November seems like a long time ago, doesnt it?That was when Holly Holm dethroned Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, which, as weve now come to realize, threw the entire bantamweight division into chaos. Tottenham Hotspur Jerseys For Sale .That chaos continued this past weekend, as Holm suffered her second defeat since the Rousey win -- this one at the hands of the talented (but relatively unknown) Valentina Shevchenko. Was there anything to learn from yet another upset in the womens 135-pound division? Lets take a quick look back at UFC Fight Night in Chicago.Actually, if you think about it, Holm is EXACTLY who we thought she wasYoure bound to hear many claiming the opposite. After watching Holm lose (badly) to an undersized Shevchenko, the mainstream Monday morning quarterbacks likely will chalk her up as a disappointment. Here was this physically imposing former world boxing champion, destined to take the reins of this division. Not. So. Much. That take completely forgets who Holm was one year ago. In July 2015, no one was pegging Holm as the future of the division. She was coming off a second win in the UFC, but the scouting report wasnt all that kind. Holm was raw, still learning, a bit hesitant and a complete question mark on the floor -- and definitely not ready for Rousey. The only thing we were wrong on was, of course, the part about Rousey. As it turned out, Holm was made for Rousey. That hesitancy that prevented her from really jumping off the page in her first UFC fights worked wonders against an uber-aggressive opponent. Basically, if there is one way to not fight Holm, it was how Rousey did it.So, did that one fight change who Holm was? In terms of perception, yeah. In the cage, where it matters? Not at all. This bantamweight division has been hard to handicap lately, but in the case of Holm, our original assessments were probably dead-on. She still looks very uncomfortable on the floor. Her athleticism and pace are phenomenal, but her technical savvy is still developing. To classify Holm as some crazy disappointment now, following the first two-fight skid of her combat sports career, is to essentially forget (or ignore) everything weve seen from her besides one two-round fight against Rousey back in November. Holm hasnt really changed. What we said and wrote about her did.And considering that, Holm has reached an interesting spotNot to make this all about Holm, because Shevchenko was brilliant Saturday -- but Holms next move will be the more interesting of the two. Shevchenko is in title contention, but she just lost to the current champion, Amanda Nunes, four months ago. Well see what happens, but as of right now, not many are clamoring for that rematch. What happens to Holm, though? Does she simply fall back in line against a low-ranked opponent? In reality, thats as risky of a move as any. Holms back will be against the wall in her next fight, regardless of whom its against. So, for that reason, might it actually be best to take a fight shes not supposed to win?Stay with me here. What Im suggesting is Holm, because her skills remain unpolished, is not a guaranteed win against anybody right now. She nearly lost to Raquel Pennington in her UFC debut in 2014, a matchup that strongly favored her on paper. Now shes coming off a loss against Shevchenko, who should probably be fighting at 125 pounds. If a win is not guaranteed anyway, why not shoot high? Accept a 140-pound catchweight fight against Cris Cyborg Justino. You want to talk about gaining back all the momentum youve lost in one night? A win against Justino would do it. Even a competitive loss against Justino would do it. Holm can try to bunt her way out of this slump -- or break it open with a grand slam.If Holms team wants nothing to do with Justino right now, thats understandable -- but what a bold move it would be to take that fight. The UFC offered that matchup to her earlier this year, and she passed because she wanted a rematch against Miesha Tate. It would not be surprising in the least if the UFC explored that option again. AUBURN, Ala. Cheap Air Max 95 . -- Bryce Brown scored 19 points, freshman Danjel Purifoy added 14 points and Auburn hit 13 3-pointers in an 83-66 victory over North Florida on Friday night in a season opener for both teams.Freshmen Mustafa Heron and Jared Harper each had 10 points for Auburn.I thought our defense in the first half was tremendous, Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. In the second half, you know, we didnt play as well defensively. I was disappointed with our rebounding. But to hold a team that averages 84 (points per game) to 66 is good. Were trying to get better. Its a great way to start the season: with a win.The Tigers used their 3-pointers to pull away early, and their athleticism and tenacious defense prevented the Ospreys from clawing back in the second half. The two teams came out jittery as Auburn and North Florida combined for 15 turnovers in the first 11 minutes. Auburn, which was starting three freshmen in guards Heron and Jared Harper and forward Purifoy, committed seven of those. The Tigers lack of size kept North Florida in the game midway through the first half. The Ospreys 6-foot-11 center Romelo Banks, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, gave Auburns Horace Spencer