Arpels Manager Was Slain in Belief He Was Gunman

The manager of a Beverly Hills jewelry store was shot and killed by a sheriff's sharpshooter after a 13 1/2 hour hostage siege because he was mistaken for the fleeing gunman, Sheriff Sherman Block said Wednesday.

"It was not an accidental shooting," Block told a press conference. "The person who was shot was, in fact, the person he had fired at. . . . It was a tragic end a mistake."

Deputy George Johnson, van cleef flower fake necklace, a 13 year veteran, fired a single rifle shot from his rooftop perch, about 100 yards from the store parking lot that was the shooting scene, after a spotter, Deputy Jon Rhodes, who was positioned next to him, reported, " 'He has a gun. He's going to shoot,' " Block said.

Hugh Skinner, 64, the longtime manager of the Van Cleef Arpels store, was one of three hostages killed in the bloody siege. The bodies of two other employees saleswoman Ann Heilperin and security guard William Richard Smith were found inside the store, apparently executed by the robber.

Suspect Steven Livaditis, 22,van cleef clover fake necklace, was feigning death when he was arrested immediately after the shooting, Block said. A fully loaded, high caliber revolver was hidden under his body.

Block said that in the hours before the standoff ended, he and Beverly Hills Police Chief Marvin Iannone discussed a number of options that officers might take including surreptitiously entering the building, if it was learned that any of the hostages had been harmed.

The suspect had indicated by telephone several times during the day that he had killed one or two of his captives, claims that were confirmed by hostages Heilperin and Skinner in phone conversations with reporters.

"In other conversations, he denied having killed a hostage," Block said. "We were fairly certain in believing the killing had not occurred. . . .

Block said the gunman and the hostages were covered by a dark drape as they left the store. Officers stationed outside could see only the legs of three men and a woman underneath. Two of the men were wearing dark pants and the third wore gray pants. The sheriff said that the man, Skinner, fell to the ground, then raised himself into a sitting position and extended his arm toward the group huddled under the blanket. (When asked by reporters if Livaditis might have changed clothes with Skinner, Block replied that it was a possibility that was under investigation.)

It was at that moment, Block said, that the spotter issued his warning about a gun. Johnson fired his rifle once, the bullet hitting Skinner in the chest.

"It was a clear shot," Block said.

Night Scopes Used

The sheriff said deputies used night scopes and had a clear view of the parking lot area, which was illuminated.

Deputies rushed forward to find three people tightly tied together under the blanket. Livaditis was one of them. He was lying face down. In order to separate him from the two surviving hostages, deputies had to cut away their bindings. Skinner had not been bound to the others.

Rhodes, 32, an eight year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, later told investigators that he saw a shiny object when Skinner raised his hand, Block said.

"Whether it was light reflected, who knows?" the sheriff said. "A ring, van cleef replica butterfly necklace, a watch? I have no idea at that distance. He had car keys."

Block speculated that Skinner had not been bound to the others and carried keys because he was to drive the getaway car. Livaditis and his captives were headed toward a car in a nearby parking lot.

"Perhaps it was planned that he might mistakenly be seen as the suspect," Block also theorized. Johnson, 42, and Rhodes, like other deputies involved in fatal shootings, will be off field duty for the next five days and will undergo psychological counseling.

Backed by Sheriff

Block was not critical of their conduct, van cleef knock off alhambra necklace, adding that Johnson a member of the special weapons team for more than three years and a highly trained marksman was "absolutely" justified in taking his shot.

Love affair with fireplace cools with health concerns

The apartment which is, in fact, being considered for an issue of Elle Decor has maple floors, casement windows and all the character one would expect to find in a building that was once a factory.

But one of the features that many people in the city would pay a premium for is something the owners don like: the fireplace.

wood burning fire in the city is a ridiculous luxury we would never have put it in ourselves, said Arpels, grandson of one of the founders of Van Cleef Arpels and the former managing partner of Netto Collection, a baby furniture company bought by Maclaren. the city, it doesn make sense to burn fires, because it inefficient and it polluting. Among those who aspire to be environmentally responsible, it is joining the ranks of bottled water and big houses.

smoke from a fire smells very nice, said Diane Bailey, a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council in San Francisco. it can cause a lot of harm. The tiny particles, she said, cause inflammation and illness, and can cross into the bloodstream, triggering heart attacks as well as worsening other conditions.

