WASHINGTON -- When womens basketball players at George Washington learned this past offseason that the school had named a new coach for their program, they quickly turned to their cell phones and a team group chat to disseminate any information they could dig up on the hire. Jake Lamb Jersey .It didnt take long before a string of impressive YouTube highlights of a quick and crafty 5-foot-6 guard from UConn began to circulate. The team sentiment quickly swung from curiosity to shock and excitement. In the team group message we talked like, Are you kidding me, this stud is going to be our coach? senior guard Hannah Schaible said. The stud was 1996 Wade Trophy winner Jennifer Rizzotti, who in April signed on as coach at George Washington after 17 seasons at Hartford, where she won 316 games en route to becoming the winningest coach in America East Conference history. Rizzotti is George Washingtons 10th coach and first female coach since Jennifer Bednarek in the 1988-89 season. For many, Rizzottis departure from Hartford -- which she led to five conference championships and six NCAA tournament appearances -- was received with the same level of shock as that of her newly inherited roster. Rizzotti, 41, had said that few schools could get her to uproot her family, which includes two sons and husband Bill Sullivan, who joins her on the bench in Foggy Bottom as an associate head coach.George Washington, however, was on that selective list, especially after coach Jonathan Tsipis had rebuilt the Colonials in his four seasons there before leaving to coach Wisconsin in March.I wanted to go to a program that was successful, rather than a program that I had to rebuild, so that initially made the job attractive to me -- because the coach was leaving for a bigger job and not leaving because he was fired, Rizzotti said. Theres already an established winning culture here and a foundation of doing things the right way.Geno Auriemma, Rizzottis longtime mentor after playing for him at UConn and then serving as an assistant coach on his gold-medal winning team in the Rio Olympics, has complete confidence in her ability to succeed in her new role. And unlike others, Auriemma said he was not surprised by Rizzottis decision to leave for George Washington.I think there has been opportunities for Jen to move in the past, but for whatever reasons, she didnt think that the time was right, said Auriemma, who added that he and Rizzotti had spoken briefly about the challenges that come with transitioning to another program. There was never a feeling of, I never want to move or Im afraid to move; the timing was never right.I knew that people werent going to stop pursuing Jen, so the fact that she left doesnt surprise me one bit.Rizzotti inherited a George Washington program that has impressed in recent years as it works toward regaining its once consistent NCAA tournament presence under former coach Joe McKeown. Between 1999-2008, George Washington made nine straight NCAA tournament appearances, including consecutive trips to the Sweet 16 in 2007-08. In the past two seasons, George Washington won back-to-back A-10 championships but lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament both times.Rizzotti wont have to rebuild the program, but she will have to retool the roster now that Jonquel Jones, the face of the program the past two seasons, was selected No. 6 overall in the WNBA draft. Helped by Jones 14.6 rebounds per game in an abbreviated season due to injury, George Washington led the nation in rebounding (48.6 per game) in 2015-16. Point guard Lauren Chase, who ranked 15th in the country in assists last season, has also graduated. The Colonials were picked fourth in the A-10 preseason coaches poll. If you ask Rizzotti, however, thats exactly where she wants to be to start her first season in her new home.I kind of had a feeling that we wouldnt be a favorite to win the conference, but we certainly wouldnt be picked 14th, either, Rizzotti said. Thats a pretty good situation to be in your first year.Without Jones, Rizzotti will rely heavily on senior forward Caira Washington, an A-10 preseason first-team selection, in the frontcourt. Along with junior forward Kellie Prange as well as graduate transfer forward Lexi Martins, who led the nation in total rebounds a year ago while at Lehigh, Rizzotti believes the team can remain dominant on the boards. In addition to Washington, the team will also turn to junior guard Brianna Cummings for a breakout season on the wing. A former five-star recruit, the 5-foot-10 Cummings emerged last season as a formidable scorer for the Colonials, demonstrating an ability to both get to the rim and consistently connect from midrange. The big question for the Colonials is at the tip of the backcourt, where Rizzotti will juggle between two inexperienced point guards in sophomore Mei-Lyn Bautista and junior Camila Tapias to run the floor.George Washington is off to a 1-1 start, delivering the first win of the Rizzotti era on Sunday with a 56-45 victory over Princeton. Players like Washington are optimistic about the teams potential.Weve been lucky enough to have a great coaching