A Sweet Old Family Recipe
Its blue windmills swirled like giant propellers over a chain of bakeries, coffee shops and a drive in as the sweet aroma of freshly baked pastries wafted over the city. For more than three quarters of a century, Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakery fused Old World recipes with New World commerce, helping to create the neighborhood known as the city's breadbasket.
All that remains of the giant landmark in Glassell Park are its quaint two story facade and two smaller buildings, squeezed between the Glendale Freeway and Metrolink tracks. Built in 1931 to evoke a gargantuan 16th century Dutch town house, the facade stands as a tribute to pioneers in the Southern California food industry. City Councilman Tom LaBonge, a lifelong Silver Lake resident. He remembers tagging along with his older brother to watch fresh bread roll out of the oven and off the assembly line in the 1960s.
"Next to Van de Kamp's [plant] there was also a drive in restaurant with a big windmill, used as a meeting place by all the big guys from Franklin, John Marshall and Eagle Rock highs," LaBonge said. "They would street race on Riverside Drive. But I only watched. I didn't race, nor did my brother."
LaBonge remembers inhaling the comforting aromas of Van de Kamp's bear claws and other sweets: "It was like an animated cartoon that lifts you off your feet and then acts as a magnet, pulling you right there."
Hailed as the "Taj Mahal of bakeries," Van de Kamp's was founded in 1915 by Theodore Van de Kamp and Lawrence L. Frank, van cleef mini necklace replica, uncles of former California Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp. They parlayed a $200 investment and one product potato chips into a fragrant food empire.
"They were a very good team," said Richard N. Frank, 82, son of Lawrence Frank. "My father was the creative one. My uncle was terrific with numbers and did the administrative work. My dad created the products."
He said his father, who came from a long line of sausage and sauerkraut makers in Milwaukee, came to Los Angeles in 1912 "to get away from his uncles in the family's meatpacking business."
Lawrence Frank's future bride, Henrietta "Nettie" Van de Kamp, whose family also hailed from Milwaukee, van cleef and arpels four leaf clover necklace replica, followed him west; they married in 1913.
He first got a job at a furniture store but soon went to work for his brother in the potato chip business.
Nettie's brother, Theodore, arrived for a visit a couple of years later, looking for a business opportunity. Hitting on the idea of selling the chips that Ralph Frank made, the brothers in law formed a partnership.
Using the Van de Kamp name, they opened their first store Jan. 6, 1915,van cleef and arpels necklaces fake, near the corner of 2nd and Spring streets in downtown Los Angeles. Only 8 feet wide, it was designed to keep customers out. From the top half of a Dutch door, Nettie and her sister, Marion, sold chips to sidewalk customers.
Frank had reasoned that the name would be memorable and its Dutch heritage would connote cleanliness and freshness. They underlined that idea with their motto: "Made Clean, Kept Clean, van cleef small necklace replica, Sold Clean."
By the end of the year, they had opened four more potato chip shops downtown. But a shortage of potatoes soon induced them to sell other items, including salted pretzels and S shaped coconut macaroons.
Within two years, they opened their first coffee shop, at 5th and Spring streets, where the 12 story Alexandria Hotel annex now stands.
In 1921, Van de Kamp's set up the first of its little prefab Dutch windmills in a lot near Beverly Boulevard and Western Avenue. There, they sold cakes, pies and Danishes, a list that eventually included 140 products.
"The fairy tale windmill, which turned counterclockwise by motor, was the handiwork of Harry Oliver," Richard Frank said.
Oliver, an art director for Hollywood studios and a builder of Storybook style houses, had just completed what passersby called the Witch's House as the offices and dressing rooms for Willat Studios in Culver City. The Hansel and Gretel style cottage was moved to Beverly Hills in 1934; today, it's a private residence.
Van de Kamp's windmills were designed to catch the eye of passing motorists in what was becoming a car culture. The theme bakeries continued to multiply across the Southland and along the Washington and Oregon coasts.
As a sideline, Lawrence Frank incorporated his own company basing the name on his nickname, Larry to operate restaurants and similar businesses. The centerpieces remain the Tam O'Shanter Inn on Los Feliz Boulevard, designed by Oliver in 1922 with an artfully ramshackle roof, and Lawry's the Prime Rib, which became a fixture on La Cienega Boulevard 16 years later. Richard Frank, although semi retired, is chairman of Lawry's Restaurants Inc.

A Thesis Exploring Honey and the Ecstatic
My father always told me when I was growing up, that every artist had some sort of trauma or was troubled and unusual in some way. I would always think to myself, being an adoring daughter, this must be true: Van Gogh cut off his ear and was crazy, Manet I confused with Van Gogh, so they were both crazy, and Dali was a man who thought clocks melted. Growing up I was always compelled to draw and recreate things, but never did I imagine myself an artist, I was too normal, I could never be. My father was a teacher and my mother stayed at home to raise my brothers and I, so when she passed away from brain cancer when I was 10, things were naturally different after that.
At the cremation service all I can remember is lots of people and their uncomfortable condolences that I didn't want to have to deal with. I knew I should appear somber, but I really wanted to go play with my cousins. I believe this is when I first became interested in and disgusted by the idea of surface.