fits. Spencer had to come out for grad transfer LaRon Smith just two minutes into the game, and although Smith wasnt any taller, he provided more-stout defense on Banks. We just didnt have an answer, said North Florida coach Matt Driscoll. Our top guys, our lead guys, our marquee guys, they just didnt have one of their better games. Like, thats gonna happen, so weve got to find a way to play through that. With North Floridas down-low advantage hampered, the Tigers were able to break away as Auburns quick passing and shooting negated the Ospreys hard trapping defense on the perimeter.BIG PICTURE:North Florida: The Ospreys will look to regroup and get their cold shooting back on track next week.Auburn: Pearls young, inexperienced squad kicks off his third year with a win, and the Tigers will look to keep it rolling.STAT OF THE NIGHT:Auburn started three freshmen for the first time since Nov. 20, 2005, when the Tigers started Josh Dollard, Quantez Richardson and Joey Cameron in a 69-54 over Lipscomb.HE SAID ITGive them credit, they shared the sugar, they had a ton of assists. They got no pigs on the team, they look like they really like each other. They can shoot the living dog out of the ball, and they defend well enough and rebound so strong. -- North Florida coach Matt Driscoll.UP NEXTNorth Florida will try to bounce back and notch its first victory against Edward Waters on Monday.Auburn looks to start 2-0 when Georgia State rolls into town next Monday as part of the Cancun Challenge. NAPA, Calif. cheap jerseys from china . -- When the Oakland Raiders set out this offseason to upgrade their defense, general manager Reggie McKenzie systematically targeted every apparent need except for one.McKenzie rebuilt his secondary, added a pass rusher in Bruce Irvin and fortified the defensive line by using a second-round pick on Jihad Ward but was content to stand pat at middle linebacker to give second-year player Ben Heeney a chance to win the job.It definitely lets you know they have confidence in you, Heeney said. It makes you feel good but that doesnt mean anything. Its just what you do on the field every day.Heeney had been groomed to be Oaklands middle linebacker after being drafted in the fifth round out of Kansas in 2015. He had played more on the outside in college but the Raiders liked him in the middle, where he backed up veteran Curtis Lofton for most of last season.Heeney played about one-quarter of the defensive snaps last season but got more time as the year went on and he gained the confidence of his coaches. Now as the starter this year, Heeney has been given the green-dot helmet, which will allow him to get the plays directly into his headset from coordinator Ken Norton Jr.Hes smart, hes fast, and hes relentless, Norton said. He has a nose for the ball, very instinctive. Ben is going to be a very good football player. He cares a lot, hes always getting better. You cant get him out of the film room, asking all the right questions, and we have a lot of confidence in him.Heeney had been the defensive signal caller in college so the role is not new for him and he says it involves little more than hearing the play from Norton and relaying it to his teammates.Having teammates like All Pro Khalil Mack, Irvin, Dan Williams, Sean Smith and Reggie Nelson gives Heeney the confidence that he can perform this season. We have playmakers all over the field, he said. Its definitely fun to be able to give the plays to those guys and see what they can do with it.The Raiders felt little need to upgrade at middle linebacker after letting Lofton go, believing Heeney could fill that role this season. While he is not the prototypical thumper in the middle who can stuff the run, the 226-pound Heeney brings much more speed and agility to the field than Lofton and will be last apt to get exploited in coverage or in space.Ben Heeney is a dog, Irvin said. Hes not the biggest guy, but he plays bigger than what he is. The guy leaves it out there for me. Its just practice, so I can only image what he does for me in a game. Hes a team guy. Thats the biggest thing, having a bunch of team guys who are willing to leave it out there for each other. I can already tell Ben is one of those guys.Heeney finished his rookie season with 27 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks but expects big improvements with more playing time and the comfort level that comes from a year in the NFL and the familiarity with the defensive system. You definitely want the game to slow down as far as seeing your reads, he said. But I like to play fast. I always like to play fast, go get the ball and make plays. Theres a lot of times where I was overaggressive last year. Thats something that hurt me in college. Thats one of the knocks I had.