Members of the Toronto Maple Leafs front office and coaching staff are on the same page, assistant general manager Kyle Dubas said. Jered Weaver Jersey . And its not the same page that includes the NHL standings.Despite the teams stretch of seven victories in its past nine games, Dubas said president Brendan Shanahan, general manager Dave Nonis and coach Randy Carlyle arent happy with the way the Leafs have been outshot and outplayed.Theres nobody content that weve gone 7-1-1 in this stretch, Dubas said on a conference call Thursday. Theres no one really content with it. Its trying to continue to hone in on our process and really maximize our potential as a team. This state-of-the-team address by Dubas mightve been necessary after the Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night in a game where they owed everything to backup goaltender James Reimer. Toronto was outshot 42-19 but won in a shootout almost single-handedly because of Reimer.Dubas said Thursday that no one has to be an analytics expert to recognize thats not great. Recent trends beyond that game are also troubling, like the Leafs being outshot 303-247 over this nine-game run, an average of around 34-27 a game.In the process, the Leafs have picked up 15 points and moved into the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Thats with some smoke, a few mirrors and mostly No. 1 goaltender Jonathan Bernier saving their hides.Weve managed to find a way to win, Dubas said. Weve shot the puck well, weve made the most of our opportunities, weve gotten terrific goaltending. The Leafs got off to similar starts the past two seasons before collapsing under the weight of their own struggles. In 2013 it was a Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins after a lockout-shortened 48-game season, and in 2013-14 it was an eight-game regulation losing streak that dropped them out of playoff contention.Asked about the pattern of being outshot badly in certain stretches lately, Dubas said the team has ideas about whats wrong and how to fix it but didnt want to share much more than that. Given the past couple of years, this doesnt seem to be a new problem. Its a process, Dubas said. I can tell you that within the organization that everyone whos been here has been aware of the issues that have been there, and now were just trying to all work together to correct them and move ahead. One thing the Leafs need to do better, according to Dubas, is play with the lead. Evidence of how to do that came in the two games after the infamous 9-2 loss to the Nashville Predators on Nov. 18, when the Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning and Red Wings. We did a really, really good job of closing out those games when we were up and we werent overly conservative, did a good job not giving up too much to two very good teams, Dubas said. Then in the last couple games here, thats started to sag a little bit. But I think thats the one area that if we can hone in on that and just continue to find ways where we can close out games better, where we dont let our goalie close it out for us on his own, thatd be terrific.Dubass comments werent all bad. How could they be for a team that has won seven of nine? He sees the potential in the Leafs strong momentsWeve shown stretches of playing the way were fully capable of, he said. Thats probably what intrigues me the most about the group moving forward is the way that weve shown we can play. Its been there. Its a prolonged process ahead, and thats the way I look at it. Im excited to see if we can start to put that together over the long run.Note — Dubas said theres no timetable for the return of forward Leo Komarov, who has missed the past five games with a concussion. Cory Spangenberg Padres Jersey . - The Detroit Lions have 13 takeaways this season — three less than all of last season — and the defence isnt the only unit pleased with the performance. Rollie Fingers Jersey .C. Now hes squarely in the U.S. capital and helping the Washington Wizards playoff drive. John Wall scored 33 points, Gooden got 11 of his 21 in the final quarter and the Wizards overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 101-94 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday night.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, In the third period of last nights game between the Sharks and Ducks, San Joses John Scott left the bench to fight Anaheims Tim Jackman. Scott got 10 minutes for instigating and was ejected. Now Bob McKenzie tweets that Player Safety will review this under Rule 70.2 but it does not mean that Scott will get an automatic 10-game suspension. Why wouldnt this be the case? Jeffrey Grimes, Ancaster, ON Jeffrey: Let me clarify the specific rules that come into play when a player is deemed guilty of leaving the players bench for the purpose of starting an altercation. Rule 70.1 states that no player may leave the players or penalty bench at any time during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation. The first or second player from either or both teams who leaves the players or penalty bench under this rule is to be assessed a game misconduct penalty (70.6). Additionally, (70.10) the first player from either or both teams to leave the players or penalty bench illegally is to be suspended without pay for the next ten (10) games; the second player from either or both teams shall be suspended for the next five (5) games. The team(s) shall be fined ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for the first instance and increased by five thousand ($5,000) for each subsequent occurrence over the next following three year period. All players, as well as the first and second players who leave the bench illegally shall be subjected to an automatic fine in the amount equal to the maximum permitted under the collective bargaining agreement. The Coach(es) of the team(s) whose player(s) left the players bench(es) illegally during an altercation shall be suspended, pending a review by the Commissioner and fined a maximum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000). For all suspensions imposed on players under this rule, the Club shall pay to the League a sum equal to the pro-rata of that players salary covered by the suspension (Players salary divided by number of days in the regular season multiplied by number of games suspended). I provide you with all these potential consequences once a player(s) deemed in violation of Rule 70 is so that you fully appreciated the severity of the punishment that can be doled out. Rule 70.2, however provides a caveat (or escape clause if you will) which provides for a player who has entered the game while play is in progress from his own