing. Except that Graeme McDowell saw the whole thing. Time, as a wiser man than I once said, is the author of authors. No matter how fast we run in the hope of outpacing it, it always catches up with us. This is because it is attached to our heels with elastic. And it always has the last word, just as it does the first.Cricket also has an elastic view of time, packing its excitement into barely a quarter of the actual minutes available. In Test match cricket, each ball bowled is in motion for between six and 12 seconds, with the important bit, from hand to bat, taking up barely an entire second. A typical hours play, containing, say, 13 overs, thus involves barely 15 minutes of action, of which around two minutes are ball to bat to field. They also serve, as Milton would say.And yet, within this game of contradictions built on dichotomy, this game that challenges us on every level, forcing us into unnatural positions, demanding fluidity when for the greater part of every match the entire field is almost entirely still, within this game the great players appear to manufacture their own time. Time is the umpire of umpires, if you like. Its no wonder that when we are struggling with our personal game we explain it in temporal terms: we cant time the ball; the rhythm in our run-up has gone. It even works for keepers: a mistimed take bounces out of rather than buries itself into the glove.I was once at a milonga, an organised event where you dance the tango, where tradition has it that the women choose their partner for each dance. I noticed one gentleman, maybe in his late fifties, who was in high demand. He danced a simple dance, little more than the basic walk of tango, but he was obviously preferred over the younger and flashier leaders, all leg flicks and twirls. I asked one of his partners why he was so popular (even though I thought I had it nailed), and the response was that he just felt better. Id been watching his feet, however. The reason he felt better was because he knew where the beat was. This meant that his dancing partners could predict when his feet were aiming at, which made for a dance in which coordination was total, where two dancers merged into one. The others were merely there or thereabouts. But cricket revolves around the ball, and specifically getting the ball to bend to our will rather than somebody elses. And to do that we need as much information about it as possible. In fact, we need to predict where its going to be at any given time in its trajectory. Only in this way can it be propelled to just the right length, hit with just the right amount of force into just the right gap, clasped at just the right moment. This is exactly wwhat happens when playing music, only the ball is the groove. Shaq Mason Jersey. When you play music (by which I mean contemporary popular music; classical music, with a conductor, is a different kettle of fish), the living and breathing heart of the music is the drummer, for they define the groove, they create the contingent time in which the music exists. For the ensemble to work, each instrument must find its place within that time, as asserted on the drum kit. The bass, for example, will find its home in the kick drum, not played at the same time, but inside the drumbeat. The bass must make the kick drum play a note. In similar fashion, the guitar must make the hi-hat or snare play a chord. For a drummer to play at their best, they must be balanced, relaxed and confident in every stroke. They must feel themselves inside the beat and avoid second-guessing their instincts. The best drummers produce a groove so big, so fat, that each beat acts as though it has its own gravity, with the default placement of a note being in the exact centre of each beat.It is this knowledge of the beats precise centre that allows the ensemble player freedom to make a rhythm that is irresistible, a rhythm so simple, so beyond mere precision that it enters the realms of inevitability. From this place, the note can be placed a little in front of the beat, a little behind, on top, underneath... the player controls the note, and thus the music. And so it is in cricket. When a bowlers run-up goes, the suggested fix is invariably technical, but what is needed is for them to tap into how it felt when all was dandy. They must feel like the drummer - relaxed, balanced, confident. They must feel that the ball is part of them, on a string, as is said of Jimmy Anderson when hes in the groove. The game is not the time to practise but just to kick back and play. For the batsman, the process is the same. As you wait for the bowler to deliver the ball, so you tap into the feel of the game, allow your body to connect with it, and as the ball traces its arc towards you, your instinct knows where the centre of the ball is. Then control is yours. Play it early, play it late, play it spot on. Close the face, open the face, show the makers name. Whichever you choose, the ball will obey.Cricket is all about timing, and timing is