An estimated 48 million Americans suffer from some form of hearing loss—the vast majority of them older adults. Almost one-third of people ages 65 to 74 report difficulty hearing, and the number rises to about half by age 75, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.Digital Hearing Aids Cheap

Evidence is mounting that untreated hearing loss is a significant national health concern, and studies have linked it with other serious health problems, including depression, a decline in memory and concentration, and perhaps even dementia.
The most common type of hearing loss, called sensorineural, often stems from damage to the tiny hair cells that line the inner ear. These cells convert incoming sound waves into electrical signals that are then shuttled to the brain. The brain interprets the signals as meaningful sounds.
Aging and chronic exposure to loud noises are the most common causes of damage, but certain medications, illnesses, and a family history of hearing loss can also increase your risk.

Although sensorineural hearing loss is often not reversible, it can be managed with hearing aids, which selectively amplify sounds. Cases of severe hearing loss or hearing loss in only one ear can be managed with cochlear implants, which electrically stimulate the auditory nerve by bypassing the damaged portions of the hearing system. This is less common and often occurs as a result of a physical blockage or malformation in the middle or outer ear. Impacted earwax, fluid buildup in the middle ear from an infection, and certain disorders can block sound from reaching the inner ear and brain.

Removing the wax buildup in the outer ear, treating infections in the middle ear, and, in the case of malformations, having corrective surgery typically restore hearing. If not, a hearing aid may be used.

Older adults sometimes have a mix of both types of loss. For example, age-related hearing loss plus wax in the middle ear can interfere with sound conduction to the inner ear.Once hair cells in the inner ear are dead, there’s no bringing them back. But hearing aids may significantly improve your ability to hear by making sounds louder and easier to understand.

Hearing aids have a microphone to pick up sound, an amplifier to make sound louder, and a receiver that sends the sound into the ear canal. In modern digital aids, microphones transmit sound to a computer chip, which adjusts the volume and amplifies the sound frequencies needed to help improve your hearing. (Though analog aids are less common and less complex than digital aids, they do have advantages, including fewer advanced features. That can make them more user-friendly.)

A hearing professional can program a digital aid to filter out wind and other background noise, as well as fine-tune the aid to match your specific hearing loss pattern. More and more models can sync wirelessly with your smartphone, enabling you to take calls, stream audio, and even adjust your aid’s settings using an app.

Phonak Appoints Gunnar Peterson as Lyric Ambassador

Phonak announced the appointment of fitness trainer Gunnar Peterson as a Lyric Ambassador for his role in raising awareness of the link between hearing health and total wellness during Men’s Health Month. Peterson wears Phonak Lyric, “the world’s only 100% invisible extended-wear hearing aid that can be worn 24/7 for months at a time,”1 according to Phonak. He credits the device for enabling him to improve his relationships at home and at work, where he trains celebrities, professional athletes, and everyday people from his gym in Beverly Hills, Calif. Peterson is also the Los Angeles Lakers’ Director of Strength and Endurance and is said to be recognized as an expert in functional training and innovative fitness techniques.ITE Digital Hearing Aids
We are thrilled to have Gunnar on board as a Lyric ambassador, especially during Men’s Health Month,” said Barb VanSomeren, Vice President of Marketing at Phonak US. “We know that men are more likely to experience hearing loss compared to women primarily because men are more likely to work in occupations and engage in activities that expose them to excessive noise levels. Gunnar’s story is a reminder why proactively addressing your hearing health is key to living well.”

In 2018, a large, comparative multi-country study on hearing loss and hearing aid use found men represented the clear majority of people affected by mild-to-moderate hearing loss.2 Furthermore, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that untreated hearing loss is closely associated with quality of life issues like sadness, depression, social isolation, and anxiety.3

“I’ve dedicated my life and career to helping people look and feel better through exercise and a healthy lifestyle,” said Peterson. “I’m proud to be working with the amazing team at Phonak to make hearing health a core component of total-body wellness, and to remind everyone of the importance of getting your hearing tested and taking action if you have hearing loss. Don’t just do it for your own benefit, but for your family and for all those around you.”

For more information, click here to watch a video of Peterson speaking about his personal experience with hearing loss and how he overcame it. For more information about Peterson.

In the June 2019 edition of Hearing Review, a retrospective review of Lyric and its use in a private practice is offered by audiologist Mark Sanford and Lizz Jensen.

The intestines naturally secrete mucus that helps coat the intestinal tract, digest food, and pass stool. Sometimes, some of this mucus ends up in poop. A small amount of mucus in one or two diapers, especially if there are no other symptoms, is usually not a sign of illness.newborn diapers per day

Sometimes, mucus appears in large quantities or it recurs for several days. In this case, there is more likely to be an underlying issue. Here, we take a look at some of these causes and explain when to contact a doctor.
In a baby with diarrhea, the runny, loose stools may contain mucus. However, in babies that breastfeed, it is common for the poop to be loose and somewhat runny, so it can be difficult to tell the difference between regular stool and diarrhea.Infections caused by bacteria or a virus, dietary changes, and numerous other issues can cause diarrhea.