plaayers bench or legally from the penalty bench (penalty time has expired) who starts an altercation may be subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 28 (Supplementary Discipline). Yangervis Solarte Jersey. That could include additional fines and/or suspensions for any offense committed during the course of the game, whether or not the offense was penalized by the Referee. Even though Captain Obvious would tell you that John Scott came onto the ice for the clear purpose of starting an altercation with Tim Jackman, in retribution for Jackmans prior assault on Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Scott entered the game by virtue of a legal line change for teammate Matt Nieto. The fact that Scott was legally entitled to be on the ice pretty much exempts him from the 10-game suspension. There are a number of precedents set in similar or even more obvious player attacks from the bench. Craig Berube, current coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, once came onto the ice with play in progress on a legal line change but forgot his gloves and stick on the players bench! With play moving up ice in the opposite direction Chief went against the flow and attacked an opponent that had just delivered a questionable hit on one of Berubes teammates. Referee Bill McCreary assessed the game misconduct which carried the automatic 10 game suspension for leaving the players bench for the purpose of starting an altercation. The penalty and suspension was subsequently rescinded because it was determined that Berube was entitled to be on the ice by virtue of a legal line change. I also recall seeing Chris Pronger, as a member of the St. Louis Blues at the time, jump off his players bench without his gloves and pound an opponent into submission who was involved in a confrontation with another Blues player directly in front of the bench. A very liberal and generous interpretation of a legal line change was granted to Pronger on the play to escape suspension. Now, as a new member of the Player Safety Committee, perhaps Chris will call upon his firsthand experience in assessing John Scotts actions in the game last night? Rule 28 was invoked to suspend Ryan Clowe for two games when he came onto the ice and started an altercation but I dont see that happening for John Scotts actions. Scott didnt sucker punch or blatantly attack Jackman. Instead Scott followed somewhat similar rules of engagement that Jackman initiated against the big Shark player in their fight just two minutes and 16 seconds into the game. Anything more than a fine would deviate from existing precedent. Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (3) – He had a solid first period again as he was composed and very confident in net. Carl Hagelins goal was a good shot above the glove which broke a 145 minute shutout streak for Fleury. He made the big save on Rick Nash during a two on one break look easy. The second goal was a bit of a softie as it squeaked through his glove shortside. Fleury was solid overall, but it was a slow night, only facing 15 shots. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) – There was slight interference on the first goal by Evgeni Malkin as he was late to get down and the puck went underneath his left pad. Lundqvist had a huge save on Beau Bennett on the backdoor with a great reaction off the post. He also had a big left pad save on Malkin and a nice redirection save on Sidney Crosby in the second. He was hung out to dry in the third and didnt get much help as he faced big chances by Chris Kunitz and Brandon Sutter. His body language looks frustrated. BARCELONA, Spain -- Gareth Bale scored three goals and set up a fourth to make sure Real Madrid didnt miss injured star Cristiano Ronaldo as it cruised to a 4-0 win over Valladolid in the Spanish league on Saturday. With Ronaldo out nursing a hurt hamstring for a second straight game, Bale took up the scoring duties in the 32nd minute then found Karim Benzema to make it 2-0 four minutes later. Bale got his second in the 64th and third in the 89th against Valladolids bewildered defence to give him five goals since Ronaldo was sidelined. Madrids fifth league win in a row following its loss at Barcelona lifted it three points from the defending champions and Atletico Madrid, which won 2-0 at Elche on goals by Diego Costa and Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion. Barcelona can reclaim sole possession of the league lead from Atletico at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Bale, who joined Madrid on a world record 100 million euros transfer from Tottenham this summer, showed with his first hat trick for Madrid that he has certainly shaken off his injury problems from earlier this season. "His adjustment period is over," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said about Bale. "He has confidence, he is important to the team, and he played very well." Bale has seven goals in league play, leaving him third for Madrid behind Benzemas eight and Ronaldos 17, which lead the league. Bale also has scored twice in the Champions League. Marcelo, however, made it clear who Madrids No. 1 is. "Gareth is a great player but you cant compare him with Cristiano because Cristiano is above all the rest," Marcelo said. Also, Celta Vigo came back to beat Almeria 3-1 for its first home victory at Balaidos Stadium in eight attempts this season under first-year manager Luis Enrique. With Ronaldo unavailable, Angel Di Maria started and wasted little time in controlling a clearance outside the area before rattling the bar with a left-footed shot on either side of two Sergio Ramos headers that sailed high. The overmatched Vallladolid rarely managed to shift the action out of its area, and Bale found himself in perfect position to nod in a rebound of Di Marias curling effort that goalie Diego Marino parried directly to the Wales winger.dddddddddddd Bale then picked out Benzema with a pinpoint cross to thump the ball beyond Marino and put the result beyond doubt before halftime. Bale was again aided by a poor clearance for Madrids third. This time it was defender Jesus Rueda, who knocked Marcelos cross back for Bale to fire home. But Bale wasnt finished and he started and finished off a late counterattack by charging forward to tap in Marcelos low cross. With Elche hanging tough, Atletico coach Diego Simeone sent on Raul Garcia and Adrian Lopez and the changes paid off to earn Atleticos 17th win in all competitions to go with four draws and just one loss. Atletico broke through seconds after Garcia replaced David Villa. Koke pounced on a rebound from Garcias shot that Manuel Herrera saved but failed to clear, leaving the Elche goalkeeper