Or as Starre Vartan, a 33 year old blogger who goes by the name Eco Chick, put it: time you are burning wood or cow dung, you be creating pollution. It like junk food: If you do it once a month, then who cares? But if it something you do every day, it important that you mitigate it somehow. It a hazard. surprisingly, the green community has been sounding the alarm for some time.

Wood smoke contains some of the same particulates as cigarette smoke, said Dr. Norman H. Edelman, the chief medical officer for the American Lung Association, as well as known carcinogens like aldehydes; it has also been linked to respiratory problems in young children. now know from lots of studies that wood smoke is very, very irritating, Edelman said. contains a lot of irritating gases and it also contains damaging particulate matter. It probably not good for anybody, and it especially bad for anybody who has a chronic respiratory problem. So the association strongly advises people not to use the traditional fireplace, he said.

Certainly, there are many who consider this eco overkill. After all, in Greek mythology, fire was a gift from the divine, stolen from Zeus by Prometheus and handed over to shivering humanity. What could be more natural than sitting around a crackling fire on a winter night, at a campsite in the Berkshires or in a Brooklyn brownstone?

But growing concerns about the air pollution and health problems caused by smoke from wood burning fires are prompting a number of areas across the country to pass laws regulating them, van cleef arpels alhambra copy necklace.

lot of municipalities are taking action, said Bailey, adding that the weather based measures called burn bans are perhaps the most widespread restriction. These measures can be mandatory or voluntary, van cleef alhambra replica necklace, and can become more restrictive as air quality declines.

So far, most of the wood burning regulations tend to be out West. A few examples: Idaho offers tax incentives to people who replace uncertified wood stoves with ones; San Joaquin County in California forbids selling a home unless its wood stove is replaced with an EPA certified one; and Palo Alto and other municipalities in California prohibit wood burning fireplaces or stoves in new construction.

Perhaps not coincidentally, sales of wood burning appliances dropped to 235,000 in 2009 from 800,000 in 1999, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association. And the Brick Industry Association, which promotes brick construction, reports that roughly 35,000 masonry fireplaces were installed in the United States in 2009, compared to 80,000 in 2005.

Certainly those numbers reflect the economic slowdown, but they may also be affected by growing ambivalence to wood burning fires. In any case, most fireplaces are used far too infrequently to cause any real damage to the environment, said Stephen Sears, the vice president of marketing and member services for the Brick Industry Association, voicing an opinion shared by some.

In the East, van cleef and arpels butterfly knock off necklace, he wrote in an e mail, air pollution is worst in the summer, when fireplaces aren in use, and in the West the regulations are an overreaction: it is not realistic to test each unique masonry fireplace in a laboratory to evaluate its emissions, he noted, is easier for some municipalities to arbitrarily limit the use of all wood burning fireplaces.

Karen Soucy, an associate publisher at a nonprofit environmental magazine, isn swayed by that argument. She refuses to enter a home where wood has been burned, even infrequently.

Soucy, 46, blames fumes from a wood fire for sending her to the emergency room 25 years ago with a severe asthma attack. She had been staying at a friend house in Stowe, Vt., for about a day, she said, when her lungs seized up. She was taken to a hospital in an ambulance, and got two shots of adrenalin; the doctors blamed her friend cat.

was only later, working with a team of allergy doctors and pulmonologists, did we determine the culprit to be the wood burning fumes from the various fireplaces, Soucy said.

Now her husband scouts out any place they go in advance, to be sure it free of fireplaces, and she passes up countless dinners and parties. the one who feels guilty for always being the one to decline invitations or for making people go out of their way to clean their home and I still decline, she said. smell lingers on everything. The surrounding countryside is filled with downed trees that would decompose anyway, Brown, 38, said, and Arpels, 41, gets some exercise from splitting the logs.

we not transporting things using oil from across the world to our house, she added. think this is pretty good, environmentally. Guests sometimes ask her if she feels guilty about burning wood, she said, but she recites a laundry list of the stove high efficiency features, explaining to them that the environmental impact is negligible due to the combustor, and that she mainly uses fallen wood cleared from her land or other properties nearby.

