His handlers are planning to retire the horse to stud at seasons end. "As he hit the front with that lead and he opened up three, four lengths I said, Thats it, game over," Stringer said. "There was no way he was going to get beat because hes so game. "There was nothing that was going to get past him today. The flight coming from bloody LA wouldnt have got him overtop the grandstand." The victory was Joshua Trees first this year, ending a six-race winless streak. And Joshua Tree returned to the winners circle for the first time since doing so at last years International ahead of Dandino and Forte Dei Marmi. "Hes a tough horse," Atzeni said. "He came off the bridle very early but to be fair to him, once I set up down he kicked home all the way to the line with the winner. MINNEAPOLIS -- For the third straight off-season, Adrian Peterson will be recovering from surgery. The Minnesota Vikings said their star running back had an operation Thursday to repair his adductor muscle, which is part of the groin. The team said Peterson was expected to be fully recovered in about six weeks, giving him plenty of time to heal before off-season workouts get going. The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia. Peterson rushed for 1,266 yards in 14 games, missing two in December due to a sprained right foot. The groin problem was lingering long before that, though, sapping him of some of his explosiveness. He acknowledged after a loss at Seattle Nov. 17 that the injury was bothering him "a lot." Peterson gained only 65 yards on 21 carries that afternoon, albeit against the leagues best defence. MONTREAL -- Speculation on Jim Popps future with the Montreal Alouettes has been put to rest, at least for now. Dickie Moore Canadiens Jersey Authentic . The only general manager the CFL club has had since it returned to Montreal after a 10-year hiatus in 1996 signed a three-year contract extension on Thursday that runs through the 2017 season. There was concern that the 49-year-old, who was in the final year of his contract, was ready to move on. But the Elkin, N.C. native said: "I plan to be here and fulfil my contract." He did not say if his deal includes an out-clause if he is offered an NFL job. He drew interest ahead of last season from the Indianapolis Colts and rumours of a move south have arisen periodically throughout his tenure with the Alouettes. NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints have placed their franchise tag on Jimmy Graham in order to protect the clubs rights to its star tight end through next season. Vans Sk8 Homme . The move means Graham, barring a holdout, will almost certainly play for New Orleans next season for no less than the tight end franchise tag of $7.04 million.