I went to church for most of my grade school years, but I am neither religious nor Catholic. Raised Methodist, I became fascinated with the idea of religious objects and sacred images when I was exposed to them through my stepmother, who is Catholic. There is an intense ritual and sense of the ornate in a Catholic mass that is very beautiful and foreign to me. They are very interested in surface always going to church, always looking nice at church, having different saint pendants for different reasons, having a beautiful space to worship in. Not having a large amount of faith myself, I am jealous of those who do have faith because it is such a magical thing.
One can overcome anything if you just have faith in something.
I was first attracted to drawing and making art as a means to recreate interesting and beautiful things and people around me. If I was able to draw it with some semblance of realism, that particular thing somehow became mine.
I was initially afraid to paint because it was so historic and revered I knew I wouldn't be good at it, I was only good at drawing. Forced to start in a high school art class, I miraculously discovered that I, indeed, liked painting even more than drawing, and I had a natural affinity for color relationships.
Now, working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing, I have stopped drawing as a means of having possession of something more fully. I continue to create and paint because, for me, every new painting is a risk.
Painting is a very public medium, van cleef magic alhambra necklace replica, but still such a personal creation process, and it is a risk because my next painting could easily be awful, I never know.
With each risk I continue to take, I gain something, whether the result of that risk is a flop or a success. With each painting I enjoy working through the intense frustration in the middle that always happens, which suddenly lifts to a realization that what you have created is actually working, cartier clover necklace replica, grabbing people's attention and pulling them in.
Learning to work through this frustration has also allowed me to learn that creative inspiration isn't always a flash of brilliant insight; it takes hard work and research to find inspiration. I found mine by accident in my first painting of this series. Originally I was interested in the honey and skin combination because of the implications of time from the honey's slow progression down the face. However, when I showed the professors my resource images, they were intrigued by the serene submission of the expression.
There was a "piet" (representation of the Virgin Mary mourning over Jesus'
body) feeling to the image ("Piet"). This new take on what I was doing sent me off to do lots of research and change my direction. I looked at a lot of paintings featuring Christian saints and martyrs, interested in the similar poses and expressions on all of those portrayed. A lot of the paintings I looked at came from the Caravaggio school of painters during the very early Baroque period. These painters emphasized a new realism and exaggerated sense of light and shadow (Weller 1 25). I did not want to keep the icon in the typical format of small and devotional, van cleef necklace alhambra fake, however. By taking the iconic poses and blowing them into monumental scale it made the private images become suddenly public.
Through the process of making the paintings 1 4, I began to envision the honey as a sort of cosmic goo, a heavenly, sensual, and yet still bodily, substance that these women were being anointed with. There is a compelling submission to and enjoyment of this glowing substance that could really, potentially, suffocate them. I originally had no solid reason for a relationship between the honey and the religious references I was using except for the fact that I felt that there was one.
After more experiences of having honey covering my skin for reference material, I began to be aware of the obvious sensual side, but also the side of the sticky and uncomfortable. It was unpleasant being covered in honey.
Interested in this dichotomy, I began researching the accounts of ecstasy that Saint Theresa recorded, in which she revealed the intense pleasure yet also pain that is involved in communicating with God (Warma 510). I researched the historical use and symbolism of honey. Honey was the only known sweetener for many years in the world, and was used for many different things. It was a preservative and antimicrobial solution (Bishop 174). It has also been thought to extend life and health for many years (Ransome 187).
Revered for its useful qualities, honey was also highly prized as a religious offering in many cultures (Bishop 178). The most fascinating fact about honey is that many experts believe it to be the food that the mythical ambrosia, or food of the Gods, was drawn from (Ransome 135). The Mayans also had a similar use of honey, brewing a beverage from it called balche, which was then used to induce hallucinogenic states. These states allowed the Mayans to communicate with their deities (Bishop 184). These hallucinations are undoubtedly similar in nature to the ecstatic experiences of Saint Theresa.
I was trying to evoke with these paintings a beautiful submission to pain and discomfort that you find frequently in people of faith, like Saint Theresa.
I am interested in the idea that one can feel such excruciating pain yet the pleasure is even so much greater that you can't possibly wish it to end.
There also is an interesting sexual aspect of Saint Theresa's accounts. She refers to God piercing her through the heart, and the pleasure she describes is almost orgasmic in nature (Warma 509). In my later works I am becoming more interested in this sexual aspect of the pleasure and pain combination.
I have also been thinking about the space between two beings and what is it exactly that charges this in between. I hope to explore this further in my works to come.
My father's perception of an artist still stands clearly in my mind, that they must be crazy and disturbed. However, being a graduating art student on my way to becoming an artist, with both my ears still attached, I suppose I shall have to work my way towards rescinding that definition in my mind.

A City Faces Its 'Berlin Wall'
Now, the region is starting to think about what Syracuse might look like without the viaduct, which both speeds traffic through the city and divides the community along economic and racial lines. If the viaduct is torn down, Syracuse would join San Francisco and Milwaukee, where the removal of urban highways over the past two decades has spurred development. Still, it's early in the process.
Syracuse's 'Berlin Wall'
Hazel Miller lives about 100 feet from I 81 in Pioneer Homes, a low rise public housing project in Syracuse. She moved there 40 years ago, when homes were still being ripped down to make room for the elevated highway.
I 81 in Syracuse was built right through the middle of one of New York state's first public housing projects, gutting this predominantly African American neighborhood. As long as Miller has lived there, the highway has driven away commerce.