staff that has come in and changed the program for the better, Washington said. Not every change is bad.Rizzotti admits that she has first-season nerves, a feeling she hasnt had to deal with in almost two decades. And more than anything, Rizzotti has no interest in a new coachs grace period.I want to make it a quick adjustment and a quick transition so what theyre used to -- which is winning -- doesnt go away, she said. I dont want to lose that sensation and that feeling. Yeah, I feel the pressure. Luis Gonzalez Jersey . SEATTLE -- Shortly after sustaining a knee injury in the spring of 2015 that would cost him the season, Washingtons John Ross placed the Rutgers logo on a calendar app on his phone, a countdown to when hed finally get back on the field for the Huskies. His return proved worth the wait.Ross caught two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff for another score, Jake Browning threw for 287 yards, and No. 14 Washington looked every bit a Top 25 team with a 48-13 rout of Rutgers on Saturday.I feel amazing. I feel great. Im so thankful, grateful, everything you can think of, Ross said. Im just so happy to be able to do it again.Entering a season of lofty expectations, the Huskies (1-0) raced to a 24-0 first-quarter lead and were never threatened by the rebuilding Scarlet Knights, in their first game under new coach Chris Ash.Browning threw for 277 yards and all three scores in the first half as the Huskies built a 34-3 lead. Browning should have thrown four TDs in the half, but Darrell Daniels dropped a pass in the end zone late in the second quarter. Its good to get out of the gate fast, especially with so many unknowns, unknown coaches, unknown players on both sides, Washington coach Chris Petersen said.Brownings offseason goal was to be better on deep throws. He was certainly good to start the season, hitting Chico McClatcher on a 43-yard touchdown on his second pass of the season, followed by TD throws of 38 and 50 yards to Ross as the Huskies burned Rutgers decision to play man coverage on the outside.Ross missed the entire 2015 season after injuring a knee during spring camp.It was just really cool to obviously have thrown the ball to him but to see him come into his own after missing all of last season and all the anticipation of him coming back, Browning said of Ross. The Huskies were also dynamic on special teams. Ross took a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and Dante Pettis returned a punt 68 yards for a score in the third quarter. It was the third time in school history Washington had kickoff and punt return touchdowns in the same game, and first since 2001.THE TAKEAWAYRutgers: Ashs rebuilding job at Rutgers (0-1) is significant and it will take a while for the new offensive system to improve. Chris Laviano was 24 of 40 passing for 168 yards in his first game running a spread offense. J. D. Martinez Jersey. Rutgers only TD came on a 10-yard run by Janarion Grant in the fourth quarter against Washingtons backups. There was some good and bad. I thought he probably took too many risks sometimes with the ball, Ash said of Laviano. I thought he did some good things though especially in the second half.Washington: While there were plenty of highlights for the Huskies offense, the run game was absent. Myles Gaskin was held to 57 yards on 15 carries despite Washington spending the majority of the third quarter trying to get the run game established. The Huskies had the luxury to experiment with a 31-point halftime lead.POLL IMPLICATIONSWashington was expected to roll past the Scarlet Knights but such and impressive first half will only go to justify the Huskies preseason ranking. The next two games against Idaho and Portland State arent likely to threaten Washingtons poll positioning so expect them to continue lingering just outside the top 10 for the next few weeks.NUMBER WATCHBrowning threw for more than 300 yards only three times during his freshman season. He nearly had 300 by halftime against Rutgers and if not for the blowout score and the Huskies intent on getting the run game started in the third quarter, Browning would have likely had one of the better passing games of his career. One of Brownings touchdown throws to Ross was a run play that he checked to a pass at the line of scrimmage.Jake made good throws on deep balls early, so we were pleased with that, Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith said.UP NEXTRutgers: The Scarlet Knights get a break facing Howard of the Football Championship Subdivision, the first of three straight home games.Washington: The Huskies meager non-conference schedule continues by hosting Idaho. It will be another chance for the Huskies to give some of its younger players experience before the schedule toughens at the end of September.LAST WORDReally pleased with how fast they started. The first quarter was really, really good on both sides, Washington coach Chris Petersen. Often reticent about getting involved in divisive politics, the sporting world has been on quite an activist roll when it comes to North Carolina. Lou Brock Jersey .It started with the NBA stripping away its