But while investors are betting big on clean tech once again, the industry hasn't produced many unicorns — or startups with a valuation of $1 billion or more. Why aren't there more billion-dollar startups? One possible explanation is a shortage of funding, relative to other industries like healthcare. Another is that clean tech companies don't generate, as one investor calls it, “a network of users.” “In most cases, these companies are not creating the things that cause a lot of social media and other companies to sizzle, which is new networks,” said Tom Blum, a member of the Clean Energy Ventures Group, which funds clean tech startups. “In most cases, you're actually just replacing commodities that already exist.”There are, however, some noteworthy exceptions.Business Insider compiled a list of the most valuable startups in clean tech, based on data from PitchBook and Crunchbase, and our own reporting. The list reveals five unicorns — three of which make batteries — in addition to several startups with a valuation of greater than $400 million. Startups are listed below by their latest post-money valuations, based on data from PitchBook or company comments, except for where marked with an asterisk. The list doesn't include startups that make electric vehicles (EVs) or scooters, EV infrastructure, fuels from biomass, or those that provide services to highly localized markets. Unless otherwise noted, the data come from PitchBook.

Canadian Dollar Forecast: USD/CAD Risks Catapulting Higher as Reversal Unfolds

While tensions remain high between the US and Iran, they appear to be easing slightly with the US refraining from taking further action. Consequently, oil prices have pared their initial upside, which in turn has weighed on commodity linked currencies, such as the Canadian Dollar. That said, USD/CAD looks attractive for a reversal, having broken back above the 1.3000 handle. The pair now tests 1.3053, which marks the 23.6% fib, whereby a closing break above raises scope for a move towards 1.3100-10.To get more news about WikiFX, you can visit wikifx official website.
Aside from geopolitics, eyes will be on BoC Governor Poloz at 19:00GMT (14:00ET) who is scheduled to take part in a fireside chat. There is a risk that the Governor could provide a more cautious outlook from a domestic standpoint following the recent economic growth data, where Canada showed a contraction in growth for the first time in 8 months at -0.1%. Elsewhere, focus will also be on the Canadian jobs report on Jan 10th and Business Outlook Survey on Jan 13th.

New Zealand Dollar Will Extend Upsides in December

With the US Dollar Index falling by about 2.4% in November, the prices of the dollar against major currencies went down across the board. Among the non-US currencies against the US dollar, the Norwegian krone was crowned champion in November, increasing nearly 8%. Such a boom is attributed to rising oil prices. In terms of major currencies against the US dollar, however, the New Zealand dollar became the biggest winner in November, climbing nearly 6%. Its performance is even more striking if measured from the March low of 0.5468 to date, which is a sharp rise of 28.65%.To get more news about WikiFX, you can visit wikifx official website.
Among November's best performers, the Australian dollar came second with a 4.91% rise. The rest of the list is composed of the British pound, up 2.65%; the Canadian dollar, up 2.53%; the Chinese yuan, up 2.16%; the euro, up 1.89%; the Swiss franc, up 1.3%; and the Japanese yen, up 0.7%. This list shows that AUD and NZD, as currencies of commodity-exporting countries, have outpaced their peers due to the support from the upcoming vaccination and the dynamic expansion of global stock markets. The AUD's performance was inferior to the NZD's because Australia saw severe outbreaks and continued reduction of China's import dependence on its products.

In fact, NZD has been poised to rebound from the low of 0.6553 when New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was re-elected with an overwhelming victory on Oct. 17. At the time of writing, NZD/USD has reached a two-year high of 0.7047. The positive dynamic was attributed to Ardern's landslide victory, which shrugged off political uncertainties. But the most important reason is New Zealand's success in fighting against Covid-19. Led by Ardern, the country outperformed other peers in Europe and the US and even beat neighboring Australia. As of Nov. 30, the country only had a total of 2056 cases confirmed, of which 25 people have died from the virus. Its economy secured prudential stability without any significant lockdown. Although New Zealand's GDP in Q3 has not yet been announced, NZD is expected to embrace an uninterrupted rally as the financial market has braced for a sharp rebound. As a commodity currency, the New Zealand dollar is mostly sensitive to the prices of dairy products. Thus another boost for NZD is the international dairy prices that have been growing since September.
The New Zealand dollar had been receiving pressure since mid-August, when the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) announced the expansion of quantitative easing and signaled negative interest rates. But a dramatic shift appeared recently. New Zealand Finance Minister Grant Robertson said on Nov. 24 that the government was reviewing policies relating to the housing market and had sought advice from the central bank. With worries that New Zealand's loose monetary policy would push local property into bubble territory, Robertson advised the RBNZ Governor Adrian Orr to include stabilizing house prices as a factor for consideration in the remit when formulating monetary policy. The New Zealand dollar rocketed in the wake of such news. Everyone believed that New Zealand would not only ignore the negative interest rate, but also no longer increase the money supply., implying a halt to the RBNZ's quantitative easing.
Actually, effective vaccines are available for the world in early to mid-December since major pharmaceutical companies in the UK and the US have successively announced successful development. It will help resume economic activities and lift the global economy and stock markets, putting a premium on NZD and AUD. Therefore, from my point of view, the above positive factors will encourage the New Zealand dollar to triumph over other non-US currencies in December.