not technique, its feel. Perhaps, just perhaps, if we learn to feel differently, to trust our instincts to place the ball, bat or gloves just so, it might just help us to slot back into the groove. WICB chief executive officer Michael Muirhead has said there was no one specific reason for the termination of coach Phil Simmons contract, nor was it a sudden development. Calvin De Haan Jersey . In a nutshell, Muirhead said, Simmons vision did not align with the strategic approach of the WICB and the divide widened over the past few months, reaching a point where a final decision had to be made. The decision to relieve Simmons of the job was taken by the board of directors at the quarterly WICB meeting last weekend in Dominica. It is understood the directors were asked to vote on the matter, but Muirhead would not reveal whether it was a unanimous decision to terminate Simmons contract. It was the boards decision. Let us leave it at that, Muirhead told ESPNcricinfo.Asked whether it was his appraisal that eventually led to the decision, Muirhead did not reveal much. I hired him, so therefore I have to release him but that is on the recommendation of the board, he said. He did point out though that the WICB and Simmons had been deliberating on quite a few contentious issues behind the scenes. The coach has an opinion and the board collectively had another opinion, and that had happened on more than one occasion. It is a whole number of things over a period of time. I cant say it was really one thing. There is no one thing that defines what may have taken place. I think things came to a climax when a decision needed to be made.Simmons track record as West Indies coach was mixed. Appointed after last years World Cup, the high points of his tenure were West Indies draw at home against England last summer, and the World T20 win in India in April. Importantly, the players seemed to be on the same wavelength as Simmons. But Muirhead and the board of directors remained unconvinced. Ultimately it is performance of the team, and we want the team to perform the best it can do, Muirhead said. Was it [doing so] is a question that is still unanswered.Technically, Muirhead was not Simmons boss. That was Richard Pybus, the WICB director of cricket. Simmons had mentioned in an interview that he and Pybus were not on the same page. Relationship is a difficult word, he had said of Pybus, soon after the World T20 triumph. He communicates via emails but he has not spoken to me since the suspension. Its sad because this is not about him or me, this is about West Indies cricket. At last weekends meetings, the board discussed several reports including the Cricket Report submitted by Pybus and the CEOs report prepared by Muirhead. Pybus report was an overall review of cricket across the Caribbean, not limited to the West Indies teams and coaching staff.Reiterating the lack of alignment in strategies, Muirhead said: It has been an ongoing thing where I think Phil, in all that he has said and done, he has not aligned… the relationships were breaking down. I think he himself had ideas for a different strategic approach, notwithstanding one already having been approved and adopted by the board. I dont think he was aligned with that.In a media release sent out on Tuesday, the WICB had pointed out it had identified differences in culture as one reason behind the friction between both parties. Muirhead elaborated: The other thing was the work culture was a little different. It was how we do business, how we execute things. It was an organisational culture. It was not the difference in ethnic culture as has been pointed out elsewhere.Muirhead said he had had conversations with Simmons, and he had to intervene on quite few occasions to resolve issues. The last time they had met was about two months ago, he said. When he called Simmons on Tuesday to reveal the boards decision, he said the chat was cordial and not hostile in any way.Muirhead pointed out it was a matter of coincidence that the Simmons termination was announced the day the West Indies limited-overs squad left for the UAE to play Pakistan. The sanctions and other things could not be discussed without the board meeting. We have board meetings every three months, where we discuss everything including the performance of the teams and the coaching staff. Cheap Adidas NHL Jerseys . Despite a furious comeback attempt, the Winnipeg Goldeyes still dont have an answer for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Austin Howard Jersey . Saturday night in Fargo, the RedHawks beat the Goldeyes for the fifth straight time this season in front of 2,966 at Newman Outdoor Field. Buddy Sosnoskie hit a three-run bomb in a four-run fourth inning as the RedHawks beat the Goldeyes 6-3. With the win, Fargo improved to 12-11 on the season and pulled to within a half a game of second-place Winnipeg in the American Associations North Division. With the loss, the Goldeyes second straight, Winnipeg falls to 12-10. "We got off to a