Britain's Jack Laugher and Chris Mears dethroned reigning champions China to claim their country's first ever diving gold medal in the men's 3 metre springboard event on Wednesday.

China's Qin Kai and Cao Yuan had to settle for third, with a score of 450.21 compared to Britain's 454.32. The Chinese team, led by Qin, had held the men's 3 metre title since the Beijing Games in 2008.

Sam Dorman and Mike Hixon of the United States took silver after recording 98.04 the highest score of the competition for their final dive.

South Korea's Jin Jong oh shot his way back from the brink of elimination to win his third consecutive gold in the Olympic men's 50 metre pistol event on Wednesday.

With a steadier hand in the final rounds, Jin prevailed over Vietnam's Xuan Vinh Hoang, who made history on Saturday by winning his country's first gold medal.

Kim Song Guk of North Korea won the bronze in his first ever international final.

The 36 year old Jin, ranked No. 1 in the world, is one of the Olympics' most decorated pistol shooters, having won the 50 metre titles at Beijing and London, where he also claimed the 10m air pistol event.

Veteran American Kristin Armstrong claimed a third consecutive road time trial gold to deny former Russian doper Olga Zabelinskaya what would have been a controversial triumph on a rain soaked course at the Rio Games on Wednesday.

Double London medallist Zabelinskaya, who served an 18 month suspension for a banned stimulant and was only cleared to compete in Rio last week, had set the fastest time with only Armstrong still on the 29.7km course.

Swiss Fabian Cancellera won the men's Olympic time trial gold medal on Wednesday, producing a masterful ride around the 54.5km circuit.

Britain's Joseph won gold on the frothy whitewater of Rio's K 1 slalom course on Wednesday.

Clarke, 23, won by a fraction of a second, completing the course in 88.53 seconds, over second place finisher Peter Kauzer, 32, of Slovenia, who clocked in at 88.70 seconds.