How to Select FR4 Thickness

When ordering a laminate board for a PCB project, the designer or electrical engineer must specify the FR4 PCB thickness. This is measured in inch-based units, such as the thousandth of an inch, or thou, or millimeters, depending on which is most appropriate for the setting. The thickness of a sheet of FR4 ranges widely depending on the needs of the project, but it tends to range from ten thou to three inches.
While board thickness may not seem like a significant factor in the design of a PCB, in reality, it is an essential feature. Board thickness affects several aspects of the board’s functionality, which is why several factors are considered in determining the thickness of a board for design. These include the following. To get more news about fr4 board, you can visit pcbmake official website.

Space: Thinner May Be Better
If space concerns the designer, a thinner FR4 board tends to be preferable. This is a predominant factor for the manufacture of smaller devices, like USB connectors and many Bluetooth accessories. Even for larger projects, smaller FR4 PCBs tend to be favored to save space within the device.

Connections: The Wrong One Could Result in Damage
A two-sided PCB design requires an edge connector to join the two sides. This can be a major limiting factor for the final size of the PCB since PCB edge connectors only fit a particular set of PCB thicknesses. The mating portion of a connector has to fit snugly on the side of the PCB, or else risk slippage or damage to the PCB. This is one of the primary reasons why circuit design comes before choosing materials for the circuit.

Impedance Matching: Essential to Maintaining Board Function
Every multi-layered board acts as a capacitor on adjacent layers. This is why the thickness of this board is so important — the thickness of the PCB FR4 determines the thickness of the dielectric, which in turn affects the value of the capacitance.
This is an especially key factor for some high-frequency PCBs, such as RF and microwave designs. High-frequency designs focus on impedance matching as an essential component to maintain optimal board function, so getting the right capacitance for each layer is crucial.

Ericsson wins BT’s 5G radio contract for London

Ericsson ERICb.ST said on Wednesday it had been selected by Britain’s BT BT.L to provide 5G radio equipment in London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and other major UK cities, building on the contract it signed earlier this year for core technology. To get more news about BT PCB, you can visit pcbmake official website.

The contract comes after the British government said in July it would ban China’s Huawei Technologies from any presence in the country’s 5G networks by the end of 2027.

Once the deployment is completed, Ericsson will manage around 50% of BT’s 5G traffic, the Swedish company said, adding that it will also modernise the company’s existing 2G and 4G radio networks.

Ericsson President and Chief Executive Borje Ekholm said the win strengthened the company’s relationship with BT.

“By deploying 5G in these key areas, we are yet again demonstrating our technology leadership in population-dense and high-traffic locations,” he said.

BT signed a contract with Ericsson rival Nokia NOKIA.HE last month to provide 5G radio equipment for multiple towns and cities across Britain, as well as rural locations.