tough start, but I thought the guys did what they could to make a game of it late," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea told Paul Edmonds on the TSN 1290 post-game show. "We just have to get back out there tomorrow and make sure they dont get a sweep." Once again, the Goldeyes got behind the eight ball against Fargo and just couldnt dig themselves out of a deep hole. The RedHawks scored a run in the second and then lit up the board for four in the fourth, as Sosnoskie put an exclamation point on the inning with his first home run of the season. Despite the home run, the No. 9 hitter in the RedHawks order is still scuffling, hitting just .225. With Fargo leading 5-0 heading into the eighth, the Goldeyes finally got their bats going. Fehlandt Lentini led off with his fourth home run of the year to make it 5-1, then Ryan Scoma walked, Josh Mazzola singled and Casey Haerther was safe on an error to load the bases. Luis Alen popped out to first and then Leonard Davis singled to drive home Scoma and Mazzola and make the score 5-3. Then Amos Ramon singled to load the bases with one out, but Nate Samson popped out to second and Tim Smith struck out to end the threat. Thats as close as the Fish would come. Fargo added a run in the bottom of the eighth and the Goldeyes are now 4-10 after an 8-0 start to the season. Starter Justin Garcia (3-1, 4.07 ERA) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits over seven complete innings. Patrick Keating came on and gave up the run in the eighth, his first earned run allowed this year. Paul Burnside (1-3, 6.25 ERA) went 5.2 innings and allowed no runs on six hits to get his first win. Chase Johnson picked up his league-leading seventh save. The Goldeyes and RedHawks will go at it again on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. on TSN 1290 radio in Winnipeg. Although Pete Gehle is the scheduled starter, Vermilyea told Edmonds on the post-game show that the he and manager Rick Forney were leaning toward using Alex Capaul on short rest. Gehle was hit by a ball during batting practice and might not be ready to start. Vemilyea said that he and Forney would decide on Sunday morning. TORONTO -- After falling just short in last months $1-million Queens Plate, jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva and Up With the Birds left nothing to chance Sunday in the $500,000 Breeders Stakes. Da Rosa moved Up With the Birds into the lead down the stretch, then emphatically held off a spirited River Seven to win the final leg of Canadian thoroughbred racings Triple Crown at Woodbine Racetrack. The Queens Plate runner-up easily handled the 1 1/2-mile distance, winning in 2:28.69 on a firm turf. "I think he knew he lost last time (in Queens Plate) so he said, This time Eurico, I do the job, " Da Silva said. "When he took the lead, it was hard for another horse to catch him because he wants to take off. Hes all heart, hes a very good horse." Up With the Birds fell well back in the 1 1/4-mile Queens Plate on July 7 but rallied strong to finish second, a half-length behind Midnight Aria in rainy conditions on a speed-favouring Woodbine polytrack. The race took its toll on Midnight Aria, who skipped the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on July 30 at Fort Erie Racetrack due to fatigue while Up With the Birds was always being pointed towards the Breeders Stakes. Up With the Birds didnt have to contend with either Midnight Aria or Prince of Wales victor Uncaptured as neither ran Sunday. Winning trainer Malcolm Pierce said the rest certainly helped Up With the Birds easily pass his stiffest test. In fact, after taking the lead the three-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic showed why he was the overwhelming favourite, holding off a game River Seven before pulling away for a 2 3/4-length victory. "He answered (questions about distance) them today," Pierce said. "I was real worried at the head of the stretch because River Seven was giving him all he wanted but the last eighth of a mile I got a little more relief as he pulled away. "We didnt think there would be much pace so we were sure hoping to maybe be a little closer than we were in the Plate and just have some luck and a good trip. Thats half the battle because we thought we had the right horse." Owner Sam-Son Farm earned the $300,000 winners share with a record sixth Breeders victory. River Seven was second in the 10-horse field, a neck ahead of third-place finisher Pyrite Mountain. The remainder of the field, in order of finish, was: Global Express; Whos Mr. Hughes; Highland Bay; Dragon Puff; Scipio; Bookies Nightmare; and Faithful Rose. Wando is the last Canadian Triple Crown winner, achieving the feat in 2003. Pierce said had Up With the Birds won the Plate, he wwouldve run at Fort Erie and taken a run at the Triple Crown. Cheap Baltimore Ravens Jerseys. . But with a first- and second-place finish, Pierce wasnt lamenting about what mightve been. "Weve never really tried him on dirt," Pierce