lucrative All-Star Game from Charlotte because of a state law that limits protections for LGBT people. The NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference followed suit this week, reclaiming a host of major events including the first and seconds rounds of the mens basketball tournament and the ACC football championship.Theres still room to dole out more financial pain, but that would require NASCAR and golf -- two entities with a hefty stake in the Tar Heel state -- to step up.Not going to happen.NASCAR, which has its headquarters, its hall of fame and one of its biggest races in the Charlotte area, is not the least bit inclined to get involved in the fight over HB2, the so-called bathroom law.Already struggling to fill seats and draw television viewers, the organization is undoubtedly mindful that its conservative fan base wouldnt take kindly to anything that sounds the least bit progressive.Ditto for golf, another sport that its fair to say comes down largely on the right side of the political spectrum. Theres zero chance that next years PGA Championship will be held anywhere other than Charlottes Quail Hollow Club or, looking much further down the road, that the 2024 U.S. Open wont be held at Pinehurst.Lets face it: If youre on a quest for social justice, better look elsewhere.Nothing to see here.NASCAR czar Brian France couldve made quite a splash by threatening to move his companys headquarters to a more-inclusive state or pull the two races held each year at Charlotte Motor Speedway -- one on Memorial Day weekend, the other part of the end-of-the-season playoff.Instead, hes continually talked out of both sides of his mouth, expressing opposition to the law but not doing anything to show hes really displeased. We dont agree with the law, he said again this week. Anything that has a discriminating component to it, we are not in favor of it. I have voiced my views directly to the governor. We are working with the governor to express our disappointment in that bill. But we dont write legislation. We are going to continue to work behind the scenes to express our values and the things that we think are important. The PGA of America sounded a similar theme when asked about holding its 2017 championship in a state that not only requires transgender people to use restrooms that match the gender on their birth certificate, but excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from any sort of statewide antidiscrimination protections. We are trying to do everything we can, as part of our strategic plan for our organization in golf, to make the game as inclusive as possible, said Pete Bevacqua, the PGAs chief executive officer. Were not perfect. Were trying. Not trying hard enough. Then again, when has golf -- or NACAR, for that matter -- ever taken a leading role to make society more inclusive?Golf had a Caucasian-only clause in its rulebook until 1961, kept holding tournaments at private clubs that discriminated against African-Americans and other ethnic and religious groups until the early 1990s, and continues to grapple with the issue of male-only memberships. NASCAR has its roots in the segregationist South and only in recent years took a stand against the Confederate flag.Bevacqua has made it clear that next years PGA Championship will be held at Quail Hollow, no matter what happens with HB2 after the November election.North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, a strong supporter of the law, is running for another term, even while facing condemnation from a broad spectrum that also includes musicians and the businesses community.More troubling, Bevacqua wouldnt even commit to the PGA of American barring another major championship from being awarded to North Carolina if the law remains on the books.Well see how it goes next year, he said recently during this years PGA Championship at Baltusrol. We think its going to be and we know its going to be a wonderful championship when you get to the site and when the best players in the world descend on that golf course and play a golf course that they will never have seen in terms of the changes that have been made.See, it doesnt matter whats going on outside the gates as long as the greens are in tip-top condition.Bevacqua went on to parrot the message that France has been regurgitating over and over again: Hey, theres only so much a multibillion-dollar industry can do, despite all evidence to the contrary. We cant control the policies, the rules and the regulations around the country and municipalities and states, Bevacqua said. We can only do what we can do. And well try to make that PGA Championship -- like we do every PGA Championship -- enjoyable, inclusive, and shine a great light on our organization and the game of golf.Too bad hes not willing to shine that bright light on what matters.