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL cheap jerseys .com) - Following a late-game loss to the reigning NBA champs, the Toronto Raptors will look to sustain their recent high-level play as they travel to Indiana to take on the Pacers. wholesale jerseys . MIAMI -- Affixed to the back of Hassan Whitesides locker in the Miami Heat dressing room is a small photo, one he put there to serve as a constant source of motivation. Its of Ivan Drago -- the villainous boxer character from Rocky IV.I put it there to remind myself of how hard I have to train every day, Whiteside said. The Heat center is a huge fan of the Rocky movies, and right now even his big numbers havent been enough for Miami to win fights. Miami (2-8) has dropped six straight and owned the NBAs third-worst record entering Wednesday, even though Whiteside is averaging 18.2 points and a league-best 15.9 rebounds per game. Its early, but to put Whitesides start in some perspective consider that in the last 35 years only three players -- Kevin Love in 2010-11, Kevin Willis in 1991-92 and Moses Malone in 1982-83 -- averaged at least 18 points and 15 rebounds over an entire season. Thats the current pace for Whiteside, who put up 19 points and a career-high-tying 25 rebounds in Tuesdays 93-90 loss to Atlanta.Whiteside, obviously, is a load, Hawks forward Paul Millsap said. The Heat are Whitesides team now, something no one would have seen coming even a year ago when Miami still had Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to rely upon. So far, hes lived up to the expectations that accompanies signing a $98 million contract like the one he got for the next four years this past summer. His big-man colleagues around the league are taking notice.Sacramento center DeMarcus Cousins, who helped the U.S. win Olympic gold this summer at the Rio Games, was once a teammate of Whitesides. They would play 1-on-1 regularly after practice. Asked how those games went, Cousins acknowledged that Whiteside often won.At one point I thought Hassan was a better player than me, Cousins said. His talent was always there. Everything hes doing now I thought he was capable of doing then. ... Hes proved a lot of people wrong. Hes overcome a lot of adversity and obstacles -- and look at him now. Im extremely happy for him. I know hes beeen though hell and back to get where he is so he deserves everything thats coming his way. cheap nfl jerseys. Whiteside is the only player in the NBA this season to grab at least 10 rebounds in each of his teams games. Hes second in blocks per game and his efficiency rating is seventh-best so far in the league behind only James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Chris Paul.Any questions about what a huge salary bump would do to Whitesides hunger on the court have apparently been answered. It really means something to him right now, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Hes feeling the responsibility of inspiring and helping a team win. Its a big responsibility. And you have to put yourself out there as a competitor and show everybody how much it means to you. And when you do that you make yourself vulnerable, especially when you dont get the result that you want. But Hassan is putting himself out there.Hes even starting to show leadership off the court. The Heat locker room was a quiet and somber place Tuesday night, as would be expected after a sixth consecutive loss -- and yet another close one, which has been the case in most of their defeats so far this season.Whiteside didnt offer excuses. All he insisted was that the Heat, who have lost to San Antonio twice as well as Toronto, Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Utah, Chicago and Atlanta this season -- all of them have winning records so far -- still have plenty of time to figure things out.In other words, hes still got a lot of fight left.Thats what Ive been doing all my life, Whiteside said. You are going to have down days. You are going to have down weeks. That doesnt mean you give up or listen to outside people. They are not in here. They are not on the court. We are not listening to that. We are going to keep coming out and going hard. Keep working and keep learning. We are going to get it. CHARLOTTE, N. Moussa Dembele T Shirt .C. -- Gerald Henderson decided to re-sign with the Bobcats because he had unfinished business to resolve in Charlotte. The 25-year-old Henderson has been through some incredibly trying times in four seasons -- the Bobcats are 106-206 during that span, including an NBA record-worst 7-59 in 2011-12. But he said Monday at a press conference the challenge of turning things around is huge motivation for him. "You go through anything tough and its easy to give up and say you want to move on or whatnot," said Henderson, who signed a three-year, $18 million deal last week with the Bobcats. "As bad as it got, and I was part of the problem, it was kind of one of those things where you look at as it can only get better. With the pieces weve added we can find our way out of it." Henderson, who averaged a career-high 15.5 points per game last season, is particularly excited about the addition of big men Al Jefferson and Cody Zeller, who he said will not only help the team, but should also free up open looks for him and the teams other guards. "I think with more attention on guys down low it frees up the perimeter a bunch," Henderson said. "Any team with a good big man, you will see the guards get more freedom and have more open shots. With Al, teams are going to have to double team him so you have more chances for open shots." Henderson is eager to cash in. He improved his 3-point shooting from 23.4 per cent in 2011-12 to 33 per cent last year, giving the Bobcats hope that he can develop into a legitimate shooting guard. This season Henderson wants to take that a step further and his goal is to shoot better