Andy Burnham's boast about his wife's business is pretty cool

It was a sticky question and Andy Burnham looked a bit worried: what experience did he have of the private sector?

As someone who began working for his party at the age of 24, the frontrunner for the Labour leadership knew his world experience amounted to little more than a brief spell as a journalist on a transport magazine.

Luckily help was at hand in the shape of his other half, Marie France van Heel, (better known by her nickname Frankie). wife has run her own business in the past so I have experience of working in the private sector, he declared like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

While Burnham claim may have been a little overstated Dutch born Frankie business career appears to have been pretty short lived: her marketing company was wound up after three years it the nonetheless represented something of a landmark moment.

Wasn it refreshing to hear a senior politician boasting about his wife achievements rather than burying them, or worse denying their existence? Burnham, alongside the many other career politicians in Westminster, are increasingly having to rely upon their spouses' experiences of the 'real world'. Lots of these spouses are still wives but at least their roles are being upgraded from that of arm candy.

And yet, we just come out of election in which the party leaders wives were paraded like show ponies. Lawyers Justine Miliband and Miriam Gonzlez Durntez, Nick Clegg Spanish wife, found themselves grilled about their husband favourite food rather than their high powered legal careers, while Samantha Cameron outfits gained far more attention than her work as a successful businesswoman for the luxury goods firm Smythson.

Two months on, and it feels as if we are in a different era. First Yvette Cooper declared the death of the political spouse, and then her leadership rival Mr Burnham started boasting of his wife business credentials.

Ever since Gordon Brown brought his (successful PR expert) wife Sarah on to the stage in a bid to soften his austere image, the depressing sight of the political spouse trotting up to greet her man with a kiss at the end of his keynote speech has been a fixture of all the party conferences.

But when Cooper, 46, last week was asked at a political lunch if her husband Ed Balls, who had been shadow chancellor before being booted out of office last month, would be joining her on the podium, she scoffed at the idea.

should be long beyond the era of expecting any politician to have the political wives standing next to them, she said. think that role in terms of the party conference is an outdated one.

Cooper was also asked what she thought about being compared to , the Democratic presidential challenger.

But her work on health reform was fatally undermined by sniping from Republicans and a wider public which found the sight of an unelected, female politician trying to achieve major social change too much to stomach. Her successors, the demure Laura Bush who tried to promote reading for children and Michelle Obama, replica van cleef and arpels bracelet, child obesity campaigner, have proved more palatable female role models to an unreconstructed American public.

More than 20 years on from Hillary health care debacle, and the role of the political wife finally appears to be on the brink of becoming a far more interesting one.

Frankie Burnham is certainly an interesting character.

Marie France van Heel, Andy Burnham's wife, meets the Queen

Born in Holland, she met Burnham at Cambridge and they married in 2000. She has forged a highly successful career as a brand consultant while raising three children, the first born just after he became an MP; not easy given that she lives full time in his constituency of Leigh while he returns to Westminster during the week.

Both now 45, the couple seem particularly close. In 2010, Frankie took the brave decision to have a double mastectomy, having been diagnosed with the breast cancer gene and watched family members, including her sister, a mother of three, die well before their time.

Burnham was so rattled, van cleef arpels imitation alhambra bracelet, both by the death of his sister in law, whom he had been close to, and the enormity and courage of her decision, that he fluffed the 2010 Labour leadership campaign, barely bothering to campaign as he spent as much time as possible with Frankie and the children.

During last month election campaign her Twitter feed was a joy cheeky messages to her husband ( I have a question, when is AB home for dinner? she replied to a Radio 5Live shout out for questions ahead of a Burnham interview) were interspersed with gentle mocking of her husband opponents: Boris Johnson was labelled an

If the shadow health secretary fails again to win the leadership, then Labour is likely to have a woman at its helm for the first time in its history.

Ed Balls will make a fascinating political spouse keen to give Cooper her chance to shine he has taken up an academic post at Harvard and has forsworn all media for the duration of the leadership contest. If his wife is elected, we look forward to hearing his thoughts on what she likes for tea. Perhaps he will consult with Bill Clinton.

Liz Kendall, the other serious contender for the crown, is single. A sympathetic, and married, van cleef imitation clover bracelet, female Conservative MP told me with genuine concern that she feared for Kendall and any politician who went through a bruising leadership contest, let alone the travails of office, without a partner to turn to when things got rough.

The 44 year old recently split from her longterm boyfriend, the comedian Greg Davies. Shame Westminster needs some laughs.

Meanwhile Jeremy Corbyn, van cleef replica gold bracelet, the left wing outsider, has admitted he divorced his Colombian wife Claudia Bracchitta partly because she insisted on sending their son to a grammar school against his wishes, something the comprehensive school champion couldn abide. Now there a political wife with a mind of her own.
