How does this affect the UFC and the WWE?Florian: Weve got to do something about getting these tests back in a more timely manner. For someone like Mark Hunt [Lesnars opponent at UFC 200], a clean fighter, going out and fighting somebody whos maybe not clean -- its a concern. Especially when youre talking about a massive man like Brock Lesnar. Theres a danger there for Mark Hunt. And its unfortunate for the WWE, who supposedly has testing regulations in place. Youve got to wonder what exactly theyre testing for over there, what kind of tests are in place for them, because Brock tested positive immediately in the UFC.I see this as a big blow to the sport, but its good in that it gets the fighters to see the USADA is doing its job. The testing [is] working, and its going to scare a lot of athletes away from cheating.Okamoto: Long term, Im not sure it does all that much. People are in an uproar about it at the moment because you have two of the biggest stars in the sport facing sanctions for the same substance. Both were involved with UFC 200, a landmark event. Its not good for the sports image -- again, at the moment.Going back to the long term, I guess Ive just come to the conclusion that fans (consumers) dont care about PED use. At least, they dont care when it comes to speaking with what really matters, their wallets. Lesnar testing positive for a banned substance wont stop fans from purchasing UFC 202 if they already planned on doing so.As far as the WWE, you have to ask someone else. I know very little about the WWE and I dont mind keeping it that way. For the UFC, however, Lesnars tests wont have a massive effect on its bottom line.2.?What do you make of Hunts demand for Lesnars $2.5 million UFC 200 purse?Florian:?Well, I mean, a contract is a contract. Despite that, yes, wed love to live in that world where we can go back and say, Yeah, because of this, Hunt deserves more. But he agreed to the fight, unfortunately, and I dont think that should happen at this point. There are no rules set in place where a fighter gets an opponents purse.I do think, though, there should be something where if a fighter gets penalized for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, it should be like missing weight. A certain percentage of Lesnars purse should go to Hunt. I think Lesnar should have to pay Hunt, not the UFC. After all, its Brock Lesnars fault. I would like to see some kind of rule change: If a fighter tests positive, fights and gets paid -- some of that should go to his opponent.Okamoto:?Im in favor of Kennys proposal. If a fighter misses weight, he owes money to his opponent. I dont see any logical reason why this couldnt apply to PED use. That being said, it takes a rule change to implement this, and rule changes take time. So, I wouldnt expect to see this change adopted any time soon.Hunt did sign up for this fight. He was well aware of the fact the UFC waived a mandatory four-month testing window for Lesnar. Hunt was willing to accept those circumstances. Does he deserve more money after Lesnars tests came back positive? I think all fighters deserve more money, quite frankly. Do I see him touching that $2.5 million purse? Probably not.3.?The banned substance Jon Jones tested positive for on June 16 has been confirmed as an estrogen blocker. What is your reaction to this revelation?Florian: It doesnt come at a good time for him. It seemed like he was turning his life around and then we hear this. And the fact these are estrogen blockers, something people use when they are coming off a performance-enhancing cycle -- its tough.Now, can legal supplements be tainted? Absolutely. Hopefully that was the case, but its hard because I feel like thats the kind of the excuse youre taught to use. Its an excuse weve been hearing a lot and its easy to go out and say that. How many times do we hear that excuse and go, Oh well, all supplements are tainted. With the USADA overseeing this sports testing, you have to know whats being put in your body. Fighters are losing out on huge paydays, millions of dollars. In the end, they have to make sure theyre on top of it.Okamoto:?Its not good. It was never going to be good. Anything thats banned year-round, its for a reason. This is a substance, as Kenny just mentioned, that is taken after a PED cycle.Im not sure why Jones didnt just come out and confirm this substance to begin with. Waiting for it to come out during a Nevada commission meeting means its in headlines again. I think Jones missed an opportunity to break this news himself. Either way, the tainted supplement defense, if thats what Jones uses, has basically become the standard defense. The difference with Jones is that he comes with so much history and baggage attached. The public is quick to assume hes guilty and Jones has himself to blame for that.Even in the event this was a tainted supplement, how does Jones, after all he has been through, allow that to happen? Its just bad for Jones, any way you look at it.4.?Former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm fights Valentina Shevchenko this weekend in Chicago. Will Holm ever hold the 135-pound title again?Florian:?Im not so sure. I think this is going to be a good indicator of how far Holly has come, as she has a big disadvantage in her grappling skills. I think Miesha Tate really exposed her on the ground, and learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu takes time. I think striking can be learned a little quicker than grappling because of the nature of the skill involved. It really is going to be tough for her to make up that time in the next couple years.Holm has a tough fight against Shevchenko, and I could see Shevchenko winning. I think Amanda Nunes is also too much for her right now. Miesha was a tough matchup. If Ronda Rousey comes back, Holly matches up very well against her, but its going to be tough to win the belt back. She definitely has work to do.Okamoto:?Ill say that she will. I see Kennys points and I agree with them. I think if Holm does recapture the belt, it needs to happen relatively soon. Because her ground game is still such a work in progress, I think shed have a hard time putting together one title run after another. Shes 34, which isnt necessarily old but its