Of course, not everyone can afford such a stove, which can cost upward of $2,000, including installation (Boyle paid $3,000 for hers).

Converting a wood burning fireplace to gas can be just as expensive, and while electric fireboxes are cheaper just a few hundred dollars most consider them a poor substitute for a real fire, since there is no flame. So some people are simply using their fireplaces less often or not at all.

in the Appalachian Mountains, and I know what pollution does to us all, Treadwell said. very definitely limit fires. And the firewood for sale at the corner bodega or even the wood supplied by a delivery service might not be seasoned, van cleef arpels fake alhambra necklace, even if it is advertised as such, said David R. Brown, a public health toxicologist in Connecticut. To ensure that the wood is dry, he added, it should be stored for at least six months before being burned.

There is also the fire building technique to consider. Most people don realize that the fire should be kept hot (with high, visible flames) for the first 20 minutes, David R. Brown said, so that the chimney will heat up and the smoke will disperse; otherwise, the smoke tends to drift into the house, causing an increased health hazard.

Hutchinson leads Quantum Racing to comeback win at Key West Race Week

Tactician Terry Hutchinson said he took a long look in the mirror after Quantum Racing struggled on moving day at Quantum Key West Race Week.

Quantum Racing posted a subpar score line of 8 7 9 on Wednesday and dropped to sixth place in the highly competitive TP52 class. The Annapolis based professional faulted himself for making a series of poor tactical calls, apologized to teammates and vowed to do better the rest of the way.

Hutchinson was true to his word and Quantum closed the five day regatta with two bullets and a second place finish to complete an impressive comeback during the first stop on the 52 Super Series. Skipper Doug DeVos steered, Bora Gulari served as strategist and Ian Moore was the navigator as Quantum Racing won Race 10 on Friday and finished with a low score of 43 points, six better than runner up Platoon.

"(Wednesday) was a rough day, yet so much of it was self imposed. We piled up 24 points in one day and all three results were because of tactical blunders," Hutchinson said Thursday after Quantum posted a first and a second to get back into contention. "We had a great chat as a team on the way in and I said to the group in our debrief that really the only person I've got to blame was in the mirror. It was no more complicated than getting my stuff together."

Arnold professional Greg Gendell worked the foredeck aboard Quantum Racing, the three time 52 Super Series champions. Hutchinson said winning Key West Race Week to start the 2017 season was rewarding since the competition was so stiff. Platoon (Harm Muller Spreer, Germany), Provezza IX (V. Ergin Imre, United Kingdom) and Azzurra (Alberto and Pablo Roemmers, Argentina) all led the regatta at some point.

"Five boats could have won the regatta going into the final day, which is really amazing," Hutchinson said. "We are over the top happy about this victory because the competition was so stiff and we had a lot of things go against us. It was a real testament to the quality of our team that we responded to adversity."

Gendell has been on the bow for Quantum Racing ever since the TP52 program was launched and probably does not get enough credit for his contributions, Hutchinson said.

"Greg is, without question, one of the best in the business. He is Mr. Consistency," Hutchinson said. Furgurson III)

Hutchinson and Gendell were among several Annapolis sailors and boats that performed well at Quantum Key West Race Week, which celebrated its 30th anniversary. A fleet of 96 boats in nine classes competed in the regatta, organized for the second year by the Storm Trysail Club.

Jahn Tihansky was helmsman onboard Hogfish Racing, van cleef fake alhambra necklace, which topped the Flying Tiger 7.5 class in dominant fashion. Andrew Kerr called tactics for Tihansky, who steered Hogfish to first place in seven of nine races.

It marked the seventh straight year that Kerr and Tihansky have teamed up to lead a crew comprised of sailors who chartered a boat for Key West Race Week. In previous years, van cleef arpel knock off necklace, they sailed in the J/80 class using a J/World Annapolis boat.

"I'm no longer a legitimate boat owner, so we had to find another charter option, van cleef arpels alhambra copy necklace," said Tihansky, who sold the J/World Annapolis franchise after many years of ownership.

National One Design Sailing Academy, located in Ontario, provided the fleet of seven Flying Tiger 7.5 meter boats. Nigel Brownett, of Long Beach, California, chartered Hogfish Racing and thus served as skipper.

