Harvey Zipkin's photographs are immediate and evocative. Focusing on everyday life and subjects, he shoots images of the way we live now.
His work is part of an exhibit titled "Monochrome" at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, 601 Lake Ave., in downtown Lake Worth. His photos are displayed alongside works by other local artists including Delray Beach's Vincent Cacace, Joel Cohen and Korean American artist Misoo Filan.
"I'm really happy to be chosen for the show, because most of my shows are out of town or in Miami. It's great to have some exposure in my own backyard," Zipkin said.
The exhibit encompasses a collection of 53 paintings, photographs, sculpture and a site specific installation.
Zipkin's works include eight photographs, including a train station in Oslo and an ice cream shop in Holland.
"We are so pleased to have artists like Harvey Zipkin included in this exhibition," said Rena Blades, president and CEO of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. A member of the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, Brooklyn born Zipkin, 72, is influenced by the New York School and his early mentors including Philip Perkis, former chairman of the photography department at Pratt Institute and Burton Berinsky, the official photographer of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union known for his photos of Robert F. Kennedy.
"I don't shoot individual photographs," Zipkin said. "I create a series of documentary photographs of the way we live in our generation. I try to emulate photographers from the '30s and '40s like Henri Cartier Bresson."
His current project is documenting the changing area of Miami's Wynwood and the copy cartier trinity ring Cuban, Puerto Rican and Haitian communities in the midst of the area's gentrification into an arts district culminates in a series titled, "Wynwood in Color and Black and White."
Other series include: "My Friends and Others," "Coney Island," "Sosua," documenting the lives of the Jews of the Dominican Republic, and another copy ring cartier documenting the neighborhood in New York called Chinatown.
A typical project takes Zipkin between two to four years to complete.