strewn on the turf with defender Alberto Botia and Diego Costa after they collided. Diego Costa secured the three points in the 74th by scoring from Lopezs perfectly placed chipped pass. It was Diego Costas 15th league goal this season, the second highest tally in the competition after Ronaldo. "The entrance of Raul Garcia and Adrian (Lopez) gave us two bursts of creativity when the game had gotten bogged down," Simeone said. "We have to keep going forward this way and remain realistic. I know its a good moment for Atleticos fans, but we are focusing on one game at a time." Celtas much-needed win lifted it three points from the relegation zone, while Almeria stayed among the bottom three. After Jesus "Suso" Fernandez opened for Almeria, Fabian Orellano scored one goal and set up another to lead the fightback. Real Sociedad visited Espanyol later. New world chess champion Magnus Carlsen took the honorary kickoff at Madrids Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. TORONTO - Toronto FC went 1-2-2 during an injury-plagued Florida training camp, coming home to a frozen tundra. Thiago Motta Jersey . Star striker Jermain Defoe has yet to touch down and fellow marquee signings Michael Bradley and Gilberto have been hampered by injury. Goalie Julio Cesar is on international duty with Brazil in South Africa and backup forward Bright Dike is already probably out for the season after tendon surgery. Manager Ryan Nelsen has been down three fullbacks and three strikers. Minor niggles have turned into more bothersome setbacks. Its meant extra minutes for some players and new positions for others. For an MLS franchise that has gone all-in on the transfer market in a bid to finally make the playoffs after seven seasons of failure and a woeful 51-105-66 record, there is still much work to do. The good news is Toronto has a bye this weekend when 16 clubs kick off the 2014 season. Toronto opens March 15 in Seattle. "We planned that brilliantly," Nelsen said dryly after practice Tuesday under the bubble at the teams well-appointed north Toronto training ground. Nelsen, in his second year at the helm, has managed to find some positives in the rocky pre-season. "It did expose our weaknesses," he said. "You always get exposed at some part of the season, whether its injuries or suspensions or international call-ups or something like that." "We know what we have, we know what we need to be and where we need to get to," he added. "Its good to know now rather than a quarter or halfway through the season. "Well be a different animal come the 15th but in the back of my mind, its a nice thing to know moving forward." Depth is an issue. Toronto can field an impressive starting 11 but pre-season has already shown that the wrong combination of injuries at the wrong position can cause havoc. The team remains very much a work in progress. Even MLSsoccer.com, which ranked TFC 17th out of 19 teams in its weekly "power rankings," has Toronto 14th in its pre-season list. "Were not all aboard the bandwagon just yet," said the website. Nelsen, whose team went 6-17-11 last season, says he doesnt concern himself with "outside voices." But the former New Zealand international knows that whipping up a gourmet meal is more than just buying the right ingredients. "Just because you make some changes, its not like a light switch. It does take time," he said. "Thats the beauty of sport. "But in saying that we fully expect to get where we want to be. And if you think the expectations are high outside, theyre probably higher inside. But we know its hard and we know its a journey to get to." The pre-season injury list has included forwards Gilberto (quadricep) and Dike (tendon), midfielders Jonathan Osorio (flu) and Daniel Lovitz (knee) and fullbacks Mark Bloom (quadricep), Bradley Orr (calf) and Justin Morrow (hip). Bradley, who withdrew from the U.S squad to face Ukraine in Cyprus, is nursing a minor foot issue. More worrying for Nelsen is the fact that the injuries to Bloom and Orr started as minor issues but got worse. "Well definitely be addressing it," Nelsen said. "You always get niggles and you always get injuries but theyre re-injuries. When you re-do an injury, its major cause for concern." Nelsen expects everyone to be ready for the season. Defoe, the former Tottenham star, is expected to join the team after Wednesdays England friendly against Denmark. "As soon as he plays the game for England, hell be on a plane over," said Nelsen. Still, that means a longer road for team chemistry. Although, unlike past off-seasons, Torontos transaction list has been relatively short and very select. Bradley, Defoe, Gilberto, Cesar, Morrow, Jackson, Orr, and veteran midfielder Dwayne De Rosario are all targeted as starters. The injuries at fullback have meant rookie centre back Nick Hagglund has been shifted to an emergency right back. "Couldnt be more happy with Nick," said Nelsen. Angelo Ogbonna Jersey . During the furious first few hours of free agency Tuesday, the team agreed to terms with strong safety Donte Whitner, a Cleveland native who cant wait to play in his hometown. Giorgio Chiellini Italy Jersey .J. - New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara left Monday nights game against the Indianapolis Colts with a torn biceps. SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich admitted he is getting antsy for a loss. Hell have to wait. Marco Belinelli scored 18 points and San Antonio never trailed after its opening possession, extending its winning streak to 17 games with a 96-80 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday night. The Spurs once again used fluid passing and tireless player movement to overwhelm an opponent. San Antonio finished with 24 assists while going 37 for 78 from the field in snapping New Orleans five-game winning streak. "They move around a lot, and run their sets hard," Pelicans guard Brian Roberts said. "Whatever theyre running, they are moving constantly. It puts pressure on a defence to play 24 seconds worth." Roberts scored 18 points, Austin Rivers added 16 points, Tyreke Evans had 11 points and Al-Farouq Aminu had eight points and 10 rebounds for New Orleans (32-41). Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobili scored 15 points each, Patty Mills added 13 and Tim Duncan had 12 points and eight rebounds. San Antonio (57-16) extended its lead to 3 1/2 games over Oklahoma City (53-19) for the leagues best record. In addition to winning its last 17, the Spurs have won 20 of 21 and have not lost since falling 106-85 to the Phoenix Suns on Feb. 21. "It is sweet to be a part of that," Ginobili said. "It is not something that happens very often because it is a long spread of game, a month or two. Here or there you have a bad game or the opponent has a bad one, but a lot of things have combined for us to have this type of streak. We played really well and we are healthy." New Orleans was without Anthony Davis, its leading scorer and rebounder. Davis injured his left ankle 4 minutes into the Pelicans victory over Utah on Friday night. "Its a joint/soft tissue injury right now," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "He did it in his normal routine. Hes listed as day to day. Well see how he feels tomorrow." Williams said the Pelicans would have had a tough task even with Davis and the Spurs showed why early. "They jumped oon us," Evans said. Angelo Ogbonna Italy Jersey. "They just moved the ball hit shots and we couldnt make a shot." San Antonio opened the game on a 23-6 run, with Belinelli picked up where he left off Friday night. He was 4 for 5 on 3-pointers against New Orleans after going 6 for 9 on 3-pointers Friday while scoring a game-high 27 points in a 133-102 victory in Denver. "Hes been really steady for us and he plays a great all-around game," Popovich said. Belinelli made his first two 3-pointers against the Pelicans after opening with a 15-foot jumper off an assist from Duncan. Belinellis first 3-pointer with 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter gave San Antonio a 16-4 lead. The Spurs would never lead by less than 10 points the rest of the way. After Alexis Ajinca hit a 17-foot jumper on the games opening possession, New Orleans did not score again until Greg Stiemsmas dunk with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter. The three-minute drought was followed by another three-minute drought. "We couldnt finish in the paint tonight," Williams said. "We were 18 for 48 in the paint. Thats a bad number for us. Were a team that usually is high when it comes to points in the paint." Rivers layup with 30.9 seconds pulled New Orleans within 69-59 with 30.9 seconds left in the third quarter, but Belinelli hit back-to-back 3s to fuel a 12-3 run and San Antonio reasserted its control. San Antonio travels to Indiana to play the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers on Monday. NOTES: Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson sat courtside during the game cheering the Spurs. Mickelson withdrew Saturday from the third round of the Valero Texas Open after injuring an oblique muscle. "I pulled a muscle on my downswing trying to hit the ball hard on the second hole (his 11th)," Mickelson said in a statement. "It just killed and it wouldnt subside for 10 or 12 seconds." ... SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Dalton Pompey Blue Jays Jersey . -- Jean Mar Sanchez hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, and Edgardo Rosales and Juan Crisp combined on a one-hitter to help Aguadulce, Panama, stay alive at the Little League World Series with a 12-0 win over Canada on Monday. Panama will face Taiwan in an elimination game Tuesday, while the Canadian representatives from Ottawa were eliminated. Rosales struck out four in 2 2-3 innings, while Crisp struck out two in 1 1-3 innings of relief. Panama scored six times in both the second and third innings. Rosales started the scoring with a solo homer before Rafael Eysseric added a two-run triple. Sanchez knocked home a run with a single and Crisp added a two-run single in the second. Carmelo Cruz had an RBI walk, Jean Cornejo hit a two-run double and Sanchez homered in the third. Jack Walsh had the lone hit for Canada. Yellow Paul Molitor Jersey . Siddikur, who led on all four days and took a four-stroke lead going into the final day, bogeyed four out of six holes starting at the sixth and continued a forgettable last round in which he returned a three-over 75 to finish with a 14-under 274. Aaron Sanchez Blue Jays Jersey . -- The Denver Broncos are shuffling their offensive line this off-season and Orlando Franklin provided some insight into their plans Monday by tweeting that hes moving from right tackle to left guard. The Indiana Pacers continue at the top of the TSN.ca NBA Power Rankings, ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who have climbed into second spot. Among the bigger movers this week, the Los Angeles Clippers, 10-3 since Chris Paul was injured, have returned to the Top 10, going from 11 to seven. The Chicago Bulls are playing a similar tune, if not quite as impressively, without their star point guard, Derrick Rose. An 11-4 record in the past 15 games sees the Bulls reach 13, up from 16 a week ago. There is a decided level of mediocrity in the game of the Charlotte Bobcats, but they are 5-4 in the past nine games and have gone from 23 to 19 this week. A three-game winning streak helped the New Orleans Pelicans move from 25 to 21. HHeading the wrong way, the San Antonio Spurs continue to get ravaged by injuries -- Manu Ginobili is the latest -- and theyve dropped from seven to 10. Marcus Stroman Jersey. Injuries also leave the Atlanta Hawks short up front, and they fell from 12 to 15. The biggest crash belongs to the Sacramento Kings, who have lost five straight and have their star centre, DeMarcus Cousins, sidelined; as a result, they plummeted from 19 to 27. The Toronto Raptors continue to push into the Top 10, matching their season-high ranking of nine after winning four of five. MOSCOW - Russia will cut the budget for hosting the 2018 World Cup as part of plans to slash state expenditure while recession looms, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said on Thursday. Glenn Hubbard Athletics Jersey .The Russian government is cutting its spending by 10 per cent across the board after the central bank predicted last month that the economy could contract 4.5 to 4.7 per cent this year, under pressure from low oil prices and international sanctions.Mutko, also a FIFA executive committee member, said in comments reported by the Tass news agency that World Cup stadiums and associated infrastructure would be exempt from the cuts. However, various organizational issues and subsidies to the organizing committee would be cut, he said, along with spending related to the draw ceremony.Mutko did not provide specific figures, but suggested the cuts would also apply to the non-exempt areas of World Cup spending. This month, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he had been assured by President Vladimir Putin that economic problems would not affect the tournament, and FIFA told The Associated Press it was not worried by Mutkos announcement of cuts.We are not concerned that this will have any impact on the delivery of general infrastructure required for a successful staging of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, FIFA