Oakland jurors hear how bad parallel parking job led to killing
OAKLAND An Alameda County prosecutor on Thursday asked jurors to convict two men accused of killing a Merchant Marine Academy graduate because he bumped their car while parallel parking outside a North Oakland store.
Prosecutor Butch Ford argued that Cartier Hunter, 27, and Giovonte Douglas,imitation rolex daytona men, 24, are guilty of first degree murder in the Dec. 22, 2011, shooting of 23 year old Charles Butler Jr. at 46th and West streets. Defense attorneys argued that the prosecution has failed to meet its burden of proof in a case reliant on witness statements and surveillance video.
They are asking for acquittals for the defendants, who police said were reputed gang members though neither defendant is facing any gang related charges.
Butler was fatally shot in the head while driving a block from his home after leaving the North Side Supermarket.
Police said Butler bumped the defendants Lexus while trying to parallel park outside the store, though the incident was believed to cause no damage to the car. Ford said that Butler can be seen on video interacting with the defendants before they followed him to commit murder.
The case was unsolved, according to Ford, until a woman who witnessed the shooting was compelled by media coverage of Butler distraught father to contact police.
The woman testified that Hunter jumped out of a car that Douglas was driving,imitation rolex daytona gold, ran up to Butler car and fired numerous shots.