than 40 per cent from beyond the 3-point arc. "That is kind of where the game is going," Henderson said. "The 3-point line is where a lot of teams try to take advantage of it. That is something in my game where I want to take advantage of." Henderson has always been a player whose strength is getting to the basket and drawing fouls, something which former coach Mike Dunlap encouraged. But he said new Bobcats coach Steve Clifford has placed an added emphasis on 3-point shooting. "I know that is the direction our team is going," Henderson said. Its always been my nature to get closer to the basket; Ive always played like that. But as the game evolves, my game has to evolve too. And Im working hard to improve that." Henderson, the 12th overall pick in 2009, said hes looking forward to working with Bobcats new assistant coach Mark Price, whom he referred to as a "shooting expert." Bobcats president of basketball operations Bob Higgins said the teams intention was always to re-sign Henderson, even though negotiations dragged at times as the two sides struggled to work out a deal both sides could live with. Higgins said that while Hendersons improved play over the final 21 games -- he averaged 23.9 points on 47.5 per cent shooting -- certainly turned some heads and was encouraging to see, it wasnt the determining factor in getting him back in a Bobcats uniform. "We always wanted him back," Higgins said. Now Henderson is eager to be part of the solution in Charlotte, a team that is just 28-120 over the past two seasons -- by far the worst combined record in the NBA. Henderson guarantees the Bobcats would be better this season, but wasnt ready to make a prediction on how many games theyll win. Charlotte was 21-61 last season, the second-worst record in the league behind only the Orlando Magic. "Thats a tough question," Henderson said. "Its hard to put numbers on a situation like this. I know this year will be better. Well be much improved. But to put a number on it and put added pressure on yourself isnt really fair." 12:52ET 05-08-13 Axel Witsel Shirt . BEREA, Ohio -- The winless Browns have hit the rewind button on their quarterback shuffle. Jesus Manuel Corona Mexico Jersey .Josh McCown, who broke his left collarbone five weeks ago, will return to the starting lineup Sunday when Cleveland hosts the New York Jets. The Browns have used an NFL-high six quarterbacks this season. The 14th-year pro has been sidelined since Sept. 18, when he was injured in the first quarter against Baltimore. McCown played every offensive snap against the Ravens, passing for 260 yards and two touchdowns. To be back out there is exciting, and Im looking forward to battling with the guys and focusing on getting this win, McCown said Friday.I try to go to work every day with the mindset that this is the only thing that matters. There is great value in being in the moment and enjoying that moment. Maximizing each day is my goal.McCown was medically cleared to play two days earlier, and coach Hue Jackson chose him as the starter following the teams morning walkthrough. He began the season as the backup to Robert Griffin III before both injured their non-throwing shoulders.Rookie Cody Kessler, who had been the starter since Week 3, suffered a concussion last week at Cincinnati and remains in the NFLs head trauma protocol. The last time Josh played, he showed tremendous poise and toughness to play the game, Jackson said. Hopefully, we will go out and protect him and give him a chance to lead this team. The Browns have started three signal callers in losing their first seven games. Griffin fractured his left shoulder in the opener at Philadelphia, McCown was hurt in Week 2 and third-round pick Kessler got the nod for the last five contests.Charlie Whitehurst and Kevin Hogan each threw 24 passes as injury replacements, while wide receiver Terrelle Pryor completed 5 of 9 throws as a change-of-pace QB.Hogan and fellow rookie Joe Callahan will serve as McCowns backups against the Jets at FirstEnergy Stadium.Seeing Josh at practice gave a jolt of energy to everybody because hes a guy you love to have on your team, two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden said. He loves the game, hes such a competitor, hes so smart, and he runs the offense very, very well. When you have Josh under center, you feel like you definitely have a really good chance to win any game that we go into.McCown, 37, is the oldest player on the roster by six years. His professionalism and blue-collar work ethic have transcended the age gap, making him one of the most respected leaders in the locker room since signing with Cleveland in 2015.The native Texan started eight games last season, throwing for 2,109 yards and 12 touchdowns with a team-best 93.3 passer rating. McCown set a franchise record with 457 passing yards at Baltimore on Oct. 11, 2015.Josh is an older guy, but I am really close with him, one of the closest dudes I am with on the team, said rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman, who turned 22 in July. He is a great leader and mentor. He is a soldier. And he is one hell of a football player, too.Game notes Haden (groin) is listed as questionable, but he said he plans on returning from a two-week absence against the Jets. . Cornerback Jamar Taylor (groin) -- the starter opposite