spokesman Olegs Sokols said in emailed comments. In a statement issued to the AP, the organizing committee said, This rationalization of federal funding will not affect key infrastructure essential for staging the tournament, like stadiums, training sites, and team base camps, public transportation, IT infrastructure, and safety and security measures.Russia has already cut the capacity of two of its 12 World Cup stadiums from 45,000 to 35,000, citing financial and legacy reasons, but Mutko ruled out further shrinking of stadiums to save money, saying FIFA was unwilling to lose any more ticket revenue from hosting games in front of fewer fans.FIFA wont give us any more concessions, and all the stadiums should be 45,000-capacity, he said. The ticketing program has started, its economics, its FIFAs earnings. The fact that they lowered two of the stadiums to 35,000 people for us; according to their projections, they already lost $60 million.Mutko said the Industry and Trade Ministry was tasked with gathering World Cup contractors for meetings at which they were encouraged to lower the price of concrete for tournament-related projects.According to government figures before Mutkos comments on Thursday, more than half of Russias projected $9.6 billion World Cup spending will come from the federal government budget, with much of the remaining sum paid for by Russian regional authorities and state-owned companies. At previous World Cups, FIFA has occasionally picked up the tab when the host nations government has been unable or unwilling to fund certain aspects of the preparation. In the run-up to last years tournament in Brazil, for example, FIFA covered a reported fee of $20 million to provide generators to power broadcast facilities. Billy Butler Athletics Jersey . ATLANTA -- Paul Goldschmidt doesnt often stand and stare at his homers. This time he had to look, just to make sure his drive stayed fair. He liked what he saw. Wade Miley earned his first win since early May, Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Atlanta 3-1 on Sunday to end the Braves nine-game winning streak. Goldschmidt ripped an inside pitch from Alex Wood toward the left-field seats in the third inning. He said he immediately figured it had home run distance. He was just hoping the ball would stay fair, and it hit the foul pole for his 16th homer. "I wasnt sure," Goldschmidt said. "I knew it probably had the distance but it started fair and was going, so that was one of the few times I was watching to see what was going to happen. I saw it hit the pole and come down. I was pretty happy." Miley (4-6) allowed one run on five hits and one walk in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out eight. The left-hander was 0-3 in his previous nine starts and had not won since beating the White Sox on May 10. The win snapped his streak of five straight no-decisions. Miley shrugged when asked if he was relieved to finally get his fourth win. "You really cant control that," he said. "Youve just got to go out and try to give your team a chance to win. Thats the plan. You dont go out to try to get wins, you just try to get quality innings and get your offence on the field and we were able to do that and able to score enough runs today." Wood (6-7) allowed two runs on only three hits and three walks in seven innings. B.J. Upton was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts to end his career-best 11-game hitting streak for NL East-leading Atlanta. The loss kept the Braves from sweeping their third straight series. "We had a great run, had a great homestand," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. Before the game, the Diamondbacks traded right-hander Brandon McCarthy and cash to the Yankees forr left-hander Vidal Nuno. Trevor Plouffe Jersey. Pinch-hitter Nick Evans run-scoring double off Luis Avilan in the ninth pushed Arizonas lead to two. Evans drove in Martin Prado, who singled off Anthony Varvaro and stole second base. Addison Reed gave up a leadoff single to Tommy La Stella in the ninth before striking out Christian Bethancourt. Reed wrapped up his 20th save when Ryan Doumit hit into a double play. Arizona right-hander Brad Ziegler gave up a leadoff single to Andrelton Simmons in the eighth. With one out, Ziegler walked Justin Upton, and the runners advanced on Jason Heywards groundout. Ziegler struck out Chris Johnson to end the inning. Walks hurt both starting pitchers. Wood issued a walk to Miley to open the third inning before Goldschmidts two-out homer gave the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead. Goldschmidt, who had an infield single in the first, had two of Arizonas three hits off Wood. "Thats baseball for you," Wood said. "You go into the game telling yourself that theres one guy you dont want to let beat you and then he ends up beating you." Miley walked Justin Upton to open the fourth. He scored from second on Johnsons single up the middle. Miley didnt allow another hit until Bethancourt singled with two outs in the seventh. Evan Marshall got the final out of the inning after walking pinch-hitter Dan Uggla. Montravius Adams Jersey . -- The Detroit Lions made it crystal clear to Golden Tate that he was their top target in free agency.HOUSTON -- Houston running back Arian Foster was removed from the physically unable to perform list Wednesday and practiced with the Texans for the first time since May. Foster strained his right calf in an off-season practice in late May and struggled with a sore back after recovering from that injury. "Its really important," coach Gary Kubiak said. "Hes been working, its not like hes been standing around. Hes been trying to get all that soreness out and he felt really good the last two days. I think we took a big step forward." Kubiak thought that Foster would have returned to practice sooner than he did, but he understood why he was out as long as he was. "I was watching him work and watching what he was going though so I felt confident that we were close and ready to go," Kubiak said. "I also understand how important it was that they did it at the right time. The key is Arian felt good about it today and thats the most important thing." Foster rushed for 1,424 yards and 15 touchdowns last year for his third straight 1,200-yard season. Kubiak doesnt expect Foster to play Sunday against the Saints and he likely wont play in Houstons final preseason game on Aug. 29 at Dallas. But that wont keep him from being ready for Houstons opener at San Diego on Sept. 9. "I dont think its a must that he carry the ball in preseason to be ready for San Diego," Kubiak said. Foster wasnt sure if hed see preseason action, but didnt sound like he was angling