not young, either. If shes going to win back the title, I think it needs to happen within the next 24 months.I like her chances, though. I think she matches up well with Shevchenko this weekend, and even though a potential fight against Nunes would be tough, you do still have Rousey in the mix. The UFC is going to want that rematch at some point. Whether Rousey would ever want it again is hard to say. Its a tough thing to predict but Ill say yeah, Holm wins the belt again before her career is over.5.?Is Bellator MMA welterweight knockout artist Michael Page legit?Florian:?Hes a savage -- awesome striking and hes showing he also has submission skills. Were looking at a new style of striking, which has devastating effects. His movement, his length -- were seeing a lot of karate-style fighters have a lot of success. You just dont see a lot of training partners move in that manner. [UFC welterweight] Stephen Thompson and Page, they are very unique and extremely dangerous.I think MVP has the reach of Jon Jones or something crazy like that. Ive been wanting to see him in the UFC for a while. I dont think hes experienced the same kind of wrestling in Bellator that is in the UFC, so it wouldnt be the smoothest transition for him. But I think he could crack the top 10 right now and give any of those guys a run for their money, for sure.Okamoto:?I dont know because Bellator wont give him a legitimate fight! Thats not entirely Bellators fault. Twice, Page has been booked to a fight against cagey veteran Fernando Gonzalez, and twice the fight has fallen through. This may never have been more apparent than during the 2016 presidential election.For as long as I can remember, sports have always been a sanctuary to me -- a rare place in our complicated society where people from all walks of life can come together to cheer on one team. Sure, that may sound hokey, but its also beautiful and perhaps even necessary. Ive made friends and talked to people I never otherwise would have solely because of a shared athletic allegiance.Thanks to the genius of Bill Belichick and the talent of Tom Brady, the New England Patriots -- and their impressive four Super Bowl titles since 2002 -- have helped provide one such space. From sitting in the freezing cold at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, watching a hard-fought victory, to commiserating after a Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants at a dive bar in Boston, the Patriots have created a community for fans where the team is first and politics and other differences fall by the wayside.But now Im conflicted, and I feel as if my sports utopia has been tarnished. Like many Americans, I voted for Hillary Clinton to be our next president, and like most of those voters, Im disappointed and angered with the outcome of Tuesdays election. I dont need to explain why I supported Clinton over Donald Trump. You either agree with me or you dont, but I feel passionately about my decision.Im not alone in New England. Whether you love it or hate it, this part of the country has been a liberal stronghold for decades.On Monday, during one of his final campaign rallies, Trump excitedly announced to a crowd in Manchester, New Hampshire, that Brady and Belichick had offered their support to him. Trump went on to say that both men had given their permission for him to reveal this news to the public.Donald, I support you, youre my friend and I voted for you, Trump said Brady told him over the phone earlier in the day. He then went on to read a letter written by Belichick in which the coach lauded him for his competitive spirit.Youve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter, Trump said, reading the letter. Hopefully tomorrows election results will give the opportunity to make America great again.While Brady has since hedged his support and now claims his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, haas asked him to no longer speak about politics, Belichick admitted he wrote the letter but said it was not politically motivated?and instead cited his longtime friendship with Trump as the basis for his endorsement. After briefly addressing Trump during their Wednesday morning news conferences, both Brady and Belichick used their remaining time to try to steer the conversation back to football. Belichick began answering more campaign questions with Seattle, in reference to the teams opponent on Sunday.While Im usually entertained by the Patriot Way and Belichicks terse answers to reporters, Im just not satisfied with this. Trump explicitly stated that both men gave him the OK to share their endorsements with the crowd in New Hampshire. While neither Brady nor Belichick outwardly denied that statement, they certainly didnt publicly endorse him either. But they cant have it both ways. They should be held accountable for their statements and, at the very least, should have to address questions about the topic.As an American first (and a Patriots fan somewhere else down the line), Im horrified with the results of this election. And Im pretty confident I wont be feeling much better by this weekend either. Im genuinely not sure if I can actively cheer for these two men, who clearly hold such different values than I do.I will be the first to admit that my stance is somewhat hypocritical. Im always thrilled when athletes use their voices to champion causes they -- and perhaps more importantly in this case, I?-- believe in. I was proud of LeBron James for supporting Clinton in the swing state of Ohio, and Ive been happy to see Colin Kaepernick, Megan Rapinoe and others attempt to raise awareness about the treatment of black people and police brutality.But my thinking is so far removed from Belichick and Brady -- who will be representing a New England they clearly dont epitomize politically when the Patriots play the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football -- that this for me is different. Justified or not.I know, I know. This is America and Brady and Belichick have every right to support -- publicly or privately -- whomever they want. But, just as they have that right, I have the same choice in whether or not I want to support them in a football game. And this Sunday night, I really dont think I can.