said. "He worked on dirt in New Orleans over the winter but we didnt think it really needed to happen. "If we wouldve won the Queens Plate we probably wouldve gone to Fort Erie and tried it but after getting beat (in Plate) it sure made a lot of sense to come into this race really fresh." Up With the Birds paid $3.10, $2.30 and $2.10 while River Seven returned $5.20 and $3.40. Pyrite Mountain paid $3.10. River Seven was the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races this year, taking second in the Prince of Wales after finishing 10th in the Plate. But trainer Nick Gonzalez, who also conditioned Midnight Aria, was pleased with River Sevens first effort on grass. "I knew it was going to be a fight," he said. "A lot of the horses in the race were proven accomplished turf horses. "We were experimenting but Im very happy." Gary Boulanger, Pyrite Mountains jockey, said Up With the Birds was a deserving winner but added with a little bit of luck his horse couldve taken second. "I was following Eurico (Up With the Birds), I was stuck there the whole way," he said. "If I had a little better trip down the lane, I dont think Id beat Eurico but Id have finished second." Up With the Birds also continued a trend in this race, becoming the 26th of 55 race favourites in the Triple Crown era to emerge victorious. The three-year-old colt has also finished in the money in all eight career starts (five wins, two seconds, one third) and boosted his lifetime earnings past $870,000. Up With the Birds has also been impressive on turf, winning twice and earning a second-place finish in three career starts. "I dont know, I think hes equally adept at both poly and turf to be honest," Pierce said when asked which surface Up With the Birds favours most. "He has never run on dirt. "I was very proud of his race in the Plate although I was disappointed he got beat. Hes just a good horse and Im happy hes in my barn." Pierce was brutally honest when asked whats next for Up With the Birds. "Not a clue, I was just hoping to get through today," he said. "There will be no rush and no real plans. Gordon moved to a town near Indianapolis when he was 14.For us to share that moment together, I mean thats probably our last lap around here in a professional race, and Ill cherish that moment, Stewart said. Its something that doesnt happen very often. It was pretty cool. ... Were never going to get that chance to do that again. In January, Gordon invited Stewart to go dune buggy riding with him?in California. Stewart broke his back on a hard landing, which forced him to miss the first eight races of the year.Tony and I have gone through a lot over the years, but he and I have become really good friends, Gordon said. I was with him when he got hurt this year. ... I learned a lot about Tony Stewart. Hes driven. Hes tough. To see him in that pain I saw him in and come back and win Sonoma [last month] and be out here driving like this with a chance at a championship when this whole thing is over, thats impressive. As far as the race, the 44-year-old Gordon had some typical Gordon moments on the track. He was never great on the double-file restarts. He had some moments when he nearly got caught up into accidents. He passed about four cars on the final couple laps.I enjoyed moments, Gordon said. I enjoyed that last [ceremonial] pace lap with Tony Stewart. ... Ill be honest. Those restarts -- thats not fun.Theres nothing fun about that, unless you are making great passes and go forward. When you are getting your butt kicked on restarts, its not fun. That was the least fun for me, but its also something I need to work on for next week at Pocono.Gordon joked that he was too old to be doing this much longer. He is committed to Pocono next week but nothing beyond then. A timetable for Earnhardts return has not been set.Being out of the car this long made me realize how tough this truly is, how not only fit are these drivers but how talented they are, Gordon said. They just took advantage of me on those restarts. They knew they could -- they probably knew that a little bit when I was full-time. ... Wisconsins victory lap from Lambeau Field to Madison was memorable if not for the miles traveled the distance covered between national expectations and those from inside the Badgers program.Saturday (3:30 ET) against Mid-American foe Akron, the 10th-ranked Badgers dont want to misplay the respect card.Wisconsin entered the season with questions regarding its quarterback, the ability to handle such a rugged schedule and concerns of a potential drop-off for the program after years of sustained success. The Badgers only had eight seniors on their two-deep roster for the opener against LSU.All those concerns, at least for a few weeks, were put aside following a shocking 16-14 win over No. 5 LSU in the season opener in Green Bay.I feel like we were out to gain respect, and I think we did it at the end of the day, Wisconsin linebacker T.J. Watt said.Akron beat VMI, 47-24, in its