Haden -- came up lame Thursday in practice and is questionable. . STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Air Max 97 Homme Noir . -- As he walked off the field, Blake Gillikin glanced down at his left hand and shook his head in disgust. Thankfully, his feet hadnt let him down. The Penn State punter needed them to chase down a snap that glanced off his bandaged left thumb and bounced close to his teams goal line. With more than 550 pounds of Indiana defenders bearing down on him, Gillikin scooped up the loose ball, accelerated to the right and booted a neat, unreturnable punt past midfield. Although officially a 22-yard net punt, Gillikins long right leg sent the ball on a 47-yard trajectory, preventing a big loss. The hidden yardage or the hidden parts of the game, a lot of people dont see that, special teams coordinator Charles Huff said.Gillikins impacted those areas all season for the No. 9 Nittany Lions (8-2, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 8 CFP) who will face Rutgers (2-8, 0-7) and the nations busiest punter Michael Cintron on Saturday.Averaging 41 yards per punt, Gillikin has dropped 17 of his 47 punts inside opponents 20-yard lines, forced 15 fair catches and has seven kicks over 50 yards. More importantly, the Nittany Lions have won the field position battle in eight of their 10 games this season and are forcing opponents to drive at least 76 yards on average every time Gillikin punts. You see some of the punts he kicks and youre like, `Wow, defensive tackle Curtis Cothran said. You didnt expect it to go that far but the ball just keeps sailing and keeps sailing.Plays like Gillikins scramble punt helped Penn State wrestle field position back from Indiana and primed a fourth-quarter comeback. Theyre why James Franklin couldnt wait to recruit a vaunted punter. But he had to wait until the NCAA restored the Nittany Lions to 85 scholarships in 2015. The wait included a 2-16 record in games where Penn State lost the field position battle.Meanwhile, Franklin kept his eye on Gillikin, a three-sport athlete who was booting 50- and 60-yard punts in high school playoff games for Westminster High in Atlanta and had a twin brother who was a long snapper. He quickly won the starting job previously shared by Chris Gulla and former Australian-rules footballer Daniel Pasquariello. It didnt take long for Penn State players to notice Gillikins big leg. He usually warms up by lining his toes up on the goal line and blasting high, hanging punts out to the opposite 40.He was an outstanding soccer player, Tyler Gillikin said. And when we started football in high school, his leg was extremely strong. Blakes always been the kicker. Now a long snapper for Northwestern, Tyler took up the skill as a way to get more playing time alongside his twin during their sophomore year of high school. Theyve combined for countless snaps, and misfires, over the years. Their grandfather sent Tyler the video of Blake mishandling the snap against Indiana last week for a laugh, but also for pride. That pretty much is in a nutshell what kind of athlete he is, Tyler said. His situational awareness was evident on arguably Penn States most consequential hidden play so far this season. After a high snap whistled over his head against Ohio State, Gillikin hustled back across his goal line with Buckeyes in pursuit and collapsed on the ball to salvage a safety rather than let Ohio State score a touchdown. It was a 5-point swing in a game Penn State won by 4 to burst into Big Ten championship contention. You have an athlete where when in the game certain things dont always got the way you planned or maybe not exactly what you said is going to happen -- they dont panic in those situations, Huff said. They allow themselves to still be in the moment, still be able to play and what happens is, you take a bad play and you dont let it become a catastrophe.---This story has been corrected to reflect that Rutgers record is 2-8, not 8-2. Lebron Soldier 10 Mens .PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The World Series champion Kansas City Royals had another tough loss in what is shaping up as a disappointing season.Brad Miller hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Royals 3-2 on Thursday.Kansas City (51-57) split the four-game series after winning the first two games, and the loss dropped the Royals 11 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland, which beat Minnesota 9-2.I know its frustrating to everybody, said Ian Kennedy, who allowed one hit in six-plus innings.Millers 19th homer was a drive off Joakim Soria (4-5), who gave up three of the Rays overall four hits during his one inning. Were lucky to have him, and it doesnt matter where plays, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. While Van Adams has found extraordinary success running her sports marketing firm for the last dozen years, shes quick to say shes still a STEM girl at heart. She fostered this love for all things science, technology, engineering and math while growing up outside of Buffalo, and credits it for her ability to multitask and get to the core of the projects she executes in business. And when it comes to projects, there are many. Besides her daily duties at VanAdams Sports Group, shes been the NYC chapter president of Women in Sports & Events (WISE) for the past nine years, helms an organization called Gathering on the Greens that gives professional women the tools to hit the links confidently, and also serves as an adjunct professor at NYU. So what does she do in her limited down time? Just a little light reading of The New England Journal of Medicine to keep her STEM side engaged.A lesson in Thin MintsLooking back now, I can say that I was driven from a young age. I was always involved in any number of things between community, school and church activities. But even as a Girl Scout, I would be the one who would actually look forward to the cookie season. There were prizes for selling a certain amount, and I always strived to win. I wanted to get to the tier for the free Walkman or whatever it was that year, so I would enlist the help of every friend and family member I could. Any aunt or uncle who worked in an office setting, I would ask to go there after school or have them bring the sheets to sell themselves. Hitting a goal makes you really happy when youre young, and I realized early on that you cant do everything yourself. Thats actually a life lesson I still live by today. But by enlisting everyone I knew to assist in selling for me, I guess I was a little entrepreneur before I became an entrepreneur.Swearing off scrubsI went to an engineering high school called Hutchinson Central in Buffalo where I was always good in the sciences, so I think it was just expected that I would become a doctor. But after graduating from Grambling with a pre-med degree, I took a year off for some discovery time to talk with professionals in medicine, who werent only practicing physicians, but were doing research or were in hospital administration. I sought out their opinions and the general theme was that while I may have the brain capacity to do it, I would be better served on the administrative side instead of straight caregiving. So I guess they could see what I couldnt see.But I was always fascinated by athlete recovery and sports psychology, and a light bulb went off that led to my decision to go back to Grambling for a masters in sports administration (although medicine is still a main interest of mine today). I might be one of only a handful of people who routinely reads medical journals as if Im preparing for something, but I am just doing it for fun.Grad school grubGrambling had renowned baseball and football programs, and I learned a lot about discipline working for a variety of the schools teams. Their focus was education first because thats really whats going to carry you through life. There was an emphasis on commitment and finishing what you start. I was inspired by the athletes because my day would start at 5:30 a.m. and go until sundown between my classes, working in the athletic department and also being a professors assistant. But the athletes were on a similar schedule, which gave me some perspective. I joke now that I lived off of red beans and rice with sweet tea the entire time. I needed something quick and portable. I dont recommend anyone do that now, but grab and go was essential at the time.Weather advisoryAfter going to college in Louisiana, I decided warm weather really suited me and began applying to all the teams I could think of in the geographic locales I wanted. But then the Buffalo Bills called with an opening in public/community/athlete relations. Ironic right? Back to the snow. But you have to be receptive to going to places that werent on your radar. We have plans, but it doesnt mean things work out the way we plan them. So I asked some of my contacts who were coaches or had played professionally for their thoughts, and they unequivocally said it was a golden opportunity that I had to take. And I was also from the area, which meant I could save money on rent by living at home. But my focus was, Wait, its so cold up there! And you know what, it wasnt. It was actually a really mild winter that year. And to think I wasnt going to go.Ditching the playbookThe job offers started coming in when I was with the Bills because its true that one thing leads to another. I then spent two years at the USGA in media relations, which also wasnt on my master plan. I could have just thrown out my goal sheet at that point. And then affter two years, it led to a job at Sports Illustrated in athlete and team relations and being involved with the Olympic cycles. Mens Nike Basketball Shoes LeBron Soldier 11 XI Triple White White/Black-Pure Platinum 897644-103. By then I had made enough contacts to do consulting work on the side and really think about opening my own company.Making good on a dreamI always knew that I wanted to own my own business. Even back when I was going to be a doctor, I wanted to have my own practice. But theres always a question of pulling it off in the beginning. Early on, I worked with companies in a consulting mode by leveraging sports in a marketing capacity or garnering a celebrity athlete to promote a brand. One of the things I didnt think about when I was the middle of it was how natural it came for me and that other people could actually benefit from my expertise. And then athletes started approaching me about assisting with their foundations and needed advice with fundraisers and events. Ive always had a knack for being able to put things together and get