Samsung Shows Off Latest Verizon 5G Home Modems
At Mobile World Congress here today, Samsung Networks showed off what may be the final version of Verizon's home 5G equipment. The company's gigabit home Internet service will debut in Sacramento later this year; Verizon has promised a fixed-wireless 5G service for homes in "three to five cities" in 2018.Industrial gsm gprs modem
Last year, we saw an early form of the 5G home equipment (and in fact gave it a Best of MWC award), but it's changed a lot in the past year. Formerly a big black slab that looked like a cable box, it has now become a vertically oriented white box about the size of a hardback book, with an Ethernet port on the back. It sits in your window, receives a 5G signal, and then distributes it as Wi-Fi in your home.
Running in Samsung's booth, the white "consumer premise equipment" (CPE) was quiet, but hot. The only status indicators on the device are four green LEDs recessed into the area where the ports go.
Samsung also showed off the 5G millimeter wave cell site that will serve Verizon's 5G neighborhood, and the external modem unit that will serve homes where Verizon's millimeter-wave spectrum can't make it into the windows.
All of the system's components are, thankfully, a lot smaller and less obtrusive than we expected. 5G cell sites will be able to sit in "shrouds" on light poles, and are about the size of a backpack. That's important, because they'll have to be placed every 500 to 1,000 feet as the fast, millimeter-wave signal doesn't have much range. The external, weatherproofed antenna unit for the outside of a house is more like the size of a coffee table book. It's all a heck of a lot less imposing than a satellite dish.

WiFi firmware bug affects laptops, smartphones, routers, gaming devices
Details have been published today about a vulnerability affecting the firmware of a popular WiFi chipset deployed in a wide range of devices, such as laptops, smartphones, gaming rigs, routers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.WIFI GPS Router
Discovered by Embedi researcher Denis Selianin, the vulnerability impacts the firmware of Marvell Avastar 88W8897, one of the most popular WiFi chipsets on the market, currently deployed with devices such as Sony PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Surface laptops, Samsung Chromebooks, Samsung Galaxy J1 smartphones, and Valve SteamLink cast devices, just to name a few.
In a report published today, Selianin described how someone could exploit the Avastar firmware (based on a custom implementation of the ThreadX real-time operating system) to execute malicious code without any user interaction.
"I've managed to identify ~4 total memory corruption issues in some parts of the firmware," said Selianin. "One of the discovered vulnerabilities was a special case of ThreadX block pool overflow. This vulnerability can be triggered without user interaction during the scanning for available networks."
The researcher says the firmware function to scan for new WiFi networks launches automatically every five minutes, making exploitation trivial. All an attacker has to do is send malformed WiFi packets to any device with a Marvell Avastar WiFi chipset and wait until the function launches, to execute malicious code and take over the device.
"That's why this bug is so cool and provides an opportunity to exploit devices literally with zero-click interaction at any state of wireless connection (even when a device isn't connected to any network)," Selianin said.

Convert ATX PSU to Bench Supply
The standard computer power supply unit (PSU) turns the incoming 110V or 220VAC (alternating current) into various DC (direct current) output voltages suitable for powering the computer’s internal components and with a little bit of imagination it is possible to convert ATX PSU to a bench mixed Signal connector .
atx psu
Most computer PSU’s range from about 150W up to 500W so there is plenty of power. The original ATX standard connector used for powering the motherboard was a single 20-pin Molex that has all the required +12VDC and +5VDC voltages with huge output currents and short circuit protection as well as a Power-ON wire that allows the PC’s software to turn “OFF” the PSU on shut down.
Firstly and more importantly before you start to convert ATX PSU, make sure that the PSU is unplugged from the mains supply and discharged by letting it sit unconnected for several minutes before you start. This is important! as it could result in a potentially dangerous or even lethal situation due to the high voltages inside the PSU if you decide to dismantle it. Also make sure that the metal box of the PSU is correctly earthed or grounded. You are responsible for your own safety!.
We can not just simply plug the PSU into the mains supply and expect to get the required 5 or 12 volts output. The standard PC power supply unit has two safety mechanisms that prevent it from being switched “ON” without the motherboard attached.
There are several different coloured wires attached to the 20-pin ATX connector providing several different voltage outputs such as +3.3V, +5V, +12V, -12V, -5V as well as a number of black ground wires and a couple signal wires as shown in the following image along with their colour-code and description.

What is the difference between a shielded and unshielded modular coupler?
A Shielded Coupler is encased in a metal structure allowing it to ground to a metal wall plate or panel; an Unshielded Coupler is not.rj45 unshielded connector
A shielded coupler would be required when using a shielded cable terminated with a shielded plug. The shielded plug would tie the shield to the coupler, thus grounding it as well as passing it on to the shielded cable assembly plugged into the other side of the coupler. Because of this, a shielded coupler is only required if you are using shielded cable assemblies.
If the cable assemblies you are using do not have shielded plugs then you do not need a shielded coupler. These products are primarily used in the networking, telecommunications, computing, military, aerospace, transportation and broadcasting industries. Bel's product groups include Magnetic Solutions (integrated connector modules, power transformers, power inductors and discrete components), Power Solutions and Protection (front-end, board-mount and industrial power products, module products and circuit protection), and Connectivity Solutions (expanded beam fiber optic, copper-based, RF and RJ connectors and cable assemblies). A Battery That Could Change The World
Last week I happened to catch an intriguing documentary on NOVA called Search for the Super Battery.green Energy Storage Battery
The topic is of intense interest to me, as the development of better, cheaper batteries is critical for both the future of electric vehicles (EVs) and for the future electrical grid. Battery improvements are needed to increase the range of EVs, and cheaper batteries can help drive down the costs of EVs so more consumers can afford them.
For the electrical grid, increased penetration of renewables poses some challenges because of their intermittent nature. Since the wind could stop blowing at any time, and the sun's radiation can only be captured during the day, these sources of power need to be backed up. Cost-effective storage of power could enable essentially unlimited penetration of renewables into the grid.
Thus, tremendous effort has gone into battery development in recent years. The effort is paying off, with prices for battery cells falling by 70 percent between 2012 and 2017, according to PV Magazine. But costs need to continue to decline to make widespread use of utility-scale battery storage a reality.
Lithium-ion batteries have become the battery of choice in many consumer electronics such as laptops, and in electric vehicles such as those produced by Tesla. But there are a couple of problems with these types of batteries that need to be resolved.
For reasons that are explained in the documentary, the use of lithium-metal electrodes enables a greater energy density than conventional lithium-ion batteries. But lithium-metal electrodes can develop finger-like structures called dendrites that will eventually short-circuit the battery.
Tesla Leads The Way In Cheapest Battery Pack Costs
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), Tesla and its lithium-ion battery partner Panasonic are the leaders in EV battery technology, especially in terms of costs of the cells and packs.solar street light lithium battery
One of the reasons is low cobalt content in the cells (below 10% of cathode weight). Elon Musk said in June that the target for battery cell cost in 2018 is $100/kWh, and $100/kWh on the pack-level within two years.
In fact, Tesla already delivers the car with the cheapest cost per kWh in the form of the Model 3.
BNEF's research revealed that other suppliers offered cells for $120/kWh in 2017, but to reach $100/kWh on the pack-level is in general not expected for the industry until 2025.Anyways, the lowest battery costs gives Tesla an edge compared to other electric car manufacturers and BNEF expects that the advantage will carry on for several years.
Well, having cheaper batteries will definitely help Tesla to grow quickly in an increasingly difficult market where competitors are introducing long-range electric cars.
