SINGAPORE, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Singapore shares closed 0.14 percent higher on Wednesday, although index hovered most of the day in the negative territory amid lingering concerns over global growth.
Investors had to grapple with news that the German government cut its growth forecasts, euro-zone industrial production fell, British inflation slowed sharply in September and rating agency Fitch warned it may cut France's credit rating.
Separately, investors were still concerned about China's economy. China's consumer price index rose 1.6 percent in September from a year earlier, slower than a 2.0 percent on-year increase in August and slightly lower than the average market forecast of 1.7 percent. China's producer-price index, a gauge of factory-gate prices, dropped 1.8 percent in September from a year earlier, steeper than a 1.2 percent on-year decline in August, reflecting weak domestic demand.
The benchmark Straits Times Index rose 4.32 points to close at 3,198.72 points. Trading volume was 1.43 billion shares worth 939 million Singapore dollars. Decliners outnumbered advancers 299 to 138, while 498 stocks closed unchanged.
Amid top actives, Vard Holdings plunged 15.2 percent to 69.5 Singapore cents. It issued profit warning for its upcoming third- quarter results, saying it now expects a marginal pretax loss. Slower-than-expected improvements in throughput and productivity at the new Vard Promar shipyard in Brazil are impacting profitability during the ramp-up phase.
Additional cost was also incurred for the two vessels in the Promar order book that were built at a third-party yard and are currently undergoing outfitting at Vard Niteri. The group has also revised its estimates for a limited number of projects in its European order book where cost overruns were incurred.
Singapore Post Limited rose 0.8 percent to 1.83 Singapore dollars. It announced that it will be building an e-Commerce Logistics Hub in eastern part of Singapore at the estimated development cost of 182 million Singapore dollars. The Hub will have a three-story integrated center with fully automated parcel sorting facility, two warehousing floors, 150 simultaneous loading bays and eight-story office block. The construction is expected to be completed by early 2016.
Among the top gainers, Jardine Cycle and Carriage rose 0.8 percent to 40.25 Singapore dollars, whereas Jardine Matheson became one of the top losers by falling 0.8 percent to 57.94 U.S. dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals to 1.28 Singapore dollars)
Tina Fey (L) and Jason Bateman arrive at the premiere of This Is Where I Leave You at the TCL Chinese Theatre on September 15 in Hollywood, California.
Tina Fey and Jason Bateman called mutual friends when they learned they would co-star as siblings in the drama-infused comedy This Is Where I Leave You, just to do a little reconnaissance on each other.
"We had never worked together," Fey said. "Well, we owned a restaurant together for 10 years. We owned an Arby's."
"But that's not really work," shot back Bateman. "That is pure pleasure."
And with that sibling-like familiarity, Fey and Bateman, two of the most popular comic actors of their generation, banter on for minutes - their way of promoting the Warner Bros. film that opened in US theaters on Friday.
They play Wendy and Judd, the close middle siblings of the Altman family, brought together by the death of their father and asked by their mother to follow the Jewish ritual of "sitting shiva" for the seven days of mourning.
Judd has found his wife cheating on him with his womanizing boss and has only shared the news with Wendy, herself troubled by a lifeless marriage to a workaholic husband.
Jane Fonda plays the mother, Hilary, a vivacious, breast-enhanced, best-selling author who overshares her children's lives with readers. Fonda jumped at the chance to play a woman who is "sassy and still has some libido going for her."
Rounding out the clan are the eldest, Paul (Corey Stoll), who has stayed to run the family business and is struggling to conceive a child with his wife, and, the youngest, wild child Phillip (Adam Driver).
Phillip may bring home a much older girlfriend but acts like an adolescent, such as when he repeatedly touches the private parts of the young rabbi and childhood friend Boner (Ben Schwartz).
As the Altmans sit in a row greeting mourners, all the siblings' angst over their messy adult lives comes pouring out.
"Rare is the family that doesn't have crazy dynamics," said Shawn Levy, who directed the film based on the best-selling book by Jonathan Tropper.
"Most of us can relate to siblings who drive us nuts but who also love us fiercely and parents who fail to live up to our childhood idealizations of them."
Levy, who has directed Night at the Museum movies, said he always allows for improvisation and that Fey and Bateman are "as good as it gets" at coming up with ideas.
"They don't do silliness funny, they do grounded funny, and so that told me they would mesh well," Levy said.
Fey not only improvised her own lines, he said, but offered up lines to other