things done. While I was doing that, I had every intention of taking a full-time job somewhere in the corporate side of sports. But I ended up becoming so busy that I formed VanAdams Sports Group. That was 12 years ago now, and the rest is history.Always evolvingI assist a lot of athletes going through the transitional phase after they retire from their sport and are looking for whats next. Those conversations take on different aspects -- what they think they would be good at and if theres a marketplace out there for it. A specific example would be Grambling legend Doug Williams, who was involved in a book coming out that chronicled his experience of being the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. So it was logical to integrate publicity around the NFL Legends events for the former greats that Ive been running for the past seven years ahead of the Super Bowls. Or someone like Giants MVP Ottis Anderson who is looking to test the waters in fan apparel, so Im working with him on that now.But Ive also branched out to becoming a contributing writer for the NFL Player Engagement website, which focuses more on the lifestyle of former players and also their health and wellness. Besides that, Ive been an adjunct professor for a number of years and I taught a course called Revenue, Pricing and Strategy at NYU this summer. It does take a lot of time management to juggle it all, but everything I do is interrelated, so its pretty seamless and interlocking. Its all pulling from the same side of my brain, if you will. And I believe you have to keep changing with the times. Athlete marketing is great, but then you bump it up to the next level where youre integrating those things in a more meaningful way.Executive courseI noticed in my own professional network that there were a lot of women who wanted to learn how to play golf but didnt quite know how to start. Or they took lessons but when they went to play on their company outings, the lessons didnt serve them well. No one wants to feel inadequate or embarrassed in front of their colleagues and peers. So I just felt women needed a little bit more of a push. The initial Gathering on the Greens event four years ago began as a networking event, but then I formalized it and we now have events all around the country. It teaches women about the game, but its also about professional development by using golf as a tool for business. No matter how many lessons a woman will have from a pro or how many times they go to the driving range or read a golf book, theres no replacement for actually getting out there on the course and doing it.WISE adviceBefore I give advice, I like to understand what the womans endgame is. That usually shapes what Im going to share with her. Because you can give people blanket advice (work hard, be prepared) but giving advice should be customized to that person. What are you really trying to do? Whats your aspiration? And then I weigh in from my experience and background on something that will hopefully benefit her.But I do tell them that they should only ask what they cant easily find on Google. If you have an opportunity to get 10 minutes with someone over coffee, dont waste those minutes with questions that you could easily find out on your own. Ask something that is going to help you. What do you really want to know? Ive had people say, What is it like being a woman in the sports business? But how is that going to help you actually get started? Be considerate of other peoples time and be prepared. And dont say, I want to be just like you because that person is already taken. Its more about what that person does that you find intriguing and then you can have a conversation about that. RIO DE JANEIRO -- A petition was started on Change. Nike VaporMax Plus KPU Gris Lobo/Rosa .org for Abbey DAgostino to be the United States flag bearer during the closing ceremonies of the Olympics because of her sportsmanship during a womens 5,000 meters heat this week.New Zealands Nikki Hamblin tripped during the race, and DAgostino fell over her. DAgostinos first reaction, despite being injured, was to motivate Hamblin to get up and continue running. Both women finished the heat.Abbey DAgostino is the living embodiment of the Olympic Spirit and personifies the very best traits of the U.S.A., the petition says.DAgostino would certainly be a most worthy choice to carry the Stars and Stripes. But after suffering a torn ACL, a torn meniscus and a strained MCL in the spill, she wont be in Rio for the closing ceremonies. The U.S. flag bearer, who is voted on by fellow Team USA athletes, often has an inspiring or at least interesting story that goes beyond performance at the Games.Distance runner Lopez Lomong was one of the Lost Boys of Sudan before fleeing the country and becoming an American citizen. He carried the U.S. flag for the opening ceremonies at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Archer Khatuna Lorig, who was born in the Republic of Georgia in the former Soviet Union, carried the flag during the closing ceremonies of those Games. Her former home was being attacked by Russia at the same time she was representing the United States, the third country for which she competed.Speedskater Joey Cheek carried the flag at the 2006 Winter Olympics closing ceremonies after donating the $40,000 he