Brian Tyrell, a successful Melges 24 sailor from Benton City, Washington, van cleef necklace fake wholesale, also put together a strong team and gave Hogfish Racing plenty of competition. Most of the other boats were crewed by sailing school students with a coach onboard.

"We were happy to have won, but the truth is that we didn't do anything spectacular," said Tihansky, head coach of the Naval Academy varsity offshore sailing team. "It was fun to keep the band together for another year. Andrew and I have been sailing with Nigel for many years, and we've really enjoyed doing Key West."

Annapolis resident Sandy Askew skippered Flying Jenny to a runner up finish in C 30 class, which drew five entries. Tactician Arnis Baltins, main trimmer Grant "Fuzz" Spanhake, headsail trimmer Jason Currie and mast man Brady Stagg were among the Annapolitans in the crew.

Askew took delivery of her C 30 in April 2016 and did Race Week at Newport and the Annapolis Fall Regatta. Renowned rigger Will Van Cleef, a former Annapolis resident, performed considerable work to get the boat into top shape. Snider Marina in Detroit, has been sailing in some capacity all her life and has owned previous editions of Flying Jenny race boats with her husband David. Gary Snider steers this Flying Jenny for his sister, who thought the team showed vast improvement in Key West.

"We have come a long way with our boat handling, which is crucial in this class. You can lose a lot of boat lengths in a hurry by making even the slightest mistake," Askew said. "For the most part, we had good sets and good gybes."

Extreme2, owned by Dan Cheresh, of Saugatuck, Michigan, won nine of 12 races to capture C 30 class with a low score of 21 points. Flying Jenny won the last race and also counted six second or third place results in finishing 13 points behind.

"It's almost mind boggling how well Dan Cheresh and his crew sail the boat," Askew said. "We are going to keep learning, keep improving and keep fighting until we find a way to beat them."

Velocity, owned by Annapolis Yacht Club member Martin Roesch, placed third in the J/111 one design class. Annapolis pro Geoff Ewenson called tactics while several other locals were part of the crew on Velocity, which won a race and placed second in three others.

Former Annapolis resident Alec Cutler placed ninth in J/70 class, by far the largest of the regatta with 42 boats. Veteran Maryland sailmaker Max Skelley trimmed the headsails for Cutler, a Naval Academy graduate who now lives in Bermuda.

Bargains abound in Palm Beach

PALM BEACH, Fla. On the sunny island of Palm Beach, black tie galas are common, Sunday brunch is $100 and a beachside hotel room can cost more than $2,000 a night in high season. But there are bargains to be found. The snowbird's paradise has a thriving high end consignment market for designer and often barely worn castoffs.

The island's busy society calendar means twice daily costume changes in a land of labels that include Chanel, Hermes, Valentino, Gucci and Prada. Many of these garments and accessories make their way to a handful of exclusive consignment boutiques and a few even trickle down to bargain thrift shops.

"They sometimes don't even wear it. They're shopping constantly. If it's last season they can't wear it anymore. And they wear it all just once, including the shoes and the handbag," says Monique Javarone, owner of Fashionista Palm Beach, an upscale boutique that specializes in vintage.

Often store owners go to multi million dollar estates and sort through racks of designer clothing for clients who don't want the stigma of being seen in a consignment store or who have too much to transport.

"It's wonderful here.

"The thing that everybody wants year after year is Chanel. It's still the No. 1 consignment handbag. Even the shoes are still No. 1 . it's that very classic, never go out of style look," said Sean Connolly, owner of the Paradise Lost boutiques.

At Encore Plus Boutique in Boca Raton, Ayla Habibi said Chanel purses are also her No. 1 seller and range from $800 to $4,700 (sold new, the purses can exceed $5,000). Handbags are the most popular items at most of the stores, where Hermes and Louis Vuitton are close seconds.

"The Chanel and Hermes fly out the door," said Lisa Stark, owner of Serendipity in Boca Raton, who also posts items on Instagram. "As soon as we post things, the phone starts ringing."

When she first started more than a decade ago, the in demand items were ball gowns and St. John, a luxury knitwear brand, but now she says women dress more casually.

The Palm Beach hand me downs are so good that fashionistas from all over the world vie for them online. A handful of the stores have started selling their items at upscale web retailers like 1stdibs.

"Half of what we sell goes overseas," said Javarone, who says hers online business has doubled in recent years.