to play before the opener. "Im not a huge fan of preseason," he said. "I feel like Ill be ready for Sept. 9 without (it). Ive just got to get myself acclimated." He saaid it was a bit frustrating to deal with his back situation after recovering from the calf injury, but he was never concerned that the problems would bleed into the regular season. Kevin King Youth Jersey. "I know my body and I knew it wasnt a huge issue," he said. "I had to give it time." The Texans have relied on Ben Tate and a group of mostly rookie running backs while Foster was injured. Quarterback Matt Schaub said it was a boost to see Foster on the field on Wednesday. "It was great to see him back out there and see his explosiveness," Schaub said. "After all his rehab he looked pretty fresh. It was great to have him back in the huddle and get another piece of the puzzle back." Foster is excited about the possibilities for the offence with the new pieces they added in the off-season led by receiver DeAndre Hopkins, chosen in the first-round of this years draft. "Weve got all the potential in the world, weve just got to go execute," Foster said. "Obviously we have a bunch of talent here and its always fun to watch." Foster went through some changes in his life during the off-season, with he and his wife welcoming their first son. He said he mostly just sleeps and eats now, but he cant wait for him to get old enough to run around and play. But hes hoping that his boy doesnt follow in his footsteps in a few years, saying an emphatic "no" when asked about the possibility of him playing football one day. "If he wants to its cool," Foster said. "I love the game and everything but this hurts. Its a lot of work. Let daddy put in the work so you can go study art or something." The Vancouver Canucks, who struggled into the Olympic break, will try to restart their season on a positive note as they host The St. Danny Williams Jersey . Louis Blues The Canucks may have needed the break more than any team as they went into the hiatus having lost seven in a row, including a winless five-game road trip to close out the pre-Olympic schedule. Vancouver has lost seven in a row in regulation for the first time since Dec. 26-Jan. 6 during the 1998-99 campaign and is on its longest skid of any kind since going 0-5-3 from Jan. 9-31, 2009. The Canucks have 63 points on the season, one back of Phoenix and Dallas for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. The break did allow Henrik Sedin some additional time to heal from a rib injury that has held him to just two games since Jan. 18 and caused him to sit out the Olympics. "Henrik is landing this morning," head coach John Tortorella told reporters on Wednesday morning. "We hope hell play tonight." However, forward Ryan Kesler wont play tonight due to a hand injury suffered while blocking a shot for Team USA on Feb. 15. He did not miss time during the Olympics, but had an MRI on Monday and is day-to-day. Vancouver recalled center Kellan Lain from the American Hockey League on Monday. Eddie Lack will get the start in goal. Regardless, the Canucks will look to get on track while playing their next three as the home team. That includes March 2 in the Heritage Classic versus Ottawa to be played at BC Place, which features a retractable roof. The Canucks have won two prior meetings with the Blues this season and are 5-0-2 in the last seven encounters overall. Vancouver also is 3-0-1 in its past four versus St. Louis at home. T.J. Oshie had one of the more memorable experiences during the Winter Olympics, even if the American was unable to get his country a medal. Oshie was part of a Team USA squad that failed to medal in Sochi, though the 27-year-old was briefly the talk of the Olympics after he scored four times during an eight-round shootout to help lift the U.S. to a win over Russia during group play. The forward became a media sensation and U.S. hero for his clutch performance, though he fizzled out like the rest of Team USA, which failed to beat Canada in the semifinals before falling in defeat to Finland in the bronze medal game. "It was pretty crazy after that shootout. Its all a little bitter now that we get back and have nothing to show for it, but it was a pretty cool couple of days after that seeing some of my family on some major TV shows and stuff like that," said Oshie. The Blues do return a number of players who collected medals in Sochi, including gold medal-winning defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester of Team Canada as well as forwards Alexander Steen and Patrik Berglund, who picked up silver with Sweden. Steen continued his solid campaign that has seen him score a career-high 28 goals through just 46 games on the season. St. Louis comes out of the break having gone 3-0-1 in its previous four while winning seven of its last 10. The Blues are even with the idle Chicago Blackhawks for the top spot in the Central standings with 84 points, three behind the Anaheim Ducks for the most in the NHL. The Blues play their next three on the road looking to maintain that success, something Oshie believes his club can do. "I think so. Weve got some guys coming off some pretty big highs, getting a gold and silver medal, and weve got some other guys like myself and (forward David) Backes that are fired up we didnt get anything," Oshie said. "I feel like after big losses like that, it inspires you to work harder. Its always easy coming back to this group of guys." Floundering in the English Premier League, United has delivered better performances in Europe this season and stunned Bayern by taking the lead against the run of play through Nemanja Vidics header in the 58th minute. You can see how much it means to people, said Piszczek, who plays club football for German side Borussia Dortmund. We had a little bit of luck, thats why we won. We took our chances. We had two or three, and we scored two goals. Germany had a lot of chances and they didnt take them. The Polish-born Lukas Podolski came closest for Germany, but struck the crossbar in the 80th, three minutes after coming on a substitute, and there was still time for Mario Goetze to blaze over and Toni Kroos to shoot narrowly over from a free kick, albeit after Mila sealed the result.I cant fault the team, but perhaps we should have made more of our chances, Germany coach Joachim Loew said.Poland handed Germany its first defeat after 18 competitive games, and its first loss in qualifying after 33 matches since a 3-0 loss at home to the Czech Republic in October 2007.Earlier, Robbie Keane scored a hat trick in a 13-minute span to help Group D rival Ireland to a 7-0 rout of Gibraltar in Dublin, and Scotland scraped a 1-0 wiin over Georgia