opener, with six touchdown passes from quarterback Tommy Woodson and 576 yards total offense. But a Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall will be a new challenge altogether, even if Akron coach Terry Bowden is 1-0 head-to-head against Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst (Akron beat Pitt in 2014). Wisconsin is 2-0 all-time against Akron and won 38-17 in 2008 with 404 rushing yards.Bowden is 20-30 as Akron head coach, and hes not shy about the way the Zips want to win. Theyre throw, throw early, often and go deep when they do. In the first quarter Saturday, Akron had many miscues, but the Zips also had five pass plays of 20-plus yards. Its going to stress us out differently (than LSU), Chryst said. Theyre going to spread us out and weve got to play good assignment football. The MAC has a 10-year streak of scoring at least one upset over the Big Ten, and Western Michigan wiped out Northwestern last week. The history lesson is not lost on the Badgers. Some people might have a harder time, staying in the past and celebrating that victory a little too much, but I think were a real focused group, Watt said. Weve already started watching film, breaking down Akron, so its just on to the next one.The Badgers (1-0) defied the odds by defeating an SEC powerhouse that returned 17 starters and many experts viewed as a potential playoff contender. Wisconsins defense forced three turnovers, running back Corey Clement had a big game and kicker Rafael Gaglianone made three field goals, including the winner with just under four minutes left. Clement rushed for 86 yards on a career-high 21 carries.Im excited about what the future holds for this defense and this Wisconsin badgers football team, senior linebacker Vince Biegel said.Akron had 13 penalties last week, including a defensive personal foul on a goal-to-go situation, missed two extra points and led 26-24 entering the fourth quarter. Bowden knows Saturday could be a reality check if the Zips dont pack discipline, and defense.Defensively ... you can see were still a work in progress, Bowden said. The immediate future for Wisconsin includes a drop-off in strength of opponents. After hosting Akron on Saturday and Georgia State the following week, the Badgers begin a stretch of games against ranked conference opponents -- at Michigan State and Michigan, home against Ohio State and at Iowa. These next two weeks are very important, Clement said. Im not saying these arent big games, but you talk about Michigan and Michigan State and all these other great opponents that are in the Big Ten, you want to go into those games with as much momentum as possible.Wisconsin inside linebacker Chris Orr is out for the season because of a season-ending knee injury suffered against LSU. More than two decades ago, the leaders at Texas and Oklahoma foresaw the college landscape shifting. Cheap Melvin Ingram Jersey . Looking to build a more viable and stable league with greater television capability, Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds and his Oklahoma counterpart Donnie Duncan convened to map out what would ultimately become the Big 12.As the Red River rivals prepare to meet for the 111th time this weekend in Dallas, the conference the two forged together is on the brink. The Big 12 is the smallest Power 5 league, the only one without a conference network and, as its own board chair termed it, psychologically disadvantaged.Going into a critical Oct. 17 meeting of league presidents and chancellors, the overriding question that could determine the fate of the conference figures to be this: Can Oklahoma and Texas still save the Big 12?And do they even want to?Absolutely they can save the Big 12, without question, said one conference insider. But theyve also had plenty of opportunities to lay the cards down that way.And have yet to indicate that. The Big 12s exploration of expansion this year has jump-started the discussion of a grant of rights extension way ahead of schedule, as the rights dont expire for another nine years. When ESPN agreed to give the ACC a conference network this summer, the ACC reciprocated by agreeing to extend its rights for another decade through 2036. Could the Big 12 follow a similar path?Even though the conference has yet to even vote on expansion -- which may or may not happen Oct. 17, depending on whom you ask -- neither Oklahoma nor Texas has intimated it has any intention of signing a rights extension in concert with an expansion move -- with a Big 12 official terming it an apparent non-starter.That has left the other eight schools in the Big 12 feeling a bit insecure about their future affiliation, with another conference source stating the obvious: The Big 12 cant survive without Texas and Oklahoma. One league official likened the budding situation to a pair of star players nearing their free agency. Instead of inking extensions with their current team, they seem intent on testing the free agency waters. And when the rights near their expiration, the