Architect Rem Koolhaas invited the national pavilions in the Giardini of the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale to respond to the brief Absorbing Modernity: 1914 2014. 1914 NOW leaps from this brief and comprises a response from four fashion curators with distinctive approaches towards their discipline. A focus on the year 1914 unites the films, which reveal multiple perspectives on one period in fashion and fashion curation. Rather than working in familiar museum contexts, they have explored the potential of film as a medium through which to understand fashion changing values and interpretations. The four curators: Judith Clarke, Amy de la Haye, Walter Van Beirendonck and Kaat Debo have each worked collaboratively with four practitioners who work with the moving image: James Norton, Bart Hess, Marie Schuller and Katerina Athanasopoulou.

The creative territory between fashion, architecture and performance is explored in two new exhibitions at RMIT Design Hub. Fashion Performance highlights a community of contemporary practitioners who sit between the disciplines of experimental fashion, clothing and performance. The exhibition includes time based media, garments, installations and a series of live performances. In a climate interdisciplinary and collaborative thinking, Fashion and Performance addresses an evolving and hybrid area of practice that unpicks the multiple messages in worn and performed clothing and fashion.
SMUDGE is a new collaboration between Phillip Adams BalletLab and Brook Andrew, in partnership with RMIT Design Hub.

The Inside Story on How to Keep Prized Turkish Van Cats as Pets
In Eastern Turkey lies the mystical Lake Van, which is one of the world's largest endorheic lake. The Turkish Van is a breed of cat that hails from this rugged mountainous region. The first one to be registered was imported from Turkey to England in 1955 by Laura Lushington. Its coat is perfectly suited to the climate in the regions surrounding Lake Van. This area faces extreme temperatures during the summer and winter seasons. The Turkish Van's wonderfully adapted coat is semi long haired, water resistant, and thick in winters, all the while maintaining a soft, cashmere like texture. These cats receive their winter mane upon reaching maturity. During the hot spring and summer months, the long hair on their body is conveniently shed and replaced by a velvety short coat. However, some cats may have random body spots of hues similar to those on the head and tail. Pure Vans do not have more than 20% of color on the entire body and no marking on the legs. The color of the first one to be exported out of Turkey was Red Tabby and White, which is still considered to be its authentic coloring. Vehicle with 13 immigrants plows into a car and hits students
TEMECULA, Calif. A Chevrolet Suburban fleeing Border Patrol agents crashed at high speed into a passing car outside a high school Tuesday, killing four students and a father driving his son to school and injuring the 13 occupants of the camper. as horrified students arrived for classes at Temecula Valley High School. Wreckage and bodies were strewn across a busy intersection in this fast growing, semirural community in southern Riverside County, renewing controversy over Border Patrol policy on high speed chases.
"There was metal and glass and rubber and people . . . all went up in the sky," said Jason Boles, a driver who witnessed the crash. "There was notebook paper all over the place so I knew there were kids involved. And I could see the dad in the front seat of the Acura with his suit on, and he was dead."
The careening truck also struck and killed two students walking on the sidewalk: a brother and sister whose mother, a reporter, learned of their deaths as she was covering the accident for her newspaper.
"The kids were on the sidewalk just where they were supposed to be and they got killed," said Riverside County Sheriff's Investigator Henry Sawicki.
Four of the suspected illegal immigrants suffered serious injuries when the truck overturned. The driver a suspected smuggler from Mexico and eight other passengers were treated for minor injuries, then turned over to police for questioning. The driver is a juvenile and his name was not released.
The accident revived arguments about Border Patrol chases in cities near Southern California freeway immigration checkpoints.
After Tuesday's tragedy, some angry Temecula residents and officials questioned why immigration agents pursued suspects into a residential area near a school.
The high speed chase began after the Suburban left northbound Interstate 15, drove on surface roads around a Border Patrol freeway checkpoint near here, and returned to the freeway. A Border Patrol vehicle began to chase the Suburban, which left the freeway again and sped into the town.