---Paul Newberry is a sports columnist for The Associated Press. AMSTERDAM -- Ostracized by many in her native Russia for blowing the whistle on doping practices, Yulia Stepanova finally had a chance to run, in the European championships, but was let down by her body. She pulled up in her 800-meter heat when she tore a ligament in her right foot, further endangering her chances of taking part in the Rio Games. While I was running there was a snap that I heard and I could not understand what happened, she said through a translator. It happened some 200 meters from the finish but by then she was already in last place in her heat, where she had been since the start. She limped to the line, bent on finishing her race, but it was another setback among many that have turned her career from a promising middle distance runner into an athlete primarily known for what she did off the track.Stepanova is half of the husband-and-wife team that has blown a Russian doping scandal wide open. Her husband is Vitaly Stepanov, a former Russian anti-doping official and between them, they were able to gather a trove of evidence on how doping has worked in Russia.Stepanov provided information on the manipulation of samples to ensure Russias sports stars didnt fail doping tests, while his wife shot undercover footage of athletes and coaches apparently discussing how to dope. That evidence was crucial to a documentary broadcast in Germany in December, which in turn sparked a World Anti-Doping Agency inquiry and subsequent damning report. The pressure was very hard, I had a lot of people who did not believe me, she said. Ruussia still does not believe this. Cheap Air Jordan 2 Retro. Before the race, other athletes had already come over to congratulate her for being a lynchpin in exposing the scandal. When I was sitting in the changing room, all the girls from the direct opposition I had today came up to me and said thank you for what youve done, she said.In Amsterdam, she was competing as a neutral athlete under a special exemption since her nation is barred from competing because of the doping scandal.Even if the IAAF world athletics federation allowed her to compete and the Europeans welcomed her, it is still unclear how and if she will compete in Rio.The injury did not improve her chances.First of all I don t know yet whether I will be at the Olympics, she said in the bowels of the Amsterdam Olympic stadium, sitting on a chair for comfort.Secondly I have to see how my injury improves.Stepanova said she came into Wednesdays race with a painful inflammation in her foot, and her lack of form showed. She had come from North America only days before her race and the jetlag showed.Stepanova is the only Russian at the European championships running under such a special neutral flag exemption.Im very happy to have been able to compete here, she said.On the first day of the championships, Yasemin Can of Turkey won the first gold, when she tore away from the pack early on and took the 10,000 meter title well ahead of Dulce Felix of Portugal. Whistleblower Yulia Stepanovas hopes of competing in the Summer Olympics are all but over. Cheap Air Jordan 20 Retro . Her fight to expose doping and corruption is not.Its OK to lose a good fight, Stepanovas husband, Vitaly Stepanov, told The Associated Press on Monday. They have appealed to the International Olympic Committee to reverse its decision, handed down Sunday, that denies Stepanova a chance at competing in the Rio Games, which begin Aug. 5. The decision, the Stepanovs claim, is based on incorrect information, including the IOCs framing of Stepanovas decision to become a whistleblower as a too-little-too-late desperation play made after the Russian team had cast her aside. Its a conclusion that both the World Anti-Doping Agency and tracks governing body, the IAAF, disagree with; both recommended Stepanova be allowed to compete in Rio.But Stepanov said he received several signals that the IOC would not go along, beginning with a general lack of interest from the key decision makers. He said that during the push for Olympic eligibility, he spoke with two separate IOC officials for a total of 90 minutes.I think what the IOC didnt do is spend enough time to understand how big the problem is in Russia and how much covering up is happening in Russian sports, he said.Stepanova was the 800-meter runner who was entrenched in the Russian doping system but later came forward with details about the cheating. That triggered investigations that led to the banning of the Russian track team from the Olympics. After receiving more information about Russian sports as a whole, the IOC opted against a ban of the entire Russian team.Part of that decision included a ruling that any Russian with a previous doping ban would not be allowed in Rio. That includes Stepanova, though the legality of that ruling is in question: In 2011, the Court of Arbitration for Sport invalidated the IOCs Rule 45, which called for Olympic bans for any athlete whod served more than a six-month doping penalty. CAS said it amounted to double jeopardy. It was one of several facets from the decision handed down Sunday that indicated the difficulty the IOC had in finding the right balance between, as president Thomas Bach called it, individual justice and collective responsibility. There also were political concerns; a Russian official addressed the IOC executive board and told members not to cave into geopolitical pressure. While