"We don't even have a grocery store close," she says.
Syracuse Common Council President Van Robinson says replacing the viaduct with a street level boulevard would breathe life into the city's withered urban core. He has long seen the viaduct as a barrier that separates the haves from the have nots.
"It's not a question of if it should be torn down. The question is when will it be torn down," he says.
Robinson, who founded the local chapter of the NAACP, has wanted to remove I 81 since he first arrived in Syracuse decades ago.
"It was a city divided," he says. "In fact, I immediately, van necklace replica, at that time . called it the 'Berlin Wall.' "
On one side of that wall is prosperous University Hill, home to the institutions that drive Syracuse's local economy. On the other side is poverty and neglect. A few years ago,van cleef black onyx necklace replica, some streets within the Pioneer Homes were gated off in response to a rash of drive by shootings. Robinson says tearing down I 81 is a relatively simple step that could help turn the neighborhood around.
"It's not as if it's a hundred miles of roadbed we have to put down.
"We're in full blown sprawl mode right now," Carter says. "And one of the ways we can kind of refocus on the core would be to have [I 81] cease to be an impediment."
Bill Egloff, the project manager for the New York State Department of Transportation who is in charge of keeping I 81 standing, admits that something needs to be done about the highway. It plays a vital role in making Syracuse what planning officials call a "20 minute city," where you can drive anywhere you need to quickly and easily. But Egloff says tearing it down is no simple fix.
"If the remaining traffic had to negotiate the city streets as they are right now, that would be a problem, van cleef small necklace replica," he says.
The state's transportation department is in the early stages of a planning process called the I 81 Challenge. Planners recently gauged public opinion on three basic options: keep the viaduct and update it to current standards; tear it down and build a sunken roadway; or tear it down and build a boulevard. Egloff says none of the options will be cheap.
"Five years ago,van cleef necklace alhambra fake, we had our structures engineer give us a rough estimate of the whole deck replacement and that was in the neighborhood of $350 million," says Egloff.
Planning officials now say that "cheap" option would be at least a half a billion dollars. Traditionally, nearly all of that price tag is picked up by the federal government.
It's a big investment with a big impact on the future of the city.
A Long, Lasting Shadow?
Don Mitchell, a professor of geography at Syracuse University, is concerned that removing I 81 could unleash a flood of gentrification. Still, he says he's generally supportive of tearing down one of the city's most uninviting assets.
"It's a huge psychological as well as physical barrier," Mitchell says.
But for Hazel Miller, I 81 in her backyard is part of what she calls the "beautiful scenery" of flowing traffic. She would rather keep the viaduct as is. Miller is not confident that what might come next will be any better.
"I don't know how wide that [proposed] boulevard is going to be, but I know [there] wouldn't be as many tractor trailer trucks and stuff like that going over," she says.

A Phan's Review of
In October of 1986, "The Phantom of the Opera" opened at Her Majesty's Theatre. Many speculated how Michael Crawford would fare in such a serious and demanding role and whether the production in general would succeed. To the delight of audiences, not only the haunting score and fashionably bizarre sets and costumes, but the story and performances engrained this teasure forever into our thoughts.
But then there is February 2010, a time that for many a phan (yes, "phan"), not only insulted the memory of the original production, but severly harmed it.
The Beginning of the MysteryWhere "The Phantom of the Opera" StartedIn 1910, "Le Fant de l'Op was published, written by the French novelist Gaston Leroux, who only lived to just see the first silent film be released.
The novel crafted such an intense world, filled with characters so distinct. Many of the people met in the original story did make the transfer over to the stage adaption, though changed, of course. Under Gaston's writings, Meg and Christine were not friends.
However, this is not quite the focus I wish to take at the moment in this review. This will factor in later though. Trust me.
The main draw to the musical has always been that passionate, doomed love that is so similarly seen in "Romeo and Juliet". No matter how hard you root for Christine to choose the Phantom, you know deep in your heart that they could never be together as where they come from are two completely different places and generally speaking, our Erik is just not good for Christine.
Erik's desperate cry of sadness in the end of the first production is just so heart wrenching that there should really be no other end. Gaston Leroux penned Erik's death after he allowed Christine to leave with Raoul, van cleef replica alhambra necklace. His love for her and sadness for knowing he could never truly make her happy consumed him and killed him,van cleef fake necklace.
I am sure that many phans, and not just myself, van cleef & arpels knock off necklace, felt Lloyd Webber's Phantom met a very similar fate. Who wants to live on when the one you love can never be yours? It's heart breaking.
But then "Love Never Dies" came along. There is simply no denying that Andrew Lloyd Webber is a wizard at his work. With the exception of one song ("What a Dreadful Town") and the stolen bits from the previous "Phantom", the score to "Love Never Dies" is quite beautiful and catchy.
That's not to say anything for the lyrics. The lyrics are very second rate, a few clever bits here and there, but the majority being just. very awkward and out of place.
As I have not seen the original London LND production, any and all critiques made regarding physical aspect of the show will be based on the Austrialian production (which I saw for my birthday in 2012 and currently own a copy of).