Sooners and Longhorns could be, as yet another official put it, floating around like bees.In spite of the uncertainty, a pair of industry insiders that dont work in the Big 12 see a more bullish future for the conference.I really see it as them protecting themselves until the dust settles a little more, said one insider. I dont think its because theyre entirely dissatisfied being in the Big 12.This season has done nothing to quell the internal anxiety about the Big 12s viability, as the conference was collectively clocked on the field during its out-of-conference slate, rapidly reducing its playoff aspirations to an improbability. But as the same insider pointed out, the dust could settle before the rights deal expires in a manner that could make the Big 12 seem more tenable for Oklahoma and Texas than it might right now. The playoff, for example, could expand to eight spots, which in theory would give the Big 12 a cleaner path to the postseason. And the proliferation of online streaming, as another example, could provide the Big 12 with several bankable opportunities to park its tier 3 rights. The Big 12 is highly dysfunctional in many areas. But their brand is still strong. Theyre still making money. The Big 12 is really doing better than the perception out there, the insider said. And when you think about it, Oklahoma and Texas fit best in the Big 12 for a lot of reasons.Indeed, the Big 12 still fits the Longhorns and Sooners in a number of ways, even as the angst among both fan bases continues to balloon.Notwithstanding West Virginia, the footprint of the league is sensible for both schools, especially considering some of the alternatives.Though conference realignment has gutted several of its top rivalries, the Big 12 still boasts the Red River Showdown, which remains one of the sports most iconic games. The Big 12 is the only league with a tier 3 framework in which Texas can continue its lucrative Longhorn Network, which pays the school an average of $15 million a year. And in the Big 12, as the national brands and founding members, Texas and Oklahoma wield influence in the boardroom in a manner they wouldnt be able to in any other Power 5 conference. In fact, if it resulted in a rights extension, one Big 12 official suggested that the league would be perfectly fine with giving Texas the authority to pick one expansion school, and Oklahoma, the other.Of course, the Big 12 has enormous challenges ahead in order to remain a viable league, as commissioner Bob Bowlsby has repeatedly acknowledged. The Big 12 is the only Power 5 league without a conference network, which is a great source of the consternation Oklahoma president David Boren has expressed about the league. While the Big 12s distribution of $30.4 million per school is currently competitive with the other Power 5 leagues, Bowlsby has pointed out that the conference is primed to lose ground to the Big Ten and SEC, which both boast bigger markets, larger stadiums and remunerative conference networks.Even then, the second insider countered that the Big 12 still has plenty to offer.I dont think theres any reason why -- if the current members remain committed to it -- the Big 12 couldnt be a substantial and competitive entity going forward, the insider said. The truth is, the angst around it now has been self-created, through the effort to look at this expansion issue and the public comments made about it. Personally, I dont see why it couldnt continue to be a viable entity into the future. Its included in the autonomy group. It has strong access to the playoff bowl games. Its basketball has been succeeding at a very high level. Maybe theyre a little bit short on the inventory compared to bigger conferences, but what they have is content still desirable to entities out there that, in the future, will want to broadcast college sports. What matters, though, is, to what conclusion will Texas and Oklahoma come? While the allure of, say, the Big Ten or SEC or Pac-12 could be enticing, there is evidence to suggest that the Sooners and Longhorns could continue to thrive in the Big 12 in various ways.Though much has been made of the SEC recruiting some of the top talent out of Texas, the Red River schools have proven they can still recruit at a high level.Under Charlie Strong, the Longhorns have reeled in back-to-back top-10 recruiting classes, despite consecutive losing seasons on the field.Oklahoma, meanwhile, currently owns the nations fifth-best recruiting class, which includes a trio of ESPN 300 prospects out of the Lone Star State.Though the Red River Showdown this weekend figures to carry little fanfare after both have struggled to 2-2 starts, Oklahoma and Texas have shown they can still deliver big TV ratings from the Big 12, as well.Texas overtime win against Notre Dame earned a massive 7.0 overnight rating, making it ESPN/ABCs second-highest watched opening weekend game on record. Even though it kicked off at 11 a.m. Central Time, Oklahoma-Houston was the third-most watched