North Van mayor wants to talk about taking SkyTrain to North Shore

City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto believes it time to consider building a tunnel under Burrard Inlet and extend rapid transit to the already traffic choked North Shore.

North Shore is under gridlock pretty much now and replica Van Cleef & Arpels Clover Necklace white diamond we not even growing, Mussatto told Postmedia News.

The region bridges have the same nine lanes worth of traffic coming in and out of North and West Vancouver that they did in 1960, Mussatto said. Yet the region has absorbed 57 years worth of growth, more commuter traffic to the region and increasing amounts of traffic to and from Squamish and Whistler.

got to expect something has to give, and we feeling it, Mussatto said.

The North Vancouver mayor said he has talked to TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond about doing a level feasibility study to see whether it would make sense to replace the SeaBus with a fixed link crossing between Waterfront Station and Lonsdale Quay.

He said it could be either an extension of the Canada Line or the Millennium and Expo Lines through a bored tunnel, or perhaps a cut and cover option where a route is trenched into the inlet bottom and pre cast sections of concrete are sunk into it.

Or the Metro Vancouver region might consider other options such as an above surface crossing with one of the bridges.

Mussatto said it has to be a longer term consideration after TransLink existing priorities of the Broadway SkyTrain extension and Surrey light rail projects are looked after.

talking about eight, 10 years out, but we need to have those discussions, Mussatto said.

TransLink spokeswoman Jill Drews said TransLink doesn have immediate plans to study a North Shore link, but it would have an opportunity to start discussions with the update of its 30 year regional transportation strategy, which is supposed to happen later this year.

The idea of tunnelling under Burrard Inlet isn new. Plans in the 1950s and 1960s van cleef necklace imitation for Vancouver freeways included proposals for a tunnel under the First Narrows near the Lion Gate Bridge. professor Erik Eberhardt.

long tunnel, a few kilometres long, today would be in the $1 billion range, Eberhardt said. any discussion of cost should be balanced against value, in terms of how it improves the livability of the region.

The challenges, Eberhardt said, would be the geology and geography on either side of the Burrard Inlet. A feasibility study would have to determine how deep a tunnel would have to go down to get to bedrock or soils firm enough to carry a tunnel.

He said builders might have to overcome steep declines to get to depth, but a feasibility study might be helped by the engineering work being done for Metro Vancouver $380 million project to take water mains along the bottom of Burrard Inlet. epaper, Digital Access, Subscriber Rewards), please input your Print Newspaper subscription phone number and postal code.
