New Air Jordans 2019 is set to release another Fresh Prince-inspired Air Jordan 5, but this time using the original Air Jordan 5 Grape that Will Smith wore during the early episodes of the show. The Air Jordan 5 Retro NRG "Fresh Prince" gets its inspiration from Smith's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air persona from the '90s TV show. Rather than concoct a new colorway like it did back in 2013, Jordan Brand looked to an OG influence for this release by reissuing the sneaker's "Grape" make up with a new twist.
In honor of Will Smith's – aka the Fresh Prince – 50th birthday, the Air Jordan Shoes will be releasing an alternate take on the illustrious Air Jordan 5 "Grape" inspired by the laceless pair he frequently wore on set. This Air Jordan 5 looks exactly like the OG Grapes, but with some added detailing. It includes "West Philadelphia" text underneath the tongue, Nike Air branding on the heels, no laces (sealed lace holes) – as a nod to the way Will Smith wore them, and Fresh Prince inspired insoles.
2019 Jordan will celebrate longtime ambassador Will Smith's 50th birthday in a big way next week with a special retro that pays homage to one of his most memorable characters. Dubbed the Air Jordan 5 NRG Fresh Prince, this Air Jordan 5 is a slightly altered version of the Air Jordan 5 Grape. In addition to celebrating his 50th birthday, the shoe takes inspiration from Will Smith's character from the 90s sitcom "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air." Taking a cue from Smith's preference to wear the shoes without laces, this NRG retro comes in slip-on form without its traditional shoelaces, lace holes, and lace locks. Although the laceless feature has been met with mixed reactions, this will be the first time the "Grape" colorway has been re-released with its original Nike Air branding, so there's still appeal for purists.