game on opening weekend Saturday.I know the value that conference can bring, the ratings that conference can bring, said the first insider, who added that when Texas finally returns to prominence, the Big 12 will be viewed in a different way than it is now.Texas will be back at some point. And when that happens, nobody is going to be talking about the Big 12 being inadequate. The conference is having a bad year, but they have two national brands that can bring it all back. I see this as a blip, not a trend.Theres more there than people realize. Will Oklahoma and Texas agree? The future of the league they built together some two decades ago hinges on it. HOMESTEAD, Fla. Quinton Spain Jersey . -- I dont know about you, but Im ready to see a racing championship resolved the old-fashioned way.Im tired of the artificial elements that have been introduced to the sport in an effort to create or maintain excitement instead of letting things take their natural course.Nothing happens organically anymore. So much effort is put into creating the ultimate finish -- whether its for a race or a championship -- that things are rarely allowed to evolve naturally.Take the overtime rule. Without it, last weeks NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix would have ended under yellow, and Matt Kenseth would have been the winner. Its a system that worked well for decades.Same with season-long championships. How do you think William Byron feels right now? The talented 18-year-old rookie won seven Camping World Truck Series races this year, yet it was Johnny Sauter hoisting the championship trophy Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway.Make no mistake, Sauter put together a quality season with three wins, 12 top-5 and 19 top-10 finishes in 23 starts. But Byrons numbers are arguably better. There are those seven wins, plus he nearly matched Sauter with 11 top-5s. Byron led 727 laps over the course of the year compared to Sauters 130.The title was decided in Sauters favor because this is the first year NASCAR thrust a Chase format into the Truck Series championship. Sauter earned two of his three wins late in the season when only six drivers were eligible for the championship. ?Byron was eliminated from contention when his Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota blew an engine while he was leading with a handful of laps to go at Phoenix a week ago in the race that cut the Truck Chase field from six to four.I just feel so bad for William and the way this point situation worked out this year and not having an opportunity to come out here and race for the title, said team owner Busch, who successfully negotiated the Cup Series Chase eliminations to make the Final Four for the second year in a row.The bitter part is this kid is the champion, and hes not going to get the big trophy, added Rudy Fugle, crew chief of Byrons No. 9 KBM Toyota.???It could happen again today in the Xfinity Series. Erik Jones claimed nine poles, won four races, scored 15 top-5s and has led 624 laps to date this year. Yet thanks to an elimination-style Chase, also in its first year in Xfinity competition, Justin Allgaier (no wins, and just 28 laps led) could emerge as the champion.Of course thats ignoring the fact that despite notching up nine poles and leading 2,052 laps on the way to 10 wins (in just 17 starts), Busch is flat-out ineligible for the Xfinity championship.Ironically, NASCAR created the original Chase in 2004 for this very reason. Ryan Newman won eight Cup Series races in 2003, claimed 11 poles and led 1,173 laps, yet finished a distant sixth in the championship standings to Matt Kenseth, who never started from pole once, had six fewer top-5s and led just 354 laps. That statistical imbalance, and the perception that Kenseth was somehow a less worthy champion than Newman, was what pushed NASCAR into action. Since then, the Chase has grown -- to 10, 12, 13, and finally 16 drivers, with the additional artificiality of a series of eliminations intended to mimic the format successfully used in stick-and-ball sports. To NASCARs credit, there has not been an unworthy champion during the Chase era. The Chase created the classic 2011 championship battle between Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart, which Stewart would not have been in if the traditional season-long format had been used. But its going to happen in the Cup Series one of these days. Newman nearly pulled it off in 2014 in the first year for the elimination Chase -- and wouldnt that have been the ultimate demonstration of poetic justice? What it all comes down to is a philosophy of managed competition, and NASCAR has long been the industry leader in that regard. You hear a lot of talk in America today about too much government, and that certainly applies in NASCARs case.?From making small adjustments to cars to ensure that no manufacturer gains the slightest advantage, to instituting increasingly gimmicky ways to guarantee the season championship goes down to