Russia largely welcomed the decision, it was roundly criticized by those in the anti-doping world. The move to ban Stepanova was widely viewed as the worst part of the judgment. The decision to refuse her entry in to the Games is incomprehensible and will undoubtedly deter whistleblowers in the future from coming forward, said Travis Tygart, CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.Stepanov said his wife got a bout of the stomach flu on Sunday -- making a bad day that much worse. She was training for the Olympics, knowing that if she made it, she would not compete for a medal, the way she had in the past. Her goal is to participate, Stepanov said. In my view, she deserved to be an Olympian a lot more than when she was a doped athlete. But the odds are against her.Stepanov said there is no money to fund an appeal to CAS, which would have the last say on her possible ban.Sunday was a day to cry a little, to get disappointed, Stepanov said. But todays Monday. We feel were trying to fight for the right thing, so we wake up and start fighting again. PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers?placed tight end Ladarius Green on the regular-season physically unable to perform list Tuesday, meaning the teams biggest offseason signing wont see the field until late October at the earliest. Adam Jones Jersey .Green is ineligible to practice or join the active roster until after Week 6 of the regular season. After that he has a five-week window to practice. Once he officially practices, the team has 21 days to activate him or place him on injured reserve. This move isnt surprising, considering Green hasnt practiced all preseason since undergoing ankle surgery, but it amplifies the complications with signing Green to a four-year, $20 million contract in March.Green underwent the surgery before the signing, and the NFL Network reported earlier this month that Green, who had multiple concussions with the San Diego Chargers, was suffering from recurring headaches. The Steelers have maintained Green was on the preseason PUP list solely for the ankle injury.Green recently moved forward in his rehab to pool work and jumping, but joining the team never seemed imminent. The Steelers will start second-year tight end Jesse James, who caught four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown in Fridays preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. LOS ANGELES -- Nneka Ogwumike grew up as part of a dazzling hoops sister act with her sibling, Chiney. But since coming to the Sparks, her pairing with Candace Parker has helped Ogwumike win the leagues MVP award and has Los Angeles a victory away from a WNBA title. Its like I have another sister now, Ogwumike said after the Sparks 92-75 victory over Minnesota on Friday in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. Ive learned so much from her, and I think shes learned from me.We play through our mistakes together, were always communicating, were switching people on defense. Were that voice in each others head that really gets us going. Thats the relationship weve developed.Ogwumike actually has three younger sisters, including Connecticut Sun star and former Stanford teammate Chiney, but Parker has been like her older sister. Since Ogwumike was drafted No. 1 by the Sparks in 2012 -- Parker was the top pick in 2008 -- weve watched this duo develop. Friday was an exceptional showcase of just how much this tandem means to the Sparks. In a game in which the Sparks aggression and energy were exactly what they hoped for, the table was set for Parker and Ogwumike to feast. Parker had 24 points and nine rebounds, Ogwumike 21 and nine. They were a combined 19-of-33 from the field and helped Los Angeles win the board battle 29-24 for just the second time in the teams six meetings this season.Theyre our team, said Sparks guard Alana Beard of the post duo, although she had a heck of a game herself with 15 points and a game-high seven assists. Theyre two different players who make each other better. I think Game 2 was a prime example of what happens when they dont play in sync. And tonight was an example of when they do.Nneka does all the little things, and Candace is one of the best all-around players in the game. So it works. It sure did Friday, and the Lynx were not able to do much to stop it.Its absolutely all on the want-to of Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker to start the game, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. And then [Essence] Carson and Beard throughout the game. Their want-to was on 10, which is exactly where you would expect it to be.They won the persistency battle. We didnt rise to the occasion. We were soft. Did I see that coming? Absolutely not. It was disappointing, to say the least.Parker and Ogwumike are such a 1-2 punch, though, that they can knock the stuffing out of other teams. Even a team with three championships like Minnesota. The Sparks havent won a WNBA title since 2002; Parker was 16 years old then and Ogwumike 12. Parker won two NCAA titles while at Tennessee; Ogwumike led Stanford to the Final Four each of her four seasons but didnt win a