UK-based additive and masterbatch manufacturer color master batch formula has been granted a new patent for formulation improvements made to PVCu polymer specific colouring system, Vynacol.

The company announced 10 July that the patent covers the refinements made to the formulation technology for the masterbatch, which comes both in granular form, for dry blend processing, or in prill, for pre-compounded PVCu.

“This [optimised masterbatch]… offers significantly improved melt rheology control for consistent processing of more highly loaded formulations,” explained Tony Gaukroger, director, Colour Tone.

According to Guakroger, the improved formulation, available in both granular and prill formats, can ultimately increase the quality of the PVCu product.

Vynacol was originally developed to solve historic compatibility and processing problems with adding colour concentrates to PVCu. The masterbatch is claimed to make rigid and flexible PVC as easy to colour as any other polymer.

Colour Tone maintains that Vynacol is suitable for injection moulding, extrusion and blow moulding and provides “brilliant, vibrant colours, special effects and a superior finish”. Vynacol can also be customised to feature functional additives, including heat reflecting infrared pigments, UV protection and antistatic qualities.

Prior to Vynacol, colour was added to PVCu by using liquid colours, wax dispersions, universal and flexible PVC based masterbatches. All those colouring systems introduced additives into the PVCu, which could make the processing difficult.

The standard color masterbatch commands for the major share in the global color masterbatch market owing to its extensive utilization in processing polymers. Based on application, the color masterbatch market has been segmented into packaging, automotive, consumer goods and retail, textile and others. The packaging segment is leading the global color masterbatch market owing to the rapid expansion of packaging industry. Increased utilization of plastic products in consumer goods are leading to the significant expansion of the consumer goods and retail segment in the global color masterbatch market.
Geographically, the global color masterbatch market has been segmented into five major regions such as North America, South America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa. The Europe region commands for the major share in the global color masterbatch market and is forecasted to expand at a CAGR of 5.60% during the forecast period. The color masterbatch market is majorly driven by factors such as increased research and development activities for optimizing the masterbatch manufacturing process, rapid expansion of end-use industries and high demand for good quality color masterbatches from various end-use industries in this region. The Asia Pacific region commands for the second largest share in the global color masterbatch market and is anticipated to expand significantly at a CAGR of 6.63% during the assessment period. Rise in demand for color masterbatch due to rapid expansion of packaging industry is fueling the growth of the color masterbatch market in the North America region. With this range Colour Tone aims to satisfy brand owners ‘end of life’ recyclability concerns for problem single-life black plastic tubs, trays and films.
The first two black masterbatches from this latest colouring system are developed for polypropylene applications, but can be applied to any other polymer offering improved colouring and coverage capabilities compared to previous formulations.Carbon black masterbatch
Its new NIR black 958884 masterbatch satisfies EU food contact legislation and is available at an economic 0.21p per tray, this represents a substantial 60% price saving compared to the costs quoted in the first WRAP commissioned project to commercialise this technology, ‘Development of NIR Detectable Black Plastic Packaging.’
Tony Gaukroger, director, Colour Tone, said: “Historically the price premium for NIR technology has been a ‘barrier’ to its adoption. We now have a masterbatch that delivers to brand owners and retailers the required eco-benefits at a competitive price that has significantly reduced the ‘gap’ between this and conventional carbon black pigments.”
While the NIR black 95893 supports those applications required to meet the ‘Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), code of Federal Regulations’ criteria (when limited to a maximum dosage of 10%). This is a market first for an NIR detectable black masterbatch and will benefit those global companies who supply to US markets.
Colour Tone helped to pioneer the development of the first NIR colourants that were proven to enable black plastics to be made ‘visible’ to optical sorting methods. Since most black plastics packaging featured carbon black and other pigments that absorb infra-red light rendering them ‘invisible’ to NIR spectrophometers.
With the UK’s consumer packaging recycling rates currently stalling at 30 per cent, much lower than our European neighbours, it confirms that considerable work still has to be done to help brand owners ‘close the loop’ on difficult to recycle single-use plastics.
Tony Gaukroger, continues: “Recently we’ve seen ‘knee-jerk’ responses to ensure that single-use packaging is recyclable, with some retailers finding bio-degradable cardboard and other alternatives. This is despite the fact that these materials are less eco-friendly, since cardboard requires massive energy to produce compared to plastic.
“The focus should be instead on finding ‘end-of-life’ solutions for reliable and proven plastics packaging, if we are to continue benefiting from a material that can triple a food’s shelf-life; reduce spoilage and therefore prevent unnecessary food waste.
“If recycling is to be effective it also requires materials in bulk, by adopting these varied alternatives it will become a problem for recyclers to even sort, so a consistent approach to materials we specify is very much needed now.
“Despite being a world leader in this technology that facilitates the NIR sorting of difficult to recycle plastics packaging, the UK’s kerbside collections have remained disappointingly slow to recognise this need. While in Europe, single-use plastics recycling is accelerating, with new markets developing to reuse the materials sorted from the mixed plastics waste stream, shouldn’t we be following their example?

The company also manufactures a wide range of galvanised-steel water tanks for a variety of horticultural uses, including rain-water harvesting; it also produces tanks for the rapidly expanding European fish-farming industry. Established in 1970, silo forming machine Brice-Baker has continuously developed its product range to meet the growing market demand for grain storage and grain-handling equipment. The company designs, manufactures, supplies and installs complete grain storage plants and counts Camgrain among its customers. The latter is the UK’s largest farmer-owned central storage business and has a total capacity of nearly 250,000 tonnes; Brice-Baker supplied not only the silos, but also conveyors and associated equipment.

The company’s silos — renowned for their robust construction and high galvanising standards — can be substantial structures. For example, its flat-bottom silos (for the shorth and long-term storage of grain, oil seeds and other granulated free-flowing materials) offer capacities up to 16,600m3 and can be up to 28m in diameter and 32.4m high. Meanwhile, its hopper-bottom silos (these provide temporary wet grain storage as part of a grain-drying plant and other ‘buffer bin’ applications in silo plants) can be up to 13m in diameter and 35m high.

Brice-Baker is an ambitious company and is gearing up to expand its business into Russia and eastern Europe over the next few years. This planned expansion is being supported by a multi-million-pound investment that will further modernise its production facilities and increase its manufacturing capacity. This investment includes the recent relocation to a new 5,000m2 bespoke manufacturing facility at Yate (near Bristol), as well as new production machinery that includes two Bradbury automated hydraulic rolling and forming machines and a Durma tandem press brake.

Supplied by Milton Keynes-based Axe & Status , which installed its first Durma tandem press brake in the UK some 18 months ago (at John Harvey Engineering, Ipswich), the tandem unit at Brice-Baker has an 8m 640-tonne capacity and replaces an ageing Rhodes folding press that took around 2hr to re-tool and re-set — a time that Brice-Baker process improvement manager Adrian White says is too long in today’s competitive manufacturing climate. The Durma tandem press brake installation, which weighs some 40 tonnes and follows the purchase of a Durma 3m (10mm) guillotine from Axe & Status last summer, comprises two Durma AD-S 40320 machines (each with a capacity of 4,050mm × 320 tonnes) and takes just 10min to re-tool and re-set.

Moreover, these two press brakes offer significant levels of flexibility and capacity improvements when it comes to manufacturing silo roof panels, because they can be operated as a single 8m unit or as two individual 4m press brakes running different jobs.
