Syrian refugees settling in

From the west end of Vancouver to Chilliwack, government assisted Syrian refugees are settling in unexpected areas thanks to relatively affordable pockets of housing and the generosity of landlords and the public. between Nov. 4, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2016.

During that time, there were two major influxes of government assisted Syrian refugees, with more than 40,000 people resettled in Canada. Those were the people tracked in the report.

"This was a first for us," Chris Friesen, the society's director of settlement services, said of the report.

Where these families settle in Metro Vancouver largely correlates with where they can find affordable housing. Government assisted Syrian refugee households receive one year of federal resettlement income assistance, the amount depending on family size and composition. For instance, a family with two adults and three children would receive $1,399 to $1,499 per month.

Almost three quarters of the refugees settled by the Immigrant Services Society found permanent homes in the suburbs, largely because of the need to find large rental units to house big families within constrained budgets. for more than a decade, and has the largest concentration of Syrian refugee households in the province.

The city replica van cleef cosmos ring is home to 1,082, or 43 per cent, of the Syrian refugees who were settled by the Immigrant Services Society.

The Tri Cities, Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver have also traditionally received large numbers of government assisted refugees, and this wave was no different.

"There is no way or hope in hell on welfare rates that anybody can live on the west side of Vancouver without some support, and that's where the generosity came in from homeowners, landlords, faith communities you name it," said Friesen.

The same phenomenon occurred in areas like Richmond, Ladner and more expensive neighbourhoods in cities such as Surrey.

Langley, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Chilliwack ended up becoming unexpected destinations for refugees, who would not normally venture so far from the services they need, because of cheaper rents and larger units.

"It's really a kind of search for affordability," he said.

Friesen said the report is meant to be a resource that will help all levels of government and service organizations determine how to best serve Syrian refugees.

Mike Buda, executive director of the TransLink Mayors' Council, replica van cleef & arpels ring price received a copy of the report, along with all of the mayors. He said it is important information for TransLink replica van cleef engagement ring price because immigrants in general and refugees in particular are disproportionately more likely to use transit than the average Canadian.

Although the numbers aren't high enough to shape transit policy at this time, if the patterns continue, then there may be a higher demand for transit in areas that are currently underserved.

Signs of strong season buoy Greater Victoria marinas

and Canadian visitors show up at Greater Victoria marinas.

A new luxury marina may finally get started in Victoria's harbour and a marina owner in Sidney is planning a four storey condominium development on the upland.

"Definitely, there's been a rebound in the market over the last year," said Greg Horne, co owner of Custom Yacht Sales Ltd. in Sidney. dollar.

"We've exported a fair number of boats and replica van cleef and arpels alhambra ring I know a lot of the other brokerages have as well."

There's also been some pent up demand in the local market, which represents more than 50 per cent of sales, Horne said. Alberta residents and other Canadians make up 25 to 35 per cent of the market and the balance are Americans.

All categories are seeing sales. "Everything from luxury yachts to sport fishermen to family cruisers are selling. Before it used to be the high end where we were van cleef alhambra ring replica getting activity." He categorizes a luxury yacht at $500,000 plus. "Then the spring market, coinciding with the Victoria Boat Show in April, just spurred a whole bunch of activity."

Recreational boating plays a major role in the capital region's economy, where everything from rowboats to luxury yachts are built and repaired and supplies are sold. Vessels visiting local harbours bring tourism dollars to the region.

Fishing charters, whale and wildlife viewing trips, and paddling are all part of this world.

Canada's recreational boating industry accounted for about $4.4 billion in annual direct revenues and employed 40,000, said a 2012 report titled the Economic Impact of Recreational Boating in Canada, released by the National Marine Manufacturers' Association.

Canadians own more than 4.3 million boats, according to the report.

Parksville boat broker Guy Robertson handles the lower end of the boat buying market. Many people are looking to convert cheap commercial fishboats or tugs into pleasure craft.

He recently sold a 75 foot steel tug boat, built in 1944, that had replica van cleef & arpels butterfly ring been derelict in Deep Bay.

"That boat will be turned into a half million dollar yacht in probably eight months time," Robertson said. "Just to have a boat with an old diesel motor that burns $10 an hour to drive at eight knots cruising the coast is kind of a dream for a lot of people."

Greater Victoria is a haven for boaters because of its proximity to scenic, sheltered waters, ferry terminals and Victoria International Airport.

