it also caused a significant loss in their players. from Skyzhay's blog

What could Jagex do to improve OSRS GP longevity in the current time when Runescape appears to be dead? At least, from my point of view, it's hard to imagine a game that well-known as Runescape crashing in such a way.

With my bias, I would say that the shift from simple skills to harder-to-pick up activities was a bad choice. When I was a player, Dungeoneering didn't seem like a skill that could be used in any other area. Summoning at least can be utilized in most situations.

Their graphic design focus was disappointing. They missed huge opportunities. (Elf City? The quest system in Runescape is my favourite out of all MMOs. But I don't believe there has been much new content released in recent times. Perhaps I'm being bitter, but Runescape would still be strong if they went in an entirely different direction.

The issue is that they made decisions that were controversial and didn't listen to their supporters. EoC is a great example. Although it allowed players to play things in the game which they had never done previously, it also caused a significant loss in their players. EoC may be a better option than the other options however is it worth the loss of so many players? I don't believe so. It would be possible to save hundreds of cancellations if only you were willing to compromise.

They have also been taking advantage of Runescape players to fund several failures. Every dime they've spent on Stellar Dawn, Mechscape, Thirdscape, a string of free iPhone games and of course the huge fee for licencing the Transformers brand, as well as the amount of money that was put into the incomplete Transformers game itself has ALL been sourced from the pockets of Runescape players.

Jagex's other flops OSRS gold for sale (8 Realms. Funorb. etc.).) remain a disappointment. may have brought in some money, I doubt it covered the developments costs for those either and we've had to pay for these as well. Runescape is devoid of quests as developers are busy working on other games which aren't played.