in Glasgow thanks to Akaki Khubutias first-half own goal. Matt Besler Jersey. After two games, Poland and Ireland lead the group with maximum points, with Germany and Scotland behind on three. Germany hosts Ireland in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday, while Poland plays Scotland in Warsaw.Loew surprised many by handing Karim Bellarabi his debut, and the Bayer Leverkusen winger was Germanys best attacking threat in a first half of limited chances.Polands committed start prevented the visitors from settling into the game. The best chances came before halftime as Germany found a groove. Bellarabi went close, Thomas Mueller was forced wide, Bellarabi forced a save from Wojciech Szczesny, and Mats Hummels fired over.I dont think we played a bad game. We created a lot of chances, Neuer said. The second half started slowly, until Milik capitalized on Neuers misjudgment to bring the game to life.I was too late but of course I wanted to get the ball, Neuer said. It was my mistake. But if Id stayed on the line I wouldnt have got the ball either.Goetze and Andre Schuerrle, twice, sought a response but found Szczesny equal to their efforts. Eric Durm failed to trouble the Poland goalkeeper after Mueller set him up, and was at fault for the second goal when Lewandowski got behind him and set up Milas clincher. He was perhaps badly positioned, acknowledged Loew, who said his side would seek to make amends against Ireland. After a loss you always need to show a good reaction, Loew said. NEW YORK -- Braves pitchers are thankful Andrelton Simmons is their shortstop and not another powerful pitching arm. Derek Rivers Jersey . The 24-year old would not sign with Atlanta in 2010 unless the Braves allowed him to remain in the infield. With the potential tying run on third base in the eighth inning Wednesday night, he ranged onto the outfield grass to snag Travis dArnauds grounder, then made a one-hop throw to first baseman Freddie Freeman. That preserved the lead as the Braves beat the New York Mets 3-2 behind Julio Teherans strong start to stop a three-game losing streak. "Two out, man on third, not only does he make the play, but he makes an accurate throw to first base," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Today, Teheran should take him out to dinner because he saved him the win." Teheran (13-9) gave up three hits in 6 1-3 innings, struck out four and walked two. "My fastball was working and I threw my changeup more," he said. "I think thats how I got them off-balance." Jason Heyward connected on Zack Wheelers third pitch of the game for his 11th homer of the season. After Wilmer Flores home run tied the game in the second, the Braves went ahead for good in the third when Phil Gosselin reached on a bunt single, Freddie Freeman doubled, Justin Upton hit a broken-bat RBI groundout and shortstop Ruben Tejada allowed Evan Gattis two-out bouncer to pop out of his glove for a run-scoring error. "Justins at-bat was huge," Heyward said. "It was a broken bat and scored the go-ahead run. When you put the ball in play, it puts pressure on the defence. And then when Gattis put the ball in play, they made an error and it led to another run." Craig Kimbrel allowed Eric Campbells leadoff single in the ninth and walked Matt den Dekker. After Flores sacrificed, Gosselin threw out Campbell at the plate on Tejadas grounder to third and pinch-hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis flied hit a game-ending flyout. Kimbrel got his 39th save in 43 chances. Juan Lagares had an RBI single in the eighth off Jordan Walden before Lucas Duda grounded into a double play. Then came Simmons sterling throw. "It looks like he has no chance, and then in the last second, he just reaches for it and throws it," dArnaud said. "What a great play." Wheeler (9-9) gave up three runs -- two earned -- four hits and three walks in seven innings with seven strikeouts. He had been 6-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 10 starts since losing to Oakland on June 25. Atlanta began the night 1 1/2 games behind San Francisco for the second NL wild card. The right-hander is recovering from June surgery to repair a fractured elbow. ... 3B Chris Johnson was given the day off. Mets manager Terry Collins said the team will be without Black for a couple of days and said Edgin is dealing with a bone spur-like issue. ... 2B Daniel Murphy (calf) and David Wright (neck) remained out of the lineup; Wright took a few swings in the indoor batting cages prior to the game. "Todays the day where he needs to do some stuff and to see how he comes out of it," Collins said. Kevin Bieksa scored his second of the night at 2:15 of overtime as the Canucks fought back after blowing two separate two-goal leads to defeat the Coyotes 5-4. The defenceman collected his own rebound and chipped his fourth of the season over Phoenix goalie Mike Smith while falling to the ice, capping a game where Coyotes forward Antoine Vermette was credited with a hat trick — even though he only shot one puck into Vancouvers net himself. "It was a strange game on both sides. It was bizarre," said Canucks assistant coach Mike Sullivan. "I think there might have been one goal that was actually shot in the net. It seemed like everything was a deflection off a skate, off a stick, off something, so it was just one of those games for both sides." Chris Higgins had a goal and two assists for Vancouver (27-17-9), while Zac Dalpe added a goal and an assist. Jannik Hansen also scored for the Canucks, his first in 11 games. Vancouver, which came in having scored just eight times in its last seven games, holds down the first wild card position in the Western Conference and is just a point back of the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division. "It wasnt your typical game. Weve been struggling to score goals lately, so lets take some positive out of it. We put five in, some guys got on the scoresheet and we found a way to win when it came down to it," said Bieksa, who also had an assist. "We needed the two points. We were up a couple goals a few times and they came back and we stayed resilient and found a way to win." Added Higgins: "Kind of a sloppy game and with the weird goals it was kind of a strange game. Its nice to be on the winning side of those games and nice to score a bunch of goals — its been tough to come by recently." Roberto Luongo, who was shaky at times and even directed one of Vermettes goals over the line himself, made 29 saves for the Canucks. On the whole, it was a night to forget for both Luongo and Smith as two of the three goalies heading to next months Winter Olympics for Canada fought the puck and looked lost in the crease at times. "It