"We've got probably the best cruising in North America," said Mark Dickinson, president of Van Isle Marina in Sidney.

Dickson took over Van Isle from his father, Steve, who established the marina with 35 slips in 1955. Van Isle, which recently blasted out reefs to expand its area for moorage, now has 510 slips and room to store another 95 boats on dry land. Dickinson plans to turn the marina over to his daughter, Dana, and son, Greg, who are both involved in the business.

A "huge job generator" at Van Isle has been a haul out site for vessels to be repaired or stored, he said.

Modern marinas have to cater with services boaters now expect, such as Wi Fi, Dickinson said.

Modern cruisers have high tech navigational aids and conveniences such as microwaves and dishwashers.

For Van Isle, 2013 delivered record boat sales and "so far this year, we are running parallel to last year, which is a good sign," Dickinson said. "We are off to a great start. The weather has been great and we have had lots of reservations so far. Day long weekends already."

The majority of visiting boaters are from Washington state, with others arriving from Vancouver, Alberta, Oregon and California, she said.

Port Sidney Marina owner Kim Pullen said summer visitor numbers look strong.

That's made up of "Canadian boaters, who are weather dependent, so we are looking for a good summer. And then you've got your American boaters, who are currency dependent and that looks good."

Pullen had offered the 320 slip marina for sale at $17.2 million but said this week that it is not on the market at this time.

Meanwhile, construction could start "within a few weeks" on the Victoria International Marina, said Larry Halgren, spokesman for the project.

Victoria police video camera trial begins

A trial program in which police will be able to record their interactions with the public on video and audio through equipment attached to their uniforms has been given the go ahead after concerns regarding privacy were resolved last week.

Earlier this year, Fairfax Media reported hermes men belt replica the so called uniform cams which are already in place in the United States and other Australian states, such as New South Wales were to be tested by police in the southern region of Melbourne, before the trial run was criticised by the police union for its potential to undermine privacy and public trust in police.

Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said on Tuesday that he saw no reason for the test to not go replica Hermes belts france ahead after a "series of exhaustive reviews and consultations with the Commissioner for Law Enforcement Data Security", mainly regarding privacy, were finalised last week.

He said the trial would begin today and last until March. In total, the test would cost $25,000 over the three months and involve 20 police from Frankston, and would eventually be evaluated, with public input, before being potentially enforced.

"We will be seeking feedback from members of the community . around their perceptions and views whether or not this is an appropriate course to take," he said.

Police would be using cameras from VIEVU, Reveal Media and Wolfcom, and each camera would cost between $800 and $1150.

Assistant Commissioner Cornelius said the objective of the pilot was to "test this technology and the rules governing the interaction between police and the community that we serve".

"We want to address any concerns members of the public may have about privacy and how these recordings may be used in relation to subsequent matters."

He said police would tell people that they were being recorded but would not need to ask for their permission.

"When I've actually told someone that they're being recorded, it's amazing how much their behaviour changes. I have to say that's a good thing If we recorded covertly, you wouldn't get that benefit," he said.

"If you're being told by a police officer that you're being recorded, that should be a bit of a wake up call to stop behaving like an idiot."

All recordings would be uploaded to a docking station before being burnt on to a DVD, the Assistant Commissioner said, and the DVD would then be registered as an exhibit.

The recordings would initially be kept for seven years, and would be subject to data and media storage legislation, the Assistant Commissioner said.

"If the information needed to be retained for evidential proposes, it would be retained as any other exhibit," he said.

"If the material is in no way required, that standard legislation that is available under the archives would apply an initial period of seven years, and then we would review that period if we needed to keep it any longer."

Victoria Police spokeswoman Kate Fawcett said there would be some circumstances where fake hermes belts whosale police would be required to release the vision.

"For example, if the vision is going to be used as evidence in court, we would generally supply the defence a copy of that vision. That said, exclusions do apply each case is unique."

Ms Fawcett said people were welcome to apply through Freedom of Information to obtain any footage, "but in terms of actually getting it, it would have to go through the usual FOI process".

The recordings would be made at the discretion of each police officer, Assistant Commissioner Cornelius said, and Victoria Police had "no expectation that the first thing an officer should do [when they interact with the public] is activate their recording device".

"Our primary focus is that officers look first to their safety, and then to the health and safety of the members of the community," he said.