championship.Once they were together with the Sparks, they knew they could help each other to a title. But it would take collaboration and flexibility from both. Parker, as great a player as sshe is, can get lost in her own ruminating sometimes and tend toward pessimism. George Iloka Jersey. Ogwumike, by contrast, could be president for life of the look on the sunny side club. They balance each other really well, Beard said. Nneka is the one whos always going to be optimistic in everything. Candace is more of a thinker who will analyze everything.Parkers analysis of her own performance in the first two games of this series was pull-no-punches brutal.I was nonexistent until this game, Parker said. Even the first game, we squeaked it out with Alanas buzzer-beater, but I wasnt effective.Thats harsh. Parker had 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists in the Sparks 78-76 victory in Game 1. But she was disappointed that she didnt have more of an impact in the fourth quarter. And disappointed doesnt even begin to describe her evaluation of her 3-of-12 struggle for six points, with four rebounds, in Tuesdays 79-60 loss.I had to look myself in the mirror; thats not what I want to give, Parker said. I still need to be aggressive for my team, even when things arent going my way. My teammates told me, and my coach told me.Thats where I think this team is special: Were able to be honest with each other because we know its coming from a good place.Parker said the bond she has with Ogwumike was particularly strengthened by the difficulties the team went through in 2014, when coach Carol Ross was fired in late July after 22 games, and general manager Penny Toler took over on the sidelines. Los Angeles finished 16-18 and got swept in the Western Conference semifinals by eventual champion Phoenix. The Sparks had been expecting so much more that season, and it was crushing to them to have not come closer to reaching their potential. Brian Agler took over as coach for 2015, and Parker sat out the first part of the season to rest. But once she returned, things really began to click. The Sparks lost 2-1 in the conference semifinals to Minnesota last year, but the seeds were sown for this season when they went 26-8 and had the second-best record behind the Lynx.Ogwumike had the best season of her young career and won the MVP award. Her rise to the most elite level of the WNBA didnt stir any sibling rivalry with Parker, a two-time MVP herself. In fact, no one was happier than Parker, who says of Ogwumikes zest for playing, I really respect her. That girl never stops. As Beard said, Parker and Ogwumike have cultivated some of their own best qualities in each other.I definitely feel I am a little more fierce now because of her, Ogwumike said. And I think my looking at the bright side of things ... is something that I hope has rubbed off on her. When we tap into those things, on and off the court, its really awesome. Masterson took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, Michael Brantley hit a bases-loaded triple and the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Masterson (11-7) had faced the minimum through six, allowing only a hit batter, when Brian Dozier led off the seventh with a broken-bat blooper to centre field that dunked in under the glove of a sliding Drew Stubbs for a double. That not only ended Mastersons attempt at making history, it briefly halted what had been a quick, decisive trip through the Twins lineup. Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana immediately went to the mound to check on the big right-hander. "He said, Maybe we should have started him off with a slider. I said, No, we wanted to challenge guys," Masterson said. "Thats what we do. I dont care if we have no hits or 100 hits, you still have to challenge guys. "Broken bat? Thats what you want. It falls in, but in my mind I get so many balls put in play Im like, somethings going to happen. Theres going to be a hit sometime. So lets just make sure when it does happen, we stay in our game and make sure it doesnt have a trickle-down effect," he added. Besides, by then the Indians were leading 6-0. "I thought what he did was good enough," manager Terry Francona said. The Indians led 3-0 on Mike Aviles sacrifice fly and two-run homer by Jason Kipnis when they loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on a walk to Kipnis and consecutive singles by Nick Swisher and Carlos Santana off starter Scott Diamond (5-9). With right-hander Anthony Swarzak warming in the bullpen, acting manager Terry Steinbach -- in charge because Ron Gardenhire had the flu -- visited Diamond on the mound. Diamond got Mark Reynolds to pop out to first for the second out, but Brantley hit a liner to the wall in right-centre for a standup triple that cleared the bases and ended Diamonds day. The Indians hit Diamond hard even when making outs -- 11 of the balls they put in play were solid line drives. That included Kipnis homer, which bounced off the top of the wall in left for his second opposite-field shot in two days. "My stuff was really bad," Diamond said. "I think I tried to overdo some things, and