For anyone not familiar with the 1986 production, its basic premise is the obsessive love a deformed composer has for a young dancer who was promised by her father to be visited by the Angel of Music when he died and went to heaven. The Phantom uses her guilibility to his own ends, pretending to be the angel. But suddenly, a childhood sweetheart of Christine's shows up and old flames are ignited. In the end, Mme. Giry helps Raoul to get Christine back from the Phantom, and then Meg, Mme.
And then we have the premise for "Love Never Dies", in which we find all our beloved and cherished characters completely changed and not for the better, replacing the grand opera for an amusement park and sideshow attraction (the location not an entirely bad idea).
But we shall do this is a slightly orderly fashion, treating this like a video movie review, going through from beginning to end with some discussion along the way. This would not be such an issue if the gap of time between the two stories didn't matter so much. "Love Never Dies" (according to the libretto of the Original London Cast) is set around 1907 with only ten years having passed since the events of "Phantom" and the text at the start of the broadcast version (the Australian production) places the final lair scene in 1895. According to the "Phantom" libretto (from the 1986 Original Cast) the time period of the main events is not stated, but it is written that the auction scene at the start of the show is in 1911, or a mere 4 or 6 years after LND and Raoul is written in to be at age 70 or so.
Dang, Raoul. You sure did age fast.
The two openings are vastly different in arrangement, while pretty much keeping the same materials.
In the London opening, we start in a fashion similiar to that of the original opening, in the present which is actually after the main part of the story. Mme. Giry is reminiscing about "the good old days", standing on the boardwalk of Coney Island in New York, when confronted by one of the Phantom's assistants, Miss Fleck. Their little memory song beautifully connects to the opening overture. It's simple and it's sweet. This is one of the few good moments in the show.
The newer opening, starts with the "Music of the Night" rip off song "Till I Hear You Sing" (still a wonderful song when taken out of context of the musical, like most of the songs in it). This song originally came later in the show, right before Christine arrived to Coney. After the Phantom sings on about his misery, we get to the overture but the execution of it is not as good as it could have been. It feels like the design team tried way to hard to balance "weird" with "attractive". The whole overture is like watching a man in a white van attempt to draw in children to the back. This is Phantom! I want to feel sucked in and entranced, not feel cheapened.
In my humble opinion, I find the London opening much more inimate and personal.
To skip a lot of unnecessary non sense, I shall briefly summarize: the Phantom owns a park called Phantasma (although, van cleef clover replica necklace, now he goes by "Mr. Y", not "Mr. Why" like I first thought upon hearing the soundtrack), and he has hired on Mme. Giry and Meg, who both helped to smuggle the Phantom out of France and to America. Giry retains the same basic rank she held at the opera, while Meg has moved onto be the sort of star performer, the "Oh La La Girl", and the one who deals with any "financial" snags that comes along, which is to say she sleeps with business men to help keep Phantasma afloat and out of debt.
When mother and daughter hear that Christine will be traveling to New York to sing for the opening of Hammerstein's new opera house, they both start to recall the events of ten years ago, and it seems that suddenly Mme. Giry has a dislike for Christine because the young girl picked Raoul over the Phantom, despite the fact that Giry as the one who led Raoul to the Phantom to save Christine who ultimately did choose to stay, but our loveable old Phantom decided to let Christine go.
So, long story short: the Phantom is still pining away for Christine and comes up with a plan to lure her to him.
This brings us to the biggest and most disgusting character change of all and that is the change of Raoul de Chagny.
Raoul was never perfect in the original production. His character was flawed from the start and, since "The Phantom of the Opera" was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber for Sarah Brightman, a man who obviously more identified with the Phantom character, it really is no surprise. Seeing Raoul as a drunken and near abusive gambler is just too horrible though. This what has happened to him. He spends most of his time talking or singing about being drunk, getting drunk, being a jerk to Christine and Gustave, their child, or whining about how much he is jerk.
The evening that the de Chagny family arrives, Raoul leaves Christine alone once little 10 year old Gustave (yes, his age is important) is sent to bed.
The Phantom then, after meeting Gustave, who was awoken by a nightmare of being drowned, threatens Christine into singing his song for him instead of singing for Hammerstein. She, of course, agress to his demands.
The next day, Christine and Raoul run into Meg and her mother, revealing to all of them what the Phantom is up to. In the meantime, Gustave has run off to see Mr. Y, who promised to give him a tour of the park.

A recap of the wild ride so far
voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the province 41st general election, after a tough three way election campaign that could end up being a close race to the finish. Green leader Andrew Weaver have all had their moments to shine during four weeks of campaigning that have produced several moments of fireworks, testy exchanges and clear divisions between the parties.
For Clark, re election for a fifth Liberal term would be historic. Bennett Social Credit dynasty for the longest term in office in provincial history. President Donald Trump aggressive protectionist trade actions.
New Democrats have countered with their own message: It time for a change. Sixteen years of Liberal government are enough, and voters should send a message by relegating them to the opposition bench, Horgan has argued. The NDP have pointed to a series of scandals, the failed court battle with teachers, the influence of political donations by Liberal donors, rising fees, cutbacks to services, and the housing affordability crisis as key reasons to oust the governing party.
The wildcard of the election has been Weaver and the Greens. Strong contenders on southern Vancouver Island, Weaver has sought to expand his party influence to the Lower Mainland the Interior. It unclear how the Green vote will materialize on May 9 and whether it will result in a handful of new seats for the party or prove to be a spoiler for the NDP and Liberals in key ridings.