It was an advantage that the trial fake hermes mens belt comes at the busiest time of the year for police, the Assistant Commissioner said, which will give police an "opportunity to test this approach in an environment where public and officer contact is quite high".
Seeing the future of fashion in London

Sarah Mower is a fashion journalist and critic for US Vogue and an advocate for young designers. She is chair of the International Fashion Showcase, a festival of emerging designers organised by the British Council and the British Fashion Council during London Fashion Week, as well as the British Fashion Council's Ambassador for Emerging Talent and Chair of the New Gen committee.

(CNN)As international fashion editors and store buyers fly in from New York to London fashion week today, they're arriving gripped by replica van cleef perlee ring replica an existential crisis.

Disruption has finally hit the designer fashion industry as corporations react with a kind of panic to the cascading consequences of social media, e commerce and churning speed of copyist fast fashion.

On all sides, the cry goes up: what is the future of this industry?

Well, they've come to the right place for a preview. London is fashion's best vantage point for picking up what young people think, what's on their minds, and how they want the world to be, and it now stands as an international smorgasbord of creative ideas.

From Kate to Charlie: Vogue 100 features rare celebrity portraits

London is the city to see new movements taking shape: a whole rising generation of women entrepreneurs, designers who were the first to challenge gender stereotypes, and voices bringing really surprising cultural points of view to the city from all over the world.

This week, amongst all the established and independent labels which are showing, a marginal cultural fashion event on the calendar is already grabbing headlines.

At the fifth International Fashion Showcase at Somerset House, 80 designers from 24 countries have been invited to London to show their imagined ideal worlds in an exhibition named ' Fashion Utopias'.

Whereas New York, Milan and Paris are the strongholds of established brands and giant conglomerates, London, in its special position as a multicultural crossroads, took a bet on becoming a live environment for supporting and developing new businesses.

British fashion education has been a magnet for international students for decades. Many decide to stay and start businesses here, absorbed into a thriving mixed community of talent we now naturally think of 'London designers' rather than 'British'.

The UK fashion industry now makes a 26 billion ($37 billion) direct contribution to the home economy.

That is down to the fact that London has also become capital for international tourists and a domicile for the super wealthy over the last decade.

But in no small part, that London is replica van cleef wedding ring price seen as a uniquely vibrant source of creative originality is also a long term testament to something softer: trusting in the potential of the young and the value of inclusiveness.

The visitors who plunge into the packed show schedule this weekend will be experiencing that broad and mixed economy in action, and, if they look well enough, taking home food for thought.

Savage Beauty: The strange and stunning fashions of Alexander McQueen

Burberry will show in a tent in Kensington Gardens, and the Alexander McQueen show in the splendor of Whitehall.

Accessory brands will take the catwalk, the long established Mulberry, with Johnny Coca as the new creative director, and the successful burgeoning shoe designers Charlotte Olympia replica van cleef and arpels between the finger ring and Sophia Webster.

Fashion is a hard nosed commercial industry. Times are tough, and fashion, like every other business, feels the fear of global economic tremors. Yet this much we know in London: the answers to what the future will become always lies in what young people find relevant.

Van Persie TMs headers bookend dramatic Dutch rise and fall

(Reuters) When Netherlands striker Robin van fashion cheap hermes handbags Persie put away a spectacular diving header against world champions Spain on a balmy afternoon at last year's World Cup it set them on the way to a 5 1 win and the promise of glory.

The Dutch finished third in Brazil after thumping the dempralised hosts 3 0, having narrowly lost on penalties to Argentina in the semi finals, and the future looked bright with their fans hoping they could dominate in Europe.

Just over a year later in Amsterdam on Tuesday another Van Persie header bookended an alarming fall from grace when he sent the ball into his own net as the Dutch lost 3 2 at home to the Czech Republic and failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

The drastic decline from bronze in Brazil to being forced to watch the European Championship in France from the sidelines has left the country perplexed and searching for answers.

Blame has been apportioned widely, with fingers pointed at those running Dutch football, to a lack of tactical flexibility and the consequences of the steady demise of Dutch competitiveness at club level in European competition.

But it is likely that the real reason for the fall from grace has to do with the loss of form and influence of a quartet of world class players past the peak of their replica hermes handbags outlet powers, who the Dutch still placed at the centre of their hopes.

Van Persie, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart had been the heartbeat of a Netherlands side that finished second and third at the last two World Cups but their influence waned badly in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The injured Van der Vaart hardly played, Van Persie seemed to run out of legs and Robben was hurt at a crucial juncture in the campaign.