Diarrhea often goes away on its own. Ensure that the baby drinks plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Caregivers of babies who only breastfeed should make sure that there are frequent feedings.

In infants under 3 months of age, prolonged or severe diarrhea can quickly cause dehydration. Severe diarrhea can even be fatal.Call a doctor if a baby shows signs of dehydration, if diarrhea lasts more than 1–2 days, or if diarrhea is very severe.

Diapers Etc. hands out around 10,000 to 12,000 diapers per month to families in need, for free. For those families on the financial edge, the necessary baby-care staple would be a crippling cost otherwise.

Last month, 600 people came through the door of the Far East Dallas nonprofit."There's been tears of despair, of folks who just feel like they have let their kids down, that they don't know how to make ends meet to take care of the kids that they love," co-founder Justin Barringer said.baby diaper raw material

He runs the diaper pantry out of an old church. On distribution day, parents get 50 diapers per kid. That will last a typical toddler a week.Erica O'Brien of East Dallas visits Diapers Etc. on the last Saturday of every month. She's mom to two kids — 8-year-old Colton and 16-month-old Skylar.

She also works as a teacher's assistant at a nearby elementary school. Right now she has a job and her husband doesn't. The $1,500 a month she brings home has to cover all four of them.

"It's very difficult for rent and all the bills and everything," she says. "It's living pretty much paycheck to paycheck right now."

Parents of children who aren't yet potty-trained will tell you: One of the biggest headaches is paying for diapers. Kids grow, so they always need the next size up. And don't forget about baby wipes.One-year-old Skylar still needs six or seven disposable diapers a day. O'Brien says she's come very close to running out.

"I have actually gotten down to like one diaper left for her, and there was still, like, another week before I could go get diapers."

On that day, a friend fronted her some — and said not to worry about paying her back. When O'Brien does buy diapers, she can't afford very many at a time. That costs.

"I mean, it's like a package of 25 for like $11, or a box of 100-and-something for less than $20," she says. "So you end up having to pay a lot more having to buy the little packages."Barringer gets his diapers from Hope Supply Company, which funnels baby essentials to nonprofits throughout North Texas. CEO Barbara Johnson echoes what mom Erica O'Brien said about the challenges of buying enough diapers at a time.

"A wealthier family can buy in bulk," Johnson says. "They can go to Sam's, they can go to Costco and they can buy at a better price than a poor family that has to go to the 7-Eleven to pick up a few diapers."

Water supplies to the Libyan capital and surrounding cities have been restored two days after they were cut off when an armed group stormed a control room, averting shortages that could have caused a humanitarian crisis.water supply control

“The crisis of halting water supplies has ended and flows have started,” the Great Man-Made River company, a pipe network supplying ground water from the Sahara, said in a statement.

On Sunday, an armed group had stormed a pumping station run by the Great Man-Made River south of Tripoli, forcing employees to shut down water pipes connected to underground wells. The pipes supplied water to Tripoli, a city of more than 2 million people, and other coastal areas.
Forces loyal to the warlord Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar have been besieging Tripoli since 4 April in an attempt to take it from the UN-backed government of national accord (GNA). Their offensive, which has the tacit support of countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, is one of the most serious flare-ups in fighting since Muammar Gaddhafi was deposed in 2011.

The UN special envoy, Ghassan Salame, warned the UN Security Council that if the international community did not stop arms shipments to Libyan factions and demand an immediate ceasefire, it risked the partition of the country and further regional instability.

“I am no Cassandra, but the violence on the outskirts of Tripoli is just the start of a long and bloody war on the southern shores of the Mediterranean, imperilling the security of Libya’s immediate neighbours and the wider Mediterranean region.”

He warned many Libyans were starting to resign themselves to the possibility of a civil war lasting months or years and arms shipments to warring parties were feeding a proxy war. “Arms are pouring again to both sides,” he said.

The group who closed off the water supplies claimed to be supporters of Haftar the leader of the Libyan National Army (LNA), but the link has been disputed. There were claims the armed group was operating independently and that the GNA was making a link to undermine support for the controversial general.

It is generally accepted that the LNA’s plans for a quick victory and the defeat of the GNA have been thwarted.

The agency that oversees the water project, first commissioned by the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, insisted it had never taken sides in the current civil strife and said water supplies should never be used to pursue any interest. “Water is God’s gift to all and should not be used to dictate or bargain under any conditions at all,” the authority said.

As a result of the attack, water was cut not just to Tripoli but also to Gharyan and some other western mountain cities. Supplies to residents were not immediately halted because the water system holds two days of capacity.