was definitely a weird one," said Luongo. "It was one of those games where it felt like the puck was bouncing in from everywhere. The good thing is we got the win." Shane Doan chipped in with a goal and an assist for Phoenix (24-18-10), which got 20 stops from Smith as the Coyotes picked up a point but still sit four back of the Minnesota Wild for eighth in the West and five back of Vancouver. "Were going to have to be better than we are right now," said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett. "We play stretches well but make critical errors at the wrong time and those have to be cleaned up if we are going to be a playoff team. Deatrich Wise Jr. Youth Jersey. " After a wild finish to the second period, Doan tied the game 4-4 on a breakaway at 5:24 of the third. The Coyotes captain moved in on Luongo and lost control of his deke but still saw the puck squeak through the five-hole for his 15th of the season. Vancouver was handed a power play right at the end of regulation, but the leagues 28th-ranked unit failed to convert in overtime before Bieksa won it. The Canucks power play came into Sunday on a dreadful 2-for-30 run over the last eight games and rarely looked dangerous against the Coyotes in four failed attempts. "When a power play struggles it can take on a life of its own," said Sullivan, who is running the Canucks bench in place of the suspended John Tortorella. "Now not only are you trying to coach the Xs and Os of the strategy of the power play, but you are coaching the mindset and a fragile mindset." Down 2-1 in the second, the Coyotes tied it while shorthanded against that feeble power play. Canucks forward Ryan Kesler tried to slap the puck off Vermettes stick in front of Luongo, only to see it carom into the Vancouver net to tie the score at 9:07. The goal was Vermettes second of the night and 17th of the season. The Canucks had just 10 shots in total when Higgins restored Vancouvers lead at even strength by deflecting a shot from the point past Smith for his 14th of the season, and second in as many games, at 16:59. Dalpe then followed up his own rebound off the rush to score his third and stretch the Canucks lead to 4-2 just 42 seconds later. That two-goal lead would be short-lived as Vermette completed his second hat trick of the season — and third of his career — with 54.5 seconds remaining in the period with a shot from in close as the Coyotes broke through against the Canucks stingy penalty kill, which came in ranked second overall. Vermette now has six goals in his last six games, and three short-handed goals in his last four. "Free hat trick right there," Luongo said with a laugh. "At least he buried the last one to make it at least somewhat justifiable. It was just one of those nights where it felt like the puck was finding ways in." Vermette was unapologetic when it came to his good fortune. "You get good chances and the puck doesnt go in for you," he said. "I thought it was a good sign, weve been talking about those bounces lately. Its a sign that things are going to turn around." The Canucks — who were still without injured forwards Henrik Sedin and Mike Santorelli because of upper-body injuries — beat Smith twice in a 44-second span midway through first period as both Bieksa and Hansen ended lengthy droughts. Bieksa opened the scoring at 10:31 on a shot through traffic to pick up his first goal in nine games. The defencemans third of the season was also his first point in the last eight contests and came moments after a failed Vancouver power play. (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees are running out of time. Chad Marshall Jersey . The Yankees try to put the brakes on a four-game losing streak and keep their fading postseason hopes alive on Wednesday when they continue a three-game series versus the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Toronto added to New Yorks woes on Wednesday, as R.A. Dickey prevailed in a pitchers duel with Andy Pettitte, and the Blue Jays eked out a 2-0 victory. Dickey (13-12) yielded just four hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven scoreless innings. Casey Janssen struck out the side in the ninth to nail down his 31st save. "It would be nice to continue to grow. These are important games, for me in particular. We are going to be competing next year, it is important to start getting it right now," said Dickey. The setback dropped New York 3 1/2 games back in the American League wild card race, where Tampa Bay and Texas currently hold the top two spots after the Rangers defeated the Rays on Tuesday. "Were getting to where we cant lose much more," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Pettitte (10-10) gave the Yankees a chance by firing 6 2/3 effective innings, with the veterans lone mistake a solo homer to Colby Rasmus in the bottom of the fourth. Rajai Davis added a solo shot later on and finished 2-for-4 in the win, only the Blue Jays second in their last seven overall games. Getting the call for the Yankees on Wednesday will be righty Phil Hughes, who is just 4-13 on the season with a 5.07 ERA. Hughes returned to the rotation and started against Baltimore on Thursday, but lasted just three-plus innings despite giving up a run and three hits in his teams 6-5 win. "After having not pitched a lot in the last couple of weeks, command was my biggest concern," Hughes said on Thursday. "It was pretty good. I didnt walk anybody and I was throwing a lot of strikes, so I was happy with that." Hughes is 5-6 lifetime versus the Jays with a 4.84 ERA. Toronto, meanwhile, will counter with lefty J.A. Happ, who has lost four of his last five starts. Happs latest setback came on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels, as he allowed four runs (3 earned) and six hits in 4 1/3 innings, dropping him to 4-6 to go along with a 5.15 ERA. "Im just trying to prove to myself more than anything," Happ said. "You want to keep the team in the game and you want to have respect. Im thinking about the team more than Im thinking about anybody else analyzing me. I hope to go out and finish strong, thats for sure." Happs struggles could continue on Wednesday, as Toronto has lost his last six starts at home. Hes also 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against the Yankees this season. Despite Tuesdays loss, New York has won 13 of its 17 meetings with the Jays this season. It wasnt for the end of the season, but because you could give yourself a full month of recovery compared to two-and-a-half weeks, said Mitchell. Told that Julien thought the officials were doing a wonderful job, Montreal coach Michel Therrien roared with laughter. "Im sure he said that," he added between chuckles.