As the election nears its conclusion, here are some of the highlights:
The NDP was out of the gate early, campaigning a full week before the official April 11 writ drop. But quickly, the two main parties were locked in battle over one of their first campaign promises: bridge tolls.
The Liberals promised to cap the annual cost of tolls for drivers on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges at $500, potentially saving a daily commuter $1,000, and costing government $30 million annually.
The NDP quickly counterpunched with a promise to completely eliminate the tolls, and fund the almost $200 million annual cost out of the Liberals Prosperity Fund. But the fund only has $500 million in it, leading the two parties to spar about how the NDP will pay the bill in the future (the party never really explained how).
Clark accused the NDP of to come up with ideas. Horgan argued tolls were unfair to drivers south of the Fraser River. going to give Lower Mainland commuters a break, he said. Both were fighting for voters in Surrey and Delta. Weaver said he would keep the tolls because they discourage driving and pollution.
Lost in the shuffle was sensible, long term, transit planning, with mayors and transportation planners saying the bridge toll promises from both parties were unwise. Later, the parties would spar over each offering 40 per cent provincial funding for the proposed Broadway and Surrey transit lines, and the NDP offering extra cash for public transit and a higher priority on replacing the Pattullo Bridge.
Voters didn have to wait long to get the full platforms from the NDP and Liberals. Among the top items was an NDP promise to eliminate Medical Services Plan premiums within four years, at a cost of $1.7 billion.
Horgan promised a post election review panel to figure out how to pay for it, but some of his candidates blurted out it would be rolled into income tax. If that happened, Horgan said he would protect low and middle income residents (defined as making under $70,000 a year) from tax increases, causing further speculation of a post election tax hike for others.
The Liberals, van cleef knock off necklaces, too, promised to eliminate MSP, but at a vague unknown date in the future when the economy can support it.
The Liberals attacked the NDP platform for having a $6 billion hole in un costed or improperly costed promises but then were criticized for exaggerating the NDP positions.
The NDP promised $10 a day childcare phased in over 10 years, van cleef butterfly replica necklace, a two year Hydro freeze, a review of ICBC rates, and a rollback of ferry rates on smaller routes by 15 per cent. They also pledged to rid Surrey schools of portables, and increase taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

The first debate with the party leaders on April 20 got weird, fast.
During a discussion on bridge tolls, an agitated Horgan accused moderator Bill Good of being unfair on time allocation. Clark, whose strategy at times was obviously to goad Horgan temper, briefly placed her hand on his arm and said, down, van cleef and arpels butterfly fake necklace, John. touch me again, please, shot back Horgan. you, very much. went worse for Horgan. Opponents launched on Horgan for his temper and coined the nickname Horgan, clover replica necklace van cleef. Horgan tried to frame the issue as one of passion.
Clark performance, too, was widely criticized as uncharacteristically shaky, as she read from her notes. Weaver focused his attacks on Clark instead of his main rival, Horgan.
The second debate on April 25, broadcast on major TV networks, went much smoother. Horgan and Weaver sparred. Clark ignored questions to focus on her jobs narrative. Each party declared victory.
A chance encounter in North Vancouver between Clark and a retired social worker assistant, Linda Higgins, turned into a social media firestorm.
Higgins approached Clark in a grocery store on April 27 and said: "I would never vote for you because of " But Clark cut her off. "You don't have to that's why we live in a democracy," Clark said, before turning her back on Higgins and walking away.
The encounter went viral, in no small part because Liberal supporters tried falsely to portray Higgins as an NDP plant. Those who dislike Clark pointed to it as an example of a mean spirited character.
The tone of the election campaign was far more negative than in 2013, when the NDP refused to launch personal attacks. This time around, the NDP created a series of attack ads depicting Clark as a corrupt leader beholden to her corporate donors. The Liberals countered with ads that portrayed Horgan in the pocket of the United Steelworkers, which donated more than $600,000 to his campaign and paid the salaries for the NDP campaign director and two senior workers.
The Liberals also sent a panelled truck with anti Horgan signs (dubbed the Truck out to crash NDP events in the Lower Mainland. The move largely backfired with negative press for the Liberals.
The ads got worse as the campaign wore on, with the NDP releasing a highly charged video near the end that condemned Clark for the suicide of a fired health researcher in 2012.

The ads got worse as the campaign wore on, with the NDP releasing a highly charged video near the end that condemned Clark for the suicide of a fired health researcher in 2012.

al Qaeda claims expansion
NEW DELHI Al Qaeda has expanded into India, the leader of the terror group said in a video released Thursday, vowing that its militants would bring Islamic law to the entire subcontinent and "wage jihad against its enemies."
At least three Indian states with large Muslim populations have been put on alert in the wake of the video's release, local TV stations reported, though there was no indication of an increased security presence.
The new group "is the fruit of a blessed effort of more than two years to gather the mujahedeen in the Indian subcontinent into a single entity," al Qaeda chief Ayman al Zawahri said in the video.
While his comments raised concerns in India, al Zawahri's message seemed largely directed at his own rivals in the international jihad movement, and with raising al Qaeda's profile in the wake of repeated successes by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group.