earned from medal bonuses to the international charity Right to Play. Bryshon Nellum carried the flag at the 2012 closing ceremonies in London after sprinting to a 4x100 relay silver medal despite having been shot in the leg by gang members three years earlier. After shot-putter Pat McDonald won a gold and silver in 1912, he served in World War I. He then carried the flag into the opening ceremonies at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. And of course, Michael Phelps carried the flag during the opening ceremonies in Rio, but he has way too many medals weighing him down to do so at the closing ceremonies. With DAgostino out of the running, who should carry the flag Sunday night? Here are some worthy candidates:Simone Biles: Winner of four gold medals plus a bronze and possibly the greatest gymnast of all time.Ashton Eaton: The worlds greatest athlete is just the third Olympian to win two gold medals in the decathlon.Kayla Harrison: She was sexually molested as a girl by her judo coach and went on to win two gold medals in the sport.Bernard Lagat: A former medalist runner for Kenya, the 41-year-old father is competing in his fifth Olympics.Ibtihaj Muhammad: The fencer was a powerful role model against religious stereotyping when she became the first U.S. athlete to compete in the Olympics while wearing a hijab. She won bronze in womens team sabre.Kim Rhode: A bronze in skeet shooting here extended her streak of winning a medal to six consecutive Games.Katie Ledecky: The winner of four swimming gold medals here and, like Biles, shes still a teenager.Kristin Armstrong: She won her third gold medal in the cycling time trial one day before turning 43.David Boudia: The diver recovered from a life of drinking, drugs and depression to become a gold medalist, a husband and a father. There undoubtedly are many other worthy candidates for the honor, so good luck to the athletes who have to choose, because it wont be easy. Despite the injury, Horton has not missed a game this postseason and is Bostons second-leading scorer in the playoffs with 18 points. He has seven goals and 11 assists in 17 games, placing him behind only David Krejci, who is leading all NHLers in goals (9) and points (23). After beginning the Stanley Cup Final with a memorable triple-overtime battle, the Bruins and Blackhawks have a tough act to follow. The Blackhawks grabbed a 4-3 decision in the opener on Wednesday, but not before erasing a two-goal deficit in the third period against the visiting Bruins. Andrew Shaw ultimately ended the game, scoring with 7:52 to play in the third overtime session to stake Chicago to a 1-0 lead in this best-of- seven series. The victory improved Chicagos home record in this postseason to 10-1, while the Bruins, who will host Game 3 on Monday, fell to 5-3 as the visiting club. Boston led 2-0 after a pair of Milan Lucic goals and the Bruins were ahead 3-1 after Patrice Bergeron scored at 6:09 of the third period. However, Dave Bolland scored 1:51 later to cut the deficit to 3-2 and Johnny Oduya evened the score with 7:46 left in regulation. Both teams had plenty of chances to win it before Shaws tally ended the epic contest late in the third OT. Michal Rozsival got the puck at the right point and flung it on net. Bolland deflected it in the slot, and the puck then went off the right knee of Shaw to get past Tuukka Rask for the win. "This is something you dream of as a kid and you have to seize the opportunity when its there," said Shaw of his winner. "It was luck." Shaws winner ended the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup Finals history. Game 1 of last years final round between Los Angeles and New Jersey also ended in OT, marking the first time since 1934 and 1935 that consecutive Cup Final openers went to an extra session. Corey Crawford turned aside 51-of-54 shots in the win for Chicago, while Rask made 59 saves in a losing effort. "Crowe was great, he kept us in there," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville about his goaltender. "He made several all-alone plays and saves. Had some odd-man breaks, some dangerous looks. He was great. Found the puck, challenged. A lot of pucks at the net, a lot of bouncing pucks with traffic, and a big penalty kill as well." Boston fired just 14 shots on net over the second and third periods on Wednesday, but they outshot the Blackhawks by a 29-24 margin in the overtime sessions. "I thought that in overtime we got better, we got a little stronger," said Boston head coach Claude Julien. "We had some great looks, some great opportunities, we just didnt bury them. Eventually somebody is going to score a goal as fatigue sets in. Not disappointed in our effort. Theres certain things youre going to want to fix for next game. But as far as the game is concerned, it was a hard fought game." Lucic added an assist in the loss to give him a three-point night, while his linemate David Krejci notched a pair of helpers. This series marks the first time Original Six franchises have met in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1979, when Montreal defeated the New York Rangers in five games. The Bs and Hawks also have won Stanley Cup titles recently, with Chicago beating Philadelphia for the championship in 2010 before Boston downed Vancouver in the following years matchup.