Officials said the agents slowed down before the accident at the intersection of Rancho Vista and Margarita roads. The Border Patrol vehicle, which was pursuing the truck eastbound on Rancho Vista Road, "slowed its pursuit when its emergency siren and red lights failed," said Gus de la Vina, chief of the San Diego Border Patrol sector. "The vehicle continued to follow the van at a quarter mile distance."
A preliminary investigation indicates that the pursuing agents acted properly, said De la Vina, who blamed the accident on the suspected smuggler driving the Suburban.
Sheriff's detectives have not determined whether the Border Patrol was engaged in a pursuit when the crash occurred or what charges will be filed, Sawicki said.
One witness said the Border Patrol vehicle appeared to slow down. "The Border Patrol car stopped at the top (of the street) like he wanted them to know he stopped chasing them," student Mike Madieros said.
The plainclothes agents followed the truck to the Temecula checkpoint, he said. They asked Border Patrol agents to intercept the truck, but it sped away when agents tried to pull it over at the Rancho California Road freeway exit several miles west of the high school.
"They were following to see its destination," Beasley said. He had no further information about the delay in attempting to stop the truck.
The dead were identified as Temecula banker John Davis, 46, driver of the Acura; his 17 year old son Todd Davis; a friend, fake hermes bag 14 year old student Monisa Emilio, and the brother and sister on the sidewalk, Gloria Murillo, 17, and Jose Murillo, 16.
Sobbing students were led into the school as police and emergency personnel swarmed around the wreckage. One of the many parents who rushed to the school was the Murillos' mother, who writes for a local Spanish language shopping publication, El Remate.
Publisher Elia Esparza, Gloria Murillo's cousin, said Murillo was replica birkin handbags nervous when she headed for the scene, although she knew nothing of her children's deaths.
"She said it was a good thing that she was going to go down and report the story because it would replica hermes handbags outlet give her an excuse to go into the high school and get her kids out," she said.
Esparza criticized the Border Patrol's chase techniques.
"The Hermes birkin bags fake Border Patrol is at fault," she said. "They could stand outside our office in Temecula and catch all the illegals they want to. Why do they have to chase them?"

Results From 70.289 total contacts 4.857 contacts was with children less than 5years. In this group 98 children suffered from choking. In 78% BLS had resolved the obstructing foreign body before arrival of EMS services. Seventeen children had successful treatment with BLS by ambulance personal. Five children required advanced airway management and one child required cardiopulmonary resuscitation. No deaths were registered. None of the children with near fatal choking had any comorbidity prior to incident.
Conclusion Choking in children is an uncommon emergency with replica vintage alhambra necklace only 0,14% of all contacts. We found like others2 that BLS solves most cases before arrival of EMS. This demonstrates the importance of immediate initiation of BLS and keeping the chain of survival as a concept. Death to imitation van arpels and cleef necklace choking is rare among small children. AbstractAim Choking in children is a feared condition, which potentially can deteriorate to hypoxic cardiac arrest and death. Scientists in Flying Telescope Race to Intercept Pluto's Shadow
Monday, blades slicing through the frigid winter air. It was time to rise above the clouds to see Pluto slide across the face of a distant star a rare celestial alignment that scientists around the world had been anticipating for years.
As the plane hurtled down the runway, the plucky bass and rumbling baritone of Johnny Cash singing "I Walk the Line" filled the communications headsets.
The lights of Christchurch, New Zealand fell away, and scientists on board the flying telescope the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) quickly got to work. For the next eight hours, the 2.5 meter telescope would stare into the sky, while the crew tried to fly it right through Pluto's shadow.
If all went well, the team would collect crucial data on the dwarf planet's atmosphere, which no one even knew existed until 1988. When combined with the New Horizons Pluto flyby on July 14, the night's observations would help scientists decipher the last three decades of data gathered from Earth.
(Read about the Pluto flyby in National Geographic's July cover story.)