Al Qaeda has been increasingly overshadowed by ISIS,van cleef replica clover necklace, whose fighters have captured wide swaths of Syria and Iraq and recently executed two American journalists.
Al Qaeda "is struggling for its legitimacy in the eyes of the radicalized Muslim world," said Ajai Sahni, a top Indian security analyst with the New Delhi based Institute for Conflict Management.
"Osama bin Laden has been killed and (al Qaeda's) entire top leadership, apart from Zawahri and a few others, one by one have been decimated by the American drone attacks," he said.
CBS News terrorism consultant Jere Van Dyk agrees, saying the announcement by al Zawahri really "is not new."
"There are already underground jihadi movements in India, Kashmir and elsewhere in India, which has a larger Muslim population than Pakistan," says Van Dyk, who describes the move more as "an attempt to compete with" ISIS, and to "garner publicity."
While al Zawahri's statement referred to the "Indian subcontinent" a term that most commonly refers to India, van cleef arpels alhambra knock off necklace, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal his comments were widely seen as directed at India, a largely Hindu nation with a large Muslim minority.
Al Zawahri said the group, Qaedat al Jihad in the Indian subcontinent, would fight for an Islamic state and laws across the region, "which was part of the Muslims' territories before it was occupied by the infidel enemy."
The leader of the new group, Essam Omar, van cleef and arpels replica butterfly necklace, said in an audio recording released with the video, that Jews and Hindus who he referred to as "apostates of India" "will watch your destruction by your own eyes."
Fighters will "storm your barricades with cars packed with gunpowder," Omar said, decrying what he called the region's "injustice toward Muslims."
Until recently, India had largely seen itself as beyond the recruiting territory of international jihadists like al Qaeda. Over the past few months, however, ISIS has grown in prominence in India, and is increasingly believed to be gaining followers here. Last month, an Indian engineering student who had traveled to Iraq with friends, and who was thought to have joined the Islamic State, was reported killed.
Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh met Thursday morning with top security and intelligence officials to discuss the threat, van cleef butterfly fake necklace.
A spokesman for India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party said the statement was "a matter of serious concern. But there is nothing to worry about. We have a strong government at the federal level."
India, though, has a notoriously underfunded and ill trained security infrastructure. In 2008, a small group of Pakistani militants attacked Mumbai, India's financial hub, effectively shutting down the city for days and killing 166 people.
New Delhi has also waged a long running insurgency war in Kashmir, India's only majority Muslim state, with militants fighting to bring independence to the Himalayan region or join it to neighboring Pakistan. The fighting has left thousands of people dead.

a new comedy for BBC Four
Character profilesWhere it all beganTen things you didn't know about Bob ServantAs a Dundee man I am very excited to be in this comedy set in Broughty Ferry. With the comic writing skills of fellow Dundonian, Neil Forsyth, and the audacious spirit of Bob Servant it captures the very essence of the unique East Coast humour."Brian Cox

BBC Four's new comedy series, Bob Servant Independent, follows the trials and tribulations of Bob Servant (Brian Cox) as he endeavours to sell himself, relentlessly, to the good people of Broughty Ferry.
The series stars Brian Cox with Jonathan Watson, Pollyanna McIntosh, and Rufus Jones and will transmit on BBC Four from early January.
The Scottish town of Broughty Ferry doesn't know what's hit it. The sudden death of the sitting MP has resulted in a by election that could change the political map of the UK. Bob Servant (Brian Cox) has been waiting his whole life for this level of attention and he's willing to do anything to keep it.
Bob sells himself as a man of the people but doesn't really like people. He also has absolutely no understanding of the political process and uses the by election campaign as a heaven sent opportunity for self promotion.
His campaign manager is Frank (Jonathan Watson), Bob's long suffering best friend and neighbour, and their love hate relationship is a central aspect of Bob Servant Independent.
Brian Cox said: "As a Dundee man I am very excited to be in this comedy set in Broughty Ferry. With the comic writing skills of fellow Dundonian, Neil Forsyth, and the audacious spirit of Bob Servant it captures the very essence of the unique East Coast humour."
As the series progresses, Bob has an increasingly fractious relationship with the favourite to win the seat, a slick professional politician called Nick Edwards (Rufus Jones). Bob also struggles to deal with Edwards' campaign manager (and wife),fake van cleef flower necklace, Philippa Edwards (Pollyanna McIntosh), a smart, no nonsense woman, always two steps ahead of Frank.
The two campaigns jar markedly while the series builds to the natural climax of election night. He's been a supporter of the Bob Servant cause for a long time. To be honest, Bob would probably be disappointed that he's been overlooked to play himself, but even he would reluctantly accept Brian taking up the challenge."
Bob Servant Independent is written by Neil Forsyth and produced by Owen Bell.
It was commissioned by BBC Four and Cheryl Taylor, former Controller, Comedy Commissioning, and Mark Freeland (BBC Four) and Ewan Angus (BBC Scotland) are the co executive producers.
Character profilesBob Servant (played by Brian Cox)
Businessman, raconteur, optimist and a man of endless ambition, Bob Servant is a hero for our troubled times. Born and bred in Broughty Ferry, Servant sees it as his natural fiefdom. This belief stems largely from Servant's dominant position in Broughty Ferry's notorious 'Cheeseburger Wars' a period of riotous appreciation for the snack that caused madness on the streets and lined Servant's pockets. Now retired and living in his stylish riverside house, with its much admired (by him) extension, fake van cleef necklace price, Servant is looking for a new cause. When it's announced that Broughty Ferry is to have a by election, one man is ready and willing to step back into the limelight. Bob Servant, Independent.
