The Porcaro garage, which the family had converted to a recording and rehearsal studio, was a place for young players to develop musically and to socialize. Not limited to rock 'n' roll, Porcaro and the other top players of that time also were in the school orchestra, jazz band and even the marching band.
"Jeff just loved to play," recalled Miles Neill, retired Grant High music teacher.
News of Porcaro's death prompted Grant alumni of that era to pick up the telephone and talk among themselves, remembering what it was like to attend a school bursting at the seams with musical talent.
"A lot of us knew that something special was happening," said Rich Sperber, a Grant High graduate. "It was like a school with a great basketball team, except we had great musicians."
The Los Angeles County coroner's office has conducted an autopsy to determine what caused Porcaro's Aug. 5 death. He fell ill after spraying an insecticide in the yard of his Hidden Hills home, shared with his wife, Susan, and the couple's three young boys.
Coroner's officials said the autopsy results will not be available for several weeks.
More than 1,200 mourners attended Porcaro's funeral, including many high profile rock musicians such as Eddie Van Halen, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash and Don Henley, as well as a host of session musicians not known by name to many but heard on thousands of popular recordings.
Porcaro played on hundreds of albums for such stars as Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and John Fogerty. His band, Toto, sold millions of records in the 1970s and 1980s, earning six Grammy awards and worldwide fame.
But his first break came in his senior year 1972 recalled Mercy Leithem, a former girlfriend, now an archeologist. Her name in high school was Marla Baron.
"Jeff was fully an incredible musician at 16 he had rhythm, timing, charisma," said Leithem, who lives in Reseda. Lukather said he was a sophomore when he met classmate Steve Porcaro, a veteran session musician who played keyboards on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album and who is also a member of Toto. The two, along with Mike Porcaro, continued Jeff Porcaro's high school band, Still Life, after he graduated.
By 1977, that band, along with David Paich, who attended Chaminade Prep in the Valley, evolved into Toto. Mike Porcaro, who played with Seals and Crofts after his graduation from Grant, eventually joined Toto after the original bass player moved on.
"There was never a doubt we would be players," said Lukather. "It was either that or become a gardener, and the idea of manual labor didn't appeal to me."
Lukather said he learned to read music, abandoning his approach of playing by ear, in part to keep up with the Porcaros, who all read music fluently. Still, the seriousness with which they approached music did not necessarily apply to other aspects of campus life.
"We used to ditch to play gigs at other schools at lunch," Lukather said. "We'd get caught sometimes and the school people would say, 'You better make it in music.' "
Retired music teacher Neill does not recall troubles of that sort.
"I'm the one who really reaped the benefits of all that talent," he said. "I got to do directing and arranging and got the groups to play difficult material. We didn't just do movements; we would perform entire symphonies."
Lonn Friend, 36, executive editor of RIP magazine and the host of a nationally syndicated heavy metal radio show, took geometry with Lukather and a golf class with Steve Porcaro at Grant. He said he was not part of the Grant musicians' hip social circle but, like other classmates, he did not escape their influence.

When the corpse is not that of an enemy, any image or any image that can be recognised as an individual person is dubious. To be a corpse is, so to speak, to be in the most undignified situation. To be pictured in this state is more compromising than to be pictured naked, or drunk, or on the lavatory. To publish an identifiable image of someone's corpse is considered an insult to the dead. It's not how most of us would wish to be seen or remembered.

Though only a few examples still remain, the deathbed portrait was not then an uncommon form of memorial. Someone died, you called the painter in. A corpse was not seen as such a terrible thing to be. In another, anonymous example from the same decade, the naturalist John Tradescant the Elder lies on his back, swaddled like a baby, ready for the grave, but with an expression of contentment and complacency no less a great man, for all that.
Van Dyck's Venetia Stanley, Lady Digby is not exactly deathlike. It has no slab finality. The image leaves a doubt open, the ghost of a hope. Dead or deeply, peacefully asleep? Perhaps that reflects the Christian's "sure and certain hope" of being resurrected after the Last Judgement, making slumber not a euphemism for death, but a true name for it, since we will rise again. Yet this isn't quite what the picture declares. The corpse may be borderline, but the implied trajectory is downward, and into nothing. Signs of life survive. The woman lies, pale and serene but glowing. Her cheeks are slightly rouged. Her tress of red hair is a trace of living sexiness. Her head rests in her hand, the traditional pose of melancholy thought, and of the dreamer. That's how biblical characters who are having visionary dreams (Jacob, Joseph) are pictured, head in hand. The gesture indicates something still going on.
Some corpse portraits show the deceased tucked up to the neck and clearly horizontal. Here, the space is made Hermes replica belt paris vague. It laps around the dead woman, embraces her, absorbs her and carries her off, to flow emptily out of the picture. She is portrayed, not stone dead, but as a life draining away, a gently fading presence, dreaming and dying together.
Of this portrait, her husband wrote: "This is the onely constant companion I now have. The civil war in El Salvador is the subject of a new film. "Innocent Voices" views the conflict in the 1980s through the eyes of an 11 year old boy. The script was co written by a man who had that perspective. He lived through the events dramatized on the screen. Iris Mann reports. It changed the fact that we could play, you know, after sundown outside. You know, here's the thing, is you can agree or disagree on any particular war. You know, you can be a dove; you can be a hawk; you can be a liberal; you can be a conservative. But I think we all, at least in this country, can agree that no matter what your stance on the war is that children should not be part of it. His first draft was about the band that popularized a protest song outlawed by the Salvadoran government.

MANN: The process of reworking the screenplay was a painful one, says director Luis Mandoki, who's made a number of Hollywood films.
Mr. LUIS MANDOKI (Director, "Innocent Eyes"): And we started a big argument. I ended up grabbing a chair, lashing it against the wall and leaving the room. And I said, Keep your script if you don't want to go there.'
And when I came back half an hour later, he was sobbing. I came, I sat down, I said, So what's happening?' And he said, You always take me to these places,' and he said, I just remembered that there was we faced the final confrontation with soldiers. I was caught amidst this battle, and a guerrilla guy got shot, and I took hold of his M 16 and I pointed it at another soldier. I almost shot him.' And he started crying even more. And I said, Well, you didn't shoot him.' And he said, Yeah, and I feel really guilty because I almost killed another human being. I almost killed another boy.' And I said, OK. He says he described those memories to the child actors, but director Luis Mandoki says it was surprisingly hard to get them to convey the same fear Torres experienced.
Mr. MANDOKI: I was forced to play sound effects of bullets so that they could react to them. And in the beginning, they did, but then they got used to them. Although the gash in his forehead did not need stitches, a UEFA spokesman at the stadium said he was in a state of shock and could not continue. The match was therefore abandoned 40 minutes after he had been struck by the missile.

His Saanich hotel room was also searched and evidence seized. dating back to 1997. He has convictions for trafficking, theft and production of a controlled substance. He was also charged in Mission with uttering threats in December 2012, which was resolved with a peace bond in August 2013.
His first court appearance on the new trafficking charges is scheduled for March 31, at the Victoria Law Courts.