that kind of led to what happpened. Chris Owings Jersey. " Diamond, the Twins best starter last season as a rookie (12-9, 3.59 ERA), gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits and three walks as the left-hander lost his third straight decision. He hasnt won since beating the Chicago White Sox on June 20, and his ERA rose to 5.53. "It seemed like Is throw one pitch and not be able to come back with the next one," Diamond said. "It was just a matter of trying to focus and not overthink things. I just battled myself the whole time." The Twins scored when Dozier came in from third on Joe Mauers one-out grounder to second that was bobbled by Kipnis for an error, his second in two days. But the first-time All-Star also homered for the second time in two days. "When he hits the ball the other way hes getting rewarded for it and its creating a ton of confidence -- and it should," Francona said. "Right now hes keeping everything fair and hitting everything with authority, and thats a good recipe for success." Masterson, who hadnt pitched since a no-decision against Toronto on July 10, finished the seventh before being pulled after 91 pitches for right-hander C.C. Lee. Masterson, also selected to his first All-Star team this year, was charged with an earned run on one hit and struck out eight in his first victory since June 30 against the White Sox. He lowered his ERA to 3.60 with his 13th quality start of the season. Masterson plunked Aaron Hicks in the elbow in the third inning, but Hicks was thrown out attempting to steal for the second out and Pedro Florimon grounded out to end the inning. That was as much as the Twins could muster against Masterson until the seventh, when Dozier looped the first pitch into shallow centre. NOTES: Indians RHP Corey Kluber could have his next start pushed back a day after leaving Saturday nights 3-2 loss after five innings because of a hip injury. Kluber said Sunday his left hamstring tightened up on him during the game and was sore, but he didnt anticipate missing his next scheduled bullpen session Monday. ... Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe has struck out six straight times -- and he fanned seven times in the series. A fundraising campaign set up for jockey Freddy Tylicki is closing in on ￡200,000 in donations in less than 48 hours. Jeremy Lane Jersey .Tylicki has been told by doctors he has a T7 paralysis, meaning he has movement in the upper half of his body but not the lower, after he sustained spinal injuries in a fall at Kempton on Monday.Matt Chapman, a presenter for At The Races TV, set up a GoFundMe page for Tylicki and has been thrilled by the level of support, with various bookmakers all promising a further ￡10,000 donation each.Racing figures such as Tylickis former boss Richard Fahey, Luca Cumani, Bill Gredley, Sheikh Fahad Al Thani and champion jockey Jim Crowley, who was also involved in the Kempton incident but escaped with a broken nose, have all donated.Speaking from California where he has been working at the Breeders Cup, Chapman said: The response has been overwhelming.I originally set a target of ￡20,000, not really knowing what to put as I was very conscious that we met the target. My hope was that by starting something straight away, people put their hands in their pockets.[Owner] Bill Gredley was amazing, he put a big donation in, as did Sheikh Fahad and Andrea Atzeni, but what is just as crucial are the smaller donations. One person donating ￡100,000 is the same as 100,000 people donating ￡1. It all adds up.The heartbreaking thing about Freddys situation is that he had just made the breakthrough into the big time.Hes not a young lad [at 30], hes had to work his way to the top, but it finally looked like he was where he wanted to be.From that point of view its so annoying and I think that is why its touched so many people, that and the fact he was so well liked, everybody loves being in his company.Leading jockey Frankie Dettori was quick to mention Tylicki following his Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf success on Queens Trust at Santa Anita on Saturday evening, and has urged the rider to keep fighting as he continues his recovery process. In the immediate aftermath of the race I had plenty of time to reflect on my good fortune as the postrace formalities seemed to take a little longer than usual. I began to think of my mate back home, Freddy Tylicki, and how fickle this game can be, Dettori wrote in his blog.Although Breeders Cup wins are amongst the most coveted prizes in the sport, Id have gladly swapped them all to have heard that things werent as bad as they seem to be for Freddy. Im reminded again how cruel this job can be and Freddys news has really shaken me.The weighing room is ferociously competitive and I love that sense of battle, but its also where my best mates are too, so when the chips are down for one of our own, we rally round in the best possible way.The way racing is coming together to support Freddy is inspiring. On the biggest stages, like Santa Anita, weve still got to get our priorities right. My Breeders Cup win was for Freddy. Keep fighting mate.