Frank (played by Jonathan Watson)
Bob Servant's great loyalist is Frank, the ultimate right hand man who has spent decades under Bob's close tutelage. Frank was Director of Sauces on the cheeseburger vans and now has a similarly impressive title Campaign Manager for Bob Servant Independent. It's a job he takes very, very seriously. Nothing would make Frank happier than helping his best friend and mentor win the by election.
Bob's View on Frank "The Dean to my Torvill, replica van cleef and arpels butterfly necklace."
Nick Edwards (played by Rufus Jones)
A Westminster protg, Nick Edwards is a career politician who descends on Broughty Ferry to wow the locals and pick up what he sees as a safe seat. He heads up an impressive operation. Slick, well funded, highly organised, van cleef & arpels necklace price, the Edwards campaign is everything that Bob and Frank are not. Nick has come here to win a by election but no amount of political training could have prepared him for the experience of taking on Bob Servant.
Bob's view on Nick "Wet behind the ears."
Philippa Edwards (played by Pollyanna McIntosh)
The power behind the Edwards throne, Philippa Edwards is a smooth political operator here to guide her husband to by election success. Elegant, highly intelligent and domineering, she is greeted with utter confusion by Bob and Frank. The cheeseburger industry was not a place for powerful women. For Frank, who as Campaign Manager is Philippa's direct rival, she is all his nightmares come true.
Bob's view on Philippa "Basically just a pretty Hitler."
Lady Provost (played by Victoria Liddelle)
Rhona McDonald is the Lady Provost of Broughty Ferry. A long term observer of Bob Servant, she is dismayed to see the arrival into the race of a man who made money while "reintroducing scurvy" to Broughty Ferry. She is impressed by the urbane Edwards, and watches in horror as Bob somehow battles himself into the by election race.
Bob's view on Lady Provost "You give someone a special necklace and they think they're Mother Theresa."

Adventures in Maui
Following a path that is centuries old of winding roads, twisting trails, and one lane bridges that lead to lush forests, and breath taking coastal views. The Road to Hana is a 55 mile journey into the untouched core of Maui.
Hana itself is not the bustling city that you would expect out of somewhere, like Waikiki, but the allure of ensuring you experience this on your vacation is the adventure that you go on to reach Hana. As the old saying goes, journey is the destination
There is so much to see on this great voyage, and luckily, there are mile markers that can be used as a reference guide when navigating. The following are just some of the highlight areas that we personally witnessed on our trip, and we even felt that we barely scratched the surface as there is so much more that we could have seen.
Beautiful Twin Falls beyond the Fruit Stand
1. Begin your journey in Pa which is a little town on Maui North Shore. This will be where you fill up your gas tank, as there are no gas stations along Hana highway, and the station in Hana closes at 6:00pm. 10 miles past the Pa the roadside mile posts begin measuring the 36 miles to Hana town, and the infamous winding and noodling roads begin 3 miles after.
2. Just after mile marker 2 be on the look out for a fruit stand that sells fresh juices of coconut, van cleef butterfly necklace, pineapple, and sugar cane to refresh and rejuvenate your bodies. Following the path beyond the stand will lead to a trail that leads to the picturesque waterfalls known as the Twin Falls. Sparkling pools of emerald water under the waterfalls provide excellent swimming and photo opportunities.
3. At mile marker 12 you will come across Kaumahina State Wayside Park, which is a chance to stretch out your legs and use a flush toilet. Even for a rest area, you still get a great overlooking view of Ke Peninsula. The park is open from 6:00am to 6:00pm and admission is free.
Overlooking Taro Patches at Kaumahina State Wayside Park
4. About 6 miles from Kaumahina State Wayside Park, you can stop at the Ke Overlook, where you can behold the quilt like effect that the taro patches create below. Taro is seen in Hawaii as an agricultural art, and the crop is deeply rooted Hawaiian tradition and culture.
5. A little ways before mile marker 19 you will come across Wailua Village, which houses a very interesting story regarding the formerly named St. Gabriel Catholic Church made of coral built in 1860. Now called Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, legend has it a storm washed coral onto the shore to build the church and waves took any extra coral back to the sea.
6. Get your cameras ready because just beyond mile marker 21, you will encounter arguably the most extraordinary falls in all of east Maui, Wakani Falls. Since the water is not diverted for sugar irrigation, the falls have a much more dramatic effect.
7. The rainiest and densest part of the East Maui rain forest can be found at mile marker 25, in Nahiku village. During ancient days, this was a busy settlement of a few hundred residents, but ever since the failed rubber growing operation in the 1900 the settlement has relegated to about 80 people. Just 10 minutes before arriving into Hana, you will find the quaint Nahiku Ti Gallery and Coffee Shop where you can order energizing espresso, buy local coffee, dried fruits, Hawaiian crafts, and delicious banana bread. If you lucky enough the barbecue will be fired up and you can try fish skewers, and the island favorite; baked breadfruit.