For this to work, we would need to fly the plane right through the center of the shadow cast by Pluto as it crossed the face imitation vca necklace of that star a line that would prove hard to catch. After all, the shadow is only as wide as Pluto itself. And plotting a course that accounts for orbital velocities, cosmic alignment, science observations, other airplanes and the speed of a Boeing 747? It's not simple.
That's why "I Walk the Line" was just the song to see us off.
Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It
Called an occultation, the event would last just two minutes, and it would be visible only from a narrow wedge along Earth's surface.
Seven miles below us, teams of astronomers had gathered in more than a half dozen locations in southern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, the land masses predicted to fall within the Pluto size shadow. Meanwhile, we would fly high above the southern Pacific Ocean, where clouds could not obscure our view.
"The airplane makes all the difference in the world. It's never cloudy, and you can go exactly where you want to," said Ted Dunham of the Lowell Observatory, one of the scientists on the flight. "And," he added with a grin, "it's a big telescope."
Our goal was to intercept Pluto's shadow at the precise moment the dwarf world darkened the face of that faraway star. If we succeeded, three instruments on board would gather crucial data about Pluto's misbehaving atmosphere. Two would be keeping an eye on the sky in visible wavelengths, the other in infrared.
Together, the data would help scientists figure out how Pluto's atmosphere has evolved over the 27 years we've known about it, and perhaps solve some mysteries that emerged during the very first Pluto occultation.
Plus, scientists will compare the data with observations from the New Horizons spacecraft, which will buzz by Pluto on July 14 and return the first ever close up views of the dwarf world.
"We can directly compare this profile to the one derived from New Horizons in two weeks," said MIT's Michael Person, principal investigator on the flight. "That'll help us calibrate all of the observations we've been making for 20 years, and all of the observations we'll make after New Horizons leaves."
Occultations let scientists turn those faraway stars into flashlights that can reveal details about a world's atmospheric structure and composition, its weather, the world's width, and whether it's surrounded by rings or moons.
"It goes to show how rich these events are, and they only last for 90 seconds," said Dunham, who discovered rings around Uranus during a 1977 occultation.
But early attempts van cleef turquoise necklace knock off to observe Pluto occultations, in 1965, 1980, and 1985, were woefully unsuccessful. Twice, this was because of unfortunate viewing coordinates. Once, explosions from an ongoing air war between Israel and Jordan made the data difficult to interpret.
It wasn't until 1988, when another telescope took to the sky, that we finally got a good look at an eclipsing Pluto. The results were every bit as profound as expected: Pluto had an atmosphere, and though it was thin, it was remarkably puffy. At that time, planet Pluto was nearing the point in its egg shaped orbit where it was closest to the sun. Scientists expected that as Pluto moved farther from our home star, the dropping temperatures might lead to atmospheric collapse.
In other words, the entire atmosphere "should turn to ice and land on the ground," Person said.
Trouble is, data from the next occultation, in 2002, suggested the opposite: Pluto's atmosphere had gotten puffier. Now, 27 years after that first observation, scientists are still waiting for Pluto's air to freeze out and fall onto the ground. They're also still trying to decipher some curious kinks in the original data that suggest a low altitude layer of haze might hug the planet. The new observations could help with that as will the New Horizons flyby.
"I'm really glad we have this opportunity so close to the flyby," Dunham said. "We get to cheat and look up the answer in the back of the book."
Which Line Are We Walking, Again?
When scientists recalculated the intercept point, this time accounting for the curvature of the Earth, the point had moved even farther closer to 300 kilometers away from the original estimate.
"We're scared imitation van cleef & arpels alhambra necklace of it," Person said, taking a look at the map.
"So you don't want to make a judgment and override this?" asked NASA's Jeffrey Van Cleve, who was helping plot the new flight plan.
No, Person said. They would take a gamble on the new coordinates.
Ironically, the new target was incredibly close to Christchurch. "If we had stayed on the runway and opened the door, we could have done this," Van Cleve joked. "That's called the Mach 0 flight plan."