the wire, NASCAR has always had a heavy hand when it comes to artificially spicing up the show. Its not worth going back to add up the points the old way to figure out who would have been any Chase years moral champion -- though it can be fun -- because the advent of the various forms of the Chase fundamentally changed the way people raced throughout the season. It changed the entire dynamic of racing for a championship. And thats what is so frustrating. These days, once a team locks itself into the Chase, the rest of the regular season becomes pretty much irrelevant. The focus shifts to preparing for the final 10 races of the year rather than putting in 100 percent effort trying to be competitive and build a points cushion throughout the summer. One or two bad races used to be a bump in the road for a championship contender. But now, if it happens at the wrong time, it can ruin a whole years worth of work.I look back at 2007, my final year at Hendrick [Motorsports], and we were running pretty good, Busch recalled.?I think we were third in the Chase at the time, and we were either leading or running third at Kansas, and I think Junior [Dale Earnhardt Jr.] came off of 2 and wrecked me. From there on, that killed the rest of our mojo, our momentum, the things that we had going for us in that season. Then in 2008, right the exact year after that, we got into the Chase as the top seed, Busch continued. We won eight races, and then boom, right out of the gate in the Chase we tried to start doing things a different way. It messed us up, and we totally lost what we were doing and what our focus was. That killed us there.Im not saying that going back to a season-long championship slog is automatically going to make racing great again. But it would at least do a better job of recognizing greatness over the course of a calendar year rather than through a smaller sampling of a few weeks. This years Cup Series Final Four is representative of the best the 2016 season had to offer because there was a fair amount of parity throughout the field and no driver won more than four races. But that wont always be the case, and even this year, some drivers could argue that the system has been unfair to them -- among them, four-time winners Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr.Busch and Joey Logano would still be in the top four in the standings using the classic point standings, but Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson would rank seventh and ninth respectively. Points leader Kevin Harvick would theoretically clinch the championship Sunday with a top 20 finish under the old system, but hes not title-eligible.Time moves on, and sports gradually evolve, but you can be certain that NASCAR will never backtrack and revert to a classic, season-long championship format -- even though the advent of the Chase is the number one reason fans cite when asked about their declining interest in stock car racing. The Chase is here to stay, and if the drivers dont necessarily like it, they still generally respect the results it produces.Weve worked really hard to get here, said Logano.?I dont think its ever easy, and everyone is here for a reason.?These are the four best teams this year. Its been proven that theyve either been consistent, or can win when they have to.?If they had some troubles earlier in one of the rounds, everyone was able to get through. Theres not many guys who are able to do it, and obviously it was so close.?Theres a lot of pressure thats been put on these race teams, and these are the race teams that were able to handle it, he added.?A lot of people can go a different way when theres pressure put on them, but these teams here seem to be the ones that are best this year, and one of them will prevail at the end. I understand its very difficult to win. I also understand when you have these types of situations, youve got to dig yourself out of the hole and you got to have one focus and thats the next game, the next moment. You have to make sure the players are not being bombarded. I know theyre being bombarded outside of this football building, but that the football building becomes a sanctuary for them.If the Spartans slip again and lose Saturday at home against Northwestern, it will mark their first four-game skid since the fourth and final year of the John L. Right now theres traffic. It seems like Im beginning to have to work around guys. He ran four times for 76 yards against the Eagles and had a 72-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.Carroll said theres a chance that Prosise comes back this year, but the team wont know for sure until test results come back in the next 24 hours or so. Rawls will replace him as the Seahawks starting running back, and rookie Alex Collins is expected to get in the mix. Rawls, in his first action since suffering a fibula injury in Week 2, carried 14 times for 57 yards. Collins was inactive.Running back Troymaine Pope will be sidelined after suffering a high ankle sprain.
