The Mets whiff at an above-average clip versus righties, so despite drawing Syndergaard, the Cardinals right-hander checks in as a GPP option, albeit a bit contrarian since the win is in jeopardy and the price will be high.The nights second marquee matchup involves Drew Pomeranz and the Boston Red Sox welcoming Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers into Beantown for the opener of a three-game series. It certainly wont be easy for Pomeranz in his second Fenway Park start since the trade, as the visitors are dangerous at the plate. But they also strike out at an above average clip. Supported by one of the leagues most potent offenses, Pomeranz and his 10.2 K/9 are in the mix for tournament play.If you want to start an argument between a numbers-based analyst and someone who primarily watches games and goes by feel, drop the name Michael Pineda. Personally, I lean more to the numbers with an open mind to the likely possibility theres some bad pitching mixed in. By the numbers, Pinedas 10.8 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 should portend to a better ERA than the 5.25 hes recorded. The two contributors hurting the New York Yankees righty are a bloated .342 batting average on balls in play in tandem with an elevated 18 percent home run to fly ball rate. This is the area that likely combines bad luck with bad pitching.The expected ERA of xFIP fleshes the assumed luck out of home run rate and lands Pineda at a much more palatable 3.24. If youre in a seasonal league, its fair to expect Pinedas ERA to regress towards the better mark down the stretch.DFS gamers approach Pineda with opposing mindsets. The number-crunchers consider him a great GPP option since his xFIP says hes a bargain for his price tag. The gut players stack against him, mostly to counter those using him as their pitcher, expecting that hell continue to struggle. Its a great debate, one which will persist until we get a better handle on the next wave of data, namely exit velocity, launch angle and the like.The immediate concern is Pineda squaring off with another sabermetric enigma in Dallas Keuchel. Adding to the intrigue is the fact the Houston Astros provide the platform for Pineda to have a huge strikeout game, or knock him out early. Traditional fantasy enthusiasts may not like this approach, but the best tactic is to deploy Pineda in a GPP then set a different hedge lineup with a Houston stack.Speaking of Keuchel, his actual 4.70 ERA is more than a run higher than his 3.55 xFIP, so he too should see better outcomes down the stretch. It also should be noted that Minute Maid Park is perceived to be a hitters park, since its very homer-friendly, but in fact the venue plays neutral for runs. (Actually, the same is true of Yankee Stadium.) As for this contest, the Yankees dont strike out often, but also arent very potent. The Philadelphia Phillies veteran righty is on the trading block, so theres a slight chance hes scratched, but the more likely scenario is trying to convince a contender he can help them get to the promised land. It wont be easy, as the opposing Miami Marlins are tough at home, but Hellicksons recent success warrants being active in seasonal formats as well as a DFS GPP candidate.AvoidThis being the first day of the scoring period, the conservative approach was taken for spot starters. Granted, there werent many options but its a shorter-than-usual slate. That said, there are not many arms that are no-brainers to avoid, either.Martin Perez and Colin Rea qualify as denoted by their projected game scores below 45.Jorge De La Rosa can be deployed on the road, but when the road leads to Camden Yards, hes best left out of your lineup.Justin Verlander is a tough call. At times, hes pitched like the salad days, but hes now susceptible to really poor outings, especially when facing a strong hitting club like the Red Sox. Lets call it a game-time decision. If Mookie Betts is back, then sitting the Detroit Tigers veteran is defensible.The other borderline call is Daniel Mengden in Arlington. The Oakland Athletics righty has scuffled with control lately, and you dont want to give the Texas Rangers extra base runners. This is a contextual call. If youre league has innings or games started limits, there are likely better options. In the middle, a cluster of colorful, overlapping houses that, from this height, appear to be made from paper maché. In the background, the beach, where the sea laps the sand, and the sand gives way to asphalt which in turn gives way to tall glass buildings, in this place far from the favela.Up here, some people with torn shirts and weathered skin rest their forearms on the wooden balconies and cannot help but be taken in by the view every time they look out. A couple of kilometers away, the same views enjoyed by one of Rio de Janeiros more than 700 favelas will set you back 1,000 reais per night (around $300). In Brazil, luxury and poverty are close neighbors separated by nothing more than air. Down below, the haves; above, the have nots. They all share the same beauty.Filgueira is a military policeman who prefers not to admit how badly things are going for the federal police, who continue to make headlines thanks to protests in which they are campaigning for higher wages in line with the risks they face. Giglio spends a little time with them while inside one of the volunteers from his academy teaches the boys. His mission is to offer them a solution to the difficult reality of life in Vidigal through free boxing lessons.He complains loudly, the government does nothing for the kids in the favelas. Alternately, his speech is interspersed with a genuine gratitude that comes from the pleasure of his work. The satisfaction of accomplishment, to receive a mission to one day go to the favela and be able to help the kids. Thats what Im doing. They pay me by winning a medal. Here, profe, theres the Olympic medal. Giglio has plenty to say on the subject of Esquiva Falc?o, whom he spotted as a youngster at a championship in S?o Paulo. Upon hearing shortly after that Falc?o had stopped competing, he took charge of the situation.He lived in the state of Espirito Santo. I brought him to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 17 to live in my gym, Giglio said. I gave him food, a shower, training so that he could continue boxing. In 2007, he took part in his first national championship where he won the silver medal. In 2008, he was called up to Brazils senior team, and from there things just continued upwards.Three Olympians, hundreds of lives cut shortFalc?os journey took him up beyond the heights from where you can contemplate Vidigals stunning views.
