As Lutz Bethge presides over a meeting at Montblanc's atelier in Hamburg, Germany, last week, he is in fact 724 miles away from where the luxury goods group took its name, the highest peak in Europe: Mont Blanc in the Alps.
The brand was created in 1907 by a Hamburg banker and two engineers who, after seeing the latest technology for fountain pens in Britain and France, decided to create their own version in Hamburg. But what future is there for a business selling pens in a world of computers and mobile phone technology? How can a 104 year old pen maker, which still makes its pens by hand in a Hamburg factory, survive?
Mr Bethge says: "Computers rule our lives but letters written by hand show the recipient how important they are. They are personal and show you have given one of the most important things of today time."
Hamburg born Mr Bethge, who has been with the company since 1990, is so passionate about his products that he knows every detail of the process of creating them. "Our brand stands for power, for success, but also for education and culture. The person with a Montblanc writing instrument has a successful and cultural lifestyle." And at a 500 entry point rising to close to 20,000, these fountains and roller balls are more than just pens. They are indeed, as Mr Bethge says, "writing instruments".
At the atelier in Hamburg a tour around the network of rooms reveals that more than 600 people make its products. Painstakingly engraving, welding, shaving and bending the delicate gold and precious metals in a total of 35 different steps to create the fine nibs for each fountain pen sold across the world.
But Mr Bethge's plan for the business goes well beyond his beloved "writing instruments". Since 1995 it has diversified into leather goods, jewellery and, most importantly, watches, which could easily overtake its sales of pens.
Erwan Rambourg, luxury goods analyst at HSBC, said: "Montblanc product diversification has been quite successful. The name is still probably associated with pens. However, as Cartier started off as a jeweller and is now well known for watches, I would not rule out that at some stage that the first point of reference for Montblanc will be watches."
The business is rapidly growing in China, India and Brazil. It has established a network of 360 shops with a total of 9,000 sales outlets worldwide and plans for further growth. In China it has 100 shops in 48 cities and will by the end of the year open its biggest store yet a concept store that will host events and exhibitions in a four storey building in Beijing. Mr Bethge says: "China is our biggest market but Europe is still important. A business needs a balance of all markets. We are evenly spread. This is a benefit."
But in the current economic recession how can a company that still manufacturers products by hand compete? The company made a crucial decision for its future success in the 1970s when it stopped mass production of cheaper pens to concentrate on the high end. This decision made Montblanc what it is today.
Mr Bethge explains: "We are selling luxury goods, but we are artisans and an atelier not a mere luxury brand. When we launch new categories people know they will also be of the highest quality."

Pair sentenced to 16 years in Italy asbestos trial
Stephan Schmidheiny, the former owner of a company making Eternit fibre cement, and Jean Louis Marie Ghislain de Cartier de Marchienne, a major shareholder, were sentenced in absentia after being found guilty of causing an environmental disaster and failing to comply with safety regulations.
They were also ordered to pay damages to civil parties in a payout expected to add up to tens of millions of euros.
Hundreds of relatives of victims had waited anxiously for the verdict in a trial which was closely watched as a potential precedent around the world, and they wept, cheered and clapped when the sentence was read aloud.

Eternit went bankrupt six years before asbestos was banned in Italy in 1992.
"I have never seen such a tragedy. It affects workers and inhabitants . it continues to cause deaths and will continue to do so for who knows how long," prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello said in his closing speech in November.
The trial, which began in 2009 after a five year investigation, is the biggest of its kind against a multinational for asbestos related deaths.

With 19 touring and resident performances around the globe, in places like Las Vegas and Tokyo, the company takes in more than $1bn (600m) annually.
But make no mistake: while the clowns might be driving the car, it's canny businessmen who are running the show.
"If you have a very good artistic product it's very well, but you have to have a good business management," says Gilles Ste Croix, one of the company's co founders and its current artistic director.
'Cherished kids of Canada'It all started in 1984, in the tiny Quebec City suburb of Baie Saint Paul, when a group of stilt walkers and street performers formed a performance troupe called the Le Club des Talons Hauts (the High Heels Club).

"Now the merging of acrobatics with the different form of arts is very common, but when we started, we were almost alone out there in our style," says Mr Ste Croix.
Another crucial decision was to add permanent shows to the company's roster of touring productions.
In 1993, Mr Laliberte partnered with Las Vegas casino magnate Steve Wynn to create a permanent show called Mystere at Mr Wynn's Mirage Resort, and in 1998, the show La Nouba was inaugurated at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida.
Finally, Canada's lack of a circus culture gave the company room to experiment and explore.
To help build the brand in Europe, the company first went on tour with Switzerland's Circus Knie and staged shows throughout the region. In 1995, it sought to further open the market with a five city tour of its show Saltimbanco under a big white tent.
And then, about six months before opening night, performers come into the headquarters and begin to put it all together.

The Algoma Harvester was christened Wednesday in Lake Ontario's Hamilton Harbor in St. Catherines, Ontario.
"We have been extremely pleased with the performance of the first Equinox Class vessel," said Greg Wright, president and CEO of Algoma.
"We expect the ship to move 1 million tons per year," he said of the newest, the Harvester.
The Algoma Harvester will eventually make its way into the Port of Duluth Superior during the 2014 15 shipping season as part of its expected 10 grain and iron ore trips.