Many customers seek out the store after first seeing her items online.

If the upscale boutiques aren't interested, the clothes and accessories may make their way to some of the area's thrift shops. The thrift stores are also a good spot for lower end designers like Tory Burch, Lilly Pulitzer and Milly.

"We do get Hermes from time to time, men's ties, scarves, pocket squares," said Goodwill Embassy Boutique assistance store manager Becky Shore. The store recently had Christian Dior china and sold a slightly chipped Baccarat crystal horse for $199. She says it's not uncommon to get a collection of the same designer all at once from an estate, like a collection of Judith Leiber bags.

The deals are so good even the rich aren't passing them up. Many of the socialites who come in to consign items, van cleef magic alhambra earrings replica, often leave with a purchase.

"They buy the same things (they sell)," said Connolly. "They bring in Hermes scarves, they'll consign two or three at a time and they'll walk out with one."

Where to shop for Palm Beach consignment, thrift bargains

From Chanel jackets to Birkin bags and Lilly Pulitzer, consignment stores and even bargain thrift shops in the Palm Beach, replica van cleef clover earrings, Florida, area, have all the labels you love. Here's a guide. FASHIONISTA PALM BEACH, 298 S. County Road, Palm Beach

The exquisite 1980s floor length sequined white and black Chanel dress that greets visitors at this Palm Beach gem says it all. The store specializes in high end women's vintage. It's a must for fashion lovers, even if you aren't looking to buy. Recent finds: an Armani black mink coat with fox collar, $20,000, and an Oscar de la Renta silk strapless lace gown, $3,000.

The store has a large collection of Hermes Birkins and designer shoes, plus fun accessories like black Chanel kidskin gloves adorned with pink stingray designs for $975, a $600 Alexander McQueen lacy knitted dress and a $650 Chanel slip dress.

CLASSIC COLLECTIONS, 118 N. County Road, Palm Beach

This store recently added an entire room for Chanel, including signature jackets for around $1,250, plus shoes, bags and jewelry. Recent finds included a wide selection of purses (including four Birkins); gowns by Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera; plus vintage Krizia and Mary McFadden.

Fine and costume jewelry, including Tiffany, Cartier and Chopard, set the store apart. South Sea baroque pearls were $11,900,van cleef mother of pearl earrings replica, a Van Cleef Arpels diamond and gold necklace was $31,995 and a Charles Krypell diamond ring was $6,995. There's wiggle room to negotiate higher end jewelry prices.

PARADISE LOST,van cleef alhambra earrings replica, 227 Sunrise Ave., Palm Beach

Paradise Lost has three charming stores within walking distance. The high end boutique carries labels like Chanel, Hermes and Valentino plus rare items like a Louis Vuitton tennis racket cover and a red suede Cartier train case. Recent finds included Chanel shoes around $299, a Hermes silk blouse, $499, and a short Missoni dress, $399, plus lots of St. John and several stunning, reasonably priced evening wear options, including a gold beaded floor length Escada dress for $699. At the lower end boutique, Lilly Pulitzer sweaters were $30 to $70. A furniture and home goods store has tons of Louis Vuitton luggage and unique estate pieces like Mizner chandeliers.

Should I disenchant my golden Edwin Vancleef

Anyways when I use my oil rogue Edwin rarely gets put into good use. Should I disenchant him and just put an arcane golem or shredder in his place and use that 1600 dust for another legendary, replica van cleef onyx earrings? I thinking of Leeroy for that firepower on my face hunter. If not what other legendaries would be worth the craft in the current meta (Dr. It possible that the Miracle Rogue resurgence will bring him a little attention.

That being said, my rule for disenchanting gold legendaries is to only do it when it an utterly useless one, replica van cleef arpel earrings, or if I have another one that I really want to trade it for. It sounds like there are a lot of good ones you don have. Dr. Boom is still probably the most bang for your dust, but Alexstrasza and Ysera are really good for control. Not to mention certain powerhouse class legends like Tirion or Antonidas.

I would personally keep it until I found a legend that I must have for a certain deck, replica van cleef & arpels earrings, but if you do disenchant it, Leeroy is probably not your best bet. He sees only a little more play than Van Cleef. You simply don need him as a finisher in Face Hunter since Arcane Golem is a thing.