What is halogen free PCB(HF PCB) substrate

According to jpca-es-01-2003 standard: PCB CCL with chlorine (C1) and bromine (BR) content less than 0.09% wt (weight ratio) is defined as halogen-free copper clad laminate. (at the same time, total CI + br ≤ 0.15% [1500ppm])To get more news about Halogen Free PCB, you can visit pcbmake official website.
2. Why should halogen be banned in PCB
Halogen refers to the halogen group elements in the periodic table of chemical elements, including fluorine (f), chlorine (CL), bromine (BR) and iodine (1). At present, flame retardant FR4 substrate, FR4, CEM-3, etc., flame retardant is mostly brominated epoxy resin. In brominated epoxy resin, tetrabromobisphenol A, polybrominated biphenyl, polymerized polybrominated diphenyl ether and polybrominated diphenyl ether are the main blocking fuel for copper clad laminates, which are low cost and compatible with epoxy resin. However, studies by relevant institutions have shown that halogen containing flame retardant materials (polybrominated biphenyl PBB: polybrominated diphenyl ether PBDE) will emit dioxin dioxin (TCDD) and benzfuran (benzfuran) when they are burned on fire. They have a large amount of smoke, bad smell, high toxic gases, carcinogenic, and can not be discharged after ingestion, which is not environmentally friendly and affects human health. Therefore, the EU initiated a ban on PBB and PBDE as flame retardants in electronic information products. According to the same document issued by the Ministry of information industry of China, the electronic information products put into the market shall not contain lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls or polybrominated diphenyl ether. Six substances, such as PBB and PBDE, are prohibited by EU law. It is understood that PBB and PBDE are basically not used in the copper clad laminate industry. Bromine flame retardant materials other than PBB and PBDE are mostly used, such as tetrabromobisphenol A, dibromophenol, etc., whose chemical formula is cishizobr4. There are no laws and regulations on this kind of copper clad laminate containing bromine as flame retardant. However, this kind of copper clad laminate containing bromine will release a large amount of toxic gas (brominated type) during combustion or electrical fire. When PCB is used for hot air leveling and component welding, the board will also release a small amount of hydrogen bromide due to the influence of high temperature (> 200); whether dioxins will also be produced is still under evaluation. Therefore, FR4 board containing tetrabromobisphenol A flame retardant is not prohibited by law and can be used, but can not be called halogen free PCB board.
3. Principle of halogen free PCB(HF PCB) substrate
At present, most of halogen free PCB materials are mainly phosphorus and phosphorus nitrogen series. When the phosphorus containing resin is burned, it will decompose into metapolyphosphoric acid, which has strong dehydration property, forms carbonization film on the surface of polymer resin, insulates the burning surface of resin from contacting with air, extinguishes the fire and achieves flame retardant effect. The high polymer resin containing phosphorus and nitrogen compounds produces non combustible gas during combustion, which helps the resin system to be flame retardant.

ADVANCED AND NON-STANDARD PCB MANUFACTURING CAPABILITIES

There was a time when the PCB manufacturing industry included a fair number of bucket shops, so called because much of their processing was done in small portable tubs filled with etchants, solvents, and other mysterious solutions. They cranked out very basic, low-cost, low-complexity PCBs, using equipment and methods that were questionable at best. Their business and environmental practices were often similarly questionable. To get more news about Cavity PCB, you can visit pcbmake official website.

The good news for circuit board customers is that bucket shops are a thing of the past. Those fabricators who remain viable can execute all basic production steps repeatedly, with a low likelihood of scrap, on printed circuit boards that would have been considered insanely complex just a few years ago. Still, there are higher-end processes that not every supplier is equipped to do.

It is important to be sure that the circuit board you are about to order is going to a PCB manufacturer that can handle several difficult design features simultaneously. Otherwise your order could be scrapped, or it could show up on your dock with undetected manufacturing errors that will complicate assembly, installation, or function. The following post explains what some of the more difficult processes are, so that you can be sure to identify an appropriate fabricator for your order.

Controlled Impedance
There was a time when many small to medium shops were not able to support impedance testing, but those days have passed. Controlled impedance PCB designs are now so common that the ability to check impedance results has become a basic requirement for remaining in business. It is now possible to have your order tested no matter where it is built. If you supply the necessary information at the beginning of your project, your boards should arrive with a report of the results. Expect to pay a small up charge per PCB. The up charge covers the cost of setting up and performing the test, which is not done on the same machine as the one used for checking basic continuity. It also covers the potential small increase in fallout for boards which fail impedance testing, despite being free of other manufacturing errors.

Wraparound Edge Plating
Occasionally, it is desirable to form a connection by wrapping the plating around the PCB edge, rather than by means of a standard via hole, so that the edge can serve as a conductor. The fabricator accomplishes the wrap plate by performing an extra primary routing operation immediately after drilling. The purpose of this routing step is to expose the PCB sidewall so that it can be coated with electroless base copper (or an equivalent) in the same manner and at the same time as it is applied to the drilled holes.

After the photographic circuit image has been applied and developed, the electroless layer provides a conductive surface onto which the thicker, more durable electrolytic copper can adhere. If the artwork includes a pad or other shape that defines the routed area as a plated feature, the electrolytic copper plating will coat the routed channel to form the desired connection. While this process adds steps, plus a small amount of complication in the planning of array setups and machining processes, it is not overly difficult to arrive at a good result.