8. Just past mile marker 32 you will reach Wai State Park, which is the home to one of Maui only volcanic sand beaches. Baking right into the ocean, this is a great place to picnic, camp, hike, and swim. Numerous times a year the tide pools turn red as if bleeding. Local legend claims the color represents the blood of Princess Popo who was said to have been murdered by her husband, van cleef and arpels necklaces replica, Chief Ka Scientists however, attribute the water changing color as small shrimp coming to the shore, but whatever you wish to believe, the black sands and sapphire water are sure to impart a lifelong impression.
9. After all the driving, pulling over, picture taking, and swimming, you will finally arrive at Hana. Do not be discouraged that this town is a little more than a gas station, a grocery store, a post office, fake van cleef and arpels necklace price, and a general store. Hana is rich in Hawaiian history and lore as it is the birthplace of Queen Ka who is known to be to be the favorite wife of King Kamehameha I, and held great power during Kamehameha reign. A few miles past Hana and off the shore is Alau Island, where the legend of the demigod Maui is said to have fished up the Hawaiian Islands.
10. By now, if you decided not to stay in Hana, you would want to head back towards the Maui main area before it gets dark. The drive back is just as impressive and actually gives a different perspective of the scenery as the sun begins to set. When you get back into Pa I would highly recommend making your way over to Mama Fish House (and I hoping you made reservations) and get yourself ready to experience the best fine dining experience Maui has to offer. I won go into too much detail about this place because this is something you would have to savor on your own, but I will say that this will be the perfect closing to an adventure filled day of sight seeing and Hawaiian culture.
c) If you are prone to carsickness, be sure to take medication before you start the drive, and stop regularly to give yourself a break.
d) Bring water shoes or old shoes you don mind getting dirty or wet. You will need them for crossing streams on some stop overs. Swim at your own risk, beware of flash floods, and check the weather before heading out.
e) In high seasons the road tends to clog as vehicles can only drive as fast as the car in front of them. You will barely notice the mini convoys forming as you will be too busy taking pictures and capturing each moment, however, as a courtesy to other drivers, if you find yourself in the role of locomotive, pull over and let the other drivers through.
f) If you see any vehicles who happen to just be zipping along the road, they are most likely locals to the area, be sure to pull over and let them pass.
g) Approaching the noodling roads can be a bit intimidating at first, but after a few passes, fake clover necklace van cleef, you get the hang of it. If the idea of driving the Road to Hana still feels a bit much, you can always inquire on van tours, which make stops all along the way.

Adelaide v Melbourne
How it was won and lost
It's very early, but Melbourne did enough against Adelaide in the first of the triple header last night to continue the belief it is on the right road. The Demons' 10 point win had its expected flaws this time of the year, replica clover necklace van cleef, but the spasms of flair and quality play was most encouraging. Adelaide started where it left off last season paying the penalty for appalling kicking for goal. The Crows are celebrating their 20th year in the AFL and it s like nothing has changed problems moving forward, and when the breaks came most times chances went begging.
While these games are about trying out the newcomers, it was largely Melbourne's experienced campaigners, especially Aaron Davey, Mark Jamar, Colin Garland, new captain Brad Green and Colin Sylvia who led the way. And continuing the progress of recent years, the relatively young players, which included Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove, van cleef necklaces, shone. However, beyond the new conditions the last touch, out of bounds rule even confused the umpires was the anticipation of the new kids on the block. Stefan Martin showed fine glimpses of his 2009 form. The big man worked hard, and showed that he can be a key position player or a great back up to Jamar. Jamar was dominant in the first half, starting in the ruck, fake van cleef necklaces, taking two strong marks on the last line of defence, and finishing in the forward lines. There was also much to like about the forward line, particularly Liam Jurrah, who did well early, and was constructive around the ball. Jurrah took the mark of the year when he was here last year, and he showed he can continue to be a key factor up forward. Late in the first half he took a strong mark from behind Phil Davis and Richard Tambling. It was far from spectacular, but his perfect timing was noteworthy. Addam Maric, who was one of many in this game desperate to impress after a disappointing 2010, stood out in the forward lines. Maric kicked two goals, the first courtesy of the new out of bounds rule. A stronger Jack Watts provided Melbourne with a good target, and worked hard. James Strauss, who had limited opportunities last year because of injuries, did well when he came off the bench.
Michael Evans (rookie draft/Claremont/Marist juniors): After beginning on the bench, put in an impressive performance. He didn't start well, replica van cleef and arpels butterfly necklace, kicking into the man in defence, but recovered. Worked hard and
found spaces. A likely type.
Jeremy Howe (Hobart/Dodges Ferry): Spent most of the game on the bench, so hard to judge.
Daniel Nicholson (rookie draft/University Blues/East Ballarat): Was the sub and did not get a run.
Adelaide wasted opportunities as a team, but it was young Shaun McKernan who made the most of his against Melbourne. After showing encouraging signs in 2009 he didn't get an AFL game last season despite sound performances in the local league, but last night did well to kick two secondhalf goals. He missed a "sitter", but that was part of Adelaide's game. The Crows tried their new Richmond recruit Richard Tambling at half back, and while his work rate was high he generally struggled against taller opponents. Andy Otten, who missed last year with a knee injury, was tried midfield and was very good with 12 disposals. Carlton recruit Sam Jacobs did a reasonable job in ruck, and can prove himself a valuable asset. Nathan van Berlo did well in his first game as captain.