The incident underlined the vulnerability of Libya’s civil fabric to a prolonged war. The authority previously warned it was finding it difficult to repair leaks because of the fighting. Libya periodically suffers from water outages. The GNA accused the armed group of seeking to “lock the water from the capital to lower the morale of its inhabitants”.

The episode may rebound badly on Haftar as he seeks to persuade the international community he can be the upholder of security against the criminal militias who have afflicted the weak GNA government in Tripoli. It will also add to the sense that the siege is deepening a general lawlessness in Libya that others, including Islamic State, are beginning to exploit. There have been a number of Isis hit-and-run attacks in the past month, mainly in the south of the country.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are electronic power controllers that allow for precise control of the speed of alternating current (AC) induction motors that drive a variety of rotating machines including fans, pumps and compressors. These motors are used in most heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and account for a significant portion of the total HVAC energy consumption. More efficient operation of these motors using VFDs can result in significant energy savings.variable frequency drive
The speed and torque of an AC induction motor is proportional to the frequency and voltage of its power supply. Since most electricity supplies are at fixed frequency and voltage, the speed and torque of induction motors connected directly to a conventional electricity source will also be constant. When used to drive an HVAC fan, for example, this means the fan will run at constant speed and torque as well.
VFDs intercept the incoming electricity supply and modify the incoming voltage and AC frequency based on the load requirements. In this way, the motor speed and torque can be adjusted to match the load / demand it is servicing with high precision. Continuing with the HVAC fan example, if the demand on the HVAC system were to change, the speed of the fan could be altered by the VFD controlled motor to match the change in demand.
VFDs can also be used to run machinery at higher than rated speeds for short periods of time. This has additional advantages in terms of energy savings but must be done with appropriate caution.
In the absence of VFDs, the fixed AC motor speed and torque mean that the equipment these motors drive operate at constant speed and torque as well and system control is achieved through dissipating (wasting) energy by mechanical means. In the case of the HVAC fan, if the air supply demand decreases, and the energy input from the fan remains constant, then in order to reduce the supply of air to the space being conditioned the energy in the flow must be dissipated using vents or valves or air must be diverted and dumped elsewhere. Either way, energy is being wasted to deliberately reduce the supply of air and the efficiency of the system is reduced.
With a VFD, the output of the system (air supply in this case) is controlled by directly changing the speed or torque of the motor. At low demand the motor runs slowly and the power consumption decreases in proportion to the demand resulting in increased efficiency and energy savings.
In addition, since the fan runs at constant speed it must be sized to deal with the maximum possible demand. This demand would typically only occur for a few hours of the year and so for the rest of the time the system is oversized and operating at reduced efficiency.
Since the VFD can be used to run the system at higher than rated speeds, the whole system can be sized according to more common conditions and the extreme demand conditions can be serviced by running the system at over-speed. The overall energy efficiency of the system is thus further improved.

Behind every beautifully custom printed textile is a specific fabric printing chemistry and process that will vary from application to application (or from fabric type to fabric type). For example, printing on cotton canvas requires a different method than printing polyester sports apparel. The fibers in each material respond differently to various ink chemistries, meaning there is no single process that will provide the ideal print for every fabric type.digital sublimation printing fabric

However, digital fabric printing can be less complex than it sounds. In order to find the exact fabric printing machine that’s right for your intended use, you just need to understand the processes that are available for your application. Two of the most common techniques — dye-sublimation and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing — are detailed below to give you an overview on how digital printing on fabric should be approached for each type of material.

Dye Sublimation Printing
When it comes to fabric printing on polyester, dye sublimation is the go-to chemistry. Techniques can include using a traditional dye-sub transfer printer or a direct-to-fabric dye-sublimation printer. While transfer printing is more prevalent, direct-to-fabric printing on polyester is certainly possible and will actually yield better results during certain applications.

The dye-sub printing process uses a specific ink type: disperse dyes. Graphics are printed onto transfer paper, which is then placed in a heat press (clam shell or roll-to-roll calender unit) along with the polyester fabric that you’re decorating. The heat turns the dried, solid inks into a gas, penetrating the polyester to create a permanent graphic. Polymers in the polyester allow the inks to bond and become fully embedded into the material. The result is a completely washable, high-resolution image consisting of vibrant colors.
If you’re looking to print directly onto materials like cotton, nylon or silks, roll-to-roll direct-to-fabric printers are required. It is important to understand that for printing on all non-polyester fabrics, there is no “paper-transfer process” available. The ink chemistries best suited for all of these fabric types require the ink be printed directly onto the fabric. The process is just as it sounds — it involves printing directly onto a roll of “prepared-for-print” fabric. Direct-to-fabric is sometimes also referred to as direct-to-textile or direct-to-garment printing.