Louis van Gaal had always planned to leave after Brazil but his single mindedness and motivational qualities were not replicated by successor Guus Hiddink, even though he had taken the Netherlands to a World Cup semi final in 1998.

While van replica birkin handbags Gaal bucked tradition and dispensed with the 4 3 3 formation at last year's World Cup, Hiddink went back to the old Holland school approach and promptly lost key qualifiers.

He later resigned with assistant Danny Blind taking over, only to lose three of the last four Group A matches to leave the Dutch fourth behind the Czechs, Iceland and Turkey who qualified automatically as the best third placed finishers.

There is a picture emerging now that our team can compete comfortably against strong teams because they can match them in terms of ability skill. But against poorer teams, we don TMt seem to be able to adapt and build a gameplan, said former captain and coach Johan Cruyff in his newspaper column this week.

The Dutch dropped points against Iceland and Turkey in their Euro 2016 qualifying group as well as the Czechs.

It shows that the achievement in Brazil was not properly analysed and Hermes birkin bags fake the lessons not learnt, added Cruyff, who played in the team that finished third at the European Championship in 1976 after losing to the Czechs in the semi finals.
Stars will be stars

If you can cast your mind back to the early days of 2006, back to those slightly more innocent first few weeks of the year when James Frey was still considered more memoirist than novelist and Mel Gibson anti Semitism was a presumption, not a documented fact, you might remember a time when the orbital paths of the celebrity world seemed eerily close to the more mundane, humble revolutions of the average person. At long last, Paris Hilton star seemed to be on the wane, Britney Spears was settling into an apparently happy and uneventful domestic rut with Kevin Federline, and Lindsay Lohan was finally fessing up to some of her food issues. Even Angelina Jolie seemed content with having a baby the old fashioned way, announcing to the world she actually made one with Brad Pitt. The stars were getting downright average, or so it briefly seemed.

But it wasn long before events just around the start of February, with the announcement of the Heather Locklear/Richie Sambora split, the unearthing of Paris Hilton personal diaries and Britney Spears visit from the Department of Children and Family Services for driving with her baby on her lap served to remind us all that there a massive difference between the everyday world, full of house chores and grocery shopping, copy van cleef and arpel clover necklace and the universe inhabited by the souls whose names populate the gossip pages.

From that point on, 2006 was basically a yearlong reminder that, despite what Us Weekly wants you to believe, stars are not just like us for instance, we don bounce our cellphones off the heads of our hired help, or go on racist tirades during our arrests or stand up acts, or fly our 150 closest celebrity buddies to 15th century Italian castles to attend our Giorgio Armani tailored weddings. In the gossip netherworld of slippery innuendo and hard to confirm assertions is there a clear hierarchy between a source and a source close to the couple? it nice to occasionally have a hard nugget of fact to hang one hat on. And so in sifting through this year gossip trailings, the Fix has decided to imitate the researchers approach, at least in spirit, and attempt to use the inflexible laws of math and science to help illuminate what were really this year biggest stories, trends, themes, memes and moments and, we hope, make clear other ways in which celebrities are special. Using the most technologically advanced tools available, including Google, Nexis and Microsoft Word word count feature, we analyzed the year that fake van cleef necklaces was using the Fix as a primary source text but linking far and wide to give you a handy, at a glance index to what happened in gossip in 2006.

It not always pretty, and while some of what we found was predictable Britney Spears was the most mentioned celebrity other facts may surprise you. When Britney Spears announced in May that she had another baby on the way, we knew it was going to be a Spears heavy year, and indeed the pop starlet matriarch appeared the most often in these pages over the past 12 months, with 82 appearances in the Fix, for a total of 6,280 words, or about 30 double spaced pages. By contrast, Mel Gibson, despite a high profile arrest/racist outburst and a box office topping film, garnered a scant 27 mentions, for 2,865 words, which makes for only about 14 double spaced pages. Other big names this year:

Tom Cruise: 80

Paris Hilton: 76

Lindsay Lohan: 60

Madonna: 58

Angelina Jolie: 56

Brad Pitt: 54

Katie Holmes: 54

Kevin Federline: 45

Pete Doherty: 33

Jennifer Aniston: 30

Nicole Kidman: 29

Tale of the tape

Every year has its gossip fights the skirmishes between Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton have gone on unabated all year, despite reports that they now actually friends but 2006 saw more than its fair share of fistfights, an oddly large number of which seemed to take place in bathrooms.
